Watch Fisherman Climb On Entangled Whale’s Back So He Can Set It Free

When this commercial fisherman saw a humpback whale in distress, he did not hesitate to leap into action – literally.

Sam Synstelien and his crewmates were on their way back to shore in Morro Bay, California last month when they saw the massive mammal swimming in circles.

The whale was entangled in a rope that was tethered to a buoy. The fishermen radioed for help, but the coast guard said that they would not be able to assist the whale for several hours.

After their boat spent an hour monitoring the whale, Synstelien then took matters into his own hands by jumping onto the whale’s back and cutting the ropes free.

Before the fisherman was in the water, the whale had been desperately trying to dive into the water to escape the rope – but according to the fishermen, the mammal stayed in place during Synstelien’s rescue efforts.

Synstelien finally managed to cut the whale free, and as it swam back out to sea, the fishermen can be heard cheering wildly.

Though the dramatic whale of a tale had a happy ending, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warns viewers not to undertake such risky maneuvers in the future.

“While we are relieved the fishermen were not harmed and the whale may have been freed, we fear this video is a very dangerous example, and may encourage others to attempt such a response in the future,” said the agency, according to the San Francisco Gate. “Even authorized, trained responders have been killed while attempting to disentangle whales using the best techniques and specialized equipment.

“Best practice for dealing with an entangled whale is to never get into the water with it, as these animals are very powerful and dangerous in close proximity. In addition, every entangled whale is not necessarily in imminent danger, meaning that there is time to wait for the authorized responders and not requiring these types of emergency actions. And cutting just the visible lines may not totally free the animal, making it harder for responders to help.”

This California City is Cleaning Up Their Streets By Paying the Homeless to Pick Up Litter

San José is launching an ingenious initiative that will simultaneously beautify their city and provide jobs for homeless people in one fell swoop.

The California city is hiring 25 local homeless people to pick up litter around the city for $15 an hour.

By hiring homeless people to clean up the streets, the city hopes to provide them with a paycheck and eventually transition them into full-time work.

The workers will primarily involve cleaning up 40 different areas around town that have been identified as litter hotspots and dumping grounds. Legislators hope that – if the homeless employees find a sense of purpose with the work – they will also be able to dissuade their homeless acquaintances from contributing any more litter to the hotspots.

Homeless applicants will be hired and managed by Downtown Streets Team, an organization that works to end homelessness, and Goodwill. According to Mercury News, the program is currently being financed through a $200,000 litter abatement grant from the city, and if the initiative proves to be successful, then city workers are eager to see it continue into the future.

Though there is no way to predict how successful the program will be in San José, the city of Denver made national headlines back in January for publishing the results of a similar work model in which they hired homeless people to perform jobs for the city. After one year of paying the workers, over 100 of them were able to land regular jobs.

Chance Photograph of Breathtaking Marriage Proposal Finally Presented to Mystery Couple

The identity of the couple behind this magical wedding proposal has been driving social media users crazy for almost one month – but after weeks of searching, the internet has finally found the lovebirds who were perched on the mountain peak.

Michigan-based photographer Matthew Dippel had been hiking through Yosemite National Park in California on October 6th when he spotted a man proposing to a woman on top of Taft Point.

After capturing a breathtaking photo of the proposal, Dippel posted it to social media and asked his followers to help him find the couple.

As the weeks went by, Dippel started to lose hope over ever identifying the duo. Dozens of people reached out to the photographer, saying that they knew the couple – but none of the claims seemed to hold up. He assumed that the soon-to-be husband and wife had seen the photo on news outlets and chose to remain anonymous.

Finally, someone put Dippel in touch with Matthew Bear and Melissa: a couple who had time-stamped photos of their engagement on Taft Point in which they were shown wearing the same articles of clothing at the exact same time as the viral picture.

“When I officially knew that it was them, a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders,” Dippel told PEOPLE. “I started jumping up and down in my basement because I had finally found them! I was so happy to get connected with them, and just to hear the gratitude in their voice was so heartwarming.”

Dippel’s followers were able to join in on the celebrations after the photographer posted his discovery to social media platforms earlier this week.

“I wish I was able to meet you in person and hug you,” Dippel wrote about the couple. “I’m glad I finally found you to share this special moment with you, thanks for being so awesome, maybe one day we will finally meet in person!”

The couple reciprocated the sentiment, with Melissa later adding on social media: “We can’t thank Matt enough for all of his efforts in trying to find us! I’m still trying to comprehend all of this and half of me still doesn’t believe this actually has gone viral online! We love you all!! Now off to wedding planning!”

When Duchess Meghan Accepts Macaroni Necklace Gift From Young Fan, He is Flooded With Orders

Duchess Meghan can look fantastic in anything that she wears – and since she enthusiastically wore a macaroni necklace that was made for her by a 6-year-old fan, the boy has become inundated with orders.

Gavin Hazelwood insisted on staying home from school earlier this month so he could see Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan on their Australian tour.

As a means of welcoming the royal couple to his hometown of Melbourne, Gavin covered some dinosaur-shaped macaroni in gold paint and strung them onto a ribbon. He then made a sign reading “I Made You A Necklace” so he could capture Markle’s attention – and it worked.

Markle accepted the boy’s gift and proudly wore it around her neck for the duration of their outdoor reception.

After Markle was seen wearing the necklace, Gavin created a website (with a little help from his parents) where he could continue making macaroni necklaces for $20 a pop.

If that seems expensive, it’s because he is donating all of his earnings to stillborn research; a cause that is very close to his heart after he had a stillborn sister in 2014.

Since creating the website, his mother says that he has received 250 orders from around the world.

“I want to be like the Prince and Princess and support charities,” writes Gavin. “I made more necklaces the same as Meghan’s. If I sell them, I’ll send all the profits to research for stillborn babies,” adding that he is “very excited that my necklace money can help save other babies.”

Soccer Star Helps to Launch ‘World’s Largest Inclusive School’ for Disabled Children to Be Students and Teachers

This soccer star isn’t just winning hearts for his actions on the field – he is also inspiring others by what he is doing for disabled children on the internet.

Brazilian football player Neymar Jr. recently made a social media post about his hand in promoting the “world’s biggest inclusive school.”

Neymar partnered with Handicap international to launch the initiative as a means of raising awareness for the lack of educational opportunities made available to disabled children. The online school, which has been called Teacher Kids, allows kids from all over the world to post videos of themselves teaching a unique skill – and it allows everyone else to learn from the enthusiastic young teachers as well.

“32 million disabled kids don’t have access to school,” writes Neymar, “yet they have so much to teach us.”

Neymar, who is a forward player for the Paris Saint-Germain football club, became the school’s first student when he sat down in front of a screen and participated in virtual lessons that were taught by children with special needs.

A boy with Down syndrome gave the athlete a lesson in relaxation; a blind girl showed Neymar how to make an origami heart; and a young amputee even taught a dance class.

Muslims Raise $250,000 for Pittsburgh Synagogue: ‘Whatever you need … let us know, we’ll be there’

Whenever there is tragedy, Fred Rogers says that it is always important to “look for the helpers” – and in this case, the helpers are two Muslim-American organizations that are rushing to support their Jewish neighbors.

Celebrate Mercy and MPower Change teamed up to create a crowdfunding page that has been raising money for the victims and families of the shooting that took place at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh last week.

“The Muslim-American community extends its hands to help the shooting victims, whether it is the injured victims or the Jewish families who have lost loved ones,” says the campaign page. “We wish to respond to evil with good, as our faith instructs us, and send a powerful message of compassion through action.”

Within six hours of publishing the Launch Good page, the campaign reached its goal of $25,000. Now, just days after its creation, the page has managed to raise a quarter-million dollars and counting.

According to the organizers, only 25% of the donors have identified as Muslim, while the rest of the contributors have reportedly come from other faiths.

Since the page was originally created to address the immediate needs of the victims’ families, the campaign organizers are in discussions about how the additional funds will be distributed.

“We are currently assessing whether any more funds are needed for the victims’ families, but we are keeping the campaign open,” reads one of the page updates. “Any leftover proceeds, after disbursing funds to victims’ families, will be spent on projects that help foster Muslim-Jewish collaboration, dialogue, and solidarity.”

Muslims aren’t the only ones lending a hand, either. According to the New York Times, there have been dozens of candlelit vigils to show solidarity with the synagogue. Blood banks have stayed open late to accommodate the crowd of donors.

An Iranian-American man from Washington DC named Shay Khatiri created a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the synagogue as well. In four days, it has raised over $1 million, and he says that the donor list has revealed very similar results to the Launch Good page.

“There are Steins and Bergs, and there are Mohammeds. There are generic American names, and there are Asian ones,” says Khatiri. “It is only fitting that Americans of all backgrounds — immigrant, native-born, Jewish, atheist, Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, Muslim, etc. — are uniting against this hateful act. America is beautiful!”

When 8-Year-old ‘Queen’ Finds Authentic Ancient Sword in a Lake, Her Fans Rally to Forge Her a Replica

An 8-year-old girl made international headlines for her astonishing discovery at the bottom of a Swedish lake – and now her fans are demanding that she be rewarded for her contribution to history.

Saga Vanecek had been playing in a lake by her family’s home in Tanno, Sweden over the summer when she felt something strange along the floor of the lake.

Her father had been hurrying her to finish playing in the water so he could watch a much-anticipated World Cup game – and it’s a good thing that she delighted in ignoring him, because she then managed to unearth the curious object from the lake bed and brandish it in the air, saying “Daddy, I’ve found a sword!”

Saga had, in fact, discovered a sword from the Iron Age that is estimated to be 1,500 years old.

When her father brought the sword to an archaeologist at a nearby museum, the researcher got “goosebumps” over the rusted relic.

The archaeologist then told Saga to keep it a secret so that the museum researchers could have time to search for more buried treasures. Sure enough, the team managed to find a brooch in the same vicinity as the sword.

“People on the Internet are saying I am the queen of Sweden, because in the legend of King Arthur, he was given a sword by a lady in a lake, and that meant he would become king,” Saga told the Guardian. “I am not a lady — I’m only 8 — but it’s true I found a sword in the lake. I wouldn’t mind being queen for a day, but when I grow up I want to be a vet. Or an actor in Paris.”

The sassy 8-year-old has acquired quite a fan club for herself since she published her story in the news outlet. Her classroom celebrated her story by having cake and balloons, much to the youngster’s delight. Additionally, a Scottish clothing company created a T-shirt design inspired by Saga’s sword.

Though she was sad to give up her treasure to the museum, she says that she is happy that other people will be able to look at it too. However, she and her father created a crowdfunding page to raise money for a replica of her sword – and it has already reached its goal.

Any additional donations made to the page will help Saga to write a children’s book about her discovery so that other kids might be inspired to take an interest in history and exploration.

“Now, whenever I go swimming in the lake, I will be looking to see what I can find,” says Saga. “It feels like that lake might be a little bit magic. On that day I felt a little bit magic, too.”

Ovarian Cancer ‘Breakthrough’ Drug Prevents Disease Returning for Years

This exciting new drug treatment could help to extend the lifespans of women suffering from one of the world’s worst cancer survival rates.

Ever after undergoing chemotherapy and surgery, 70% of ovarian cancer patients suffer relapses within three years of treatment – and only 35% are still alive ten years after their initial diagnosis. Once the cancer returns, it is considered terminal.

According to these “unprecedented” trial results, however, a new drug called olaparib has dramatically increased the lifespan and survival rates of ovarian cancer patients.

The drug was given to women who had successfully eliminated all or part of the cancer by undergoing chemotherapy. Three years after the women were started on the drug in 2013, researchers found that the drug was associated with a 70% reduction in mortality and cancer relapse, compared to only a third of patients in the placebo groups.

More importantly, since the follow-up took place only three years after the drug’s prescription, the treatment could offer protection for even longer amounts of time.

“The most exciting finding is that more than half the patients on the olaparib arm have not relapsed with a minimum of three years of follow-up,” said Professor Charlie Gourley, director of ovarian cancer research at the University of Edinburgh, according to the Telegraph.

“This is unprecedented and raises the possibility that a number of these patients may be cured, although longer follow-up of patients is required before we can definitively draw this conclusion.”

The study results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Human Chain of People Help Move A Bookstore, Book By Book

This small independent book store in England isn’t just surviving – it is thriving thanks to the city that adores its literary services.

October Books of Southampton had been struggling to afford the rising rent prices of the building that they had occupied since 1977. The owners created a crowdfunding page for $400,000 in hopes of buying out an old bank building down the block.

Hundreds of devoted customers and regular visitors offered donations and loans to help meet the crowdfunding goal.

Then on Sunday, the shop ran into another financial issue – how would they be able to move their stock to the new location without having to pay for expensive moving services?

October Books put out a call for volunteers to form a “human conveyor belt” between their old store and the new location 500 feet down the street.

They expected maybe a few dozen people to show up – but to their surprise, over 200 people – young and old – lined up on the sidewalk to pass each of the store’s 2,000 books to their new home.

Amy Brown, one of the store’s employees, told NPR that she was stunned to see the resulting turnout.

“I was handing books to people without actually seeing the entire of it,” said Brown. “So it was only after about 20 minutes I actually go out into the road and saw the extent of the people.”

When passing pedestrians asked what people were doing, they would jump in to help. Nearby restaurants even brought hot teas and coffees for the volunteers.

“It was really sort of surprising and positive, and just a really moving experience to see people chipping in because they wanted to help. And they wanted to be part of something bigger,” Brown told NPR.

We wanted to bring you this sweet reminder of a Halloween story to show that this costumed holiday in America is not all ‘tricks’—there are a lot of ‘treats’ of kindness, too.

Anyone who has ever been trick-or-treating before is familiar with the sensation of seeing a bowl sitting out on a household’s steps, promising candy – only to discover that it’s empty.

Hayden Chapple of Idaho Falls experienced this exact same scenario while trick-or-treating on Halloween last year, except he responded to it by doing something that was even more awesome than his costume.

The Robertson family had left the bowl of candy out on their stoop so they could take their daughter trick-or-treating. They also left a sign that read “Do a trick and take a treat! And smile – you’re on camera”.

The Robertsons say that they like leaving out the camera because it is fun to review the footage later and see the kids making goofy faces and doing little stunts. When they were playing the video later that night, however, they were disappointed to see one of the kids taking the rest of the candy and leaving the bowl empty.

But they weren’t disappointed for long – after a few minutes, Hayden walked up to the bowl with his mother Heather.

11-year-old Hayden, who was dressed as Eleven from the Netflix series Stranger Things, saw that the bowl was empty, did a little jump-twirl as a trick, and started to walk away. Then, he saw that there were some other children coming towards the house.

Not wanting them to find the empty bowl of candy, he doubled back and left some of his own “good candy” – a few different flavors of Skittles and a Snickers bar – for the next group of kids.

Hayden later recalled that he did not even think that there was a camera watching him. He thought that the Robertsons had made it up to deter kids from stealing the candy.

“He’s pretty excited but it’s kind of shocking because it’s not really anything out of the ordinary for him,” Heather told East Idaho News. “He was just hoping the homeowners would have seen his awesome trick.”

She is also happy that the Robertsons shared her son’s good deed to the world because she is proud of her son being such a good example for others.

“They could have just as easily posted the video of the kid stealing the candy,” she says. “It was very nice of them to put up the positive video.”

Solar Panels Recoup Cost Faster by Following Sun From Dawn Till Dusk, Thanks to Clever Teen Scientist

A 13-year-old scientist has just won a top science prize by creating a program that allows solar panels to generate more electricity by following the location of the sun from dawn until dusk.

Georgia Hutchinson’s experiment is built on a simple premise: if a solar panel is able to follow the sun at all times, then they can generate more electricity. The more electricity they generate, the faster they can pay off their purchase costs and utility bills.

Most solar panels are only set up to point in one direction – and while there are solar panels that are equipped with trackers that allow them to follow the sun by moving along two axises, they are incredibly expensive.

So as a means of maximizing a panel’s exposure of the sun, Georgia borrowed an equation that was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The equation uses a person’s location to state exactly where the sun will be in the sky at any given time. She then used the equation to program a solar tracker so that the panel could point directly towards the sun at all times. After that, she ran some experiments to compare exactly how much electricity her data-driven solar panel could generate in comparison to a fixed-point panel – and her results were impressive.

“In the Bay Area, data-driven dual-axis solar trackers could reduce the payback period of solar by up to 40 percent,” says Georgia.

Georgia first became inspired to develop her cost-effective program when her family traveled to Corvallis, Oregon from Woodside, California so they could see the solar eclipse in 2017.

“On the way home, my uncle called to say that he had just invested in solar [panels], and that in 20 years, he would have free electricity,” says Georgia. “I thought 20 years was way too long.”

“I realized if man knew where and when the eclipse will be, we must know where the sun will be at other times,” she says. “This inspired a data-driven dual-axis solar tracker.”

In recognition for her program, the seventh grader just won the $25,000 top prize in the National Broadcom MASTERS Competition, one of the most prestigious science and engineering competitions for middle schoolers in America. Over 2,500 young teenage scientists are considered for their experiments in STEM-related fields.

The Top 300 and 30 finalists are representative of special young people who are preparing themselves to solve the grand challenges we face through the world,” she added. “The Broadcom Foundation is honored to champion young scientists, engineers and innovators and spur them on to greatness.”

Thanks to ‘Super Mom’ Saving Her Husband’s Life, He Opens His Eyes in Time to See His Son’s Birth

Ashley and Andrew have been excitedly awaiting the arrival of their first child – but in the 24 hours leading up to his birth, the happiest day of their life was almost turned tragic.

The couple had been sleeping at their home in St Paul, Minnesota when Ashley was sudden awoken to the sounds of her husband gasping for air, rather than snoring.

Upon calling 911, the paramedics told her that her husband was in full cardiac arrest and she needed to give him CPR.

Even though she had never given CPR before and she was 9-months-pregnant, she overcame her fears and started giving chest compressions to her husband.

The paramedics eventually arrived and brought Andrew to United Hospital. Doctors said that because of the amount of time that he had been deprived of oxygen, then he may have brain damage – that is, assuming he ever woke up.

Contrary to the odds, however, Andrew opened his eyes the next day. Not only that, he woke up just in time to witness the birth of his son Lennon.

Doctors credit his amazing survival to his wife’s speedy and courageous response – but Ashley is simply happy to have her entire family returning home safely and soundly.

Ingelia is a Spanish business that has created a biocarbon product called “biochar” out of sewage waste. In addition to the little pellets giving off zero CO2 emissions, they also give off surprisingly low rates of harmful substances such as sulphur, nitrogen, and chlorine.

“Under specific pressure and temperature conditions, 20 bars and 200ºC, we dehydrate the organic matter and siphon off the humid matter in liquid form,” said Ingelia CEO Marisa Hernández, according to Business Insider. “In other words, we concentrate 95% of the carbon in the waste.”

Not only does the biochar offer a perfect sustainable replacement for burning coal, it also offers a more sustainable solution for sewage treatment. The standard composting process that is currently utilized by most waste treatment facilities requires 30 long days of energy and maintenance.

Ingelia, on the other hand, uses a process called “hydrothermal carbonization” to burn off all of the harmful substances in the sewage until it becomes a hard, dry pellet of fuel. The process only takes about 6 to 8 hours to complete, and because it is kept within a sealed tank, there are little to no bad smells as a result of the procedure.

Furthermore, Ingelia can recycle other forms of biowaste into biochar as well.

“We use the organic collection of trash, the organic portion of municipal waste, sewage from treatment plants, and even waste from gardening,” says Hernández.

The CEO says that she and her business partners are already negotiating with the majority of Spanish waste facilities about implementing their process during the near future. Several sewage plants in Italy, Spain, and the UK have already started using the process to treat thousands of tons of waste.

With the way that the company is progressing, Hernández says that we could be diverting half a million tons of carbon from the atmosphere by 2022.

Devoted Lunch Lady Encourages Students by Writing Sweet Messages on Fruit

As a means of encouraging her students, this lunch lady has started turning lunchtime fruit into makeshift fortune cookies.

Stacey Truman, the cafeteria manager at Kingston Elementary School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, wanted to offer some inspiration to her students – so she started writing down little messages of encouragement on the bananas that she served for lunch.

Truman says that since she always writes messages of love on the bananas that she gives to her own kids, she wanted to provide the same daily dose of motivation to the youngsters at Kingston.

The students have affectionately called the healthy treats “talking bananas” – and Truman says that they are almost always gone by the time lunch is over.

Kids aren’t the only ones enjoying the messages, either – school principal Sharon Shrewbridge was so touched by the gesture, she took a photo of the talking bananas and posted it to social media where it has attracted the attention of dozens of news outlets.

“[Truman’s] almost embarrassed about all the attention,” Shewbridge told Yahoo Lifestyle. “She just wanted it to be anonymous. But I said this is so simple and amazing — and it has such an impact on kids.”

“It’s simple, but these words can help them be more courageous and realize that they are good enough,” she added. “I hope that other schools see it’s an easy way to get a kind message to kids.”

87-Year-old Walking to Buy Mega Millions Ticket Breaks His Hip, Then Wins Hospital Lottery Pool

In an incredible twist of fate, this 87-year-old’s misfortune has resulted in a huge financial windfall.

Earl Livingston was walking to a store in Blackwood, New Jersey last week to buy a Mega Millions lottery ticket when he fell and broke his hip.

After he was taken to Jefferson Stratford Hospital, he told his story to the nurses and expressed his disappointment about how he had not gotten to buy a ticket.

One of the nurses then asked if he would like to join their employee lottery pool which included 141 other workers.

Livingston obliged – and it’s a good thing that he did, because the pool ended up winning a $1 million jackpot.

The staff have since told news outlets that they believe Livingston was their good luck charm – and upon telling him the good news, they said that seeing the smile on his face was payment enough.

“I didn’t believe him when I got here,” one of Livingston’s nieces told NBC10. “I thought he was confused, maybe from pain meds. And then the staff came into the room and they were saying congratulations. And I was like, ‘Wow, he really did win.’”
