Thanks to Snapchat, Woman Gets Lifesaving Stroke Medicine With 12 Minutes to Spare

While the Snapchat is mostly known for allowing millennials to share videos and photo filters with their friends, it recently saved the life of a woman who was minutes away from death.

Back in July 2017, Darnisha Ladd was in the middle of a normal day at work when she started to feel dizzy.

As the day went on, the 38-year-old administrative worker from Omaha, Nebraska started suffering from a pounding headache and experienced trouble focusing on her computer screen. When she tried to stand up to talk to her boss, she fell back in her chair.

Ladd was taken to the hospital where doctors performed a CT scan to make sure that she was not suffering from a stroke. The scan showed nothing out of the ordinary, so once her symptoms were under control, doctors sent her home to rest and told her that if she experienced any more symptoms, then she should return to the hospital immediately.

RELATEDWoman Dials Wrong Number, is Stunned When Jimmy John’s Delivery Driver Says He’ll Pick Up Her Sick Brother

Since Ladd was anxious about being left alone, her sister Sherita White stayed at home to keep an eye on her. White, who works as a nurse, is always using Snapchat to keep her social media followers entertained – so as the sisters binge-watched television, White took a video of themselves removing Ladd’s IV port.

As the night progressed, however, disaster struck.

“All of a sudden she woke up and something didn’t seem right,” White told the World-Herald. “Her eyes were (rolled) back, and she wouldn’t talk. … I could tell she wasn’t breathing right.”

Ladd was rushed back to the hospital, and as doctors poured over test results and scans, they eventually confirmed that their patient was having a stroke.

The doctors then had a serious decision to make. The medication that could save Ladd had to be administered within 4 and a half hours of when the symptoms started. If they delivered the medication outside of the time frame, then it could be fatal for Ladd. Since they had no way of telling when the symptoms started, they had to assume that they began right when she left the hospital – in which case, it was already too late.

White then remembered the Snapchat video that she had taken of her sister earlier in the evening. The clip showed that Ladd was acting normally with no display of symptoms – and the time stamp confirmed that they were still within the 4 and a half hour time window.

The medication was then delivered to Ladd with 12 minutes to spare, dissolving the blood clot in her brain and effectively saving her life.

Though she had to undergo rigorous physical therapy to recover basic motor functions, she says that she has maintained the courage to persist thanks to the loving support of her sisters.

“On any given day, I would look up when I was in my therapy and one of my sisters or my cousins would be there cheering me on,” Ladd tearfully told the Herald. “I feel very motivated to get myself back to 100 percent.”

Tower of London Ignites 10,000 Torches in ‘Epic’ Display of Light to Commemorate End of WWI

It has been 100 years since World War I came to an end – and the Tower of London is putting on an “epic” art display to commemorate the anniversary.

Every night during the coming week, the historic site is igniting 10,000 torches around the tower’s moat to celebrate the armistice that brought the war to an end in 1918.

The installation, which is called Beyond the Deepening Shadow: The Tower Remembers, will be running until Armistice Day on November 11th.

According to the Historic Royal Palaces website, the installation begins at 5PM with a procession led by the Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London. Emerging from the fortress, the Warders – themselves all distinguished former servicemen and women – will ceremonially light the first flame. In a moving ritual, a select team of volunteers will then proceed to light the rest of the installation, gradually creating a circle of light, radiating from the Tower as a powerful symbol of remembrance. The display will conclude at 9pm every evening.

RELATEDChelsea Soccer Club to Fight Antisemitism by Offering Education at Auschwitz for Racist Fans, Rather Than Bans

The display is reminiscent to how the Tower commemorated the start of WWI four years ago by planting poppies across the grounds.

Beyond the Deepening Shadow is a fitting way to draw our centenary commemorations of the First World War to a close: transforming the moat into a circle of flames around the Tower, a powerful symbol of light in darkness,” says John Barnes, Chief Executive of the Historic Royal Palaces.

“It will be a beautiful spectacle and we hope that, as in 2014, the public will come to the Tower to find a shared space for reflection on the sacrifices of the fallen.”

Watch Olympic Sprinter Run Onto Busy Highway So He Can Save Tortoise From Traffic

This tortoise may have been in big trouble if it had not been for the sharp eyes and athletic speed of an Olympic gold medalist.

David Verburg, the champion sprinter who won the 4×400-meter relay at the 2016 Rio Olympics, recently published a video of himself sprinting into a busy intersection to save the reptile.

Verburg had been driving down the Florida highway when he saw the tortoise. After swerving his car to avoid hitting the creature, he made a U-turn, parked in a turning lane and ran into the street so he could scoop it into his arms and run back to the vehicle.

“My shoes were untied and loose, so as I started running, I low-key thought ‘This was a terrible idea,’ but I already started running,” Verburg told Runners World.

He waited until he was in a more secluded area before getting out of his car and putting the tortoise down under some trees.

Verburg, who is a self-proclaimed animal lover, guesses that it was a gopher tortoise, which is protected under the Endangered Species Act.

“It happens all the time in Florida. I move a tortoise/turtle whenever I see one. I just so happened to catch this one on camera,” Verburg told the news outlet.

This Elementary School Classroom for Parents Has Dramatically Improved How Kids (and Adults) Thrive

In the early hours of the morning, in a classroom in Oakland, California, 20 mothers are learning to read, write, and interpret English.

At first glance, it may seem like an attempt to better acclimatize to a new culture – and while that may be a part of it, it’s also so much more.

Oakland Unified School District is just one of 100 school districts across the country that teaches English classes to immigrant parents and guardians – and what educators are noticing is that the programs have a dramatic impact on the relationship between the parents and their children.

Not only are the parents and grandparents becoming more involved in the school community itself, they are also more inclined to engage their children in homework and academically-related conversations. The kids then go on to get higher test scores; the parents land better jobs as a result of the program; and both of them are more likely to pursue higher levels of education.

RELATEDFrance Just Banned Smartphone Use in Schools

“In some of our studies, we’re showing that kids whose parents attend family literacy attend school 16 more days a year. That’s a whole year by the time they graduate high school,” Sharon Darling, the President of the National Center for Families Learning, told PRI.

Kathy Locke, a teacher for the adult education program, also told the news outlet: “It’s been really neat to see my students realize that the stuff that their kids are bringing home for homework that they don’t understand — they actually know how to do it.”

Wahbiai Alqaifi, a student in the program and mother of six, had struggled with English since moving to California from Yemen 15 years ago. With the help of her instructors, she can now participate in English-driven conversations with her children, saying: “When they talk to each other, I understand what they say. Before, [could not] understand what they say.”

How This Tiny Dog Went From Living in the Jungle to Becoming a Nationally Recognized WWII Hero

We’ve all heard of Winston Churchill – but have you heard of Smokey the dog?

Smokey was a Yorkshire terrier who was found by an American soldier in the jungles of New Guinea in 1944. He thought that maybe she belonged to the Japanese, but since she didn’t seem to respond to the language, they could not figure out how she got there.

Eager to get back to his poker game, the man who found her then sold her to another American soldier for six dollars.

Smokey then went on to become a nationally recognized WWII hero.

Photo of Man Holding Baby for a Stranger While She Does Paperwork is Melting Hearts Across the Internet

This older man is being praised across the internet for his heartwarming display of kindness towards a mother who had her hands full last week.

Natasha Crittenden Wilson snapped a photo of the senior adoringly cradling a sleeping boy while his mother filled out paperwork in the waiting room of a doctor’s office in Florence, Alabama.

Since she published the photo, it has been shared over half a million times across social media.

Wilson had been sitting in the waiting room when the mother, Jade West, walked in with her 1-year-old son asleep on her shoulder. After the front desk attendant handed the mother a clipboard with the necessary paperwork, she seemed stumped on how to fill out the information with the boy in hand.

RELATEDPoliceman Moved by Plea for Parenthood Adopts Baby of Drug-Addicted Homeless Woman

“She goes to sit down, and you could just hear thinking, ‘Now how am I going to do this?’” Wilson told Inside Edition. “Just then, from across the room, an elderly man piped up, ‘Could I hold that baby for you?’ And the mother, beaming, replied ‘Yes, that would be amazing.’”

The man, who was later identified as Joe Hale, happily cradled the little boy while West filled out the paperwork unencumbered.

Touched by the sweet exchange, Wilson took a picture of them and posted it to Facebook.

The gesture was particularly emotional for Wilson since she is the mother of seven biracial children of her own.

How Detoxing From Heavy Metals Saved a Man’s Life When All Else Failed

The Lesson: Heavy metals like cadmium, lead, and mercury can lead to a diverse and serious palate of health complications, including everything from cancer to depression. Josh Macin suffered with mercury poisoning from tooth fillings, sushi, and other sources for three years before finally realizing what ailed him. Many mental disorders are associated with symptoms of heavy metal poisoning and can be traced all the way back to Roman times. Heavy metal detoxification is a powerful tool with some good science behind it – and it’s a tool that saved this young man’s life. In this podcast, Macin outlines the debilitating spiritual and mental struggles he endured throughout his bout with mercury-induced mental illness. Furthermore, he asks the world for a little more understanding in regards to the hardships faced by people around us.

Notable Excerpt: “First would be for people to change their water. Our water makes up 75% of our blood, and of our body. So we’ve got to change our water. I love natural spring water from the earth, I love distilled water from my home distiller; and when we change our water we change our thoughts, we change our vibration. It’s very important that we start drinking good quality water. The other part of that physical advice would be to potentially start experimenting with some kind of fasting.”

The Guest: Josh Macin was the 2010 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion and the 2012 Pan-American champion, who, around October 2013, began to suffer from severe panic attacks and depression. After trying everything in an attempt to heal himself—from psychedelic drugs and yoga to supplementation and more conventional pharmaceuticals—he was prepared to take his own life, devising a plan to instigate a shark attack. Upon listening to a voice inside his head, however, he decided to battle on a little longer – and that’s when he learned about mercury poisoning. After going on a heavy metal detoxification process, his battle was won, and he now owns a company, The Detox Dudes, which helps others overcome the same struggles that found him so desperately trapped in the jaws of fate (and nearly sharks).

The Host: Jairek Robbins is the son of famous American motivational speaker Tony Robbins. He follows in his father’s path by offering speaking, motivational talks, and programs – primarily for business people. He is the author of Live It!: Achieve Success by Living with Purpose, and the podcast that he launched this August, What the World Needs More Of, is currently number 36 on iTunes.

In ‘Freakish Miracle’, Man’s Change of Fishing Spot Results in Rescuing 18-Month-old From the Ocean

A New Zealand camper came to the rescue of an 18-month-old boy after he spontaneously decided to go fishing from a different spot on the beach.

Two weeks ago, Gus Hutt woke up in the early hours of the morning so he could set up his fishing lines on Matata Beach in Whakatane.

Though he usually walks directly to the shoreline from Murphy’s Holiday Camp site, he decided to set up his fishing poles 350 feet (100 meters) away from his normal spot on the sands.

As he was monitoring his lines, however, he noticed something floating about 50 feet (15 meters) away from his rod. At first, he thought it was a doll – but as he pulled it from the water, he realized that it was a child after it “gave a small squeak.”

RELATEDWatch Good Samaritan Teenager Revive a Squirrel With CPR After it Ran Into His Car

“He was floating at a steady pace with a rip in the water. If I hadn’t been there, or if I had just been a minute later I wouldn’t have seen him,” Hutt told the New Zealand Herald. “He was bloody lucky, but he just wasn’t meant to go; it wasn’t his time.”

According to BBC, it had been the boy’s first time at the beach. In his excitement to explore the area, he had unzipped his parents’ tent while they were asleep and crawled out onto the sands. Fortunately, his distance from the shoreline suggests that he wasn’t in the water for very long before Hutt saw him.

Shortly after he was rescued, he was taken to the hospital for treatment, where he was deemed to be in good health. Emergency response services alerted the parents to their son’s escape – and though they were “horrified” by the news, they were relieved that he was okay.

“It came as a shock to everyone. It was a very, very lucky result… it could have been a very tragic incident,” the camp’s owner told BBC. “It’s a freakish miracle.”

The parents made sure to thank Hutt before leaving the beach, and the fisherman remarked on how the boy seemed unaffected by the dramatic incident.

“He was wriggling trying to get down to have a look at everything, he was just a lovely, cheeky little fella,” he told the Herald.

Swiss Businessman is Contributing $1 Billion Towards Protecting 30% of the Planet

A Swiss businessman is taking it upon himself to ensure the planet’s survival by contributing $1 billion to an astonishing international conservation effort.

In a recent op-ed that he published through the New York Times, Hansjörg Wyss announced that he will be using the money to launch the Wyss Campaign for Nature: an ambitious collaborative mission to protect 30% of the world’s surface by 2030.

The money will be distributed through his foundation over the course of the next decade in partnership with the National Geographic Society, the Nature Conservancy, and Argentinian environmental group Fundacion Flora y Fauna.

“This money will support locally led conservation efforts around the world, push for increased global targets for land and ocean protection, seek to raise public awareness about the importance of this effort, and fund scientific studies to identify the best strategies to reach our target,” wrote Wyss.

LOOKHistoric Pacific Cleanup Vessel Has Been Successful With Trials at Sea And Will Soon Hit the Patch

This is not the billionaire’s first contribution towards natural landscapes, either – his foundation has already spent $415 million on preserving roughly 40 million acres around the world.

With scientists estimating that half the world needs to be protected in order to save essential plant and wildlife species, however, Wyss’s latest goal could make a huge difference for the Earth’s future.

“We need to embrace the radical, time-tested and profoundly democratic idea of public-land protection that was invented in the United States, tested in Yellowstone and Yosemite, and now proven the world over,” says Wyss. “For the sake of all living things, let’s see to it that far more of our planet is protected by the people, for the people and for all time.”

People From All Faiths Are Forming Protective ‘Rings of Peace’ Around Synagogues

Hundreds of people from different faiths are standing in support of their Jewish neighbors by forming protective “rings of peace” around Toronto synagogues.

Following the recent synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, the National Council of Canadian Muslims orchestrated the event as a means of showing solidarity for Jewish communities during Jewish services that took place on Friday evening and Saturday morning.

Though they specifically worked in partnership with Islamic mosques to facilitate the gathering, they also welcomed and invited people of all faiths to join hands and stand shoulder-to-shoulder around 9 city synagogues.

“It’s about the sanctity of life,” Farhad Khadim, one of the founding directors of the Islamic Institute of Toronto, told HuffPost Canada by phone. “For everyone on earth, whether you are part of a certain religion or do not practice religion at all, a right to safety is paramount.

RELATEDChristians Protect Mosques on Fri., Muslims Guard Churches on Sunday

“It could be a mosque or a synagogue or a nightclub. It doesn’t matter. Life is sacred.”

This is not the first time that the Jewish and Muslim communities of Toronto have come together in opposition of tragedy; after there was a mosque shooting in Quebec City last year, Khadim said that he was given the courage to continue attending his religious services after Jews, Christians, and other non-religious participants formed protective rings around mosques across the country.

MOREMuslims Raise $250,000 for Pittsburgh Synagogue: ‘Whatever you need … let us know, we’ll be there’

Since those simple gestures gave him the “peace and confidence” to continue attending services, he says that Canadian Muslims are now more than happy to return their favor.

Muslim-Americans are stepping up to the plate as well. Earlier this week, Islamic groups managed to raise over $200,000 for the shooting victims and their families. They have also volunteered to form similar “rings of peace” and they offer their supportive presence for Jewish individuals who may feel anxious about going out in public by themselves.

The Jimmy John’s delivery driver who went above and beyond the call of duty to help a fellow veteran in need has been rewarded for his kindness by the restaurant chain’s CEO whom he’s never met.

Jimmy John Liautaud, the founder of the sandwich empire, flew from Chicago to Columbus, Nebraska, so he could personally deliver a thank-you gift to Zach Hillmer after a wrong number—dialed out of desperation—became the perfectly right number.

Hillmer made international headlines last week after a woman accidentally dialed Jimmy John’s in a frantic attempt to call her brother’s case worker. Not knowing she had dialed the sandwich restaurant, the desperate woman went on to say that her brother was very sick and couldn’t afford an ambulance or taxi. Without hesitating, Hillmer volunteered to bring the ailing veteran to the hospital.

After being successfully treated for his ailments, his sister made a Facebook post praising Hillmer for his compassion during their time of need. As the story was picked up by news outlets in the aftermath of the incident, Hillmer mentioned that he drives a 27-year-old Chevrolet Cavalier in need of repairs.

As a means of rewarding Hillmer for his good deed, Liautaud presented the 38-year-old employee with a brand new Ford Escape.

The new automobile was decorated with Jimmy John’s decals, which Hillmer was free to remove, but the delighted driver says he’ll definitely be keeping them on.

“I don’t even have the words to say really,” Hillmer told the Columbus Telegram. “It was an amazing thing when Jimmy called and told me what he was going to do. It’s pretty emotional for me—I’ve only ever seen pictures of him, interviews on TV.”

It hasn’t only been emotional for Hillmer. Employees at the company’s corporate headquarters say they’ve been moved almost to tears from all the phone calls from veterans across the country praising Zach and his manager, Jason Voss, for making that very special delivery.

Life is already difficult as a single mother, but for Rebecca Polston, every day is a battle of strength and courage.

Her 2-year-old son, Rhylon, has been on dialysis since he began his fight against kidney disease at just one month old; he undergoes this process for ten hours every night and Rebecca is with him for every moment of it.

Until he receives the kidney transplant he needs, she is unable to work due to his medical condition, but she still relies heavily on her car because emergencies happen a lot.

Devastation struck this summer when Rebecca’s car was totaled by a hit and run driver. With only liability insurance and no job, Rebecca had no way to scrape money together for new wheels. For this small family, the future was uncertain—until a radio station heard about her story.

Rebecca and Rhylon were treated to dinner at a restaurant in Roanoke, Texas, unaware of what KLTY 94.9 had in store for them. They finished their meal and were brought out to the parking lot, where they were greeted by Bonnie Curry and the #SpeakLove team: a group of staffers from the station who are dedicated to doing good deeds for people in their community. A check for $1,000 was presented to them, as well as brand new toys for Rhylon—but the kindness didn’t stop there.

George Grubbs, the owner of a local INFINITI dealership suddenly revealed himself and handed over a set of keys and a brand new car—silver, topped with a red ribbon, and completely paid for.

Customers Keep Buying Up All of Donut Shop’s Pastries So He Can Go Home Early to Be With Ailing Wife

The only thing sweeter than the donuts at Donut City is the community’s love for the restaurant owners.

Almost every day for the last 28 years, John and Stella Chhan have opened up their donut shop in Seal Beach, California at 4:30AM. They’re always greeting customers with a smile, and they barely ever take a day off.

So when Stella stopped showing up behind the counter, the customers asked John about her absence – and they were shocked by his response.

Since Stella suffered a brain aneurysm last month, she has been recovering at a nursing care facility. Though she has slowly regained some of her strength, she was in bad shape after being taken to the emergency room.

RELATEDThis Entire Town Became Autism-Friendly After Every Business Agreed to Apply Four Specific Measures

John was devastated by the incident, but grateful when she finally started to show signs of recovery. He has continued to run the shop by himself (with some help from Stella’s sister), and always returns to her side once he is done with the day’s work.

One of the Chhan’s regular customers at Donut City heard about their situation and came up with an idea: if everyone in the community bought more of the restaurant’s donuts, then John could close the shop early and spend more time with his wife.

After posting her idea to a community social media page, locals immediately stepped up to the plate. People started buying donuts, croissants, and muffins by the dozen.

Over the course of the last few weeks, John has sold out of pastries several hours earlier than usual—sometimes he can even close the store at 10AM.

He’s also been quick to express his overwhelming gratitude for the support. “We are so thankful,” he told the OC Register with hands over his heart.

The people of Seal Beach are more than happy to help out their favorite donut shop proprietors. They even tried to set up a GoFundMe page for the Chhans, but John said that he already has enough money – he is just happy to spend time with Stella.
