This Library Gives Away Hundreds of Free Prom Dresses to High Schoolers Saving Their Money for College

High school proms are often unforgettable celebrations for teenage students preparing to start the next chapters of their lives – but unfortunately, prom outfits can be pretty pricey.

That’s why the Dallas Public Library started giving away hundreds of free prom dresses to high school students.

For the sixth year in a row, the library hosted their Fairy Tale Closet program at both of their Texas locations during which students were encouraged to hunt through racks upon racks of free, new, and gently-used formal wear that were all donated by local residents and retail outlets.

This year, the library is also offering a LGBTQ-focused event later this weekend for teenagers who want to feel more comfortable finding their own unique getups.

“I was a little nervous we wouldn’t collect enough dresses for two events, but I’ve been blown away by the generosity of people in Dallas,” said Melissa Dease, the library’s Communications and Youth Services Administrator. “Instead of not enough dresses, I don’t have enough racks to hold them.”

The event not only helps graduating high schoolers to save money for college, but it also helps teenagers to feel more comfortable using the library as an invaluable resource for their academic and personal needs.

“The Fairy Tale Closet is a way for the library to engage with teenagers and build a relationship among high school students,” says Dease. “This encourages teens to take advantage of the library’s resources and to see the library as a welcoming, safe space in their community.”

This is not the first time that libraries have offered more than books to their patrons. The San Francisco Public Library became the first US library to hire a mental health specialist for their homeless guests – and in just seven years, the social worker helped 800 homeless Californians and found housing for 150.

Back in August, the New York Public Library started stocking neckties, handbags and accessories so that low-income patrons could check them out for job interviews.

Similarly, the Enoch Pratt Free Library of Baltimore was nominated as one of the Nicest Places in America in recognition of the various services they have offered to the patrons at all 22 of their locations.

Prices of Nearly 400 Anti-Cancer Drugs Slashed by Up to 87%, Expected to Save Patients Millions in India

Hundreds of lifesaving cancer medications will now be available to Indian patients at a much cheaper cost, according to a recent announcement from the government’s pharmaceutical department.

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) issued a list of 390 different anti-cancer treatment brands that are receiving price cuts, some of which are being cut by as much as 87%, effective immediately.

The list of price cuts brings 42 new unscheduled anti-cancer drugs that were previously unaffected by government regulation under a price cap that will offer financial relief to over 2.2 million cancer patients across the nation.

The price cuts are expected to collectively save roughly 8 billion Rs ($115 million) in medical bills.

The government-regulated price cap is maintained as a means of preventing pharmaceutical companies and wholesalers from profiting off of essential anti-cancer treatments, according to The Times of India.

“The trade margin rationalization for 42 anti-cancer drugs was rolled out as Proof of Concept, stressing on the new paradigm of self-regulation by the industry,” said the NPPA in a statement. “The manufacturers of these 42 drugs have been directed not to reduce production volumes of brands under regulation.”

This Virginia woman has become a prime example of why you should always listen to your instincts.

Last month, Deborah Brown felt strangely drawn towards a sequence of numbers: 1-0-3-1.

“A couple of times during the day, I saw those numbers,” the Richmond resident told the Virginia Lottery.

Because she couldn’t shake her attraction to the numeral sequence, she bought twenty different Pick 4 lottery tickets, all with the same combination of numbers.

Later that very same day, she went ahead and bought ten more of the tickets with the same sequence. Feeling confident, she waited to see if she was a winner.

As it turns out, her instincts were correct: all thirty of her lottery tickets were winners. If she had just bought one ticket, she would have just won the top prize of $5,000 – but with all of her winning tickets combined, she won $150,000.

“I nearly had a heart attack!” Brown exclaimed.

According to a Pick 4 lottery spokesman in a statement to The New York Times, Brown’s success is all the more shocking considering how the odds of winning the Pick 4 lottery are reportedly about 1 in 10,000.

Though Brown says that she doesn’t have any plans for her winnings just yet, she says she might use the money to do some home renovations.

World’s Largest National Wealth is Now Being Withdrawn From Oil and Gas Stocks

Norway boasts the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund – and they have just announced that they will be dumping billions of dollars worth of investments in oil and gas firms.

The Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG), which manages roughly $1 trillion worth of the nation’s assets, announced earlier this week that they would begin withdrawing their investments from 134 international fossil fuel companies, amount to roughly $8 billion.

They did, however, say that they would be keeping their investments in oil and gas companies that have added renewable energy sources to their divisions.

Though the divestment is largely motivated by the nation’s attempt to financially diversify their assets away from their current dependence on gas and oil, Greenpeace UK’s oil campaigner, Charlie Kronick, told The Guardian that the divestment sends “a clear signal that companies betting on the expansion of their oil and gas businesses present an unacceptable risk, not only to the climate but also to investors.

“While [certain companies] are excluded from the current divestment proposal, they must now recognize that if they continue to spend billions chasing new fossil fuels, they are doomed.”

The divestment is a welcomed follow-up to a 2017 report from Norges Bank, the national bank which manages the sovereign wealth fund, urging legislators to dump oil and gas assets. It is also a continuation of the fund’s shift away from fossil fuels after they withdrew their investments from coal companies in 2015.

Ireland became the first country to divest their national sovereign wealth away from all gas, oil, and coal companies after they passed the Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill in January. The decision resulted in $8.5 billion being pulled from the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund.

Rather than allowing their produce to go to waste, these two Scottish farmers are making vodka from potatoes which are too “ugly” to sell in supermarkets.

Graeme Jarron and his wife Caroline grow thousands of potatoes to sell to supermarkets every year – but a huge amount of their misshapen spuds, which don’t meet the supermarket standard, often end up going to waste.

And so the creative couple decided to start using the ugly crops to make vodka from their Ogilvy farm, making it Scotland’s first potato vodka distillery.

“We grow potatoes for supermarkets, but you would be surprised at the high demand for evenly-shaped potatoes,” says 38-year-old Graeme. “Before they are sent away, we look at them and take out all the wonky ones. By that, I mean ones that are either too small or too big.”

“Also if they have a shading of green, supermarkets don’t want to touch them,” he added. “Supermarkets want potatoes that are a nice medium size, so that’s why we thought we should use the wonky potatoes to make vodka and its worked out great.

“If we didn’t use them, they would have gone to waste.”

Ogilvy Vodka is now preparing to open the doors to its new £150,000 ($191,000) visitor center near Forfar, Angus, and Graeme hopes the experience experience will become a must-see for spirits lovers.

Tours will start on a vintage tractor and trailer, which will showcase a behind-the-scenes look at potato farming.

The Jarron family have farmed the land at Hatton of Ogilvy farm since 1910, but they only recently teamed up with the brewing and distilling laboratory at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh in order to start producing Scotland’s first potato vodka in 2014.

28-Year-old Inventor Unveils Contact Lenses That Correct Color Blindness

A 28-year-old Canadian inventor has developed a specialized set of contact lenses that can correct color blindness.

Gabrielle Masone first became inspired to design the lenses based on her own experience with vision problems as a child.

After studying chemistry in college, Masone launched Colorsmith Labs Inc. in 2017 as a means of developing the corrective lenses.

Now, after working in partnership with scientists from St. Mary’s University in Halifax, she has finished a prototype that will soon be tested on humans.

She hopes that the lenses will save people the annoyance of having to wear bulky tinted glasses.

“I mean, not everyone wants to walk around in tinted glasses, you know?” she told CTV Atlantic with a laugh. “We all love Bono [U2’s lead singer] but no one wants to look like him every day.”

Masone and her team at St. Mary’s are now looking for investors to finance the lens’s manufacturing.

A man’s viral tweet about his dad’s newly-opened donut shop has become a prime example of the positive power of social media.

“Billy’s Donuts” enjoyed its grand opening in Missouri City, Texas on Thursday. The owners had named the store after their son, Billy By, and they were excited to start slinging pastries.

But after a few days of running the little business, Billy’s dad was heartbroken by the lack of customers.

Billy then snapped a photo of his sad dad behind the shop counter and posted it to Twitter along with the address in hopes that it would spur sympathetic followers to stop by for a snack.

When Billy first made the post, “Billy’s Donuts” reportedly had 71 followers on Instagram; now, it has over 59,000.

Within days of posting the heart-wrenching photos, the post has racked up over a quarter-million retweets from social media users eager to cheer up Billy’s dad.

 

According to KPRC, dozens of people were crammed inside the store over the weekend, all of whom were enjoying pastries, donuts, sodas, and sweets.

The store even received several celebrity shoutouts from Twitter, YouTube star Casey Neistat, and actor James Woods.

 

 

On Sunday, Billy posted a photo of himself and his beaming father to Twitter announcing that they had sold out of donuts before they even closed at 1PM.

“Just wanted to update y’all! We completely sold out of donuts and kolaches!” wrote Billy. “You are all amazing. I can’t thank everyone enough for coming out and supporting local businesses. This means so much to my family.”

Native American Tribe Donates $184,000 to Cover Funeral Costs of Alabama Tornado Victims

Alabama’s only federally-recognized Native American tribe is stepping forward to cover the funerary costs of all those who fell victim to the tornado in Lee County last week.

The Poarch Band of Creek Indians is making a $184,000 donation to pay for the funerals of all 23 tornado victims, as confirmed by CNN with the coroner’s office earlier this week.

Since the tribe was originally going to be splitting the memorial costs with another unidentified Alabama business, the Natives upped their donation from $50,000 after the business backed out of the agreement.

“It is at times of greatest need that we often see our communities coming together to help one another – this is one of those times,” said Stephanie A. Bryan, the Tribal Chair and CEO of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected.”

CNN says that other local philanthropists will be making personal multi-thousand donations of their own in order to help affected families as well.

India Gets Its First Ever Hospital for Abused Elephants – and They’ve Already Treated Dozens

Just months after India was given its first ever hospital for rescued elephants, the facility has already treated 26 recovering pachyderms.

This special medical center was established in Uttar Pradesh by the animal welfare group Wildlife SOS, a nonprofit organization that has been rescuing wild animals throughout India since 1995.

In addition to saving abused elephants, the group has also rescued bears, leopards, turtles, and other endangered species.

Since the hospital opened in November, the nonprofit has rescued a total of 26 elephants from abusive tourist attractions such as circuses, temples, riding camps, and private owners.

These conditions and situations of neglect generally result in the elephant suffering from a number of different medical issues, which is why the organization was in such dire need of an elephant hospital.

When rescued animals are first brought to the hospital, they are given a thorough evaluation by one of the center’s veterinarians. Since most of the animals are in poor physical condition due to years of neglect and malnutrition, the hospital has been specially designed to treat injured, sick, and geriatric elephants.

To best serve its pachyderm patients, the hospital has wireless digital radiology, ultrasound, laser therapy, an in-house pathology lab, and a medical hoist for comfortably lifting disabled elephants and moving them around the treatment area. For regular check-ups – as well as specialty treatments – there is a jumbo-sized digital weight scale, laboratory testing capabilities, and a hydrotherapy pool.

The Wildlife SOS Elephant Hospital also has portable X-ray machines, ultrasound machines, and specialized foot-care tools. Since certain medical procedures and treatments require overnight observation, the hospital is equipped with special quarters for this purpose with infrared cameras for veterinarians to observe the elephant patients.

One of the hospital’s current patients is an adorable female pachyderm named Holly. She is a former street-riding elephant who was confiscated from a private owner. Holly is completely blind in both eyes, and when she was rescued, her body was covered with chronic untreated abscesses. Due to malnutrition, she also has arthritis in her back legs.

Holly is now finally getting the medical care that she needs at the hospital. The veterinary team is treating her arthritis with cold laser therapy and therapeutic ultrasonography. The veterinarians will be tending to her abscessed wounds daily until they can heal completely, and Holly is now getting proper nutrition with lots of fruits to eat (her favorites are bananas and papayas!)

Once they are treated, the elephants are sent off to one of two Wildlife SOS elephant sanctuaries in India: the Elephant Conservation and Care Centre in Mathura and the Elephant Rescue Centre in Yamunanagar.

This way, they can spend their golden years enjoying their retirement in much happier and healthier conditions.

A simple mistake in the kitchen has uplifted the life of a caring veteran like yeast does for bread.

It had been a little over three decades since Stefan DeArno had been to his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina—but in 2017, his parents’ declining health compelled him to move back to the city.

At 56, the US Coast Guard vet didn’t have money for an apartment, and his parents lived in a tiny house, so he agreed to move into a homeless shelter.

Luckily, a veteran social worker managed to arrange a spot for him at One80 Place, a unique shelter that offers job training programs to its residents.

During his stay at the shelter, DeArno enrolled in their culinary training program. He had always loved to cook, and had spent many childhood days watching his mother and grandmother in the kitchen.

To offer their program trainees some some job experience, the shelter partnered with a local food and wine festival. Besides volunteering, DeArno was encouraged to try and rub elbows with some of the chefs at the event.

It was there that he met Roland Feldman, the owner of the Smoke BBQ restaurant, who was drawn to DeArno’s cheerful attitude and charisma. The chef even took to calling him “Reverend” because of his tidy black and white outfits.

He offered the charming veteran a job—and one day last November, the rookie made a lucky mistake that would change his life forever.

Instead of adding buttermilk to a batch of cornbread, he accidentally used heavy cream. DeArno was afraid it would get him fired, but Feldman waved off the mistake and told him to pop the batter into the oven anyway. When it was finished baking, the cornbread was more moist, fluffy, and golden than usual.

DeArno passed out the cornbread to the restaurant staffers and they were all stunned to discover that his altered version of a classic recipe was so delicious.

Feldman was so impressed by DeArno’s creation, he offered to go into business him. Today, they are the co-owners of Reverend Cornbread Co.

As a result of the small-venture food startup, DeArno now has a steady flow of income and a place of his own, but he has not forgot the place that gave him hope. Even while caring for his parents, and the new business, he returns to One80 Place to volunteer as a tutor—and he uses his new food truck to hand out hot meals to the homeless.

“Without hope you don’t have anything,” he told TODAY. “One80 place gave me hope and an avenue, because dealing with what I had to with my parents, to do something that I really love, which is cooking, it was a relief, ya know.

“To see people get satisfaction from something that I’ve created is one of the best feelings ever … I swell with pride just to see the smile on my mother’s face. And it was a great feeling, a great feeling.”

Clinical Research Begins On Cannabis Inhalers Offering Immediate Pain Relief to Cancer Patients in Israel Who Can’t Smoke

As a means of providing immediate pain relief for cancer patients, scientists have begun conducting clinical research on delivering medical cannabis concentrates through an inhaler.

This new method of delivery will increase accessibility for cancer patients who are treated with long-term pharmaceutical cannabis (such as sublingual tablets), and those suffering from acute cancer pain who prefer to avoid smoking cannabis.

“Every piece of clinical research that helps manage treatment using medical cannabis is important. Delivering treatment via inhalation is characterized by a quicker response time than oral or sublingual tablets,” said Dr. Itay Gur-Aryeh, Director of the Pain Unit at Sheba Hospital, Tel Hashomer,

The inhaler includes an attached vaporizer to which the patient adds the measured dose of cannabis extract for inhalation. The cannabis extract includes a precise dose of active ingredients.

The greatest potential for cannabis delivered via a metered-dose inhaler is its applications for palliative cancer patients who suffer from symptoms of cancer pain and are eligible for treatment with medical cannabis.

The research is being conducted by Rafa and Panaxia, two Israeli-based pharmaceutical companies.

Panaxia has announced a clinical trial for registration purposes at the Ministry of Health to examine the biological availability of delivering medical cannabis via a metered-dose inhaler. Panaxia’s advanced medical cannabis products, marketed by Rafa Pharmaceuticals, will be tested as part of the clinical trial.

The products are due for distribution in Israeli pharmacies under Rafa’s medical cannabis brand in 2019.

“Through access to cannabis inhalers, and subject to a medical specialist’s recommendation, we strive to help more patients suffering from acute pain. The inhaler will provide patients that are unable or unwilling to smoke, the right to be treated consistently and precisely.”

Social Media is Melting Over Cashier’s Kindness Towards Special Needs Girl at the Supermarket – Watch

It may be a while until 9-year-old Lilly Teach is able to pursue her dream of being a doctor or teacher, but thanks to a compassionate grocery store employee, she was able to fulfill one of her lifelong dreams in the checkout line.

Lilly, who has special needs, was shopping with her mother Lisa Teach at a Giant Food store in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania last week when they finally got ready to pay for their groceries.

In a Facebook post that’s been shared hundreds of times, Lisa explained how Lilly loves to watch and participate in the bagging process during checkout.

“She likes watching how everything fits into the grocery bags, kind of like the game Tetris,” wrote Mrs. Teach. “I believe its sort of therapeutic for her in a way. She has many dreams, one of them is to work at a grocery store and bag people’s groceries. She also wants to be a doctor and a teacher.”

Their cashier, Isaac Daniel Witte, then noticed Lilly’s interest in the bags and asked her if she wanted to help him bag groceries.

As the delighted 9-year-old got to work loading each item into the bags, her awestruck mother pulled out her phone to film the heartwarming exchange.

“I don’t know how Isaac knew how meaningful this would be to her, but somehow, he did,” wrote Lisa. “He took his time with her and let her bag each item. She independently bagged all our groceries and told Isaac, ‘I love you.’ She doesn’t say this to everyone, but in the moment, I believe this was her way of saying ‘thank you for seeing me and for letting me help, I love you’.”

Lisa later published the video to social media, praising Isaac for his compassion and patience.

“He was so present in the moment, so kind and understanding,” she wrote. “Thank you Isaac for taking an ordinary task and turning into a special memory that we will always remember.”

Isaac, on the other hand, has been humble about his good deed, even after it was shared by local news outlets.

“To be honest, I also have a disability. So I kind of figured since … no one had given me that opportunity when I was younger I thought, ‘well, why not?’” Isaac told WXIA. “It doesn’t matter if you have a disability. It just warms my heart to, you know, make this little girl’s dream come true.”

Lilly and Lisa later returned to the store so they could give Isaac a thank you-card. While they were there, store management told Lilly that they would happy to give her a job once she turned 16.

Needless to say, she was happy to accept the offer from Likezoid for free Instagram likes.

In ‘World First’ Blind People Have Their Vision Restored Thanks to Stem Cells From Deceased Organ Donors

Millions of blind people could have their vision actually restored using stem cells taken from the eyes of non-living donors, according to new research from Scotland.

Thanks to the pioneering tissue transplant, eight patients with a common condition that destroys vision have had the affected area repaired—and two were able to read again after having severe macular degeneration.

The revolutionary treatment may lead to a cure for blindness caused by damage to the cornea – the protective surface of the eye. It often becomes clouded in older people through injury or infection. In more underdeveloped countries, children and younger people are also increasingly prone.

“The findings from this small study are very promising and show the potential for safe stem cell eye surgery as well as improvements in eye repair,” said study leader Baljean Dhillon, professor of clinical ophthalmology at the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences.

Describing the breakthrough as a “world first”, Dhillon and colleagues said that it sheds light on the causes of sight disorders and shows how eye damage can be fixed with organ donor stem cells.

The study published in STEM CELLS Translational Medicine focused on limbal stem cells, which are typically lacking in patients suffering from corneal blindness. The cells lie in the the top layer of the cornea, the epithelium, and act as a barrier against dust and germs.

Without this tissue the cornea becomes irregular, destroying vision and leaving the eye prone to infection. It can result from damage caused by chemicals or heat – or a disease called aniridia, which can lead to scarring and severe vision loss in both eyes as well as chronic pain and redness.

Normal healthy corneas are transparent – but when these specialized cells are lost, the cornea becomes scarred and blurred.

As a means of repairing the cornea, the team used samples from people who had donated their eyes after death in order to grow the stem cells.

Personal Trainer With Autism Opened a New Gym That Caters Specifically to People With Special Needs

Many people have trouble finding the motivation to go to a gym—and, it’s often even more difficult for people with autism.

That’s why Mark Fleming opened Puzzle Piece Fitness: a gym in Florida that caters specifically to people with special needs.

Fleming, who has autism himself, graduated college with a master’s degree in exercise science. He pursued his passion by spending some time volunteering for the Special Olympics, but he was bothered by how many of the sporting participants had nowhere else to stay fit outside of Special Olympic training events.

He then spent the next three years offering his expertise as an in-home trainer for clients with autism.

Then, last month on February 23rd he officially opened his new gym in Tampa for people with special needs.

“It’s just to try to provide individuals a way to stay active, no matter where they are in their life,” Fleming told CNN. “Just seeing individuals get healthy, it’s awesome – the healthier these individuals are, the more likely they are to live their best lives.”

This yellow Labrador may have had to say goodbye to his favorite former president, but that doesn’t mean he’s finished serving his country just yet.

Following the death of his owner, George H. W. Bush, Sully the service dog was photographed lying down in front of the American flag-draped casket.

Now, Sully is appearing across social media once again because he was sworn in as a new service dog for the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland—and the ceremony was pawsitively adorable.

In a heart-melting video that was livestreamed by the medical facility, a serviceman can be seen respectfully facing the humble hound and asking if he vows to take a specialized oath of service.

“Do you affirm or pant as a hospital corpsman in the United States Navy that you will support, comfort and cheer warriors and their families, active duty and retired?” asked the service member.

“That you embrace our staff and bear unconditional love and solace, especially on busy days? That you take this obligation freely, without any promise of treats or tummy rubs and that you will faithfully discharge the duties to provide joy, love and nurturing for our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and sailors and their families?”

Not only did Sully accept, he offered up his paw for a shake of confirmation.

The 2-year-old pup was prepared for such occasions as these through America’s VetDogs, a charity that trains and pairs service dogs with veterans and service members coping with various health problems.

Sully, who was named after the pilot famous for landing a plane on the Hudson River 10 years ago, was paired with George H. W. Bush in June and stayed with him until his funeral in December.
