Teacher’s Painstaking Microsoft Diagrams Spur Tech Company to Give Back to His Ghana School

This teacher is being hailed for his dedication towards teaching his students about computer sciences – but without any computers.

Owura Kwadwo Hottish is a 33-year-old educator from Ghana who teaches a middle school computer science class at the Betenase M/A Junior High School in Kumasi.

Despite the school not being equipped with any computers, Hottish still manages to teach the kids by spending thirty minutes before every class drawing detailed diagrams of different computer programs on the blackboard.

Hottish has been teaching lessons like this for the last six years. Since schools in the region are rarely equipped with actual computers, it is considered a very normal method of teaching.

LOOKTeacher Cuts Hair to Match Student Who Was Mocked

The teacher recently went viral, however, after he posted photos of his drawings to Facebook.

The drawings, which featured a startlingly accurate depiction of Microsoft Office, impressed thousands of social media users around the world. Not only that, but it caught the attention of Microsoft.

Spurred to help the school, the tech company started out by sending Hottish to an international educators’ conference in Singapore, which was the teacher’s first time outside of Ghana. When he finished giving a lecture about his teaching methods to the Education Exchange – a gathering of almost 400 educators and school leaders from 91 countries – he was given a standing ovation.

Anthony Salcito, the vice president of Worldwide Education at Microsoft, said: “Your work has really inspired the world. It really shows the amazing innovation and commitment and passion that teachers have for helping their students get ready for the future. At Microsoft, we believe that educators are heroes and are pushing the boundaries of what is possible to transform learning and making a direct impact on the experiences and lifelong skills of their students.”

Hottish, on the other hand, told Microsoft that he never thought his lessons were that impressive, saying: “I have been doing this every time the lesson I’m teaching demands it. I’ve drawn monitors, system units, keyboards, a mouse, a formatting toolbar, a drawing toolbar, and so on. The students were okay with that. They are used to me doing everything on the board for them. When I did this, it was nothing new or strange for them.”

As the cherry on top of the whole experience, Microsoft is also working with local organizations to giving the school an entire computer lab. Hottish will also gain access to the Microsoft Certified Educator Program (MCE) for professional development.

“Something very positive has come out of this and I am very happy,” says Hottish. “We are no longer going to use the chalkboard again. We will have computers.”

Device That Draws Water From the Driest Desert Air Could Bring Hydration to Needy Regions

In field tests, device harvests water from desert air
MIT-developed system could provide drinking water even in extremely arid locations.
Written by David L. Chandler
MIT News

It seems like getting something for nothing, but you really can get drinkable water right out of the driest of desert air.

Even in the most arid places on Earth, there is some moisture in the air, and a practical way to extract that moisture could be a key to survival in such bone-dry locations. Now, researchers at MIT have proved that such an extraction system can work.

The new device, which was powered solely by sunlight, is based on a concept the team first proposed last year, has now been field-tested in the very dry air of Tempe, Arizona, confirming the potential of the new method.

MOREStudent Wins $250,000 for Using Math to Solve a Potato Problem–and it Could Save Farmers Billions

The system, based on relatively new high-surface-area materials called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), can extract potable water from even the driest of desert air, the researchers say, with relative humidities as low as 10 percent. Current methods for extracting water from air require much higher levels – 100 percent humidity for fog-harvesting methods, and above 50 percent for dew-harvesting refrigeration-based systems, which also require large amounts of energy for cooling. So the new system could potentially fill an unmet need for water even in the world’s driest regions.

By running a test device on a rooftop at Arizona State University in Tempe, Wang says, the team “was field-testing in a place that’s representative of these arid areas, and showed that we can actually harvest the water, even in subzero dewpoints.”

RELATEDAmerica’s First Permitted, 3D-printed House Was Built in Texas in Less Than 24 Hours

Although it was a small proof-of-concept device, if scaled up its output would be equivalent to more than a quarter-liter of water per day per kilogram of MOF, the researchers say. With an optimal material choice, output can be as high as three times that of the current version, says Kim. Unlike any of the existing methods for extracting water from air at very low humidities, “with this approach, you actually can do it, even under these extreme conditions,” Wang says.

Not only does this system work at lower humidities than dew harvesting does, says Rao, but those systems require pumps and compressors that can wear out, whereas “this has no moving parts. It can be operated in a completely passive manner, in places with low humidity but large amounts of sunlight.”

Whereas the team had previously described the possibility of running the system passively, Rao says, “now we have demonstrated that this is indeed possible.” The current version can only operate over a single night-and-day cycle with sunlight, Kim says, but “continuous operation is also possible by utilizing abundant low-grade heat sources such as biomass and waste heat.”

CHECK OUT: Scientists Have Found an ‘Off Switch’ For Celiac’s Disease

The next step, Wang says, is to work on scaling up the system and boosting its efficiency. “We hope to have a system that’s able to produce liters of water.” These small, initial test systems were only designed to produce a few milliliters, to prove the concept worked in real-world conditions, but she says “we want to see water pouring out!” The idea would be to produce units sufficient to supply water for individual households.

The team tested the water produced by the system and found no traces of impurities. Mass-spectrometer testing showed “there’s nothing from the MOF that leaches into the water,” Wang says. “It shows the material is indeed very stable, and we can get high-quality water.”

MORELung Cancer Patient Given a Year to Live is in Remission Thanks to Cuban Vaccine

“This technology is fantastic, because of the practical demonstration of an air-cooled water harvesting system based on MOFs operating in a real desert climate,” says Yang Yang, a professor of materials science and engineering at the University of California at Los Angeles, who was not involved in this work.

“This provides a new approach to solving the problem of water scarcity in arid climates,” Yang says. “This technology, if one can further increase its production capacity, can have a real impact in areas where water is scarce, such as southern California.”

Last year’s paper drew a great deal of attention, Wang says. “It got a lot of hype, and some criticism,” she says. Now, “all of the questions that were raised from last time were explicitly demonstrated in this paper. We’ve validated those points.”

The new work is reported this week in the journal Nature Communications and includes some significant improvements over the initial concept that was described last year in a paper in Science, says Evelyn Wang, the senior author of both papers. Still much work remains to scale up the process, the researchers say.

Woman Calls Car Crash ‘Blessing in Disguise’ After Incident Ends Up Possibly Saving Her Life

According to this woman, every unfortunate incident has a silver lining – including car crashes.

Aimee Green and her boyfriend had just finished running errands last month when they started driving back to their home in northern California and got in a car accident on the freeway.

Green suffered head trauma from the accident and was taken to the hospital for a CT scan. When the doctors noticed that she had an abnormal mass around her brain, they asked her to undergo an MRI.

The test revealed that Green actually had a finger-sized brain tumor just above her ear.

While the 24-year-old Sacramento State student was shocked by the diagnosis, she says that she is now grateful for the collision that totaled her car.

“February 20th, 2018 will forever be the day that changed my life,” says Green. “Being in the car accident was truly a blessing in a disguise and I couldn’t be more grateful that we caught it early and I can focus on getting back on track to being healthier than ever.”

The determined young woman is set to undergo surgery in the near future to have the tumor removed. In the meantime, you can follow her on social media or donate to the GoFundMe page that her friend created to help pay Green’s medical bills.

Girl Figures Out Perfect Way to Get Dad to Finally Say Yes to Adopting a Puppy

A daughter’s cunning approach towards convincing her parents to let her adopt a puppy has finally paid off.

Brendan Greeley says that the turning point to his 8-year-old daughter’s plea for a puppy came when he sat down to read his morning newspaper and saw a new headline scrawled in pen at the top of the page reading “Can I PLEASE get a puppy!? (A real one).”

Amused by his daughter’s wily ways, Greeley posted a photo of the paper to Twitter.

“Having studied my habits and preferences, my daughter hacked my attention this morning for her political agenda,” wrote the economics journalist.

Greeley and wife were backed even further into the corner when the photo was shared thousands of times across social media. It even got retweeted by J.K. Rowling.

The dad says that while he has not been especially eager to adopt a puppy into their family of four kids, he was impressed by his daughter’s determination over the course of her 3-month campaign for a furry companion.

“She really did do behavior analysis,” Greeley told TODAY. “She watched my habits on how I would sit down in the morning and read the newspaper. And she figured out how to get my attention.”

Finally after much deliberation, the Greeley family adopted a puppy named J.K. Growling. Not only that, but as a means of using their sudden social media fame for good, the Greeley father says that for every donation that is made to the SPCA of Ann Arundel County (or any other rescue organization), he will post a cute picture of Growling to Twitter.

Other benefits of Growling’s adoption into the family include an ad agency offering a job to the Greeley daughter, to which her father said: “As soon as we get her to remember to make her bed every morning, we’ll send her your way.”

College Students Rush into Burning Building to Save 90-Year-old Man

It was an ordinary Friday night for six college students at Rutgers University-Camden. After spending the evening playing video games and socializing, two of the students got ready to head home around midnight.

As they were leaving the house, however, they saw that a duplex down the street had caught fire – and no one was running out of the building.

The two students, Tammy Meneses and Vanessa Solis-Palma, alerted their other friends to the situation before they all ran down the block and started banging on doors, rattling the fences, and yelling that there was a fire.

Solis-Palma dialed 911 while her friend Corey Zytko alerted a nearby campus security officer.

23-year-old Matteo Resanovic took a more hands-on approach my punching through the glass in the building’s front door so he unlock it and charge inside. Resanovic and Solis-Palma then found a 90-year-old man who had been sleeping in his bedroom on the second floor.

The two students guided him downstairs and onto the sidewalk. While firefighters arrived and managed to control the fire in under 30 minutes, the students immediately left the scene.

Deputy’s Act of Kindness Leads Homeless Man to Family He Never Knew He Had –WATCH

It’s been three months since a sheriff deputy’s act of kindness launched a 67-year-old homeless man into international headlines. Thanks to a chain of events that followed, the man who thought he was “alone in the world” recently was introduced to the family he never knew he had.

Michael Myers had been panhandling on the roadside back in November when Deputy Jacob Swalwell spotted him from his cruiser and pulled over to remind the homeless man that standing alongside a highway was illegal.

Instead of issuing a citation, however, Swalwell struck up a conversation with the man.

“When Swalwell asked Michael for his identification, he said he did not have one. This is often an excuse we hear from people who have warrants or are lying about their name,” said the police department on Facebook. “[But] when people are truthful and sincere, we often take notice. That’s what Swalwell felt when he began to talk to Michael.”

LOOKCouple is Shocked to See Themselves in the Same Tourist Photo From Years Before They Met

In order to get approved for a Californian identification card, Myers had to show two government-issued forms of identification or proof of residency. His lack of any documentation had been a big reason why Myers had never been able to get a job or bank account, or government assistance.

The officer spent the next month jumping through bureaucratic hoops to acquire an ID for his new acquaintance. When he finally succeeded in tracking down the 67-year-old’s birth certificate and getting the necessary documents for a state ID, Myers’s story was picked up by dozens of news outlets.

More importantly, a private investigator named Mark Askins heard about the homeless man’s story and felt spurred to help.

Askins volunteers for Miracle Messages – an organization that reunites homeless people with their long lost families.

The detective learned that Myers had grown up adopted, and had always felt excluded from the family because his adoptive mother so favored his biological siblings. Eventually, his siblings disowned him, and after their parents and some childhood friends passed away, he became resigned to live a life of loneliness and solitude.

Lung Cancer Patient Given a Year to Live is in Remission Thanks to Cuban Vaccine

Back in 2016, Judy Bryden was suffering from a persistent cold. Upon going to the doctor’s office and getting some X-rays, however, she was devastated to learn that she had lung cancer.

The woman from Regina, Saskatchewan endured chemotherapy and five rounds of chemotherapy, but to no avail. The treatments failed to stop the progression of her cancer and her doctors gave her one year to live.

But Bryden was determined to fight back.

“When they told me I had a year to live, I said I was going to prove them wrong,” Bryden told CTV Regina in a video. “I didn’t know how, but I was going to prove them wrong.”

One year and several vaccinations later, Bryden’s cancer is now in remission.

The vaccine, which costs between $3,600–$6,000 for a year’s supply, is currently not available in Canada because the company responsible for the treatment has not submitted an application for approval in the North American country.

But despite having to pay costs of the treatment and overseas flight to Havana, Bryden says that the vaccine and all of its expenses have been “well worth it”.

Adorable Little Boy Can’t Contain Emotions When Mom Walks Down the Aisle

Weddings are usually emotional affairs, but this little boy’s reaction to his mom walking down the aisle is melting everyone’s hearts.

When 6-year-old Bryson Suber’s parents, Tearra and Bryant, were getting married back in September 2016, the youngster couldn’t help but break down in tears.

Photographer Paul Woo says that he noticed Bryson’s emotion as his mom was walking down the aisle and he could not resist snapping a photo.

“I was solo shooting this wedding and this moment was difficult because I was secretly bawling behind the camera and had to prioritize this moment over the bride coming down the aisle,” Woo told Metro. “Yes, I got both photos, but I knew this moment was THE moment.”

The photo is so touching, it has already been shared across the internet thousands of times this week.

Woo says that the photo series is only now garnering so much popularity because he recently entered it into a photography contest.

Judging by the internet’s reaction to the photos, we think that Woo has a pretty ‘good shot’ at winning.

Gas Station Clerk Finds Lost $1 Million Lottery Ticket – But Doesn’t Keep it

Not many people would give up the opportunity to win the $1 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot – but a gas station clerk in Salina, Kansas did just that.

When an unnamed cashier found a lottery ticket on the floor of the gas station, he checked to see if the slip had the owner’s name written on it.

He was flabbergasted to see that the ticket contained the winning numbers worth $1 million. The drama further intensified when they saw the ticket was unsigned, meaning that anyone could claim it as their own.

Instead of claiming the ticket for himself, the clerk called the store listed on the slip to see if they could find the original buyer.

Scientists Believe They Found a Way to Stop Future Hurricanes in Their Tracks

Pexels

There have been at least a dozen devastating hurricanes that have wreaked havoc in the last decade – but there may be hope on the horizon for a solution.

These Norwegian scientists believe that they may be able to use existing technologies to stop hurricanes in their tracks.

Hurricanes are only able to form when the temperature of the ocean’s surface reaches 26.5° Celsius (79.7º Fahrenheit). If humans could cool off the temperature of the sea whenever a hurricane was brewing, they could theoretically stop the storm from forming.

“Climate change is causing sea surface temperatures to increase”, says Grim Eidnes, the senior research scientist at SINTEF Ocean. “The critical temperature threshold at which evaporation is sufficient to promote the development of hurricanes is 26.5°C. In the case of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in the period August to September 2017, sea surface temperatures were measured at 32°C.”

RELATEDStudent Wins $250,000 for Using Math to Solve a Potato Problem–and it Could Save Farmers Billions

While there have been a few creative ideas on how to cool down ocean temperatures – such as towing Arctic glaciers into tropical waters – the researchers at SINTEF want to use technology native to their home country.

SINTEF, which is the largest independent research organization in Scandinavia, published an article this week about how we could use “bubble curtains” to prevent storms from forming.

A bubble curtain is a flurry of air bubbles that are released from pipes planted in the ocean. If planted in tropical waters, the bubbles would be released in deeper waters so that by the time they reached the surface, they would be cold enough to sufficiently lower the temperature of the shallower waters.

MOREScientists Have Found an ‘Off Switch’ For Celiac’s Disease

“Our initial investigations show that the pipes must be located at between 100 and 150 meters depth in order to extract water that is cold enough” says Eidnes. “By bringing this water to the surface using the bubble curtains, the surface temperature will fall to below 26.5°C, thus cutting off the hurricane’s energy supply.”

“This method will allow us quite simply to prevent hurricanes from achieving life-threatening intensities,” he added.

For years, Norway has been using bubble curtains to prevent ice from forming in their fjords – and SINTEF researchers believe that bubble curtains will work the exact same way for hurricanes.

CHECK OUT: Alzheimer’s Disease is Completely Reversed by Removing Just One Enzyme, Says New Study

“During Norwegian winters, sea surface water is colder than at depth, so by lifting warmer water to the surface using bubble curtains, we can prevent the fjords from icing up”, he says.

Last spring, the bubble curtain project was granted funding from Innovation Norway in order to carry out preliminary studies. The researchers now hope that if the studies prove successful, they can be successfully implemented in high-risk areas of the ocean.

Stranger Becomes Honorary Grandma After She Opens Home to Stranded Father in Distress

This man was ready to return to his home in Cleveland with his newborn daughter in hand – but unexpected circumstances left the two stranded in Phoenix, Arizona.

Thankfully, there was a kind stranger who was ready to help.

Rubin Swift had first flown from Ohio to Arizona so he could pick up Ru-Andria, his 4-day-old daughter of who he had just received custody.

In preparation for the journey home, Swift called Frontier airlines to see if his daughter would be allowed on the plane. The representative said that he just needed to bring her birth certificate and a doctor’s note from Banner University Medical Center stating that she was cleared to fly.

WATCHWoman Surprised to Find Her Dog Comforting a Grieving Stranger in the Airport

When the proud new father arrived at the airport, however, the airline would not allow him on the flight because infants had to be at least 7 days old.

Swift did not have any money left to spend on a hotel for two days, and the airline said that a refund for the tickets would take several days to process. So with nowhere else to turn, he called Joy Ringhofer for help.

Ringhofer is a volunteer for the hospital’s NICU. As fate would have it, she had been taking care of Ru-Andria when Swift showed up and the two instantly “made a connection”.

When Swift called her from the airport and explained his situation, Ringhofer invited the father-daughter dup to stay at her home.

“She opened up her door and it never was an issue,” Swift told KPHO. “My color was never an issue. She loves my baby. She held her. My baby was with her all night. Who does that?”

“I had such a strong feeling that I needed to do this for him. I know he was a kind and safe man to have in my home and he has been a perfect gentleman,” says Ringhofer.

Strangers Rally Around 13-Year-old Whose Rock Museum Was Robbed

Judah Tyreman prides himself on his rock and mineral museum.

The teen has spent the last two years mowing lawns, selling jewelry, and performing other odd jobs so he could run the Sesula Mineral and Gem Museum in Radisson. All of the money that Judah earned, he would use to buy more specimens, pay rent for the building, and keep the museum open to the public.

So you can understand how upset the 13-year-old was when he arrived at the museum last Sunday and found that someone had robbed the place.

Though many of Judah’s most valuable pieces were kept safe in the back, the thief had taken the museum’s donation jar, a piece of rare ocean jasper worth about $3,000, and several other treasured minerals.
