Basketball Team Has Only 1 Cheerleader So Opposing Squad Learns Her Routine and Joins Her

There may have been a basketball tournament going on in Carroll County, Missouri earlier this week, but the actions of a group of cheerleaders stole the show.

The footage in the video from the CLAA conference’s basketball tournament was sent to WDAF Kansas City by a mom named Brenda Milligan, whose daughter is a cheerleader for Hardin-Central High School.

Milligan’s daughter was part of a group of cheerleaders who noticed that the opposing team, Northwestern, only had a single cheerleader on their side.

“She was embarrassed and scared, just like any of us would be if we had to cheer in front of a big crowd all alone,” Brenda told WDAF.

But the cheerleader wouldn’t be alone for much longer.

“My daughter and her squad took the nerve and went out to cheer with her,” Brenda said. “They learned her cheers and were able to present them to the crowd in a short amount of time. Many people were there supporting the girls in this great achievement.”

The lone cheerleader from Northwestern, Tori Adams, said that she had been performing alone because many of her teammates were sick. The game had also been rescheduled, which conflicted with other members’ prior commitments.

Nonetheless, she was thankful the opposing squad joined her.

“They learned some of my cheers and I learned some of their cheers,” Tori said. “It was a big relief.”

Women Encircle a Crying Mom Whose Toddler Was Having a Meltdown at the Airport

While airports might typically act as a spark plug for stress, they can also be places where strangers assist during the worst moments of travel anxiety.

One such incident happened to Beth Bornstein Dunnington when she was flying out of Los Angeles earlier this month.

The mom from Waimea, Hawaii was at LAX waiting to board her flight to Portland. As she was in the departure area alongside a crowd of other travelers waiting for their own flights, she saw a mother who was having some problems with her son.

Dunnington wrote on Facebook: “A toddler who looked to be eighteen or so months old was having a total meltdown, running between the seats, kicking and screaming, then lying on the ground, refusing to board the plane.”

“His young mom, who was clearly pregnant and traveling alone with her son, became completely overwhelmed… she couldn’t pick him up because he was so upset, he kept running away from her, then lying down on the ground, kicking and screaming again.”

“The mother finally sat down on the floor and put her head in her hands, with her kid next to her still having a meltdown, and started crying.”

Dunnington was then heartened by what happened next.

Six or seven women from around the boarding area convened on the young mother, formed a little circle around her and her toddler, and each woman did something to help calm down the distressed duo.

“I sang ‘The Itsy Bitsy Spider’ to the little boy… one woman had an orange that she peeled; one woman had a little toy in her bag that she let the toddler play with; another woman gave the mom a bottle of water.

“Someone else helped the mom get the kid’s sippy cup out of her bag and give it to him.”

LOOKThrilled Toddler Yells ‘Dad!’ After Adoption Decree is Announced

Though the women did not exchange words over their common goal, they were able to calm down the mother and her toddler until they were successfully able to get on the plane.

“After they went through the door we all went back to our separate seats and didn’t talk about it… we were strangers, gathering to solve something.

“It occurred to me that a circle of women, with a mission, can save the world. I will never forget that moment,” she added.

Actor Luke Wilson Saves Woman in Car Crash By Crawling in Through the Trunk

Luke Wilson, the actor known for such movie roles as The Royal Tenenbaums and 3:10 to Yuma, is being hailed as a hero for his quick response to a car crash earlier this week.

The actor was driving his Toyota SUV through Los Angeles on Tuesday evening when a Ferrari clipped his car and crashed into a woman’s BMW.

According to a witness who spoke with the Press Association, Wilson immediately leapt into action. Once the BMW started smoking, the actor crawled in through the trunk of the car, pulled the 50-year-old female driver out of the wreckage, and carried her to safety on the side of the road. She was later taken to the hospital for treatment.

“I would say [Luke] was heroic in leading the charge on how to get her out,” witness Sean Heirigs told the Press Association. “He didn’t have to do that, he was also one of the injured parties so for him to be there helping me was amazing.”

The other victim of the crash, pro golfer Bill Haas, was a passenger in the Ferrari that caused the incident. Sources say that while Haas did not sustain serious injury, he did withdraw from the golf tournament in which he was scheduled to compete.

Strangers Get New Hearts on the Same Day, Fall in Love After Families Met in Waiting Room

Taylor Givens and Collin Kobelja are a match made in heaven. Soon, they will be tying the knot – and it is all thanks to their faulty hearts.

Because he had been born with an abnormal heart, 22-year-old Kobelja found himself at the INOVO Fairfax Hospital of Virginia back in 2011 awaiting his second heart transplant. Hovering on the brink of death while machines were pumping his blood, Kobelja’s odds did not look good.

Despite the average 4-month waiting time for a heart transplant, however, a donor came through and Kobelja was given a new heart just in the nick of time.

Meanwhile in a hospital room a few doors down from Kobelja, 17-year-old Givens was also awaiting a heart transplant. The teenager, who had been diagnosed with an enlarged heart, was hooked up to the same medical apparatus, desperately hoping for the unexpected to happen.

As fate would have it, it did.

Just before Givens’s heart was due to give out, a donor came through and the teenager underwent a successful transplant on the very same day as Kobelja.

Though the two transplant patients never met, their families would often chat with each other while they were visiting their respective offspring. Upon hearing that there was a fellow young transplant patient staying down the hall, Givens wanted to meet with him and talk about the experience. Kobelja, on the other hand, was too emotionally drained from the stress to feel much like making friends.

But thanks to the friendship that was struck up between their parents, Givens and Kobelja connected on social media.

Once the they had recovered, Kobelja moved to California and Givens lived in Virginia. They staid in touch, but still did not get the chance to meet until 2016. Givens was recovering from having her tonsils removed at the INOVO hospital while Kobelja was visiting the facilities to chat with his old transplant team. Givens asked the young man to stop by her room and say hi.

The two hit it off immediately.

“Collin left the room and my mom was like, ‘He was flirting with you,’” Givens told TODAY. “We have been emotionally inseparable since.”

Despite having to overcome several obstacles – such as briefly dating long-distance and Givens undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma that was caused by her transplant – she and Kobelja are planning on getting married soon.

And Givens says that it is all thanks to their array of health issues.

“All of the things that fell into place for us to be together are wild. Everything has happened exactly as it needed to happen,” said the 24-year-old.

Kobelja, now 30 years old, says: “We have been very lucky together. It all lined up.”

Single Dad Walked 11 Miles to Work Every Day—Until His Co-Workers Found Out

For the last 7 months, Trenton Lewis had been diligently waking up in the pre-dawn morning so he could make the 5.5-mile hike to work in time for his 4AM shift. Then, after a long day’s work, he would walk the same distance all the way back home again.

Despite the 21-year-old father never telling any of his co-workers at the UPS facility in Little Rock, Arkansas, the workforce eventually found out about his exhausting commute.

But instead of allowing the dedicated dad to continue hiking to and from work every day, they all pitched in enough money to buy him a new car.

According to WTVR, Lewis’s coworker Kenneth Bryant said: “Everybody who I talked to said yes! The hardest part was reminding them to bring cash.

“I told the seller what I was doing and who it was for and he said he was willing to work with me on a price,” he added.

Bryant was eventually able to buy a 2006 Saturn Ion for a mere $2,000. The workforce then lured Lewis to the parking lot for a brief “union meeting” last week.

When Lewis joined all of his co-workers in the lot, however, they handed him the keys to the Saturn.

Though Lewis is reportedly described as “stoic”, he could not contain his emotions over the gift.

“For a young person to decide in their mind ‘if I don’t have a ride, if I can’t get a ride then I’ll walk,’” said Bryant, “if a guy can do that, we can pitch in to help.”

Furthermore, Lewis says that the first thing he did in his new car was pick up his 14-month-old daughter so they could get a bite to eat.

Why Germany is Making it Free to Ride Buses and Trains in 5 Cities

subway platform reading-moriza-Flickr-CC

In a bid to banish air pollution generated by automobiles, German ministers have announced that they will be testing free public transport in five different cities.

In a letter written to the Environmental Commissioner of the EU, German legislators wrote: “We are considering public transport free of charge in order to reduce the number of private cars.”

“Effectively fighting air pollution without any further unnecessary delays is of the highest priority for Germany,” they added, according to AFP.

The initiative will be launching by the end of the year “at the latest” in cities such as Bonn, Essen, and Mannheim. Should the scheme prove successful, Germany will expand the initiative and start refining public infrastructure to support the increased transit capacity.

LOOKTrees Growing Out of Buildings Could Help Heal China’s Air Pollution Problem

In addition to the free public transport, German legislators are planning on tightening emission restrictions for cabs and buses; implementing more tax breaks for low-emission vehicles; and encouraging carpool schemes.

All of these tactics will hopefully help the nation achieve the environmental goals set by the Paris Agreement.

Why You Should Define Your Fears Instead of Your Goals

The Lesson: Tim Ferriss has suffered from frequent bouts of deep depression over the course of his life – but now, he has a recipe for avoiding self-paralysis and emotional free fall (and it’s the same tool that helps him make his best business decisions, too… it’s stoicism.)

Notable Excerpt: “Think of stoicism as an operating system for thriving in high stress environments, for making better decisions … I created an exercise called ‘fear-setting’, like goal-setting. And I can trace all of my biggest wins and all of my biggest disasters averted to doing fear-setting … You’ll find some of your fears are very well founded, but you shouldn’t conclude that without putting them under a microscope. What we most fear doing, asking, saying—these are very often exactly what we most need to do.”

The Speaker: Over the course of his career, Ferriss has become a one-time national Chinese kickboxing champion, a lecturer at Princeton University, a professional breakdancer on MTV, a horseback archer, and a multimillionaire author, motivational speaker, and investor. If that isn’t impressive enough, his critically-acclaimed podcast, the Tim Ferriss Show, was also voted #1 in its category on iTunes.

Neighbors Reunite Couple With Engagement Ring Accidentally Flushed Down the Toilet

It may have taken 48 hours of frantically searching through mud and sewage water, but it finally paid off: an anxious couple was reunited with the engagement ring that they had flushed down the toilet.

Haleigh Morrissey had been applying sun tan lotion to her skin last Saturday when she became worried about accidentally staining the diamond ring with the beauty product. She then called her fiancé Dean Booras into the bathroom so he could remove the ring from her finger.

Booras took the ring off her finger and wrapped it in toilet paper so he could wipe off the lotion.

A while later, Morrissey returned to the bathroom and saw the wad of toilet paper sitting on the counter. Thinking that it was just a piece of trash, she grabbed the tissue and casually threw it into the toilet.

She then realized what she had done.

Desperate to retrieve the precious piece of jewelry before it reached the sewage main and became lost forever, Booras and Morrissey recruited the help of their neighbor Ken Gunari and his sons.

The group started out the expedition by shoving a camera into one of the pipes to see if they could see the ring. Though they did not see see the jewelry, the video showed that there was a group of plant roots that had grown into the pipes. The Gunaris reasoned that if the ring had gotten lodged in the plumbing, it had most likely gotten stuck on the roots.

The crew then cut a hole in the pipe and inserted a mesh filter with the hopes that it would trap the ring before it got washed away.

Finally, Luke Gunari saw the ring trapped in the filter, pulled it out of the water, and presented it to Booras and Morrissey.

“I’m … looking down at it and I see some shiny thing in there,” said Luke, according to KTVU. “They didn’t know I had it in my hand… just walked up slowly with my hand open… and they look down at it and they just started screaming.”

Woman Needed to Thank Two Strangers Who Talked on a Train – Her Note is Shared by Thousands

Hannah Thornton is used to being around seniors suffering from loneliness – so when she overheard two strangers befriend each other on the train, she could not contain her happiness.

Thornton volunteers for a charity in Sheffield called Age Better; a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging friendships amongst the elderly in order to reduce social isolation during their golden years.

While she was riding a train to Liverpool at the start of February, she heard two older men strike up a conversation a few seats away.

“This time last week, I got the train to my Grandma’s and shared part of my journey with 2 lovely men,” wrote Thornton. “They’d never met before but instantly hit it off and laughed like they’d been best friends for years.”

Touched by the sweet exchange, Thornton scribbled a quick note to the duo, commending them for their neighborly attitudes.

“I didn’t want to interrupt your conversation but I wanted to let you know how heartening it’s been listening to you chatting on the train this morning,” wrote Thornton.

She went on to explain how she volunteered with Age Better and how they strived to make people feel less alone.

“We encourage people all the time to be neighborly and to share a smile or a nice word with another person, so it’s been lovely to hear you both doing an abundance of that!”

She finished the note by saying that they “both seemed very young at heart” and Age Better was always looking for volunteers if they were interested in sharing their charms with others.

Later that week, she got an emailed response from one of men who was named Bill.

“Thank you for the note you gave me as you left the train yesterday,” he wrote. “You made 2 old men very happy – although I don’t consider myself as old. 63 is the new 40!!!!”

He went on to say that he and the other man, an 80-year-old gentleman named Morris, had been delighted to chat with each other on the train ride. In addition to explaining where he and Morris had been headed, Bill commended Thornton for her charity work and said that he would be interested in working for the organization in the future. Also, he was more than delighted to be a neighborly example for his community.

“[Morris] was a really engaging and lovely person to talk to,” said Bill. “I didn’t manage to open my paper or look at my iPad once. I wish every trip was like that.”

Thornton took photos of both of the letters – from her and Bill – and posted them to Twitter where they have since gone viral.

They have already been shared over 40,000 times, and the young volunteer says that she is glad that they can now inspire others to be more friendly.

Gorilla Hugging Man Who Saved Her Life: The Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award

This photo of a man and a gorilla sharing a sweet embrace has earned Jo-Anne McArthur the coveted title of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award.

Pikin the gorilla had originally been captured by poachers with the intent of using her for bushmeat. Thankfully, the Ape Action Africa charity rescued her and brought her to an animal sanctuary in Cameroon.

In the photo, Pikin was being transferred to a new sanctuary when the sedatives wore off and she woke up.

While some animals might have exhibited discomfort towards finding themselves in a moving car, she woke up in the arms of her caretaker Appolinaire Ndohoudou.

Ndohoudou shares a bond with Pikin; not just because he helped rescue her from the poachers, but also because he too was forced out of his home in Chad because of a civil war.

Upon rebuilding his life in Cameroon, he found a passion for helping displaced wildlife – just like Pikin.

The competition, which was held by the Natural History Museum, received over 50,000 entries. Now that McArthur’s photo has been chosen as the winner from a shortlist of 24 photographs, “Pikin and Appolinaire” will hang in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Museum until it closes in late May.

“I’m so thankful that this image resonated with people and I hope it might inspire us all to care a little bit more about animals,” said McArthur.

“No act of compassion towards them is ever too small. I regularly document the cruelties animals endure at our hands, but sometimes I bear witness to stories of rescue, hope and redemption. Such is the case with the story of Pikin and Appolinaire, a beautiful moment between friends.”

Seattle to Vacate and Dismiss Old Marijuana Charges Following California’s Lead

The mayor of Seattle has just announced that city officials are starting work on legislation that would vacate or dismiss charges for misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Mayor Durkan wrote in an editorial: “People’s lives were ruined for misdemeanor marijuana offenses. Too many here in our community faced huge legal bills and fines, or had a harder time getting loans, apartments, and good-paying jobs.”

Vacating and dismissing the charges in Seattle will mean that thousands of city residents will be able to get a fresh start since marijuana possession was legalized in 2012.

The announcement is a welcomed follow-up to California’s recent efforts to wipe the slate clean for over one million residents convicted of similar possession charges after the state legalized recreational marijuana use on January 1st.

RELATEDCool Tiny House Village Opens With Electricity to Care for Seattle Homeless

“Our action will affect people who had been convicted of offenses for conduct that is now legal under state law. People won’t have to take any actions like hiring a lawyer or going to a court hearing,” says Mayor Durkan.

“I hope these actions we’re taking here in Seattle can lay the foundation for other cities, counties and state to act, too.”

“Addressing the wrongs that were caused by the failures of the war on drugs for many years in this country – and particularly the damage wrought on communities of color – won’t happen overnight,” says Durkan. “But today, this action is a necessary first step in righting the wrongs of the past and putting our progressive values into action.”

Man Was Dead For 28 Minutes Before a Homeless Man Helped Save His Life

Six months ago, George Dakin Jr. had been walking down the sidewalk when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest and fell to the ground. His heart stopped before he even hit the pavement, and for 28 minutes, Dakin was dead.

The 64-year-old architect is now only alive to tell the tale thanks to a homeless man who had been drinking coffee near to the spot where he collapsed.

Dakin was fortunate enough to collapse in front of CHAMP Homes Inc. – a faith-based shelter for homeless people in transitional housing based in Hyannis, Massachusetts. 54-year-old Austin Davis was inside the building when he heart someone outside scream for help.

Davis, who had only just been given CPR training at CHAMP a few days previously, ran over to Dakin’s motionless body and started giving chest compressions. Davis was conducting CPR for ten minutes before paramedics arrived and loaded Dakin into the ambulance.

RELATEDAfter Denver Hired Homeless People to Perform Day Labor For the City, More Than 100 Landed Regular Jobs

Dakin had suffered 100% blockage in his LAD artery. This condition has been called “the widowmaker” because it is almost always fatal. Only after 18 more minutes of CPR and defibrillator shocks were paramedics able to get a pulse out of Dakin.

“No one could believe it,” Dakin told Patch. “The ambulance folks didn’t believe it. The doctors didn’t believe it. They said if you’re in the hospital and you have an LAD blockage in the hospital you won’t survive it — even if you’re in the hospital!”

As a means of thanking Davis for helping to save their father from certain death, Dakin’s kids created a GoFundMe page to raise money for the homeless man.

Jodi Dakin Loughlin said: “Austin is not a drinker. He does not do drugs. He is always very well put together. He has a lovely personality and I know he can rise above this situation with our help.”

“He is doing EVERYTHING right to escape his circumstantial homelessness– but the hurdle is TREMENDOUS. Odds of escaping homelessness are about as bleak as walking away from a heart attack,” she added.

The family has since been able to raise $15,000, which is being spent on a 2012 Toyota Corolla; the security deposit and rent for an apartment; health insurance; and gas cards – all of which will help get Davis out of transitional housing.

Since the Dakins have started their efforts, Davis’s place of work – a hotel in Hyannis – has also promoted the homeless man from his former part-time position to a full-time position. Jodi says that this will be especially beneficial in keeping Davis on his feet.

“[The General Manager] assured me that Austin is well worth this investment for the hotel, and he is an employee with great pride in his work and a wonderful personality,” says Jodi.

Jodi has also expressed endless gratitude towards the multiple donors and community members who have helped her repay Davis for his kindness.

“I am in awe of the generosity of our friends, family, and total strangers who have banded together to help Austin Davis rise out of homelessness,” says Jodi. “This is unbelievable. Thank you all so much.”
