3 Nutrition Tips for Night Owls

The Lesson: If you’re a dyed-in-the-wool night owl, changing your daily rhythm may not be possible. But borrowing a couple of habits from the early birds could help you stay healthier – whether it’s looking after your serotonin levels, or helping your evening diet by taking care of your nutrition earlier in the day.

Notable Excerpt: “Unfortunately for the night owls, our society seems to have been scheduled by the early birds. Standard school and business hours generally start just a few hours after sun up—and several hours before your typical night owl wants to be up and about. As a result, night owls tend to get less sleep than early birds, and suffer from all of the health risks that go along with that.”

The SpeakerMonica Reinagel, MS, LD/N, CNS also known as The Nutrition Diva, is an expert on making healthy living as simple to understand as possible. The Baltimore-based nutritionist is the host of the fabulous fitness-centered podcast The Nutrition Diva’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Eating Well and Feeling Fabulous. Because His AirBnb Guest Had a Heart Attack, Man’s Ingenuity is Now Saving Thousands of Lives

The world is now your oyster – or, if you need it to be, your dialysis machine. And it’s all thanks to a writer who had a near death experience at a man’s AirBnb.

The famous Argentinian penman Hernan Casciari was staying at the home of Javier Artigas through AirBnb in Montevideo, Uruguay when he had a sudden heart attack. Artigas and his wife Alejandra, who worked for the Uruguayan parliament, arranged for a police escort to take Casciari to the hospital. The couple even donated blood to help with their guest’s treatment.

Once Casciari was released from the hospital and sent home to Argentina,  he left Javier and his wife a sparkling 5-star review on AirBnB, reading:

“Excellent house for sedentary travelers prone to myocardial infarctions. The area is beautiful and has direct access to the best hospitals. Javier and Alejandra instantly become guardian angels who will save your life without even knowing you. They will rush you to the hospital in their own car while you’re dying and stay in the waiting room while doctors give you a bypass. They don’t want you to feel lonely, they bring you books to read and they let you stay in their house extra nights without charging you. Highly recommend.”

RELATEDFather Follows Intuition, Hires Helicopter and Finds Injured Son in Crash

Artigas is no stranger to suffering from medical emergencies while traveling abroad either. He was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2007, and for years, he would have to undergo multiple dialysis appointments per week in order to stave off death.

That’s why he created Connectus: an innovative app that connects travelers with kidney disease to hospitals near to their vacation spots.

The app was the birthchild of a harrowing trip that Javier once took to Argentina, where no hospital was able to give him dialysis due to his lack of residency. After twelve long hours, a hospital finally agreed to give Javier dialysis and save his life.

MORECoffee and a Muffin at Restaurant Drive-thru Saves a Stranger’s Life

On his 2,000-kilometer flight home, Javier came up with the idea for Connectus; so the stress the he endured on the trip would never happen to anyone else.

Casciari’s review, along with news of Artigas’s app, was eventually forwarded to AirBnB’s cofounder Joe Gebbia. Gebbia flew down to Montevideo in 2016 so he could stay with Artigas and ask him all about Casciari’s heart attack, Artigas’s medical experiences, and the app. After listening to Artigas’s stories, Gebbia offered to go into business with him.

Now with the added financial might of AirBnb, Connectus (newly-dubbed ConnectusMedical) has grown to serve over 250,000 people.

The good news doesn’t stop there, either – according to the BBC, Artigas received a kidney transplant in August 2017 and he no longer needs dialysis.

China is Reassigning 60,000 Troops to Plant Trees

Over 60,000 Chinese soldiers and military personnel are being re-tasked with a surprising new initiative: planting trees.

According to Asia Times, the country’s Central Military Commission announced that it would be moving regiments of the People’s Liberation Army and some of armed police officers inland from their posts along the northern border so they can be reassigned to non-military tasks – such as planting trees.

In order to further pursue their goals of reforesting the country, China plans on planting at least 84,000 square kilometers (32,400 square miles) of trees during 2018. That’s roughly the size of Ireland.

LOOKIndia Plants Record-breaking 66 Million Trees in 12 Hours

This will hopefully restore the country’s forested regions to about 23% of their land mass – 2% more than the current amount.

Asia Times goes on to say that members of online military forums have explained that – since they are still able to keep their current ranks – the troops are excited to relocate inland away from the icy northern temperatures.

Watch Drake Surprise College Student With $50K Tuition After He Reads Her Essay

Earlier this week, Drake – the adored international hip hop star – became a legend to hundreds of Florida high school and college students… especially for Destiny James.

James is a first-generation junior college student from a low-income family who is studying biology at the University of Miami, according to The Miami Hurricane. When James was applying for scholarships last year, she wrote an essay about her life and the tribulations that she has had to overcome in order to succeed.

Little did she know that her essay had made it into the hands of Drake.

Drake visited the University of Miami on Monday to shoot a music video for his new single “God’s Plan”. Hundreds of students crowded onto the campus to get a glimpse of the superstar. Some even went so far as to climb onto the roof of the food court for a good view.

In addition to partying it up with the students, Drake also wanted to reward James for her essay and surprise her with a massive $50,000 tuition check.

“Apparently, my essay and my story made it to other departments,” says James. “I was contacted this weekend about doing a video speaking about where I come from, things I’ve been through and why it is so important for scholarship donors to continue to donate – [but] this was the surprise the whole time.”

“Drake told me that he has read great things about me and appreciates how hard I’ve worked through so many trials and decided to give me $50K for my tuition.”

“You don’t understand what this means to me! I would’ve never imagined this happening to me. I’m just a girl from Denmark, South Carolina that wants to MAKE IT and be somebody and for [Drake] to see my hard work means the world.

WATCHKeanu Reeves Has Been a Secret Charity Badass for Years

In addition to surprising James with the check, the Canadian rapper also stopped by the Miami Senior High School to shoot some more of the video with the younger students and donate $25,000 to the institution.

Drake also announced that every student at the school would be receiving a uniform made exclusively by OVO, his clothing line.

Thrilled Toddler Yells ‘Dad!’ After Adoption Decree is Announced

Mandi and Tyler Palmer have spent the last sixteen months maneuvering the mountains of paperwork and bureaucratic red tape so that they could finally bring young Hunter into their family. Finally, on December 17th, the toddler became their legal son – and they were all thrilled.

In a blog submission to Love What Matters, Mandi explains how she has been struggling with Crohn’s disease since she was 15 years old. The Perrysburg, Ohio resident has undergone dozens of surgeries to manage the disease, several of which left her without a normally functioning stomach.

The 32-year-old still suffers from malnutrition and continues to endure different surgeries and infusions to keep her condition in check.

Tyler, on the other hand, suffers from PTSD after undergoing two tours in Afghanistan. He currently attends regular therapy sessions at the VA Medical Center.

After the loving couple got married and moved to Ohio, they decided it was time to start a family – but they ran into a few problems.

Mandi told Love What Matters: “We tried for years to get pregnant but soon came to realize that it wasn’t going to happen, nor would it be safe for my body to sustain the miracle of pregnancy due to my illness. We were heartbroken and quickly found ourselves seeking other ways to grow our family and become parents.”

“Because of the health battles we’ve been given, we weren’t the type of people to just ‘throw in the towel’ and let our dreams of becoming parents get shattered,” she added.

Tyler and Mandi then became foster parents so they could try adoption. A week after becoming certified, they got a call about a newborn baby who needed some loving parents to take care of him.

“We arrived at children’s services and there was Hunter, all bundled up in a receiving blanket, and he was being held by our caseworker,” said Mandi. “He was 8 days old and absolutely perfect. We fell in love with him instantly.”

“It became obvious that Hunter was more than just our first baby. He was our ‘medicine’ and both of our reasons to fight the health battles that we have been given. He truly became our ‘why’ in life.”

Then back in December, Mandi and Tyler were able to sign the official adoption papers to make Hunter their son. When the judge announced the boy’s new name, Hunter clapped with joy, turned to Tyler, and yelled “Dad!”

“We’ve learned that there’s a rainbow at the end of every storm and we’re so thankful we kept the fight. He is our world and our reason to keep fighting these battles. My husband said that there is no medication to help his PTSD quite like having his son take our last name.”

“We have learned that family isn’t about DNA. It’s about love!”

The Power of ‘Why?’: Learn the Power of the Golden Circle

The Lesson: Simon Sinek presents a simple (but powerful) model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question “Why?” His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, the Wright brothers, and – as a counterpoint – Tivo.

Notable Excerpt: “Very few people or organizations know why they do what they do. And by why, I don’t mean to make a profit. That’s always a result. By why, I mean what’s your purpose? What’s your cause? What’s your belief? Why does your organization exist? Why do you get out of bed in the morning and why should anyone care?”

The Host: Simon Sinek is the marketing consultant, bestselling author, motivational speaker, and critically-acclaimed mastermind behind Start With Why: an organization made up of other business moguls dedicated to helping others find their passion and leadership stride. ‘Back from the dead’: Dog Returns Home 10 Years After Going Missing

Ever since Abby the black Labrador mix had wandered away from their home ten years ago, Debra Suierveld thought that the beloved pup had passed away – until, one decade later, she rejoined the family almost like magic.

Abby had been playing with Suierveld’s kids in the front yard of their Washington Township, Pennsylvania home when she went missing in 2008. When she never returned, the vet who microchipped her had her listed as deceased.

Then last weekend, the hound reappeared on a woman’s front porch in Lower Burrell.

When the lady called the police about the mysterious stray dog, they proceeded to call the Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley. The shelter workers checked the dog’s microchip and found that her name was Abby and she belonged to the Suierveld family.

LOOKMan Finds Puppies Abandoned in the Middle of the Desert and Takes Them on Epic Cross Country Road Trip

Upon calling the Suiervelds about the recovery of their long lost companion, Debra was speechless. Her 22-year-old daughter, Carly, broke down into tears when she heard the news.

“I didn’t even know what to say. I was like, ‘Oh my goodness,’” Debra told the Tribune Review. “She kind of came back from the dead.”

Despite now being 13 years old, Abby still responds to her name. She does have slight fat deposits and some graying around her muzzle, but this is pretty typical for elderly dogs. Otherwise, her good health suggests that another family has been taking care of her for the last decade.

Regardless of her history, however, the Suiervelds are simply happy to be reunited with their old friend.

Watch World’s Tallest Man and Shortest Woman Meet For the First Time

While it may sound like a tall tale, it’s actually true; last week, the world’s tallest man met the world’s smallest woman.

Sultan Kösen is a 35-year-old Turkish man who currently holds the Guinness World Record for his height, measuring in at a whopping 8 feet 3 inches.

WATCHThis Four-Foot Cat is the Biggest – and Most Lovable – in New York City

Jyoti Amge is a 24-year-old Indian woman who also holds a Guinness record – but for the opposite. Amge measures in at just 24.7 inches tall, making her the smallest woman in the world.

The two met at the Great Pyramids of Giza last Friday as a way to bolster the faltering tourist industry in Egypt.

The Egyptian Tourism Promotion Board said that Amge and Kösen would be visiting other famous national sites during their stay in the North African country.

Kösen, who is the first person to measure over 8 feet in the last decade, is only one of ten people who have ever been recorded to break 8 feet in history. The gentle giant grew to such heights because of a condition called “pituitary gigantism”, which is caused by an over-production of growth hormones.

Though he wasn’t able to finish school because of his height, the Kurdish man worked as a farmer to support his family before finding success as an actor in several Hollywood films.

Amge’s height, on the other hand, is caused by a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia.

At 18 years old, the teen was declared the smallest woman in 2011. She has since become an actress on the hit television show “American Horror Story”.

Internet Falls in Love With Wholesome Dad Who Hides $20 Whenever He Visits Daughter’s Home

A dad has won over the internet thanks to his daughter posting a series of photos capturing his favorite past time: secretly hiding $20 bills in random places around her house.

Imgur user Somebodysmama says that her sweet father first started hiding the cash after he tried to give it to her as a thank you for making dinner. When she refused, the games began.

Now, every time her dad comes to visit, he delights in stashing away a crisp $20 somewhere in the house for her to find. Then, when she finally stumbles across the gift, she takes a picture of the hiding place and sends it to her dad as a thank you.

The history behind the dedicated dad’s good deed is even more heartwarming, too; Somebodysmama says that he had always worked extremely hard to provide for her and her four siblings when they were younger.

“We never did without, but we were quite poor,” she says. “I remember he tried to buy me some gifts for my high school graduation, but his credit card was declined.

LOOKHilarious Craigslist Ad Seeks ‘Generic Father Figure’ For Backyard BBQ

“He gave me a paper card instead and wrote inside all the things he wished he could buy for me. I cried all over it. Gah. I’m crying again.”

“He now makes double what he used to, and spoils all of us ridiculously,” she added. “His heart is so huge and kind. He’s also a hopeless romantic. The Hallmark Channel is always playing on his television. He’s amazing.”

After posting the photos to Imgur, Somebodysmama received an outpouring of adoring messages from viewers begging to be adopted by her dad.

A few readers also asked why her dad was so fond of the sunglasses emoji.

She wrote: “He said he uses the sunglasses emoji all the time because it reminds him of his best friend and coworker that died two years ago (sudden heart attack while they were at work). I never knew this.”

After being told that his antics had gone viral, the dad responded simply by saying that he wanted the internet to know that he is now a proud great-grandfather three times over who “would adopt all of you as long as you bring food.”

9 Super Bowl Ads That Will Inspire Your Day and Make You Laugh Out Loud

Well over 100 million people tuned in this weekend to watch the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots in a nail biter game on Sunday. Of course, most people looked forward to the commercials, too. These nine beautifully produced ads provided plenty of inspiration and laughs during the time-outs on the athletic field.

1) One of the many Toyota spots that touched our hearts was an ode to the real-life story of Paralympic gold medalist Alpine skier Lauren Woolstencroft. Depicting her growth from a baby to adulthood, she overcame a disability and refused to quit. Set to the song “Stronger Than I’ve Ever Been”, the commercial was tied to the auto maker’s sponsorship of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which kick off this week in South Korea.

2) A Budweiser commercial highlighted how its employees deliver clean water to victims of natural disasters. Since 1988, they have helped provide more than 79 million cans of water to cities across the U.S.

With scenes from its brewery in Cartersville, Georgia playing over the song “Stand By Me”, we see a plant manager switching ingredients and labels for its delivery of just water to communities in need.

3) The Pringles “Wow” commercial features Bill Hader combining chips to make new flavors… Very cute, and inviting everyone to absolutely try this at home.

4) Everyone in the room where I was watching the big game totally lost it when we realized during the closing seconds that this movie trailer was for “Solo: A Star Wars Story”.

5) Matt Damon has been working with the water.org charity for years to bring clean drinking water to the rest of the world. He’s teamed up with beer maker Stella Artois to offer a chalice from Stella that, when purchased, can make a difference for millions. Looking good, Matt.

6) In this fun ad, “The Only Man Whose Bleep Don’t Stink”, Dave is the guy you want at your party munching bean burritos. See why in this ad with the surprise ending.

7) A.B.F.T.T.B. “Always be Faster Than the Boys” is alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin’s motto. The 2018 Winter Olympics kicks off on Feb. 8 and NBC aired five separate 60-second “Best of U.S.” ads highlighting different American athletes headed to the Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. This one, and another about skier Lindsey Vonn were our hands down faves:

8) Though the topic is no laughing matter, this ad had us cracking up over the senior citizens who had to get jobs because they had no retirement savings. E*Trade chose a comedy approach showing what happens when 85-year-olds go back to work —as a DJ, a lifeguard, delivery person, and most hilariously, a fireman.

9) We’re all one team. What happens when a priest, a rabbi, an imam and a monk hop in a truck to hang out together. Toyota has the answer in this sweet video about bridging cultural borders.

5 Ways to Boost Willpower—the Greatest Predictor of Health, Happiness, Love, and Wealth

The Lesson: Known as the queen of virtues, “improving your willpower is the surest way to a better life,” says Roy Baumeister, one of the most cited research psychologists in the world. And, the good news is you can train your brain to get better at self-control. Some of these tips (like staying well fed) are surprising, but their value is based on scientific studies proving effectiveness.

Notable Excerpt: “Glucose depletion is one of the best ways to annihilate your willpower. Well fed + well rested equals a different version of you. Another way to boost your willpower is to tidy up. They’ve done experiments where they show people a messy desk and a messy website, vs a clean desk and website… and the individuals who saw the messy desk and website had diminished willpower. Simply tidying up, being in a clean environment increases your willpower. This is a really cool way to be on the offense.”

Mom Ends Up Marrying Stranger She Thought Was Trying To Kidnap Her Kids During a Blizzard

The blizzard of 1978 dumped over 12 inches of snow on the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes region of the United States. The winds were brutal, and residents of the affected areas were advised to stay indoors.

Shirley Rodgers was one of the few who braved the elements. She had just started a new job and needed to go to work – so she grabbed her two young kids and headed to the bus stop.

She told WJW: “I have never in my life seen that much snow, and also I don’t remember the wind ever blowing that hard in my life.”

They weren’t alone, though. She saw a man in his car, and he was honking his horn at them. Shirley’s first instinct thought that he was trying to kidnap them, and she told her children to run.

She added: “I said, ‘Kenny and Kevin, run! Run!’ So they started running, and I ran with them. And we had on so many layers of clothes that we fell into the snowdrifts.”

The man’s name was Barry Rodgers, and he managed to convince the mother to get into his car with her kids to escape the storm.

“He convinced us to get in the car; he dropped my kids off at the babysitter’s, took me to work, and then, that night, I had no idea how I was gonna get home. And he was sitting out in the parking lot, waiting for me,” she said.

Three years later, that fateful encounter resulted in a wedding.

Heartfelt Letter From 5-Year-old Causes Restaurant Chain to Swap Plastic Straws for Paper

A 5-year-old girl is being hailed for influencing a restaurant chain to ditch single-use plastic straws in favor of biodegradable paper alternatives, all thanks to a heartfelt letter that she sent to the company.

Pizza Express, an Italian food restaurant with over 470 branches worldwide, recently announced their decision to drop the wasteful utensils on their Facebook page.

The company’s statement was posted alongside a photo of a letter from Ava: a young customer who wrote to Pizza Express asking if they could stop giving away straws at their restaurants.

Ava’s letter read: “I am writing to you to ask if you could stop using plastic straws because they are very bad for animals. They can get stuck in their mouths and noses. Could you only use straws if people ask for them because I don’t want any animals to get sick.”

LOOKClever Kids Leave Amusing Bribe on Superintendent’s Doorstep in Hopes of Scoring a Snow Day

A Pizza Express spokesperson responded to the letter, saying:

“We pride ourselves on listening to our customers, so when Ava, aged five, sent us a letter asking us to stop putting plastic straws in her drink because ‘they are very bad for animals’, it spurred us to make a change.

“We are now phasing out single-use plastic straws from all our 470+ restaurants from this summer, and we’ll be replacing them with biodegradable and recyclable paper versions.”

Then, as a means of verifying that the letter was real, the company wrote a follow-up statement reading: “For the record, Ava’s letter is genuine and it’s truly amazing and wonderful that somebody so young wrote to us with such a caring and compassionate message.”

Supportive Friends Come Together With Wine and Wedding Dresses For ‘Divorce Party’

Upon finding out that her divorce was about to be finalized in December, Nicole Niesner was prepared to endure a lonely night in by herself. Her friends, on the other hand, were not about to let that happen.

The 36-year-old resident of Saskatchewan came home from work one day only to be surprised by a bunch of her gal pals showing up at her house with wedding dresses in hand for a “divorce party”.

The friends, who are all still married, donned the gowns as a means of taking some of the sting out of Niesner’s divorce.

Niesner herself dug her own dress out of her basement so the gang could spend the night drinking wine and reminiscing on the ups and downs of their own marriages.

“[We] kept it really positive, drank some wine, ate some food. [The wedding dresses] were on most of the time, everybody was really digging that,” Niesner told Inside Edition. “Even though I am okay with being divorced, it just lifted me up and reminded me that I am loved and that I have lots of great people in my life.”

Don’t Wait For Your Best Friend to Pass: Learn From Henry and Shift to a Life That Fulfills You

My friend Henry and I grew up not far from each other in the same town. He was one of my closest friends.

Our lives seemed to run almost in parallel. Perhaps the only thing we differed on was his almost fanatical approach to fitness. He liked to run 5 miles each morning, and was extremely careful about his diet. I, on the other hand preferred my morning snooze, and was not so discerning about what I ate as long as it tasted good.

Henry was always trying to get me to go for a Sunday morning run with him, and on one such weekend, Henry was outside my door trying to get me to come out. I was in no mood to leave my bed that morning and convinced him to go on ahead, promising to meet him at our usual spot for breakfast in an hour.

That was the last I saw of him. When I went to our breakfast spot later, I found out that Henry had collapsed halfway through his run because of a massive heart attack and was dead before help arrived. A man who for the best part of his life was a fitness fanatic, who was at the prime of his life with a young wife and child, and had so much to look forward to, was suddenly and unexpectedly gone. He was 34.

RELATEDMeditation and Mindfulness Tips to Combat Everyday Worries and Life’s Big Questions

Sometime later, as I emerged from my own grief and sorrow, I thought wistfully of the plans Henry and I had made for our future and how he would now never get around to them — and that’s when the realization hit me: if I didn’t do something with the time I have now, it may be too late. Who is to say how much time I have left?

I was in my early 30s, comfortable with my 9 to 5 job. I had a modest house in the suburbs and a wonderful wife. I was coasting along. I knew there was more to life, and that I could be doing a lot more with my talents and abilities, but I had settled into a comfort zone.

Henry’s passing shook me from my stupor. I felt a sense of urgency begin to rise within me—and pull me out of the quicksand of mediocrity.

I knew then that I should not waste the time I have left. I flipped open the journal in which I had listed all the things I thought were my priorities at the time. As I reviewed that list in the light of my friend’s death, I came to terms with the fact that if I had just a month to live, that list would be meaningless.

MOREThis is How Good You Feel When You Do Good For Others

Things I had originally marked as priority didn’t seem that important anymore. Having a bucket list is great, and its fun to cross off new adventures, but my life was not going to be about just ticking a box anymore. My short term and long term goals shifted. Spending time with my family and ensuring their future happiness became my number one prerogative.

I knew that it was time to start focusing on living my purpose, on creating a legacy, and having a positive impact on the world. I realized I had to make the most of every day and make each day count. The new found sense of urgency pushed me to hit the reset button on my life. I walked away from my job and found the courage to pursue entrepreneurship full-time. I took a leap of faith into uncharted waters and it proved to be the best decision I ever made.

People forget how transient life is. They think they have all the time in the world to go after their dreams and allow themselves to sink into a comfort zone. The comfort zone builds up gradually. You do not just wake up one morning and find yourself right in the midst of it. It is a very slow, velvety, quicksand. It has a cocoon-like effect that lulls you into a sense of false security. The hunger, the anger, and the energy that drives you to take risks, that makes you challenge preconceived notions, that forces you to seek out new horizons constantly, suddenly dissolves into this velvety zone that you are so safely snuggled into. What you do not realize is that this quicksand snuggles you just as it suffocates you.

LOOKEinstein’s Theory of Happy Living Emerges in a Note Uncovered After 95 Years

I was unceremoniously pulled out of the quicksand of my comfort zone by the death of my friend. While that was a rude (and much needed) wake up call in my life, and I have made sure to never fall back into it again, I confess that the comfort zone still creeps up on me every now and then.

If you have been putting off something for later, I am here to remind you that there may not be a ‘later’. All you have is now. It’s never too late to hit the reset button. Begin by taking stock of your life and making a priority list of things that mean the most to you. Map your goals with the legacy you want to leave. Break it down into smaller goals and launch into it immediately. Work towards it every single day.

Your entire being will rebel against it and that’s okay. The truth is that if you place too much attention on those feelings and wait for the perfect time to start, you’ll probably never start. Remember, all you have is now.
