We Tried 5 Pumpkin Preservation Hacks To See Which One Keeps Jack-O’-Lanterns Fresh Longest

It’s always sad to watch your jack-o’-lantern creations grow moldy and start collapsing, but luckily, there is a way to help your carvings last longer thanks to pumpkin preservation hacks.

To find out which hack is the best for the job, we conducted an experiment that tested five different preservation methods. They were hair spray, vinegar, vegetable oil, Vaseline, and bleach.

Each pumpkin was treated with their respective preservative, and then left for a week to let nature take its course.

As the days passed, it became clear that some methods were definitely better than others—and there was one that quite literally left the others in the dust.

WWII Ship Transformed into Giant Artificial Coral Reef – and it’s Magnificent

This decorated WWII ship is thought to be only one of five ships to have survived Pearl Harbor – and it ended up in a junk heap ready to be scrapped for its metal.

That was the plan, until it was salvaged by a team of artists and turned into an artificial coral reef and art gallery.

The collective that rescued the Kodiak Queen ship, originally dubbed the “YO-44”, wanted to keep the vessel as a treasure of our history and transform it into a symbol of life and rebirth. After saving the ship in March 2017, the team cleaned it up, decorated the structure, and prepared it for its new home.

One of the most impressive new features of the vessel is a massive 80-foot sculpture of a kraken, the mythical monster portrayed in Pirates of the Carribean, which wraps around the ship as a means of encouraging marine life.

The team then towed the Kodiak Queen out to an ideal location in the Virgin Gorda seas around the British Virgin Islands and sunk it to the bottom.

Since it was installed in its underwater home, the newly-dubbed “BVI Art Reef” has become a thriving ocean ecosystem and adventure diving location that educates local youth on marine habitats and conservation. For local scientists, it is a valuable spot for underwater research and observation.

As a bonus, local cultures and villages are experiencing an economic boost with the tourist traffic that is drawn to the intriguing dive spot.

Netherlands to Build Roads With Recycled Plastic From the Ocean

A Dutch organization has just announced plans to salvage plastic pollution from the ocean and use it to build highways in Rotterdam.

The solution is quite simple: VolkerWessels, the company leading the project, plans to gather the materials by installing barricades in nearby ocean waters. The plastics will then be transported, processed, and compressed into building blocks for the roads.

Beyond its benefit to the planet, the raw recycled material used for the PlasticRoad project is more durable and easier to manipulate and maintain.

Studies suggest that nearly any type of plastic can be used, and the material is resistant to temperature variation from -40º to 176º Fahrenheit (-40º to 80ºC).

Scientists are already in the final stages of testing the safety of the material – and if plans go according to schedule, the first roads will be built later this year.

Video of Shelter Dogs Paddle-Boarding Helps Find Them Forever Homes

These shelter pups may have seen some tough times in their lives, but rescue volunteers ensured that they were repaid with the best day ever and a proper shot at a forever home.

Four-year-old Captain is a boxer mix being treated for heartworm. He was found roaming a construction site in the desert and had chemical burns on his back. It’s unknown if he rolled in something or if someone abused him. Regardless, he came to Last Chance at Life Animal Rescue in Oceanside, California as a stray and has since been given some much-needed love and medical attention.

Presley was also a stray who arrived at Last Chance at Life in pretty bad shape. The 10-year-old Brussels Griffin came from Riverside with severe skin and ear infections, as well as a large non-cancerous lump on his bottom.

As a means of giving back to the animal rescue organization, Deanne Gustafson of Oceanside set up the best day ever for Captain and Presley.

“They got to try standup paddle-boarding, go on a shopping spree and had a gourmet meal at Smashburger. It was amazing to watch these two dogs have the best day ever!” said Deanne Gustafson.

Volunteers filmed the whole day in hopes that the best day ever would lead to the dogs finding their forever homes – and since filming, Captain was adopted! And while Presley is still looking for the perfect family to cuddle with, he still has plenty of time.

“Presley is the sweetest dog! My hope is that if enough people see Presley’s video he will find a forever family,” said Gustafson

Woman Deceived On the Internet by Older Man Finds Love With Model Whose Photos Lured Her In

Emma Perrier was already heartbroken from a past relationship when she took a chance with online dating. Her hope for romance was renewed when a matchmaking app paired her with a charming and extraordinarily handsome man named Ronnie Scicluna.

The love story took a turn, however, when she found out that Ronnie Scicluna wasn’t real.

After she was dumped by her boyfriend of eight months, Perrier turned to a dating site called Zoosk. Though she had never used a relationship app before, the 31-year-old Frenchwoman hoped that maybe it could help her find “Mr. Right”.

She eventually struck up a conversation with Scicluna: a tall, dark, and handsome 34-year-old electrician who worked in the West Midlands of England – just 100 miles away from where Perrier lives in London.

Perrier told the Atlantic that what started as innocent flirting eventually turned into constant texting and hour-long phone calls. In the months following their initial pairing on Zoosk during the autumn of 2015, Perrier would beg Scicluna for a dinner date. The electrician would always make excuses, saying that he worked too much or that he didn’t have time to travel because of his family.

Scicluna stayed evasive because he was actually a short, balding 53-year-old interior designer named Alan Stanley.

After his 22-year marriage ended in divorce, Stanley had taken up “catfishing” as a hobby – a term used to describe when someone creates a fake social media profile in order to meet and deceive people on the internet, often for romantic reasons. Stanley says that chasing women over the internet made him feel more alive – and he enjoyed the company.

But over the course of their year-long “relationship”, Perrier was dejected by Scicluna’s inability to meet up with her. Since she works as an assistant manager at an Italian restaurant in the city, Perrier confided in her coworkers and expressed her frustration over the romantic dilemma. The employees warned her that Scicluna may not be who she thought he was, saying that he could be an ugly old man – or worse, a murderous psychopath.

Though Perrier didn’t want to believe it, she uploaded Scicluna’s photo to a website that traces pictures back to their original sources on the internet.

She was devastated to discover that Scicluna’s photos belonged to that of a Turkish supermodel named Adam Guzel.

After confronting Scicluna about the alternate identity, he tried to explain that Adam Guzel was simply the name he used during a brief modeling career in his youth. By August 2016, however, the jig was up – Perrier traced some of the other innocuous photos that Scicluna had sent her to a Trip Advisor account under the name Alan Stanley.

Stanley decided to come clean and send an actual photo of himself to Perrier. He called her and explained everything about why he lied to her and who he really was.

Overcome by heartbreak and betrayal, Perrier reached out to Guzel with the intention of warning him about the thief who stole his photos.

According to the Atlantic, she found Guzel on Facebook in September 2016 and wrote: “Hello Adem, we don’t know each other but a year ago I met a guy online and that man is using your picture and pretends he is you under another name. I wasn’t sure if getting in touch with you was a good idea but I needed you to know, kind regards, Emma.”

Guzel, who had been living in Istanbul when he read the message, was furious by how Perrier had been deceived. The supermodel had received warnings of his pictures being used for such nefarious catfishing plots in the past, but for some unexplainable reason, he was intrigued by Perrier’s message.

By the time January rolled around, Guzel and Perrier had started an amiable internet correspondence. After several months of chatting over social media, the Frenchwoman took a chance and invited the Turkish man to London.

On April 1st, 2017, picked up Guzel from Heathrow airport and finally met the man of her dreams in person. Minutes later, they shared their first kiss while they were waiting for an Uber. When Jeff Maysh from the Atlantic interviewed the beautiful couple in September, they had already been living together for six months – and they were intent on living happily ever after.

And they say that it is all thanks to the “catfish turned Cupid”.

Israeli and Palestinian Farmers Find Peace Through Olive Oil

Can Israel and Palestine work together? One group is proving it’s possible.

The Near East Foundation’s project Olive Oil Without Borders works with farmers from Palestine and Israel to improve farming techniques and oil production.

“This project, funded by USAID, aims to promote reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis by strengthening the economic co-operation between the Palestinian farmers and the Israeli farmer, the Palestinian olive traders and the Israeli olive traders, together,” said Salah Abu-Eisheh, Near East Foundation Country Director, Palestine.

Nearly 90 villages in Israel, the West Bank, and now Jordan are involved, including over 2,000 olive producers, 25 mill owners, and 50 ancillary businesses.

“I wanted to get to know [the Israeli farmers] more, because they had expertise to share, that could really benefit me and my work,” said Somaya Sawalmeh, a Palestinian Farmer.

“Israel and Palestine is the same market, so we are talking about trade – for example, from Israel they are buying olive oil from Palestine, from the West Bank, and from the West Bank they are buying olive oil from Israel, so for trade, for marketing, it’s very important,” said Dr. Fathi Abdelhadi, OOWB consultant.

The project even established a cross-border trade agreement that still stands, despite the conflict.

“We found, with our donors, different ways to overcome those obstacles and find solutions, to the level that we were able to reach hundreds – now I can say thousands – of farmers across the borders,” said Mr Abu-Eisheh.

“The people from both sides, they are meeting, they talk – one to the other – so for the peace I think this is one important reason to meet, more and more,” said Abdelhadi.

Teen Boys Filmed Giving Duvet to Homeless Man and Tucking Him In

Millenials may get a bad rap for being the generation introduced to smartphones, but these three Polish teens are a perfect example of how youngsters are just as kind and compassionate as everyone else.

Last December, Szymon, Wojtek, and Marcin were wandering down a street in Nysa – a city in southern Poland – when they stumbled upon a homeless man.

When the youths asked how they could help the stranger, he asked for a blanket to help keep himself warm on the park bench.

The trio then started searching all over town for a blanket until they eventually found someone who was throwing out old furniture. On top of an old couch was a clean duvet and pillow.

Szymon, Wojtek, and Marcin are then caught on CCTV footage walking back to the homeless man, gently covering him with the blanket, and tucking him in on the park bench.

According to TVN24, the boys were invited to the mayor’s office so they could be recognized and rewarded for their good deed after security workers saw the footage.

The Nysa city office also says that the man from the video is no longer homeless.

11-Year-Old Becomes ‘America’s Top Young Scientist’ for Her Sensor Detecting Lead in Water

Gitanjali Rao may be young, but she was just named “America’s Top Young Scientist” for her simple and cost-effective device that can detect lead in water.

The 11-year-old from Lone Tree, Colorado and her device won the $25,000 title from the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge on Tuesday. Rao, who was competing against other young scientists between 11 and 14 years of age, was the youngest participant in the 2017 event.

Other young scientists between who have been awarded the title in the past have gone on to receive grants, patents, and scholarships for their genius.

Rao says that she first became inspired to build her Tethys device – which she named after the Greek god of clean water – after she watched her parents testing their tap water for lead content following the publicity of the Flint water crisis.

The seventh grader learned that there are currently only two methods of testing water for lead – and neither of them are very efficient.

The most convenient household way of testing water for lead is by using test strips, which are often inaccurate or inconsistent. The second is by sending a water sample to the EPA, which is expensive and time-consuming.

Tethys, however, is a small portable contraption that uses nanotubes to quickly test water for lead. The device can then be paired with a mobile app to display the results and readings.

Rao plans on using her prize money to further develop Tethys and make it available in households across the nation.

“Making the world a better place through science starts with a spark of curiosity, which leads to passion – and results in making an impact,” said 3M’s senior vice president Paul Keel. “3M is inspired by these finalists and their contributions to making lives better.”

NFL Player to Donate All His 2017 Game Checks To City Kids

This football player just scored big for the next generation’s academic opportunities.

Chris Long, the Philadelphia Eagle’s defensive end player, just announced that he would be donating the rest of his year’s salary for the rest of the game year to increase educational equality.

According to ESPN, Long has a 2017 base salary of $1 million.

“As you may already know, I have committed my first 6 game checks to fund scholarships in my hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia,” says Long. “Now, I’m pledging my last 10 game checks to organizations supporting educational equity and opportunity in St. Louis, Boston and Philadelphia – the three cities that I’ve called home throughout my NFL career.”

“I’m playing the entire 2017 NFL season without collecting income because I believe that education is the best gateway to a better tomorrow for EVERYONE in America,” he added.

Stray Dog Crashes A Wedding And Finds His Own Happily Ever After

This persistent pup didn’t crash a wedding for the free booze or buffet – he just wanted a dry place to take a nap. But incidentally, he also found his forever home, too.

Marília Pieroni and Matheus Gomes Martins were tying the knot last month in Laranjal Paulista, Brazil when it started to rain on the party and the ceremony was moved into a tent.

While all the guests were seeking shelter from the storm, they were joined by a muddy stray dog who also wanted refuge. Wedding organizers escorted the dog outside only to have him wander back in again later.

Then, when the couple was exchanging their vows, the stray wandered in for the third time and plopped down on top of the bride’s veil for a nap.

“It was a very pleasant surprise for me, because I love animals,” Marília told the Dodo. “I liked it very much.”

The nuptials were so delighted by the dog’s antics, they allowed him to stay for the reception. They even fed him from food from the buffet before he left the party and went back to the streets.

After the wedding, Pieroni and Martins took to social media in hopes of finding the dog once more. A few weeks later, the couple was reunited with the dog and they adopted him into their home.

Irish Mosque Opens Doors to the Homeless Amidst First Hurricane in 50 Years

When was Ireland preparing for its first hurricane in 50 years, this mosque was making sure that every citizen was safe – even the homeless ones.

The Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland announced on Monday that it would be welcoming in the homeless community of Dublin for the duration of Hurricane Ophelia.

Additionally, they served free snacks, soup, tea, and coffee.

Mosque representatives told the Independent: “it’s the minimum that we can do as humanitarians.”

Cop Buys Membership For Teen Caught Sneaking into Gym to Play Basketball

While some police officers may have taken the side of the law and punished a young trespasser trying to play basketball, this cop showed compassion instead.

A 15-year-old boy was repeatedly caught sneaking into the X-Sport Fitness in the Skokie village of Chicago. The youngster, who was reportedly just trying to play basketball with his friends, had possessed a membership in the past, but it expired when his family could no longer afford it.

As a juvenile without a membership, the teen was an insurance liability to the gym – so after catching him on the courts several different times, the gym workers were finally forced to call the police.

Officer Mario Valenti then showed up on the scene and – upon meeting the teen – asked the gym workers if he could put $150 towards a membership for the youth.

When gym staff called corporate headquarters to report the situation, the management was so shocked by the policeman’s kindness, they waived an additional $568 to cover a two-year membership for the teen.

“At the end of the day, it’s not about gratitude,” Valenti told the Chicago Tribune. “Most of us took this job to help people, not to hurt them.”

How an Apple Watch Saved a Man’s Life

It’s hard to imagine how a wristwatch could save you from certain death – but James Green’s Apple Watch is the reason why he is still alive.

The Brooklyn reporter and podcast host got a notification last week from his Heart Watch app saying that his heart rate was higher than usual. Despite sitting at his desk for several hours, his heart never fell below his usual resting rate of 54.

The notification, along with a few other symptoms that Green had noticed during the week, prompted him to visit a doctor.

A CT scan then showed that the 28-year-old New Yorker had a pulmonary embolism in his lungs, which – if ignored for any longer – would have been fatal.

A pulmonary embolism occurs when arteries within the lungs are blocked by blood clots. Thanks to Green’s early notice of the condition, he was treated with blood thinners to break up the clots.

Green gave a shoutout to the life-saving app on Twitter, thanking them for saving his life.

The Heart Watch Twitter account responded by saying: “Thanks! Also wow! This is so fantastic that you are ok. Humbled to have played a part. Wishing you a rapid recovery & best of future health.”

MIT Students Design and Donate Special Sleeping Bags to Syrian Refugees

Winter in Syria can be cold. Freezing cold.

With over 11 million people displaced since the beginning of the country’s civil war in 2011, many millions are without adequate heating or shelter during the cold winter months. A group of MIT students has set out to change that.

The team of six, led by MIT Sloan School of Management undergraduate Vick Liu, created TravlerPack, a light, durable, water-resistant sleeping bag that can withstand temperatures as cold as -10 degrees Celsius, with the goal of distributing them to Syrian refugees.

TravlerPack started as an idea scribbled on a napkin. During a freshman pre-orientation exercise last year, Liu was among a group of students discussing startup ideas when he realized he was interested in creating something that would help people. He wrote the idea for TravlerPack on a napkin and stuffed it in his pocket so he wouldn’t forget it.

“TravlerPack was a natural transition for me, since I went backpacking and camping growing up,” said Liu. “The refugee crisis is a huge problem, and I have experience with something that could really help people.”

With fuel and shelter hard to come by, refugees have few ways to keep warm during the Syrian winters. But a sleeping bag doesn’t require a battery or fuel. “It’s a simple solution to a big problem,” said Liu.

The idea grew from there, with the team sewing together its first prototype sleeping bag in a dorm room over the winter. To test it, Liu slept on the roof of his fraternity house one night during a Boston snowstorm last January — temperatures dropped to 15 degrees Fahrenheit, but Liu stayed warm the entire night.

TravlerPack sleeping bags have evolved since then. Initially insulated with sheep’s wool (the team bought the wool directly from a local shepherd they visited) the bags now use duck down.

Also, Liu and his team spoke directly with refugees to understand any additional features they would need. They found that refugees had no way to securely store valuables, especially at night, so each TravlerPack contains one outside storage compartment and five inside storage compartments. Each pack also has a built-in, detachable mosquito net and TravlerPacks can be zipped together to make one larger sleeping space for a family, or unzipped completely and used as a blanket. When not being used, TravlerPack compresses down into a small sack, which can be worn as a backpack, allowing refugees to keep both hands free.

After initially reaching out to around 80 potential manufacturers, the team officially partnered with one in April to make the sleeping bags. Then they had to figure out the logistics of actually getting the sleeping bags into the hands of refugees.

The team reached out to many non-profits and, luckily, NuDay Syria, a non-profit with experience distributing goods to Syrian refugees, signed on to distribute the packs within resettlement areas in Northwestern Syria.

In September, the group launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $15,000 to send TravlerPacks to Syrian refugees, and quickly reached their goal. Currently the team, which tentatively plans to become a non-profit, is raising more money to send 1,000 bags overseas, using their own MIT crowd-funding page where 100% of the proceeds are tax-deductible, and go directly to their mission—without the third party processing fees.

“We’ve been really lucky the whole way through,” Liu said. “This has been a journey of luck, intuition, and a lot of planning.”

17-Year-Old Army Private Reunites Online With Stranger She Saved From Las Vegas Shooting

Every day, we’re learning more about brave heroes who selflessly risked their own lives to help strangers during the shooting in Las Vegas – and one of the most recent heroes to reach the limelight was only a teen.

Jacquelyn Trujillo, a 17-year-old Army private, was attending the Route 91 Harvest festival to celebrate her return home from basic training with the Army National Guard. “It was like a dream come true,” she said about her night.

But things quickly changed when the bullets started raining over the crowd and chaos broke out.

“They all said, ‘Oh fireworks, it’s the speakers,’” she remembered. But she knew from her training that it was something far worse. “The sound is really familiar to me.”

“It was like being in a war zone,” Jacquelyn recalled. “We had to low-crawl while they’re firing rounds above our heads.”

The Army private grabbed her sister Francesca and started to run in a zig-zag, the way she’d been taught in training.

“She completely flipped into military mode,” Francesca said. The sisters ducked behind a wall, where a stranger named Tammy Dean was trying to stay safe.

“They saved me,” Tammy said.

Jacquelyn and Tammy eventually reunited over video chat. During the emotional meeting, Tammy admitted she owes her life to the young Army private.

5-Year-old Empties Piggy Bank to Buy Milk For Classmate – and Raises Money to Buy Hundreds More

This 5-year-old has always had milk with every meal – so when she noticed that one of her classmates couldn’t afford to buy a carton of her own, she decided to take matters into her own hands.

Two weeks ago, Sunshine Oelfke’s grandmother Jackie Sue spotted the youngster emptying out her piggy bank and counting the coins. She then dumped all of the change into a plastic baggy and tucked it into her school backpack.

Jackie Sue was confused as to what Sunshine was planning to do with the cash because the kindergartner exclusively uses the piggy bank to store up all of her allowance money so she can one day buy her own snowmobile.

When she asked why Sunshine was emptying her piggy bank, she was overwhelmed by the tot’s response.

“I’m going to take it for milk money. I’m taking it for my friend Layla,” explained Sunshine. “She doesn’t get milk — her mom doesn’t have milk money and I do.

There are 20 students in the 5-year-old’s classat Birchview Elementary School inIshpeming, Michigan – and half of them cannot afford to buy the $0.45 milk cartons for snack time. This means that providing every student in the class with milk costs roughly $180 per month.

So, after buying Layla’s milk, Sunshine eventually brought her kindergarten teacher all the money in her piggy bank, totaling up to $30. Jackie Sue and Sunshine then created a GoFundMe page to help raise money for the rest of the school year.

Because news of the youngster’s compassion has gone viral, the campaign has surged past their original goal and raised $6,000.

“Sunshine is 5 and doesn’t grasp the concept of the HUGE impact she is making, but we all do,” says Jackie Sue. “What she does understand, [is that] all her friends were able to get milk last week at school.”

“My heart is so full of pride and love knowing that in a world where there is so much hatred, there is a ray of Sunshine with a HUGE heart that – at the age of 5 – LOVES everyone and always wants to help,” she added.

In Personal Shoutout, Bill Murray is Happy to Share Couple’s Pregnancy News at Cubs Game

Bill freakin’ Murray is notorious for making headlines as a beloved party-crasher and Cubs fan – but this time, he is in the limelight for helping a couple make a pregnancy announcement for their parents.

Kirsten and Robbie Schloss were at a Chicago Cubs playoff game last week when they were seated next to the legendary Ghostbusters star himself.

The three of them had been chatting and goofing around throughout the game – but after their home team won the victory, Robbie decided to ask Murray for a favor.

After spending some time struggling with her fertility, Kirsten recently discovered that she had finally become pregnant. The couple had not yet told their parents about the development – so, they requested Murray to help them with the announcement.

In a video published on Robbie’s Instagram page, Murray can be scene posing with the couple and saying: “Hey, I got news for you … you’re going to be grandparents!”

“We’re gonna have a baby!” added Robbie.

According to the father-to-be, Kirsten’s parents saw the video and cried with joy.

“My father-in-law is a longtime Cubs fan so it was pretty awesome sending [the video] to him,” Schloss told TODAY.
