Cancer Trials Have Collectively Granted Patients Over 3 Million Years of Extra Life

If you’ve ever wondered how the fight against cancer is going, just ask the thousands of patients who have collectively been granted more time on this precious planet.

A new study conducted by the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) has found that thanks to federally funded cancer treatment studies, successful Phase III clinical trials have drastically extended the lives of cancer patients; collectively adding up to over 3.34 million more years of life.

The price tag for such valuable time? SWOG found that each year of life cost roughly $125 in federal funding.

SWOG, which is a network of cancer clinical trials network funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), has collectively enrolled over 200,000 volunteer patients and helped ensure the approval of 14 different cancer drugs and over 100 new practices of care.

“The NCI’s investment in SWOG and our network has resulted in a significant benefit to the American public,” said SWOG biostatistician Joseph Unger. “A lot of people with cancer have lived longer because of the therapies tested in our publicly-funded trials. At the same time, the cost of this research is relatively low. So with high impact and low cost, it’s a great value for taxpayers.”

Unger conducted his research by analyzing 23 different Phase III randomized clinical trials that were shown to extend the lifespan of patients suffering from a variety of cancers, including lung, breast, skin, and prostate, as well as blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.

MORETerminally Ill 6-yo Raises $1Mil For Medical Research: “Some kids don’t even make it to 5”

Assuming the treatments became standards of care, Unger then calculated how many new patients would benefit from the therapies in hospitals worldwide. If every patient benefitted from the average of five or more years of survival, then SWOG has helped millions of cancer patients live longer lives. Even if Unger overestimated the amount of years gained from the treatments, it can still tally up to about 2 millions years granted, rather than 3 million.

“Time is the most priceless gift we have, and the ability to give people with cancer more time with their loved ones is a major achievement,” said SWOG Group Chair Dr. Charles Blanke, the senior author of this abstract. “To put the numbers in context, the most conservative estimate of 2 million years is the equivalent of giving about three extra years of life to every one of the estimated 600,000 Americans expected to die of cancer this year. This is an exceptional benefit to come out of federally-funded cancer research.”

Beneath the Falling Yellow Leaves: The Joy of Being an Aged Care Worker

One year ago, I took a new and unexpected turn in my life. I was completely broke with no income, and it had been like that for a long time. I had been working nonstop for years as a professional photographer, but it was no longer generating any income.

I saw a job for an ‘Aged Care Worker’ position and didn’t think I would like it, but the agency explained that there are different levels of care, and I could choose the ‘low care’ option, which I found very appealing.

I went for an interview, was sent for a thorough medical check, then was offered the job. I had to have a whole host of vaccinations, apply for a police check certification, change the insurance on my car, fill in a mountain of paperwork, and learn how to use their mobile computer system and understand a whole new range of terminology, as well as be able to work to a tight schedule that involved a lot of travel throughout suburbs that I didn’t know very well. The same month I started the job, July 2016, I went back to study 2 days a week for 6 months. I worked my butt off in class and doing assessments, plus 120 hours of practice experience – it nearly broke me. I attained my certification and was one of the top students in the class.

I work mostly with clients who have dementia, and found that I really enjoyed one certain aspect of the work, and that is the role of offering social support (yes, that’s actually a thing). I did what I do best, and took a personal interest in these lovely oldies and showed them that they are special, valued, and interesting.

I also became known as the “massage lady”, as they usually get a free shoulder massage before I leave. And most of these people request me back, which means my roster is basically full of “social support” work – so, I have earned my way into having the perfect job.

I didn’t know it one year ago, but it is actually ‘my calling’ I was born for this job. And if you have any preconceptions about what my job entails, this photo and little story gives you a glimpse into how I spend my Saturdays.

When I took this photo, I was with two elderly women – two of the nicest people I have ever met; and I am blessed to spend time in their company. We gazed in awe at the magnificence of these trees with their leaves drifting in the breeze and they said “Isn’t it beautiful? It’s magical.”

Linking arms with these two gorgeous ladies, we walked under the trees and were all smiling in awe at the beauty around us and at how grateful we were to be in each other’s company. Then, one of the ladies started reciting a poem she had learned many years ago, called “Yellow Leaves”. I almost cried. But I was too happy, so I gently caressed her cheek with the back of my hand and told her she was ‘gorgeous’ – she said I was ‘precious’ and the third lady started to dance… beneath the falling yellow leaves.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Kayaks Over to a Family to Discuss Climate Change

In possibly one of the most endearingly Canadian gestures he has shown in office, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is trending on Twitter for casually kayaking up to a family on World Environment Day and chatting it up with a local family.

Carrie Robinson, whose parents were discussing the rising water levels of Ontario’s Niagara River and similar environmental issues with Trudeau, filmed the exchange and later posted the clip on social media.

“Justin Trudeau just kayaked up to my house and talked to my parents? Classic,” says Robinson.

Trudeau had been on his way down the river from delivering some hard-hitting comments on climate change and Canada’s position with the Paris Climate Accord.

“The future is still bright for those who have the courage to confront hard truths and the confidence to stay the course. Canada will not back down from our commitment to fight climate change,” said the life vest-clad Trudeau. “And we are not alone. Around the world, nearly every country is on our side. … We can’t walk away from the reality of climate change, and we won’t walk away from a global plan that has a realistic chance of fighting it.”

Homeless Man Donates $10K to Shelter “to Make Sure His Friends Are Safe”

An anonymous homeless man is being hailed for donating $10,000 to a shelter in order to make sure that his friends are taken care of.

The donation, which came out of the man’s residential school settlement money, will be used to help fund the Shelter House’s Street Outreach Services (SOS) program in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The shelter’s development officer, Alexandra Calderon, says that the anonymous donor visited her office a few weeks ago with a support worker and presented her with the check.

“I actually thought I had misread the cheque… I was floored. The support worker actually had tears in her eyes!” Calderon told CTV News.

When Calderon tried to refuse the check, he insisted, saying that he wanted to make sure his friends were safe.

“He has a personal relationship with a lot of his friends who live at the shelter or who live at our managed alcohol program so he wanted to make sure that there was someone that they could call when they needed help.”

MOREHomeless Man Who Became Hero in Manchester Bombing Rewarded With Housing

Shelter House has been raising money to reboot their SOS program since it lost funding in March. The SOS team was composed of professional volunteers who visited homeless encampments and high-risk individuals in order to distribute food, water, blankets, and other essentials to those who may not have them otherwise. Individuals, businesses, and law enforcement officials could request the SOS team to provide homeless or intoxicated people with anything from transportation, to just a friendly face.

The shelter is now half-way to reaching their target fundraising goal of $200,000 – and a fair portion of that is definitely thanks to the generosity of a homeless man looking out for his friends.

Dad Wears the Tie His Son Made as a Little Boy to Graduation Day

An 18-year-old who graduated from high school earlier this week was honored not just by his school – but also by his father sporting a hand drawn Pokémon tie that his son made him in 1st grade.

Dylan Olivo says that he didn’t even know that his father had kept the tie after eleven years, let alone that he would wear it to the ceremony.

RELATEDWoman Goes From Homelessness to Graduating Harvard

The youth from Buda, Texas had decorated the tie specially for his father with a Pikachu and several Poké Balls when he was only 7 years old.

Though Dylan had not seen the tie since he first made it in grade school, his father Robert had reportedly kept it for over a decade so he could specifically wear it to his graduation.

Dylan was “shocked“ by the adorable gesture – and with such a supportive father, there is no doubt that the youth is going to be the very best that no one ever was when he attends the University of Texas in the fall.

Ballet Dancer Saves Man Pushed Onto Subway Tracks

When this 31-year-old ballet dancer saw that no one was moving to rescue a homeless man who had fallen onto the New York City subway tracks, he knew that he had to be the one to act.

Gray Davis was returning from watching his wife perform with the American Ballet Theater at the Metropolitan Opera House on Saturday night when two people on the other side of the tracks started arguing.

The two people, a 23-year-old woman and a 58-year-old homeless man, started throwing punches at each other when the homeless man fell onto the Manhattan train tracks below. The woman took off running from the subway station as the man was lying unmoving on the rails.

Despite there being a train due any minute, Gray leapt into action.

“At first I waited for somebody else to jump down there,” Gray told the New York Times. “People were screaming to get help. But nobody jumped down. So I jumped down.”

Witnesses were stunned by the dancer’s strength as he lifted the homeless man above his head, and onto the safety of the platform.

“We were all horrified about what was about to happen as the man lay unresponsive on that track… out of no where and just in time we all watched as a brave young man jumped down, and lifted the man high up on to safety like he was a feather,” said Gray’s mother Janie Krabbe B. LeTourneau. “He then lifted himself up miraculously just before the train got there. People started cheering and yelling ‘you are a hero’.”

Gray, who dances with the American Ballet Theater himself, had not been performing that night because he has been recovering from a herniated disk for the last month – but that didn’t stop him from saving the day.

“The NYPD came, arrested the lady, then got our statement, and told Gray he did a very brave thing and no doubt saved the man’s life… the man was rushed to [the] hospital and we pray he will be ok. My son has always made me proud, but I’ve never been as proud of him as I was tonight, out of 2 full platforms of people, he was the only person brave enough to jump down and save that man’s life. This certainly is a day I will never forget in more ways than one,” added LeTourneau.

How a Spontaneous Radio Interview Changed Poor Blind Student’s Life

This 21-year-old blind college student had already been through countless hardships when she went to the Radio City 91.1 station building last month – and she had no idea that winning a radio contest would end up changing her life.

Nikita Shukla is a third-year college student who has been studying to be a lawyer at Government Law College in Mumbai, India. Back in May, Nikita was one of the few lucky callers who received a prize for calling into the Mumbai Masala show.

When she went into the station’s facility to claim her prize, she asked if she could meet the show’s radio jockey, Sucharita Tyagi.

While the two were chatting, Nikita started sharing some tidbits about her life. Tyagi was so shocked by the student’s circumstances, she asked Nikita to go on the record.

Tyagi then started tweeting Nikita’s story to her 10,000 Twitter followers.

“Nikita is completely blind. Something her parents were not very excited about, and wanted to get her married right after high school,” writes Tyagi. “When Nikita refused and insisted on studying further, she was asked to leave the house.”

The host goes on to explain how Nikita was about to leave the city when her friends convinced her to stay in Mumbai and continue studying. Together, they were able to accumulate enough money for the student to stay at a hostel and go to school through small scholarships and donations from compassionate professors. Due to her tight financial situation, however, Nikita could only afford the meals that were provided for free through the hostel. This resulted in the youth only eating about 20 meals per month – all while scoring over 80% on her exams.

When Tyagi started speaking about Nikita’s story on her show, hundreds of phone calls and emails poured in from listeners who wanted to donate. The financial contributions added up to thousands of dollars in donations.

“Not ONE person asked for proof, not ONE person said ‘but what if she runs away with my money?’ No, people just opened their hearts and gave,” says Tyagi. “We raised enough to cover her tuition, hostel and canteen fee. My girl can eat three meals a day now. And become a kickass lawyer!”

When presented with the money, Nikita couldn’t help but break down in tears.

“A single, blind girl who chose education over family, she couldn’t believe people willingly GAVE her their money,” Tyagi added. “Nikita Shukla, you star!”

On the Eve of World Environment Day, Volunteers Remove 160 Tons of Filth From Beach

On the eve of this most joyous of World Environment Days, hundreds of Indian volunteers have assisted in cleansing a beach of its 160 tons of collected filth.

Over 2,000 volunteers spent their Sunday picking up plastic trash on the 2-mile stretch of Versova Beach in Mumbai, India.

The movement was led by lawyer Afroz Shah, who has spent the last 87 weekends organizing community clean-ups on the beach. In honor of the holiday, however, he was also joined by several teams of volunteers from local businesses and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

In addition to picking up the trash, the group planted over 500 coconut trees, 100 of which were donated by UNEP. The community hopes to plant another 2,500 trees in order to create a “coconut lagoon”, which they hope will become a tourist hotspot. The coconuts will also provide a source of income for local merchants.

“Before this movement, we were helpless when we saw garbage affecting the marine life, but nothing was done about it,” a local fisherman told the IndiaTimes. “However, after the clean-up drive, we can see the difference. We have realized that if the entire fishing community of Versova comes together, there will be no plastic in sight.”

Fans Score Free Tickets to Stanley Cup Finals From Stranger Who Dialed Wrong Number

This lucky couple was fortunate enough to be the accidental recipients of free Stanley Cup Final tickets after a stranger dialed their number instead of someone else’s.

Though Amy Santora and her husband are big hockey fans, they haven’t been to a game in 22 years. Then, an hour before Game 2 of the Pittsburgh Penguins facing off the Nashville Predators on Thursday night, Amy received a text from a number she didn’t recognize that was addressed to someone named Julianne.

The text went on to say that the owner of the mystery number wasn’t able to sell their Game 2 tickets and that they were leaving them at will call for whoever wanted to pick them up.

Amy wrote back, saying that though she wasn’t the intended recipient of the text, she and her husband were big Penguins fans and they would be happy to use the tickets.

Despite how Amy wasn’t expecting to receive a response, the sender said that they would be leaving the tickets at will call in Amy’s name.

Shocked, Amy and her husband rushed to the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – and sure enough, there were two $329 tickets waiting for them.

To top off the night, the stranger never asked for money in exchange for the tickets – and the Penguins went on to win the game 4 to 1.

Michael Bloomberg Pledges $15Mil to Ensure U.S. Fulfills Paris Climate Accord

In response to President Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from participation in the Paris climate accord, Michael Bloomberg said Thursday that his nonprofit foundation would commit $15 million to fill the gap left by the U.S. government backing out of the 2015 global agreement.

On Friday the billionaire announced the creation of “America’s Pledge,” a new U.S. effort coordinated by Bloomberg Philanthropies, that will ensure there is no disruption to the work being done to implement the Paris Agreement, following the U.S. withdrawal on a federal level.

“Americans are not walking away from the Paris Climate Agreement,” said Bloomberg, who serves as the United Nation’s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change. “Mayors, governors, and business leaders from both political parties are signing onto to a statement of support that we will submit to the U.N. – and together, we will reach the emission reduction goals the United States made in Paris in 2015.”

CHECK OUT: Bloomberg Gives $3Mil to Job Training For Coal Communities in Decline

In a statement following his Friday meeting with new French President Emmanuel Macron, he explained how Americans will fulfill the Paris Agreement “from the bottom up”:

The strong consensus among scientists is that the climate is changing due to pollution from human activity. The timing and magnitude of the changes are harder to pin down, but we cannot stick our heads in the sand and ignore the risks they present, especially when we’re already seeing the effects all around us – whether they’re measured in rising sea levels or depleting coral reefs.

Prevention is the best medicine – and the overwhelming majority of Americans believe we should be taking action on climate change. The U.S. is the world’s second largest contributor of greenhouse gases, so we have a particular responsibility to lead – and it’s in our own interest to do so, because if we don’t, we will pay for it in worse health, lost jobs, and a weaker economy.

MORECompany is Offering to Retrain Coal Miners as Wind Farmers For Free

Now, I want to be clear: I’m not here to criticize what happened in Washington yesterday. The White House made its decision on the Paris Agreement – but here’s what is most important for the world to understand: In the U.S., emission levels are determined far more by cities, states, and businesses than they are by our federal government.

Over the past decade, the U.S. has led the world in emission reductions – and our federal government had very little to do with it. It happened because of leadership from cities, public opposition to coal plants, and market forces that have made cleaner sources of energy – including solar and wind – cheaper than coal. It makes no sense to pay extra to poison our environment – or to kill jobs. And the clean energy industry is now creating far more jobs than we are losing in the fossil fuel industry.

The fact of the matter is: Americans don’t need Washington to meet our Paris commitment, and Americans are not going to let Washington stand in the way of fulfilling it. That’s the message mayors, governors, and business leaders all across the U.S. have been sending.

RELATEDLEGO Reaches 100% Renewable Energy Goal 3 Years Early

Through my role as the U.N. Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change I will notify the Secretary-General and Climate Change Secretariat that U.S. cities, states, businesses, and others will aim to meet the U.S. commitment to reduce our emissions 26% below 2005 levels by 2025. We are already half-way there – and we can accelerate our progress further, even without any support from Washington.

So today, we want the world to know: The U.S. will meet our Paris commitment… The American government may have pulled out of the Agreement, but the American people remain committed to it – and we will meet our targets.”

He vowed that America’s Pledge will also fulfill the Paris Agreement’s reporting requirements, so the world can track progress in the U.S., just as they can with any other nation.

People Who Are Dying Are a Lot Happier Than You Think

Fear of death is a fundamental part of the human experience—we dread the possibility of pain and suffering and lament the day when we may lose our loved ones. Although thinking about dying can cause considerable angst, new research suggests that the actual emotional experiences of the dying are both more positive and less negative than people expect.

”When we imagine our emotions as we approach death, we think mostly of sadness and terror,” says psychological scientist Kurt Gray of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “But it turns out, dying is less sad and terrifying—and happier—than you think.”

The research, which examined the writings of terminally ill patients and inmates on death row, suggests that we focus disproportionately on the negative emotions caused by dying, without considering the actual experiences of those at death’s door.

WATCH400 Students Sing Breathtaking Tribute at the Window of Teacher With Cancer

”In our imagination, dying is lonely and meaningless, but the final blog posts of terminally ill patients and the last words of death row inmates are filled with love, social connection, and meaning,” said Gray.

He and his graduate student Amelia Goranson, and their co-authors Ryan Ritter, Adam Waytz, and Michael Norton, started thinking about the emotional experience of dying when they came across the last words of death-row inmates in Texas, collected by the state’s Department of Justice. They were surprised by how upbeat the statements were, and wondered whether our feelings about death and dying might be clouded by our tendency to zero in on negative experiences.

CHECK OUT: Man Who Shot Up Mosque Goes Back For Forgiveness, Finds Hugs Waiting

In their first study, Gray and colleagues analyzed the emotional content of blog posts from terminally ill patients who were dying of either cancer or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). To be included in the study, the blogs had to have at least 10 posts over at least 3 months and the author had to have died in the course of writing the blog. For comparison, the researchers asked a group of online participants to imagine that they had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and to write a blog post, keeping in mind that they had only a few months to live.

Using a computer-based algorithm, trained research assistant coders, and online participant coders, the researchers analyzed the actual and imagined blog posts for words that described negative and positive emotions, such as “fear,” “terror,” “anxiety,” “happiness,” and “love.”

The results revealed that blog posts from individuals who were terminally ill included considerably more positive emotion words and fewer negative emotion words than did those written by participants who simply imagined they were dying.

RELATEDTeen Survives Shot to the Head: “I am tougher than a bullet”

Looking at the patients’ blog posts over time, the researchers also found that their use of positive emotion words actually increased as they neared death, while their use of negative emotion words did not. These patterns held even after Gray and colleagues took the overall word count and number of blog posts into account, suggesting that the increase in positive emotion words was not simply due to the effects of writing over time.

In a second study, the researchers conducted similar analyses comparing the last words of inmates on death row with the poetry of death-row inmates and the imagined last words of another group of online participants. Again, they found that the words of those who were actually close to death were less negative and more positive in emotional tone than the words of those who were not close to death.

POPULARDying Writer Pens Heartfelt Plea For Someone to Marry Her Husband

Both the terminally ill patients and the inmates facing execution seemed to focus on things that help us make meaning of life, including religion and family, suggesting that such things may help to quell anxiety about death as it approaches.

Gray and his co-authors acknowledge that the findings may not apply to all people who are approaching death – it’s unclear whether individuals facing a great deal of uncertainty or those who die of old age express similarly positive emotions near the end of life.

Ultimately, the findings suggest that our expectations may not match the reality of dying, which has important implications for how we treat people who are dying.

“Currently, the medical system is geared toward avoiding death – an avoidance that is often motivated by views of death as terrible and tragic,” the researchers write in their paper. “This focus is understandable given cultural narratives of death’s negativity, but our results suggest that death is more positive than people expect: Meeting the grim reaper may not be as grim as it seems.”

While Trying to Lose Weight, Here’s Why You Should Wear Bunny Slippers

You probably wouldn’t associate bunny slippers with losing weight, but when you’re doing your best to shed a few pounds, maybe you should – at least metaphorically. Here’s why.

There is one thing all dieters agree on: weight loss, especially in the early phases, takes its toll physically. In a word, it’s exhausting. There are two very real scientific reasons for this.

The first is that fat cells are the garbage cans of your body. At the center of every fat call is a repository where the body locks up toxins. When those fat cells are burned for fuel all those toxins are dumped into your bloodstream, all day, every day, for as long as you’re dieting. This can make you very, very tired.

RELATEDDrink 1 to 3 Extra Cups Of Water Daily For Weight Loss, Health – Study

The second is that, in order to lose weight, you are usually consuming fewer calories than you need to function at your peak level. It means that, for you to use your fat for fuel, you sometimes have to be running a fuel-deficit. And it simply won’t feel great.

But the good news is… I want you to relax during this period of exhaustion. You don’t actually have to put on bunny slippers, but that is my code for taking it easy during dieting. The greatest advantage of this is you will not get lured into activities that unnecessarily deplete your willpower.

Willpower is a cognitive function that gives you the ability to self-regulate. And we all have access to this power in limited doses. It only takes about fifteen minutes before we normally run out. Despite our best intentions, we cave to the temptation eating something we vowed we wouldn’t. Which is why it’s essential to have a program that anticipates you will run out of willpower and has you covered.

MORECheck Out This Yoga Studio Made Entirely of Salt

The first big willpower depleter is exercise. Pushing yourself to exercise in the early weight loss phase is a huge no-no in my program. In fact, our studies have shown that the people who insist on exercising lose the least weight of any group. The calories burned just don’t make up for what happens if you get depleted and eat off your plan. The fact is you can do more damage with your mouth than you can make up for on the treadmill.

The next is stress. Remember, you have bunny slippers on! Don’t say yes to chairing the big PTA fundraiser, don’t accept a project at work that will mean weeks of lost sleep. Try wherever possible to take life down a notch so that the huge lifestyle changes you’re making get the space and respect they deserve.

To replenish willpower, make sure you are getting enough sleep, avoid stress, and yes, put away the sneakers and kick back with those slippers on.

Veterans Find Peace Protecting African Wildlife from Poachers

U.S. Military personnel returning home from combat have a hard enough time adjusting to civilian life, let alone attempting to find suitable employment. Veterans are often burdened with mental health issues or PTSD on top of that.

That’s why this nonprofit is hiring those veterans to protect endangered South African wildlife from poachers.

Veterans Empowered to Protect African Wildlife (VETPAW) gives soldiers the chance to redeploy their military knowledge and combat expertise on behalf of elephants and rhinos. These jobs put the veterans’ skills to good use, while also providing emotionally meaningful work to save lives.

RELATED2,000 Veterans Just Arrived at Standing Rock to Form Human Shield Around Protestors

African park rangers are often shot by the poachers who are intent on killing animals for their ivory tusks or horns. With the training and assistance provided by the VETPAW soldiers, conservationists can work to defend the massive mammals, while knowing someone has their own back.

The Limpopo-based VETPAW teams manage several private land reserves around the region. According to the Guardian, their presence also offers valuable protection for the local farmers and communities that are often harmed by invading poachers.

“When I returned to civilian life after the Marine Corp, I lost myself. I didn’t really know what I was here for,” says VETPAW founder Ryan Tate. “Learning about the brutality of the poaching crisis and the rangers who are dying protecting wildlife, hit me harder than anything I’d ever seen—and I’ve seen some crazy stuff. I realized I have the skills necessary to help save animals and the people who risk their lives daily.”

“That’s when I decided to create VETPAW.”

Sea Cow Population Thriving in Australia Thanks to Baby Boom

The sea cows of Australia have made a huge comeback from the dwindling numbers of six years ago.

In 2011, the dugong population of the Great Barrier Reef was estimated to be 600 without any sign of calves or newborns – the lowest it had been since the 1980s. The condition of the species, categorized as “vulnerable to extinction”, caused great alarm amongst conservationists.

Half a decade later, however, sea cows have rebounded to about 5,000 in number – 10% of which are calves, according to aerial surveys conducted off the east coast of Queensland.

This exciting comeback can be credited to the return of sea grass to the region; the main component of a sea cow’s diet. Most of the sea grass near the Great Barrier Reef was wiped out due to the effects of Cyclone Yasi.

It’s not just sea cow population increases that are cause for excitement, either – in January 2016, eleven months before the dugong surveys, manatee populations rebounded by 500%, enough to jettison them from the endangered species list.

Dad Creates Free Minecraft Server Specifically Dedicated to Kids With Autism

Children can already be overwhelmed and bullied in the real world, but maybe the internet can offer some solace. That’s what this dad created when he built an entire Minecraft server for children with autism.

Stuart Duncan, also known by his online alias AutismDad, created Autcraft: a server that has garnered over 8,000 players since it was created four years ago.

He recalled its genesis when he wrote, “In 2012–2013, I saw parent after parent after parent posting on social media: ‘Do you have a child with autism that loves Minecraft? Would they be willing to play with my child?’”

“These parents were all reaching out because they were tired of seeing their children being bullied on the servers that they tried. Their children were breaking their keyboards, crying and feeling terrible. They felt powerless to help. So, Autcraft was my way of helping.”

Since Duncan himself has been diagnosed as autistic, he understood how vital it was for children to have safe spaces to play. Autcraft has become his day job, with all his time dedicated to maintaining the server alongside a team of volunteers. He currently asks for donations via Patreon.

“I have made it my mission to help as many children with autism as I can which means ensuring that Autcraft remains a free server for those who need it. It is my belief that those who need a safe place like Autcraft most are also the ones least likely to be able to afford a membership fee.”

“[Autcraft] gives children with autism and their families a place where they can play the game they love with people just like them, and they can feel safe and confident to just be themselves,” said Duncan. “It’s not about getting other people to accept them but getting them to accept themselves.”

New “Instantly Rechargeable” Battery Could Ensure the Future of Electric Cars

One of the biggest inconveniences of owning an electric or hybrid vehicle is how long it takes to recharge the batteries. Depending on the size of the battery and the speed of the recharging station, powering up a sustainable vehicle can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 12 hours.

Now, however, thanks to the latest technology from Purdue University, recharging your battery can be as simple as filling up a gas tank.

John Cushman and a team of researchers developed the IF-battery: an instantly rechargeable battery that is safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly.

“Electric and hybrid vehicle sales are growing worldwide and the popularity of companies like Tesla is incredible, but there continues to be strong challenges for industry and consumers of electric or hybrid cars,” said Cushman, who led the research team. “The biggest challenge for the industry is to extend the life of a battery’s charge and the infrastructure needed to actually charge the vehicle. The greatest hurdle for drivers is the time commitment to keeping their cars fully charged.”

“Designing and building enough of these recharging stations requires massive infrastructure development, which means the energy distribution and storage system is being rebuilt at tremendous cost to accommodate the need for continual local battery recharge,” said Eric Nauman, co-founder of If-battery. “If-battery is developing an energy storage system that would enable drivers to fill up their electric or hybrid vehicles with fluid electrolytes to re-energize spent battery fluids much like refueling their gas tanks.”

As opposed to burning gasoline, the used battery fluids that power the battery can simply be transported to a solar or wind farm in order to be recharged.

According to the researchers, flow batteries have already existed for some time – however, the If-battery is the first power source to eliminate the use of membranes. Membrane flow batteries are notorious for causing fires, as well as having shorter life spans.

“Membrane fouling can limit the number of recharge cycles and is a known contributor to many battery fires,” Cushman said. “If-battery’s components are safe enough to be stored in a family home, are stable enough to meet major production and distribution requirements and are cost effective.”

Students Ensure Teacher Will See Redwoods and Beaches Before it’s Too Late

This teacher has touched the lives of so many students, they wanted to make sure that she would be able to complete every last thing on her bucket list before cancer would claim her future.

Kay Wistrand is a language arts teacher at Tomball Junior High School in Tomball, Texas. When doctors found an uncommon tumor in her spine, Wistrand’s students were heartbroken.

As Wistrand was telling her class that she had been given two to three years to live, she mentioned in passing that she had always dreamed of going to California, seeing the redwoods, and dipping her toes in the Pacific Ocean – all of which she had never done before.

Four of her students decided to fund her bucket list journey through California and started a GoFundMe campaign with a $7,500 goal. Since it was created in February, the page has raised $10,000.

“Kay Wistrand is one of the best people I have ever had the opportunity to meet. She is an AMAZING English Language Arts teacher … And [she] is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had,” says the page’s creator Mickey Nolen. “Mrs. Wistrand has loved all of her students so much for many years. We just want to return the favor for all of the hard work she has put in to teach the youth of our community.”

Wistrand was so touched by the gesture, she announced her retirement upon realizing that she could finally journey to California – and all her students have since wished her bon voyage.

Postal Workers Shut Down Local Mailbox – to Keep Nesting Birds in Peace

The postal service is not about to be responsible for the uprooting of a tiny bird family – not if they can help it.

Ireland’s postal service, An Post, erected an endearing sign next to the mailbox in County Cavan reading: “Postbox Closed Due To Bird Nesting”.

According to the BBC, the mailman believes the birds to be sparrows.

While most people might not have a problem disturbing the little critters, An Post is much more understanding.

“We let nature take its course. It happens from time to time,” postal service representatives told the BBC. “Once the birds are gone, the post box resumes its duties.”

It may be a small gesture, but it’s still sweet to know that the Irish wildlife is cared for by government workers.
