9-Year-old Boy Skips Birthday Gifts to Help Protect Police Dogs

Ethan Green and Police Dog Screenshot KSTP

A nine-year-old boy asked his friends and family not to buy him birthday presents this year — instead, he wanted money.

With that money, he will help arm police dogs with bullet-proof vests.

Ethan Flint’s generosity inspired so many people that he ended up raising more than a thousand dollars.

He handed a homemade check for $1,290 to a foundation in St. Paul, Minnesota, that is buying vests to protect the city’s police K9 units.bretagne-and-denise-barkpost-submitted-cropped

“This kid has a heart of gold,” St. Paul Police Spokesman Steve Linders told ABC News.

Bullet-proof vests for dogs are expensive, as much as $2,500 each for the type the St. Paul Police Department uses. Ethan’s money will be combined with a restaurant’s donation to buy two vests.

Inmate Asks to Donate Bone Marrow to Judge Who Put Him in Prison

If you were to make a list of people willing to donate bone marrow to save your life, a man you placed behind bars for 25 years would probably not be your first pick.

Supreme Court Judge Carl Fox, however, found the exception.

After being diagnosed with blood cancer in April, Fox has been on a desperate search for a bone marrow donor to throw him a lifeline – what he didn’t expect was a letter from an inmate he had convicted offering to help.Kidney-transplant-Twitter-Mariana Tolentino

Committed for armed robbery, Charles Alston received a 25-year sentence while Fox was serving as district attorney, which he is still currently serving. Alston wrote to Fox in July volunteering to test as a donor, crediting his wish to help to his recent spiritual conversion into a changed man.

“There is no hatred or animosity in my heart towards you or any man,” Alston writes in his letter. “I have forgiven you for the verdict I received and [am] serving that time in all humility of heart.”

Because inmates aren’t able to sign onto the donor list for risk of infectious diseases, Alston is not able to donate, however Fox was touched by the gesture. From a handwritten letter by victim's mom - CBS snapshot

Mother’s Forgiveness Offers Convict Second Chance

“I was very touched by it … totally surprised. I never thought Charles Alston would’ve written me and offered me the right hand of fellowship and offer to do something to save my life,” Fox told WRAL. “He had every reason to be angry with me, given where he is and the sentence he was given. It means even that much more he did that given the circumstances.”

Los Angeles Officials Vow to Spend $200Mil on Helping Homeless

The Los Angeles City Council wants to spend an additional $100 million in the coming year to reduce homelessness — roughly doubling what it spends now.

With Tuesday’s announcement, Los Angeles became the first city in America to declare a public emergency over homelessness, and officials began planning a comprehensive strategy to help its citizens living on the street.

The extra money will let homeless people stay in shelters longer and give larger rent subsidies to get people into housing. Our keys!

By Putting Housing First, Utah Reduces Homeless Population by 91%

The official estimate is that 26,000 people are homeless in Los Angeles, a problem made worse by rising housing costs in the city.

While the plan is still being drawn up, and they haven’t revealed funding details, Mayor Eric Garcetti wants $5 million spent immediately on short term rent subsidies to “rapidly re-house” 1,000 people for six to nine-months. He’s asking for another $5 million to do the same specifically for homeless veterans.

“If we can lift up those in need, and pick up those left behind, then we can live up to the best of our ideals.”

His plan calls for opening winter shelters a month earlier and keeping them open a month longer in the spring.veteran-WTNH-news-video

The mayor also wants to develop regional centers where homeless people can store belongings, take showers, and do laundry, and expand the city’s outreach among homeless people to make them aware of services.

Store Owner Starts K-Cup Recycling Program, Gives Jobs to Disabled

Garnet Wheaton Screen Shot CBC

A Canadian furniture store owner woke up one morning and smelled the coffee.

He realized his company has truck routes that could help recycle wasteful plastic Keurig K-Cups in a way that could provide jobs for people with disabilities.

Garnet Wheaton’s trucks making deliveries to his store in Moncton, New Brunswick, usually return to the Halifax, Nova Scotia, warehouse empty. But now, they’re hauling used K-Cups to a recycler.

Dartmouth Center Screen Shot CBCHe’s arranged to have the Dartmouth Adult Services Center break open the discarded cups, turn the leftover coffee grounds into compost, and recycle the plastic shells.

The center provides jobs for adults with intellectual disabilities and its director says the recycling project helps to improve their people’s work skills.

K-Cup single serving plastic pods of coffee have become extremely popular, but they produce a surprising amount of waste. It’s been estimated that if you were to line up all the K-Cups discarded in a single year, they’d circle the earth 10 times. Recycling them is labor intensive, but a perfect job for centers like the one in Dartmouth to undertake.

“There is absolutely nothing that isn’t great about this project,” the center’s director, Cathy Deagle-Gammon, told CBC News.coffee - CC-rockindave1

Check Out the Surprising Products Being Made From Coffee Grounds

Because Wheaton sells K-Cups and coffeemakers inside his Wheaton’s Furniture stores, he wants to recycle as many cups as he can, saying it is the responsible thing to do. To promote the program he is offering a dollar’s worth of coffee products for every 24 K-Cups brought into his Moncton store.

If the idea works on this one route, Wheaton wants to expand it to his other stores and maybe one day use it a recycling model for all of Canada.

Wonderfully Imperfect: Don’t Define Yourself By Your Flaws

girl-looking-in-mirror-CC-Salvaje

While dashing to the train after my morning swim, I noticed a small pull in my brand-new stocking. By the time I got off the subway, my left leg resembled the tights of a punk-rocker. Not exactly the look I was striving for in a morning piled up with back-to-back meetings. The truth is, why did the wardrobe malfunction even matter?

Yet on a really small, ever-so-annoying level, somehow it did… and that got me thinking.

Cybill_Shepherd_1985-pubdomainI recalled an improbably famous People Magazine cover from 1990. Cybill Shepherd smiled broadly, a dazzling Hollywood leading lady right off the red carpet. However, in spite of the A-list team of stylists, hair and makeup experts who surely spent hours creating the “perfect look,” the most remarkable thing about the cover proved to be something rather unexpected. There was a significant run in her stocking.

When the actress saw the wardrobe malfunction she laughed and was not interested in changing into a new pair. To the surprise of the editorial team, hundreds of readers actually wrote letters thanking Ms. Shepherd for presenting herself as a regular person–runs in her stockings and all.Bar Belfast CC Terry Turner

Poem’s Twist Ending Gives Bar Patrons a Bizarre New Perspective

Each of us is wonderfully imperfect, including glamorous celebrities who occasionally get a snag. Perhaps you can’t find your cell phone charger as your phone starts powering off just as your doctor or your best friend calls to give you some important news. Or you get immersed in a magazine article and forget that your favorite activity is about to start in the teen lounge. Once you remember that the class started twenty minutes ago you head for the lounge getting there just in time to see all of the other patients laughing and walking back to their rooms. You missed the entire experience. When you or someone you love is grappling with a serious illness, sometimes it is precisely these little daily indignations that can trigger a strong negative emotional response that can make the incident seem even worse.

Trade Perfectionism for Imperfectionism

When we free ourselves from setting impossibly high standards of self-perfection, our ability to accept mistakes, failures and painful emotions actually allows us to experience more happiness since we don’t let the mistake or the imperfection define us and take over our lives. In his book, The Pursuit of Perfect: How to Stop Chasing Perfection and Start Living a Richer, Happier Life, Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar talks about our own and society’s crushing expectations. According to Ben-Shahar, the pursuit of perfection may actually be the most powerful internal obstacle to happiness.

In my experience, I’ve found that some of the most authentic conversations with strangers, friends and people I’ve met while spending lots of time in hospitals have been conversations where people are courageous enough to be vulnerable, not trying to project an image that “they’ve got it together all the time.” When people share from this rich, authentic place of vulnerability, then everyone can feel a sense of relief, a sense of connection, and a sense of hope. Connections like this make us feel safe.Elli pre-op smile

Young Woman Is Proof That Trusting Your Heart Can Save Your Life

As human beings, our bodies are wired with a mammalian care system programmed to respond to warm, gentle touch or a soothing voice that makes us feel comforted and safe. Think of a human baby or a baby deer being cared for by its mother. When mammals are nurtured, their bodies release oxytocin the natural chemical that makes us feel safe and calm.

You are human. Be kind to yourself.

Studies show that people who have self-compassion are able to brush off set-backs, disappointments, and mistakes without blowing them out of proportion. Dr. Kristen Neff is an expert on self-compassion. She defines self-compassion as “the importance of putting ourself in the circle of compassion which means treating ourselves with the same kindness, care and concern that we would treat a good friend.”sq-jumping-businessman-with-briefcase-joy-happy-CC-MiiiSH

How to Be Happier – 7 Steps to Contentment

Self-compassion is a way of relating to ourselves kindly, as we truly are, flaws and all. Neff shares the three elements of self-compassion:

Treat yourself with self-kindness.

Recognize that there is a common humanity. This is the process of “realizing how I am the same as others and that to be human is to be imperfect.” Recognition of our shared human experience allows us to feel connected to others, instead of feeling isolated in our suffering.

Be mindful. Neff defines this as being with “what is” in the present moment. When we notice we are feeling isolated or suffering, then this is precisely the time to give ourselves some self-compassion.

So the next time you experience a setback, simply stop and take a deep breath. Instead of taking it out on yourself with self-criticism, shame, anger, and other negative emotions, take another deep breath and give yourself a gentle hug or kind word. This simple step takes less than ten seconds and can prevent you from falling into a black hole of negative emotions and despair.

The more self-compassion you practice, the easier it becomes to replace the negative self-criticism with warm and loving self-talk. In doing this simple ritual you’ll be able to celebrate your wonderful imperfections as part of the glorious, messy journey to your true authentic self.meditating-on-the-beach-CC-HTB

10 Easy Ways You Can Practice Mindfulness

As I got into the elevator at my office building, I looked down at my disheveled blue stockings and quickly turned the run towards the inside of my leg where it was slightly less obvious. I confidently walked out of the elevator into the rest of my day. Later that night, the tangled hosiery was tossed into the trash while self-compassion helped me keep my spirit from landing in the garbage.

On September 10, Good News Network brought you the story of Meathead Movers, a California company that has been helping women to flee abusive relationships with all of their belongings, free of charge.

The day before the story ran, the movers had launched a plea asking other businesses to “get creative” and help victims of domestic violence. Their #MoveToEndDV campaign was meant to inspire others to rethink how they can work with shelters, or help women and men directly as they rebuild their lives following domestic violence.

Already 30 businesses have volunteered their services, including four different moving companies. Also stepping up, a pet-sitting business, a mortgage banker who will provide financial literacy classes at a local shelter, a massage therapist who wants to melt their stress away, and 23 others.

“I have to assign one of my employees full-time just to get support for the inquiries we’ve received around the world after your story,” Co-Founder Aaron Steed told Good News Network.

Their mission has also spurred overseas companies to volunteer: an Australian security services company is offering to install “panic buttons” so victims can click a button to request assistance during high stress situations.Monrovia-child-bride-rallyUN Photo:Emmanuel Tobey

“If you get a little creative you can make a huge impact of real value for those in need,” said Aaron. “Even if you’re not a business, if you have creative ways to give back please share it on the pledge page.”

Above all, Aaron is excited to be able to show victims of domestic violence—and their abusers—that there are options for support.

“These women are completely abandoning their life as they know it and trying to rebuild from scratch, and businesses are rallying together for them,” Aaron said. “We want them to know that people in the community have their back. Most Quotable Athlete in History: Tribute to Catcher Yogi Berra (1925-2015)

Yogi_Berra_CC Martyna Borkowski

“It was like deja vu all over again” — Major League Baseball’s Yogi Berra passed away Tuesday night, exactly 69 years to the day of his MLB debut for the New York Yankees.

A record-breaking catcher and fan favorite, Berra was also remembered for his “Yogi-isms” — quotes that twisted logic and crafted paradoxes to leave fans chuckling. (See our favorites below.)Matt LaChappa-baseball-disabled-MLB-vid-screenshot

Berra played in more World Series than anyone else in history — 14 of them — and was on the winning team in ten of those championships. As a New York Yankee, he took the field alongside greats like Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle and played in 15 consecutive All-Star Games.

Holland's_Yogi CC Stephen HollandOne of baseball’s most enduring images is of Berra leaping into the arms of Yankees pitcher Don Larsen after Berra caught for him in the firstWorld Series no-hitter.

As a batter, it was hard for an opposing pitcher to get a ball past Berra. He was notorious for hitting bad pitches — even those outside the strike zone. In the 1950 season, he was struck out only 12 times.

As a player, Berra was named the American League’s Most Valuable Player three times, and as a team manager, led both the Yankees and the New York Mets to the World Series.George-Springer-Astros-CC-Apardavila-cropped

Before his major league career, Berra served as a gunners mate in the U.S. Navy aboard a ship that transported troops to the D-Day landings in Normandy.

He was as well known as a character off the field as he was a player on it. Berra used his folksy philosopher persona to pitch products ranging from cat food to beer. In a commercial for the chocolate drink, Yoo-Hoo, a woman asks him if it’s hyphenated.

“No, ma’am, it isn’t even carbonated,” he replied.Hockey fan with chemo Jets In-house camera

Even as he moved into an assisted living facility, Berra kept his sense of humor, listing his house for a sale price of $888,000 — a sly nod to his Yankees jersey, number 8.

His ability to turn a phrase — or turn it on its head — continued beyond his baseball career. More of his most famous Yogi-isms include:

“Ninety percent of the game is half-mental.”

“When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

And he once advised people to, ”Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours.”

Doctors found Houle was so badly dehydrated his heart, liver, and kidneys were shutting down. He says he probably wouldn’t have known it in time if the gadget hadn’t warned him how fast his heart was beating.

After the story got out, Apple CEO Tim Cook called Houle to check on him — and offer him a new iPhone and an internship next summer with the tech giant. Reading-text-photoby-Jhaymesisviphotography

Katrina Rescuer Reunites with Girl in Iconic Photo 10 Years Later

A picture of a little girl hugging her rescuer came to symbolize the hope amid Hurricane Katrina’s destruction ten years ago.

For Master Sgt. Michael Maroney, the man in that iconic photo, it symbolized a decade-long mystery that finally was solved–and an emotional reunion as a reward.

Maroney, an Air Force para-rescue specialist, didn’t even know at the time another Airman had snapped the photo of the little girl, smiling broadly and giving him a giant bear hug. As a father of two, just back from the war in Afghanistan, he said that hug meant a lot to him — and even more as time went by. rainbow-over-world-trade-center-Twitter-BenSturner-leverageagency

“When she wrapped me up with that hug, I just melted, and the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders,” Maroney told ABC News. “Everything in the world just stopped, and I wasn’t in New Orleans or in the devastation, I was just being hugged by a beautiful little girl.”

But he didn’t know the child’s name or how to find her.

Last year, a friend helped him set up a social media search with the hashtag #FindKatrinaGirl. And last week, the two met again for the first time in 10 years on an episode of the daytime talk show The Real.Coast Guard swimmer completes triathlon-distance swim to rescue 4

LaShay Brown is 13-years-old–and taller than her rescuer now – but one thing hasn’t changed.

“When she smiled, I knew it was her,” Maroney told Yahoo! News.
