Parkinson’s Researchers Now Have $24 Million To Keep Going Thanks to Funding From Michael J. Fox

Michael J. Fox

Michael J. Fox has just announced that his foundation is giving away over $24 million in grants for researching and treating Parkinson’s disease.

The actor, who is best known for his roles in Back to the Future and Spin City, was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease shortly before he retired from his career on the silver screen in 2000.

Later that same year, he launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which has since become the world’s largest and most acclaimed nonprofit for Parkinson’s research and advocacy.

Over the course of the last 19 years, the charity has funded more than $800 million in Parkinson’s research – and they just announced that they are giving away $24 million more in grant funding.

RELATEDFirst Parkinson’s Patient to Get Unique Stem Cell Treatment Could Pave the Way for Many More by 2023

The funding is being distributed in the form of 127 new grant awards for various projects seeking to understand, treat, diagnose, and measure the progression of the disease.

One of the more notable projects to receive a grant from the foundation is a New Zealand research initiative from the University of Auckland which is investigating the genetics of Parkinson’s disease “from an unusual and promising angle.”

Mutations in the gene known as GBA – short for glucocerebrosidase beta acid – are the most common genetic risk factors for Parkinson’s, affecting about 10% of the more than 6 million people estimated to have the disease.

WATCHAlan Alda Announces Parkinson’s Diagnosis, But He Wants to Use It to Inspire People

Associate professor of molecular science Justin O’Sullivan and his team at the university’s Liggins Institute will use a powerful 3D genome-mapping tool they devised to reveal the connections of GBA to other genes. They think parts of the gene may be acting as “DNA switches” and disrupting the functioning of other genes that GBA comes into contact with through the way that DNA is coiled inside cells.

DNA, the long molecules containing our entire genetic blueprint, are around two meters long when unwound, but packed into cell nuclei measuring only 100th of a millimeter across. Through this coiling, segments that are far apart when the DNA is stretched out, come into contact with each other.

O’Sullivan and his team are at the forefront of international efforts to show that these spatial connections can change the functioning of genes and potentially play a role in a wide range of diseases.

MOREDiabetes Drug ‘Significantly Reverses Memory Loss’ in Mice With Alzheimer’s

“Most research into GBA’s role in Parkinson’s focuses on whether GBA mutations hamper the activity of a particular enzyme, a member of the cell’s ‘cleaning crew’ that degrades damaged or surplus cell parts,” Dr O’Sullivan says.

“We’re coming at it from a totally different angle – we’re looking into whether ‘switches’ inside GBA mutations turn up or down the functioning of other genes that they come into contact with. We think some of the more unusual findings about GBA might be able to be explained if it has connections to other genes.

LOOKParkinson’s Pen For Patients Who Want to Keep Writing Christmas Cards

“If we are right, we will identify a network of interrelated Parkinson’s genes. This may help advance research efforts for therapies, and bring together previously confusing or unrecognized connections.”

“For us, this grant is an amazing opportunity to investigate a disorder that has a huge impact on people. We hope to make insights that ultimately make a real difference to patients.”

When Grocery Store Accidentally Leaves Doors Unlocked, Honest Customer Leaves $5 for Tomatoes

When a grocery store accidentally left their doors unlocked during a national holiday, their shoppers reacted with nothing but classic Canadian kindness and honesty.

The Food Basics supermarket in Kingston, Ontario was scheduled to be closed on February 18th in honor of Family Day. Due to a mistake from management, however, their doors were left unlocked.

Upon entering the empty store, several curious shoppers were confused by the lack of employees.

Though this would have been a perfect time to take advantage of the five-finger discount, only one customer reportedly left the store with groceries in hand – but not before he left some money on the counter.

“I was standing there trying to decide what to do, and a guy comes out of the store with two packages of cherry tomatoes,” an anonymous eyewitness told the Kingstonist.

“So I asked ‘Hey, buddy! You just taking some tomatoes?’ He said ‘I left $5 on the counter.’”

The customer then called Kingston Police to the scene where they waited onsite until management arrived just after 4PM.

Staffers were surprised to find that nothing had been damaged or taken except for the cherry tomatoes that had been overpaid for by the humble customer.

“The doors were open, and we don’t know … what’s to blame for that, but it appears that the store manager indicated nothing was seriously damaged or stolen,” a police spokesperson told the news outlet.

Mother and Daughter Are Saved From Teetering Car Thanks to a Teen’s Snapchat App

Though older generations may be quick to scoff over the use of social media, a mother and daughter were recently rescued from their crashed car thanks to Snapchat.

38-year-old Gemma Fairweather and her 7-year-old daughter Martha were left teetering on the edge of a water-filled embankment after their car veered off of a country lane in England earlier this month.

The traumatizing incident happened just after 10pm while Fairweather was driving from Lowestoft, Suffolk to her home in Wymondham, Norfolk.

Fairweather had just dipped her headlights for an oncoming car when her Citroen ran off the road and rolled down a verge, narrowly missing a cluster of trees that took out the left wing mirror and smashed the passenger window.

MOREAfter Days Spent Lost in Freezing Rain, Rescued 3-Year-old Thanks a Bear for Allegedly Keeping Him Safe

Fairweather then contacted her boyfriend, Graham Potts, who lives just five minutes away from the crash site in Lowestoft. She asked him to call emergency services and help them escape, but the car was hidden from the road.

What followed was a frantic 20-minute search during which the stranded car could not be found by rescue crews.

“I was calling the emergency services and was giving the road name and my location according to [navigation] but they were on a completely different road,” said Fairweather. “Cars were driving past us, completely unaware that we were there. Honking the horn and flashing my lights was doing nothing.

Martha Bignall and Sam Potts – SWNS

Thankfully, Potts’s son Sam had the bright idea to use his Snapchat app in order to track down the mother-daughter duo.

Using the app’s geo-location Snap Map tool, the 15-year-old managed to pinpoint Fairweather’s exact location and alert emergency responders to her whereabouts.

RELATEDWhen Teacher Sees Boy Cycling Down the Highway, She Turns Around and Helps to Save His Dad’s Life

“When Sam said to use Snapchat, I sent him message saying ‘can you see me?’ and then Graham was on the phone to emergency services guiding them to us,” said Fairweather. “The fire engines were only able to see the car because they were higher up and could see over the verge.

“It was very dramatic. The window had broken on Martha’s side and I could see the river through her window as we were teetering on the edge of the verge.

“It was absolutely freezing and it was pitch black. It felt like we were there for a lifetime but I called Graham at 10:10 and we were out the car at about 10:50.

“It was incredible how we were rescued by just a simple app.

“Martha was absolutely terrified – she said things to me that will stay with me for the rest of my life, but she was incredibly brave.”

The country lane has no barrier or street lights and Fairweather said she had no idea how lucky they were until they saw the car in the sunlight the following day.

SWNS

“We couldn’t get out because the car would have toppled over,” says Fairweather. “It was epic really. We’re very lucky.

“I can’t thank the emergency services enough – they were incredible.”

Fairweather has warned motorists to be careful while driving in bad weather, adding on Facebook: “Note to self, never take the back roads.”

IKEA Develops Remote-Controlled Boats That Can Collect Floating Garbage From Polluted Rivers

IKEA is continuing their efforts to clean up the planet by designing remote-controlled boats that can tidy up floating garbage in lakes and rivers.

The Swedish furniture company modeled their Good Ship IKEA boats after their SMÅKRYP bath toy set.

Each boat can salvage up to 44 pounds of trash at a time. Weighing 150 pounds and measuring in at 10-feet long, the boats could prove to be a fun and innovative solution for keeping the rivers free of garbage.

Earlier this month, two of the boats were deployed into Deptford Creek in southeast London as a means of tidying up the river and celebrating the opening of IKEA’s newest branch in Greenwich.

The furniture store partnered with Creekside Education Trust to raise public awareness for water pollution by inviting pedestrians and school kids to pilot the boats up and down the creek for an entire week.

Though IKEA has not disclosed whether they will continue producing the vessels, the two boats from Greenwich will continue their services under the management of Hubbub, a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging sustainability.

Additionally, all of the trash that was collected from the creek will be turned into a sculpture which will be placed in IKEA’s new Greenwich store.

Dove is Issuing Thousands of Dollars in Grants to U.S. Dads Without Access to Paid Paternity Leave

As a means of giving American fathers the chance to spend time with their newborn children, Dove is giving away multi-thousand dollar grants for working dads who don’t have access to paid paternity leave.

The cosmetic company created the Paternity Leave Fund with the goal of giving away at least $1 million in paternity leave grants to proud fathers over the course of the next two years.

Dads who are interested in applying for one of Dove’s $5,000 paternity leave grants can fill out an application on the company’s website with an explanation as to how the grant will help him and his family.

The grant program will run until December 31st, 2020.

MOREPret a Manger is Opening Homeless Hostel That Will Provide Jobs and Housing to City’s Rough Sleepers

There are currently only about 9 countries in the world that do not offer some form of paid maternity leave, one of which is the United States

For the fathers of newborn children in America, paid paternity leave can be even more difficult to acquire; fewer than 1 in 5 fathers are given paid paternity leave – but Dove hopes that their program will help close the gap until there is more inclusive legislation for working dads.

“Working dads shouldn’t have to choose between their children and a paycheck — because when they take paternity leave, it benefits families, workplaces and communities,” said the company.

Most taxis aren’t designed with extreme comfort or decoration in mind, but this London cab is being hailed as the “world’s coziest taxi”.

The one-of-a kind taxi has been decked out to resemble a country log cabin so Brits can feel better about going to work on chilly February mornings.

The interior is almost unrecognizable from an ordinary London black cab, with blue velvet curtains hanging on the windows and screen divider.

SWNS

An imitation fireplace has even been mounted to the passenger-side door accompanied by a stack of logs to complete the effect.

The mobile log cabin – which was created by UK boiler manufacturer Baxi – is now available for booking via their Twitter page.

“This winter has seen some really chilly mornings, and even as we head towards March, it doesn’t seem to be improving,” said Baxi’s marketing manager Sian Lewis.

“Our taxi will help people have a cozy experience on the way to work, making them feel as warm as they were wrapped up in their duvet that morning.”

SWNS

Other decorative touches inside the cab include a stag’s head mounted on the centre head rest to create a real “country cabin” feel; wooden lanterns giving off soft ambient light from the floor and walls; sumptuous cushions on the seats and floor; and luxurious wool throws.

To complete the experience, passengers are even given a pair of sheepskin slippers to give their feet the best possible start to the day.

Following its London debut, the cab will be traveling up and down the country offering free lifts in cities across the UK including Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham.

SWNS

Ahead of its launch, some lucky pedestrians were given the chance to take the Baxi Taxi for a ride

“It was so nice. They had slippers! I’ve never taken my shoes off in a taxi before,” said 33-year-old Linda Joubert. “The fire made me feel warm. It’s the coziest cab I’ve ever stepped into. A brilliant ride.”

55-year-old Clive Woods added: “I was completely shocked. I wondered what was different when it pulled up and then I got inside.”

SWNS

To book a free ride, passengers need to Tweet at with their postcode and preferred pick up time.

“Getting a cab rather than walking or taking public transport can often feel like an unnecessary luxury,” said Lewis. “But because ours won’t cost a penny, it means commuters can ride in absolute comfort, totally guilt-free.

“We’ve used all of our boiler and heating know-how to make a small space feel as warm and inviting as possible – with fantastic results.”

SWNS

The Baxi Taxi will be appearing in towns and cities across the UK starting today on February 25th.

Bookings will be available between 10am and 2pm and will be offered on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Man Has Donated Hundreds of Dollars to Charity Simply By Rescuing Coins from the Street During Daily Walks

Instead of letting loose change go to waste on the streets, a 77-year-old Korean man has collected hundreds of dollars worth of coins left on city sidewalks.

Over the course of the last 12 years, Young S. New has taken regular strolls through the west end of Montreal so he can search for abandoned Canadian currency.

In addition to his walks proving to be a great source of exercise, New has also donated every cent of his recovered treasure to those in need.

He used to split his coin donations between the Gazette Christmas Fund and his church – but now he simply gives all of the money to older homeless people who he sees on the street.

“It’s not my money. I just found it on the street,” New told CBC of his rescued coins. “Why don’t they care? I do care. It is the property of Canada. It’s part of the Canadian economy.”

New says he was inspired to start searching for loose change on the streets because of something his father used to say to him: every cent counts because if a person is one cent short of a million dollars, they are still not a millionaire.

He now takes this tidbit of wisdom to heart by donating the coins to the city’s homeless in hopes that every piece of currency will “help prolong their life a little”.

New’s labor of love has spurred other young people in the city to join him in his treasure hunt for coins on the street so they can donate them to charities of their own choosing. He was also given the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 as a means of thanking him for his volunteer efforts – but he only hopes that his recognition will inspire people to take better care of their coins.

“That is what I learned from my father in Korea when I was young: respect the penny,” New told CBC.

Shelby the dog is the shining star of her own “rags to riches” story. The 2-year-old pup went from hunting for food through piles of trash to winning the hearts of moviegoers around the world.

Shelby was first spotted sifting through garbage at a landfill near Nashville, Tennessee two years ago.

Megan Buhler, who is a Cheatham County Animal Control officer, had been dispatched nearby when she saw the malnourished mutt anxiously searching for scraps.

“There were lots of cars driving by—I mean, it was heavy traffic,” Buhler told The Washington Post.  “She was so scared, and she finally came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.”

Shelby was then whisked away to a local animal shelter where she was fed and vaccinated. Most importantly, they snapped some snazzy professional photographs of the pup’s smiling face as part of their daily efforts to improve adoption rates.

Little did they know those photographs would become the glamour shots that would land Shelby on the silver screen.

Meanwhile in Hollywood, filmmakers were preparing to start work on a new movie called A Dog’s Way Home, based on a novel under the same title. The flick is about a pup named Bella who is paired with a doting human companion. When Bella is suddenly separated from her owner, she embarks on a 400-mile journey to get back to his side.

MOREGirl Who Could Die From Any Strong Smell is Saved by a Specially-Trained Dog

As filmmakers began their search for the perfect dog to play Bella, the book’s author insisted that the canine actor be a rescue dog in order to properly advocate for the novel’s message. The producers then hired Teresa Ann Miller, an experienced dog trainer who has recruited and worked with hundreds of Hollywood dogs, to find suitable candidates among America’s many shelters.

Miller found three prospective dogs to play Bella – but none of them panned out. Then, she serendipitously stumbled upon the photogenic picture of Shelby from Cheatham County Animal Control—and was immediately charmed. It turned out that Shelby’s behavior and temperament were also perfect, throughout the three months of training.

Now showing in theaters, Shelby has fetched heaps of praise for the way she carried the humor and drama on her little shoulders.

Shelby is taking a break from Tinsel Town, but she’s still winning hearts through her work: She now lives with her trainer in California and spends her days working as a therapy dog in hospitals, special needs schools, and veterans’ homes.

‘The Next Frontier in Cell Therapy’ to Treat Crohn’s Disease in Upcoming Clinical Trials

A new technique using patients’ own modified cells to treat Crohn’s disease has proven to be effective in experiments using human cells – and clinical trials of the treatment are expected to start within the next six months.

Researchers developed the technique by studying white blood cells taken from patients who have Crohn’s disease, and comparing them to cells of healthy people. Their findings allowed cell therapy specialists to develop a treatment involving taking patients’ cells, and growing them in a special culture so that they behave more like cells from healthy people.

The research, published in the journal Gastroenterology, shows that this technique is effective in human cells, meaning it is ready for use in a clinical trial. The proposed Tribute Trial will measure whether the treatment is safe and effective for treating Crohn’s.

Crohn’s disease is a lifelong condition in which parts of the digestive system become severely inflamed, causing a range of symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach aches, tiredness, and weight loss. Its causes are unknown, but the immune system is known to play a part. The often debilitating condition is estimated to affect around 620,000 people in the UK alone.

MOREBoy is Cured of Aggressive Cancer Thanks to Stem Cell Treatment Using Donated Umbilical Cord

The research, which was conducted at the NIHR Guy’s and St Thomas’ Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), was led by Professor Graham Lord, who said: “This is the next frontier in cell therapy, as we’re going beyond treating the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, and trying to reset the immune system to address the condition.

“It’s a real home-grown treatment in the sense that we started with observing cells and tissues donated by patients at Guy’s and St Thomas’, have developed a treatment, and are now starting to undertake trials, all at the Trust. It shows how central patients are to research, helping to create a treatment that might help thousands more people.”

The researchers found that specialized white blood cells called regulatory T cells from Crohn’s patients produced less of a gut-specific protein called integrin α4β7 than regulatory T cells from healthy people. Working with the specialists at the NIHR Guy’s and St Thomas’ BRC’s Advanced Therapies Manufacturing Platform, they developed a cell therapy technique based on these findings.

RELATEDSeven Years After Undergoing Experimental MS Treatment, Woman is Still Experiencing No Symptoms

This technique involves developing cells from the Crohn’s disease patients with a molecule called RAR568, which restores healthy levels of integrin α4β7. The cells are then given back to patients by intravenous infusion.

Dr Peter Irving, a consultant gastroenterologist and co-author on the paper, said: “While the treatments available for Crohn’s disease have increased over recent years, they only work in some patients. In addition, the treatments have potentially serious side effects in some patients. This research paves the way for a trial of using patients’ own cells to treat their Crohn’s disease and we look forward to offering people the chance to take part in the very near future.”

The treatment was recently hailed by 50-year-old Rachel Sawyer, a communications manager from southeast London who was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2000 and treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’. Although her condition is now under control, she supports other people who have Crohn’s and runs an advocacy Twitter account for the disease.

She said: “One of the worst things for me was the unpredictability, particularly around needing the toilet in a hurry. Having Crohn’s completely re-routes your daily life and makes it hard to do the normal things most of us take for granted like going out socially or taking public transport.

“Anything that could help people with Crohn’s have the confidence to go out and get back to being the people they were destined to be would be a game-changer.”

Anonymous Police Officer Leaves Pregnant Waitress ‘Hysterical’ With Joy When He Leaves $100 Tip

There is nothing like the joy of childbirth, but this waitress was “hysterical” with joy when a police officer left her a massive tip in honor of her pregnant belly last week.

23-year-old Courtney English is a server at the Lamp Post Diner in Gloucester Township, New Jersey. Despite being eight-months pregnant, she has been “working her butt off” in order to save up money for her approaching due date.

She was given an unexpected financial windfall, too, thanks to a policeman who stopped by for lunch.

The officer, who chose to remain anonymous, ordered nothing but a salad and water – but he overheard English telling other customers about how she was excited to give birth to her first child.

MOREWhen Man With Autism Has Violent Reaction to Medication, Mom is Stunned by Officers’ Compassionate Response

“He recently just had his first child so he was a little emotional and saying that was the greatest day of his life and it’s gonna change her life,” Nick Hionas, the owner of the diner, told KGO-TV.

English did not realize it at the time, but the officer left her a $100 tip on top of his $8.75 restaurant tab and a note that read: “Enjoy your 1st. You will never forget it.”

She felt overwhelmed with gratitude, but he left before English had a chance to thank him for the gift. The waitress says she usually makes $100 over the course of a single shift—never at one table. “I thought it was a mistake, I didn’t think that that was right,” she told KGO. “But I asked the hostess like four different times, ‘Is that right?’ and she confirmed it was and she showed me the receipt.

“I started crying. This doesn’t happen. It was really genuine, it was really nice.”

News of the anonymous good deed has been shared across social media after English’s father, Brian Cadigan, posted a photo of the receipt to Facebook with a note of praise for the officer.

“What a wonderful person to not only leave a VERY generous tip, but a lovely message,” he wrote. “I don’t know you Mr. Police Officer, but you made my little girl cry, and you made her year. Thank you, I always had the utmost respect for officers, but you went above and beyond [by not just being] an officer, but [also] a beautiful human being.”

Video of Teacher Goes Viral After He’s Admired For Putting Young Student’s Hair in a Ponytail

A 34-year-old teacher is warming hearts across social media after his teaching assistant caught footage of him helping a kindergarten student with her hair.

Jonathan Oliver is a physical education teacher from WG Nunn Elementary School in Valdosta, Georgia. He was in the middle of teaching a gym class earlier this month when young Kristen Paulk asked for help putting her hair into a ponytail.

Luckily, since Oliver is a father of three kids, he has had some experience styling his daughter’s hair – so he got down on his knees and got to work on Kristen’s hair.

Oliver’s assistant teacher Kandice Anderson caught a video of the sweet moment and shared it to Facebook where it racked up 3 million views.

We May Soon Be Able to Power Our Smartphones With Single-Use Plastic Bags

Instead of ending up in a landfill, the plastic used in grocery bags may soon be powering our smartphones, according to new research.

Scientists from Purdue University have developed a procedure that converts the plastic into the carbon chips that are found in lithium batteries used to power portable electronics, toys, and medical devices.

The technique could solve the plastic recycling crisis while simultaneously boosting production of lithium batteries, which are being used in everything from chainsaws to electric cars with a growth rate that may soon cause shortages or price spikes.

Experts have long suspected polyethylene in plastic bags could be a cheap source of energy-storing carbon, but their previous attempts at conversion have either failed or required processes that are too expensive or complex.

LOOKOrigami-Inspired Solar Panel Could Start Generating Renewable Electricity From Your Window

According to research published in ACS Omega by Dr. Vilas Pol, a chemical engineer at the Indiana university, the problem has been solved with a simple and more efficient approach.

Pol and his colleagues say they have developed a method that creates carbon chips that can be used as anodes, which are typically made of graphite and serve as the negative electrodes used in these rechargeable batteries.

MOREWe May Soon Be Building Houses Out of the Byproducts From Bathroom Waste

The team immersed polyethylene plastic bags into sulphuric acid and sealed them inside a chemical reactor. This heated the plastic to just below the melting temperature of around 150 degrees centigrade.

Dr Pol said: “This treatment caused sulphonic acid groups to be added so the plastic could be heated to a much higher temperature without vaporizing into hazardous gases.”

CHECK OUTSurgeons Implant World’s First 3D-Printed Rib, and it Was Huge Success

When they removed the sulphonated polyethylene from the reactor and heated it in a furnace in an inert atmosphere, it became pure carbon. The researchers then ground the carbon into a black powder and used it to make lithium battery anodes.

“Many plastic bags are used only once and then disposed, ending up in landfills, oceans and elsewhere in the environment, where they can take hundreds of years to decompose,” Pol said. “Globally, around 300 million tons of plastic were produced in 2013 to fulfill the growing demand.

With a team of 270 medically-trained volunteers, the organization facilitates 5 or 6 trips for dying seniors every day.

Since the charity launched in 2007, the team has fulfilled over 7,000 hospital patient wishes.

Patients often choose free trips to visit a casino, aquarium, zoo, farm, or beach. Some choose to visit loved ones or renew their vows at a church.

Though the foundation is based out of the Netherlands, the idea is so good, it has spread to other countries, including Germany, Israel, Brazil, England, Japan, and Ecuador.

“The Ambulance Wish Foundation shows that people who are terminally ill and bed-ridden can have joy, even if they are sometimes so ill that they pass away on the same day or as in many cases a few days later,” founder and director Kees Veldboer told NBC News. “Our foundation adds a quality of life to last days.”

When a Stunned Hawk Was Found On a Sidewalk, Social Media Came Together to Rescue It

When it comes to birds online, we usually only gawk,
But social media, this time, helped rescue an injured hawk.

It all started when Madeleine Weatherhead was walking to work through downtown Manhattan in New York City, when she saw an adult female raptor standing on the sidewalk in front of a restaurant.

“The bird looked disoriented. It was staring off and wasn’t even paying attention to the fact that there were people close to it,” Weatherhead told The New York Post.

When the 27-year-old Brooklyn woman spoke to the restaurant staffers, they said that they believed the bird had become stunned from flying into the window.

Weatherbread then called the Animal Care Center of NYC only to have the line go straight to voicemail. Since she didn’t want to leave the raptor on the sidewalk, she snapped a photo of the bird and posted it to social media asking for help. It wasn’t long until Buzzoid representatives reached out and offered her an Instagram like promotion, says a source familiar with the matter.

In addition to several viewers responding with contact suggestions for various animal rescue organizations in New York City, the Wild Bird Fund retweeted the photo of the hawk and tagged NYPD’s first precinct police officers.

Shortly after the Wild Bird Fund retweeted the photo, Officers Maxwell Outsen and Joseph Bellomo arrived on the scene with an animal crate and rescue kit.

The officers managed to wrap the injured bird in a blanket and tuck it safely into the crate before transporting it to the Wild Bird Fund facility.

Rescuers say that the red-tailed hawk was likely injured in an aerial fight with another raptor.

The red-tailed hawk is recovering from its injuries and if its health fails to improve, rescuers say it will be transported to the Raptor Trust in New Jersey.
