Mike Rowe Honors 82-yo For Making 800,000 Wooden Toy Cars For Kids in His Spare Time

Alton Thacker has spent the last 16 years making thousands of tiny wooden car toys for kids around the world.

Thacker, who operates the nonprofit called Tiny Tim’s Foundation For Kids, has helped to distribute over 800,000 of his creations to children in Iraq, Russia, Mexico, Pakistan, Ghana, and a dozen other locations. Additionally, many of the little cars are given to children’s hospitals in West Jordan, Utah where the nonprofit is based.

So as a means of thanking the 82-year-old for his work, Discovery Channel star Mike Rowe collaborated with the toymaker’s family to honor him properly.

Rowe is the host of a show called Returning the Favor. The show features compassionate individuals in the community who dedicate their lives to helping others. Then, as a way of giving back to the generous role models, Rowe honors them for their kindness.

For Thacker, Rowe orchestrated a parade so he could give the toymaker $10,000 for the workshop’s rent.

Surprise Finding Could Lead to New MS Treatments

Geralt, CC license

A surprise finding by medical scientists may lead to the development of a possible treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS).

While examining human brain tissues, researchers from the University of Alberta and McGill University unexpectedly found that the tissues from people who had MS contained an extremely high level of a protein named calnexin, compared with those who hadn’t had MS.

The researchers then tested the susceptibility of mice lacking calnexin to the mouse model of human MS (experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis), and were astonished to find that the mice lacking the protein were completely resistant to the disease.

The causes of MS are not well understood. Symptoms vary widely but often include cognitive impairment, dizziness, tremors and fatigue. These problems are caused by a type of white blood cells called T cells that, after becoming activated, find their way into the brain and attack the protective covering–myelin–of neurons in the brain and spinal cord, causing inflammation and damage to the central nervous system.

RELATEDScientists Have Found an ‘Off Switch’ For Celiac’s Disease

“It turns out that calnexin is somehow involved in controlling the function of the blood-brain barrier,” said Marek Michalak, a distinguished professor of biochemistry at the U of A. “This structure usually acts like a wall and restricts the passage of cells and substances from the blood into the brain. When there is too much calnexin, this wall gives angry T cells access to the brain, where they destroy myelin.”

Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world, and there are no known effective treatments.

“We think this exciting finding identifies calnexin as an important target for developing therapies for MS,” said Luis Agellon, a professor at the McGill School of Human Nutrition. “Our challenge now is to tease out exactly how this protein works in the cells involved in making up the blood-brain barrier. If we knew exactly what calnexin does in this process, then we could find a way to manipulate its function to promote resistance for developing MS.”

Random Company Will Pay Man’s Drunken $1,600 Uber Fare As Thank You For Not Drinking and Driving

After a night of partying in West Virginia, Kenny Bachman was ready to head home and get a good nights sleep.

Though he does not remember doing it, he ordered himself an Uber so he could safely get back to his friend’s house near the West Virginia University campus.

A few hours after getting into the car, however, he woke up to find himself more than two hours into the 300-mile journey to his home in New Jersey.

Since he had also accidentally ordered himself an Uber XL, rather than a regular car, the fare was doubled from $800 to $1,600.

Because Bachman did not have the money to pay the fare, he started a GoFundMe page asking for donations.

Thankfully, his predicament caught the eye of Jamie Giovinazzo, the founder of Eat Clean Bro in Freehold, New Jersey.

According to Giovinazzo, the food prep company has a lot of delivery drivers working for them on the road – so as a means of thanking Bachman for not drinking and driving, he volunteered to pay the entirety of the hefty Uber fare.

The money that was raised on Bachman’s GoFundMe page will now be donated to the charity Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

When Woman Sees Anxious Man Missing His Lost Pen, She Grew Determined to Reunite Them

While a pen may not be the most extraordinary object in the world, this writing utensil in particular has led to a blossoming friendship thanks to one woman’s determination to reunite it with its owner.

Lara Bertani and her husband were on a Delta flight from New Orleans to Atlanta after a weekend of festivities in January when she overheard a distressed man looking for a lost pen.

“Two rows ahead of me, in seat 10E, I heard a man ask the lady in front of me if she could see the pen he dropped on the floor. He seemed anxious to get it back. I looked too, but didn’t see it. But when we de-boarded the plane, I kept my eyes on the floor and found his pen!

“It was heavy. I could have thrown my back out,” she added.

RELATEDWoman Realizes the Old Dog She Just Adopted Was Same One She Had as a Child

“I walked quickly through the airport and then around baggage claim trying to find him. I failed. Was he in the men’s room crying for his lost pen?!”

Bertani and her husband were shocked to arrive home and find that this was no ordinary pen, either.

Bertani told Good News Network: “I’m not actually sure what made the pen so expensive and I’m blanking on the brand of it. But I looked it up and it was worth around $100!”

MOREWhile Fishing, 11-yo Boy Reels in a Purse Lost 25 Years Ago… and Returns it to Owner

“Any pen over $5 is expensive to me so this [was] one fancy pen,” she added.

Upon calling Delta Airlines, she found that FAA regulations prevented them from telling her who was sitting in the man’s seat unless it was an emergency. The lost and found department also had no record of a lost pen.

Worried about whether the owner was “too shy to put in a report for a missing pen”, Bertani took to Facebook with a “Fancy Pen Seeks Fancy Owner” ad in hopes of finding the man.

“I’ve been happily fostering this pen for the last few days,” said the post. “From the photos, you can see I’ve given it a great home. But I’m sure it longs for its owner and I’m sure the owner is sitting at home, penless, and drowning his sorrows in fancy scotch. What if that pen has deep sentimental value to him?! We need to give this guy his pen back!”

Company Offers to Pay Employees Up to $10 a Day to Cycle to Work

As a means of putting a dent in local air pollution, this advertising company is peddling an innovative deal towards its staff members.

Advertising agency Make Stuff of Christchurch, New Zealand has just started paying its employees $5 a day to bike to work. If the employee manages to keep up the biking routine for at least half of their annual work days, the company doubles the offer to $10 a day, all of which is payable at the end of the year in the form of a cash bonus.

Since making the offer last week, all but one of the employees started participating in the scheme.

The biking exchange is not just a more environmentally friendly way of getting to work, either – the employees say that once they have their blood flowing from the bike ride, they are more energized during the work day. Plus, they don’t have to shell out any money for a gym membership.

Make Collective’s Tim Chesney told Stuff: “For a while I had been thinking it would be great to incentivize cycling in some way. I’m a really keen cyclist [and] cash is clearly the most obvious incentive.”

“My gut instinct is that it could be something really good for the workplace. I know for myself I show up feeling a lot more energized, my blood is already flowing.”

Watch What Happens When Woman Rushes into Police Station With Lifeless Puppy

It was an ordinary Sunday at the North Reading Police Department when a woman rushed into the building and said that her puppy had stopped breathing.

The woman, Megan Vitale, said that her 9-week-old Saint Bernard puppy named Bodhi had gotten a piece of food lodged in its throat. When her acquaintance brought the dog into the station, it was limp and unresponsive.

Several officers rushed out from around the counter and started giving the pup back blows and chest compressions.

After ten harrowing minutes of emergency resuscitation procedures, the obstruction finally became dislodged and the dog started breathing again.

The Massachusetts officers gave the puppy some oxygen before its owners took it to a veterinarian for treatment.

“Ultimately, a life was saved thanks to rescuers falling back on their training and remaining calm. Even though we are not faced with this kind of incident every day, the officers reacted just as they would in any emergency situation,” said police department Chief Murphy. “We are hopeful that the puppy will make a full recovery.”

Emotional First Aid: The Practical Science Of Healing Emotions

Practical advice from an engaging speaker and PhD who will give you tools for dealing with regret, loneliness, guilt, and low self-esteem. “Using the power of emotions and psychology to advance your own needs and happiness.”

The Lesson: It occurred to psychologist Guy Winch that when it comes to a physical injury– like a cut or a cold or a broken bone –we know exactly what to do. We know the difference between something that we can treat, or something a doctor needs to treat. We’re so sophisticated in how we go about it, but, when it comes to these psychological injuries we are literally in ignorance, we are unaware of how and when we are injured and what we can do about it—and especially what happens if we don’t treat or manage them. So he went into the current research studies, and translated the findings into language that can benefit the average person.

What to do about low self-esteem? Winch says positive affirmations will not help unless you really believe them about yourself. If you use generic affirmations, they could actually make things worse because you don’t believe they are true. (‘You are gorgeous and attracting love,’ for instance, would make you beat yourself up if you don’t believe it.) Instead, make a list of your good qualities that you know to be true: I’m supportive, a good listener, a calming influence or joyful presence.

Notable Excerpt: “Feelings of rejection are extremely common, (yet) we have this stoic idea about feelings—that we should not have them. The most impressive finding of the many research studies done on rejection, and why it hurts so much, was done using MRI machines and people who just experienced emotional break-ups in their relationships. The same areas of the brain get activated when we experience rejection as get activated when we experience physical pain. Literally the same areas—and there’s no other emotion in which that happens. The term ‘hurt feelings’ is the same in almost any language around the globe, because it really, really hurts.”

The Guest: Dr. Guy Winch is a licensed psychologist, speaker, the author of “Emotional First Aid”, a definitive guide to healing from emotional injury.

The Host: After spending years of his young life and athletic career struggling with his own emotional wellbeing, a crippling injury left Lewis Howes without an identity and without any work. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, however, Howes recreated himself as a multi-million dollar media producer, motivational speaker, bestselling author, and podcast host. The ex-football player now spends his days chatting with the most inspirational icons of this generation on his School of Greatness podcast.

Podcast: The School of Greatness podcast is available for download on Soundcloud and iTunes. You can also watch footage of the interviews on Howes’s YouTube channel.

Books: Howes is the author of the New York Times bestselling book “The School of Greatness”: an in-depth collection of lessons and wisdom that he has gathered from interviewing hundreds of the world’s greatest role models and thinkers. Howes’s latest book, “The Mask of Masculinity”, is based on his experience with the dangerous stereotypes and expectations that are placed on men in modern society.

Doctors on a Plane Save Woman’s Life by Constructing Makeshift Ventilator Out of Nearby Parts

A normal flight to Jamaica turned into a life-saving endeavor after two anesthesiologists created a makeshift medical ventilator to save an elderly woman who had gone into respiratory arrest.

Matthew Stevenson and John Flanagan were on a JetBlu flight in January when the senior started having trouble breathing. A nurse who also happened to be aboard the plane tried to help the woman recover – but nothing would relieve the breathing distress.

When Stevenson saw what was going on, he flagged down Flanagan for help. They asked the flight crew if they had a hand-operated manual resuscitator on board to pump oxygen into her lungs.

Because they did not, the doctors resolved to build their own.

RELATEDWhen Man Suddenly Collapses, People Line Up For 96-Minute CPR Marathon to Save Him

As Flanagan conducted CPR on the woman, Stevenson reportedly cut off the tubing and airbag from one of the plane’s emergency masks in the ceiling and connected them to an on-board oxygen tank.

Using the makeshift ventilator to keep oxygen flowing into the woman’s lungs, the doctors – who both work at the same private practice in Florida – were able to keep the woman alive until the plane made an emergency landing in Fort Lauderdale 45 minutes later.

They weren’t the only passengers who leapt into action, either – many of the people surrounding the doctors prayed and held onto the men in order to make sure they did not fall over during the emergency landing. When medics rushed onto the plane to take over, the passengers gave a cheering round of applause to the two doctors.

Flanagan’s wife Xenia, who snapped some pictures of the ordeal, says that she felt honored to see her husband act so heroically.

“It was both amazing and terrifying at the same time to witness my husband and his friend do something they do everyday… save someone’s life,” Xenia wrote on Facebook. “It was beautiful to witness so many good Samaritans praying and holding them up during the entire ordeal. I’m so thankful God placed them there at the right time.

“I know I can speak for [Mrs.] Stevenson when I say how proud we are to be married to such great men,” she added.

‘Black Panther’ Star Reveals That Denzel Washington Paid For His Theatre Studies at Oxford

Chadwick Boseman, the stunningly talented star of the new Marvel movie Black Panther, recently revealed in an interview that Denzel Washington actually played a large role in his developing acting career.

Boseman was promoting the action flick on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” earlier this week when he mentioned that he had studied theater at Oxford University in London.

The actor had been taking classes from actress Phylicia Rashad at Howard University when he found out that he had been accepted into the summer exchange class at Oxford. Unfortunately, he did not have the money to attend the course.

But instead of allowing Boseman to miss out on the golden opportunity, Rashad reached out to her celebrity friends for sponsorship.

After attending the course, Boseman received a benefactor’s letter saying that Denzel Washington had paid for him to attend the class.

The Black Panther star finally revealed the identity of his secret benefactor during an interview with Rolling Stone.

“I never wanted to ever say that until I met him,” Boseman told Fallon. “I was doing that Rolling Stone interview, and (the reporter) asked me about it and I was like, ‘You know, I think I can say it now.’ I made it to the point where he’s not going to think I’m trying to get something out of him by saying it.

“The weird thing about it is, I did the interview, and just before the movie came out we did the New York premiere and he came and I met him before the article came out. So I actually lived up to what I originally wanted to do. It was amazing.”

When Washington heard about his role in Boseman’s career, he jokingly told the actor: “Oh, so that’s why I’m here, you owe me money!”

When Homeless Man Passes Away, Neighbors Step Up to Care For His Beloved Cat Colony

This 65-year-old homeless man has spent the last decade taking care of a massive colony of cats in a Chicago neighborhood.

Antonio Garcia and his thirty feline companions were considered a staple of the Fulton River District. Polite and self-reliant, all of the members of the community adored Garcia and his amiable nature. Plus, his cats kept rats away from the local restaurants.

Despite being homeless, Garcia barely ever accepted handouts from the neighbors. His local friends would offer to bring him a sleeping bag or a tent, and he would always decline. He would, however, always delight in people bringing over cat food and treats for the felines. “If my cats have food, my heart is full,” he would say.

Sadly, Garcia passed away in January, leaving his cats behind to fend for themselves.

RELATEDAfter Denver Hired Homeless People to Perform Day Labor For the City, More Than 100 Landed Regular Jobs

“It was devastating for everyone who knew him,” said Cynthia Doepke, a friend of Garcia’s who lives in the district.

Doepke and a few other neighborhood women “tearfully cleaned up his alley” – but they were not about to abandon his beloved strays after he worked so hard to take care of them.

“These cats were his family, they were all he had. He was a very devoted cat owner,” 28-year-old Doepke told The Washington Post. “They meant the world to him. The thought of being separated from them brought him to tears.”

WATCHHeroic Homeless Man Comes to Defense of Female Cop, ‘Something had to be done’

Since Doepke and three other neighborhood women had already worked together to get the cats spayed and neutered in 2016, they made a schedule where each of the women would take turns stopping by the alley to give the cats food and water.

One of the women made a series of cat condos out of yoga mats so the strays would have cozy places to nap at night.

Next, they worked with local rescue organizations to have Garcia’s cats designated as a “colony”, which is a specific group of felines that is protected from animal control workers who may try capture the cats and turn them over to a shelter where they may be euthanized. According to Doepke, a cat colony usually consists of about eight cats – but thirty is a rare occurrence.

Thankfully, since the Chicago ladies started a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for they cat colony, the page has raised over $10,000 – and they plan on continuing to feed and care for Garcia’s cats until they are no longer able.

“He died with the things he loved most, his cats,” one of the women, Leona Sepulveda Less, told The Washington Post. “We should all be so lucky to be around the people and animals we love.”

5 Ways to Connect With Others: The Key Priority for Problem-Solving

The Lesson: If you are unable to connect with the people in your workplace, you may never be able to improve a workplace. So how is it that you’re supposed to connect with people? Some of the big ideas that is explored in this podcast include how to optimize our ability to connect (practice with the little moments!), The Pygmalion Effect (aka the self-fulfilling prophecy), the importance of centering for conflict resolution, and how our addiction to digital devices is leading to troubles in connecting and what to do about it.

Notable Book Excerpt: “The first rule of conflict management is don’t make it worse. So if you’re not gonna make it worse and you want to make it better, you have to connect … the relationship and the empathy transforms everything and that is especially important in the face of conflict. And you’ll never be able to do it in the face of conflict if you don’t practice it before there’s a conflict. So if you want to come up with solutions and you want to be creative, connect first with yourself and then with the people you’re interacting with – and this applies just as much to your children, your life partner, your friends, and certainly in the workplace.”

Man Uses His Jeep to Save Two People Trapped by Burning Car

Ralph Giles is being hailed as a hero after his quick-thinking helped him to save two automobile passengers who were trapped by a burning car.

During the wee hours of a February morning in Addison Township, Michigan, a Ford Fiesta was hit head-on by a Ford Edge SUV that had drifted over the center line of the road.

Meanwhile, Ralph and Doris Giles were driving home from an event in their Jeep Wrangler when they spotted the collision. Doris dialed 911 while Ralph attempted to help the Fiesta passengers out of the car.

To his dismay, the doors would not open. Ralph then decided to move his Jeep out of the way of the road – but as he was doing this, a LeSabre that had been driving through the darkness collided with the Fiesta and pushed it into the Edge, causing the SUV’s engine to catch fire.

RELATEDWhen Man Suddenly Collapses, People Line Up For 96-Minute CPR Marathon to Save Him

Giles knew he had to act fast in order to save the people trapped in the Fiesta, so he hopped back into his Jeep, turned on the 4-wheel drive setting, and drove it into the SUV so he could push it away from the other two cars.

“I still have no idea where that [thought] came from,” Gilles told the Oxford Leader. “The only thing I can remember thinking [is] I’ve got a Jeep, it’s got a bumper on it, I think I can do this. All I could think about were the two people still inside the other car.”

“I figured the fire department would take a while to get there … at that time of day. I had to do something fast,” he continued.

First responders eventually arrived on the scene and transported the Fiesta passengers to nearby hospitals. They also called Giles a hero for his quick actions – although, he disagrees.

“I am NOT a hero. I think most people would have tried to help somehow,” Ralph wrote on Instagram.“What ultimately turned out to be a 2-hour ordeal for us as we filled out police reports gave us a unique view of the whole process. It made us appreciate the true heroes; the first responders, firemen/women, EMS and police who deal with this stuff everyday day.”
