World’s First Battery-free Phone Could Spell the End of Charging Cables and Dead Batteries

Say goodbye to frayed charging cables, and say hello to endless battery life.

That’s because researchers at the University of Washington have just constructed the world’s first battery-free phone.

The phone is powered by a few microwatts of ambient radio signals and light that are harvested from the surrounding area.

By eliminating the need for phones to convert analog sound into digital data, researchers were able to create a device that required little to no energy to perform basic functions. Additionally, the phone is only constructed out of cheap, off-the-shelf parts, and a circuitboard.

The team was also able to make Skype calls on the phone, proving that it could be used to contact a base station.

“We’ve built what we believe is the first functioning cellphone that consumes almost zero power,” said the study’s co-author Shyam Gollakota. “To achieve the really, really low power consumption that you need to run a phone by harvesting energy from the environment, we had to fundamentally rethink how these devices are designed.”

The current prototype only performs the basic functions of sending and receiving calls, and transmitting speech. The phone conveys speech by detecting the vibrations of the speaker’s voice and translating the words into analog data, rather than digital.

“The cellphone is the device we depend on most today. So if there were one device you’d want to be able to use without batteries, it is the cellphone,” said faculty lead Joshua Smith, professor in both the Allen School and UW’s Department of Electrical Engineering. “The proof of concept we’ve developed is exciting today, and we think it could impact everyday devices in the future.”

While the prototype currently needs a base station within 31 feet in order to operate, the team is next looking to integrate the technology into WiFi infrastructure.

“You could imagine in the future that all cell towers or Wi-Fi routers could come with our base station technology embedded in it,” said co-author Vamsi Talla. “And if every house has a WiFi router in it, you could get battery-free cellphone coverage everywhere.”

Johnnie Phillips used to suffer through the 2-hour walk to and from work every day – but not anymore, thanks to a compassionate customer.

Johnnie is a father of three who works at a Circle K gas station in Springfield, Illinois. Despite having to work 10-hour shifts, he still braves the tedious walks to his job through heat and high weather.

Jim Copeland, who works for a postal service contractor, always stops by the gas station to pick up a snack on his way to work every night.

After several months of chatting with the attendant, Copeland found out about Phillips’s lack of transportation.

Eager to help his favorite Circle K cashier, Copeland found a bike for sale on Craigslist. Then, he presented the gift to Phillips over the weekend.

When Copeland placed the gift into Phillips’s outstretched arm, the attendant couldn’t contain his excitement.

Phillips teared up, laughing gleefully, and took the bike for a spin around the parking lot. Though he’s a grown man and father, he still looked as happy as a kid on Christmas morning.

“I wanted to get him something special,” Copeland told Inside Edition. “He’s a go-getter.”

The more homeless pets that users take care of, the more “Teddy Points” they earn. Donors can then share their scores on social media to encourage friends into participating.

Since animal shelters have started connecting to the platform, they found that pets are more likely to find homes, and rescue organizations are more likely to find sponsorship. Pair that with the amount of users who get to benefit from watching their money help cute animals, and the technology really creates a win-win situation.

Teddy Food was first created when Pavel and Varya Kotosova were taking their dog Teddy for a walk outside of their home in Moscow. While on their leisurely stroll, Teddy ended up leading his humans to an injured dog who was abandoned in the wild.

“Teddy ran into the bushes and began to bark. Then he ran back to us. Then back into the bushes. And he did it until we got there,” 25-year-old Pavel told Good News Network.

After taking the dog to the shelter, Pavel and 24-year-old Varya realized that even though they knew the pup was in good hands, they wanted to know what would happen to her in the future.

“The dog had a broken leg and had wounds,” added Pavel. “Fortunately, our friends took the dog home [from the shelter].”

Teddy Food has since connected to 7 shelters in Russia, but they plan on expanding further into the USA, Japan, Germany, the UK, Austria, Australia, and others. The company currently has a Kickstarter that will be raising funds over the summer for their international expansion and the creation of a mobile app.

“Our mission is to make supporting homeless pets as easy as watching a YouTube video,” says Pavel. “We want to make it possible for anyone to help with just a few clicks. We want there to be more true heroes saving our little brother’s lives every day!”

France Plans to Eliminate Coal by 2022 and Petrol Cars by 2040

French representatives have just announced plans to ban the use of petrol and diesel fueled cars by 2040.

The decision was released just one day after Swedish automotive company Volvo announced that they would only be producing electric and hybrid vehicles starting in 2019.

In order to encourage the conversion to clean energy vehicles, poorer French citizens will be given premiums that will allow them to trade their petrol-powered car for a cleaner alternative.

France is one of several countries that have already announced plans to ban the use of petrol and diesel cars in accordance with the Paris Agreement. Norway, whose automotive market is already occupied by 36% electric vehicles, plans on exclusively selling clean vehicles by 2025.

India has also announced efforts to eliminate petrol and diesel cars by 2030. In order to ensure the automotive electricity is coming from a clean grid, the nation’s government is investing in the construction of 10 new alternative energy plants to replace their heavy dependence on coal.

The initiative is just one of the green energy solutions employed by Nicolas Hulot – France’s new ecology minister – to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement. Another of the proposals set by Hulot was ending the use of coal-generated electricity by 2022. These actions are all part of the country’s ambitious plan to become carbon neutral by 2050.

Environmental benefits aside, the ban on fossil fuels will also save tons of hazardous chemicals from clogging the atmospheres of French cities.

According to Sherry Boschert, author of Plug-in Hybrids: The Cars that Will Recharge America, using hybrids and electric cars that draw power from a main grid drastically reduce the amount of nitrous oxide released into the air by 32% to 99%. Nitrogen oxides have been shown to have extremely dangerous effects on people’s respiratory health, as well as the environment. Electric vehicles that draw power from a coal-fueled main grid also still manage to reduce CO2 from the atmosphere by anywhere from 17% to 77%, depending on the area.

In addition to Hulot’s plans for clean energy vehicles, the French administration also plans on banning the importation of palm oil and unsustainably grown soya. Both are large contributors of deforestation in the Amazon and Congo, which amounts to roughly 10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The nation of India has just broken their own world record by planting 66 million trees in just 12 short hours.

Over 1.5 million volunteers gathered together on Sunday to plant the saplings by the Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh. Representatives from Guinness World Records who attended the event are expected to register the achievement soon.

The record-breaking bid was organized in accordance with the country’s climate change goals under the Paris Agreement.

The nation had promised to spend $6 billion on reforesting 12% of its lands, boosting forest cover by 2030. Since the top four of the most polluted cities in the world by particulate matter concentration are all in India, the forestry will hopefully reduce the country’s amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

Seven months previously, volunteers throughout Uttar Pradesh planted 49.3 million saplings, smashing the previous world record of 850,000 trees set by Pakistan in 2013.

Detroit Just Hired 8,000 Youths for Summer Jobs

Over 8,000 Detroit youths will be receiving paychecks this summer for their work with the city.

Mayor Mike Duggan, who announced the achievement earlier this week, says that the jobs are more than just a means of making money – they also provide valuable work experience and meaningful employment to thousands of city youngsters.

8,127 kids out of 12,000 applicants were hired by the city through the Grow Detroit’s Young Talent program for six weeks of summer employment.

The young workers will be earning $7.50 to $9.50 per hour and working roughly 20 hours per week starting on Monday.

Applicants were required to be between the ages of 17 and 24. Depending on their field of work, they will also be given the opportunity to earn certifications in areas such as medical first responder training, workplace safety, and culinary art.

The $10 million price tag of the program was paid for through sponsorships, fundraising, and private donations.

“We know first-hand the importance of providing summer jobs for our youth and how that experience can transform their lives and put them on a path to success,” Duggan said in a statement. “I am extremely grateful to the many sponsors and employers who joined with us to make this program possible.”

When Hannah said yes, he then turned to Ashley and asked if she would be his wife.

Needless to say, she also said yes.

“I was very surprised. Will is wonderful, but he’s rather humble and so this gesture blew me away. She was so happy, and all I could think about was how special this was for her,” Schaus told WXIN.

Compassionate Neighbor Subs in to Help Soldier’s Son With Yard Work

One of Brian Kelly’s favorite activities is doing yard work with his father.

So when his dad, who is a Captain in the Air Force, left on a 6-month deployment, Brian was heartbroken.

The 5-year-old needed some way to pass the time, but he didn’t want to do the yard work alone.

That’s why he ended up knocking on Dean Cravens’s door.

Dean would often watch Brian and his father hang out in the yard together – so when he saw the little boy at his door looking for a yard work partner, he was more than happy to say yes.

Every day for the last six weeks, Brian has knocked on Dean’s door, anticipating a day of fun in the garden. Even though Dean has a day job and a family of his own, he is always ready to spend time with Brian as a fill-in father figure.

While yard work may seem like a small gesture in light of what the troops do overseas, it is clearly no small gesture for the 5-year-old boy who just misses his father.

American rap artist 2 Chainz is being hailed for spending his Independence Day weekend in a rather unique way.

The Pink Trap House, which is a building that was constructed for a music video featured on 2 Chainz’s recently released album, was converted into a pop-up HIV testing clinic on July 4th.

Though this is the first time that the house has ever been used for such health-related issues, it has previously been utilized as a community center, church, and beauty salon for local residents.

2 Chainz posted about the event on Instagram, saying that visitors could get tested for free, as well as enjoy a host of games, giveaways, and Independence Day fun.

The event was facilitated by the Fulton County Board of Health in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as Atlanta AIDS and Test Atlanta.

“Inside the ‘pink traphouse’ something seldom shown, art, kids, music, good vibes, inspiration etc. The word trap is and was associated with a negative connotation,” wrote 2 Chainz on social media. “We will see after we get thru…”

The phrase “trap house” is typically slang for a building that people go to to buy drugs – but 2 Chainz is trying to turn the word around by using the Pink Trap House for community events and fundraisers.

And by the looks of it, he is off to a good start.

100-Year-old Still Volunteers For Charity More Than Anyone Else

Harold Hager is being recognized as an unparalleled charitable worker – and he’s older than any of his counterparts.

The 100-year-old has been putting in 20 hours of work at the Steuben County’s Habitat For Humanity every week for the last few years.

Despite his old age, he is hailed for working more volunteer hours than anyone else at the charity.

The World War II navy veteran reportedly took up his career in philanthropy after his wife of 71 years passed away in 2010. He started working for the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) to keep himself busy, and they ended up connecting him to the New York Habitat For Humanity facility.

He was honored earlier this week for his hard work – but since Hager reportedly has a goal of reaching the age of 105, it seems safe to assume that he won’t stop volunteering anytime soon.

Cops Answering Street Complaint Join in on the Fun Instead

Instead of shutting down the slip and slide at this neighborhood Independence Day block party, these police officers decided to join in on the fun instead.

The North Carolina cops were deployed to an Asheville Fourth of July party because of a slip and slide that had been constructed in the road.

The slide had been put together from scratch by some of the community dads when an anonymous neighbor believed it to be blocking traffic.

When the officers arrived on the scene, however, they affirmed that the slide wasn’t obstructing the road, as it was still narrow enough for cars to pass. They also asked if they could take a turn down the watery ride.

One police officer even requested a garbage bag so she wouldn’t get her uniform wet.

The video has since been hailed as a great example of building trust between the law enforcement team and the community.

Bald Eagle Found in Bad Shape is Making a Remarkable Recovery

This bald eagle is making a miraculous recovery just in time for Independence Day.

The bird was found injured and having trouble breathing in Washington D.C., earlier this week.

It was also unable to fly because of the thunderstorms in the area.

After it was rescued by the Humane Rescue Alliance, however, it has since become “bright and alert”.

Officials suspect that the eagle’s previous health problems were due to stress.

“Yesterday, the bird spent a restful day at City Wildlife and even ate a meal. Eating is always an encouraging sign,” said the Humane Rescue Alliance on Monday. “The eagle is being transferred to another specialty center for continued diagnostics, continued care if needed and to be flight tested.

“City Wildlife reports that it’s their hope the eagle gets a clean bill of health, so it can be returned to its home in Washington, DC and released,” they added.

Sikh Community Saves Town’s Fourth of July Celebration

When one of this town’s most beloved Fourth of July traditions was at stake, their religious community stepped up to help.

Due to the financial issues of Visalia, California, the city was preparing to drop its fireworks display because it couldn’t afford the festivity’s $10,000 price tag.

When they mayor of the city mentioned the dilemma to a local Sikh man, however, he said that the Sikh community would be more than happy to supply the extra funds.

“Visalia considers this to be very generous and helpful. We appreciate their show of patriotic support, as one of our newer groups of American citizens,” Visalia Mayor Warren Gubler told NBC News.

Thanks to the donation, the 120,000 Californian city residents were able to enjoy a dazzling fireworks display that they’ll never forget.

Man With Cerebral Palsy Lands Dream Job

Despite not having any control over his body, this man with cerebral palsy just landed his dream job in security at a busy baseball stadium

Keith Gieser recently started working at the Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida when the facility started hiring security personnel according to new Major League Baseball protocols.

The stadium, which admits over 4,000 guests during the spring training events, is no small venue – but Gieser has proved himself an exceptional addition to the team.

Gieser first landed the job with help from Work Opportunities Unlimited – a community-based organization that matches employees who may have trouble finding work to prospective employers. Coincidentally, Geiser has always wanted to work in security detail.

Assistant general manager Alex Inman says that while they were careful hiring Gieser, they were sure he would do an excellent job.

“We believe in opportunity for all but we also had to do our due diligence; Keith had to be able to do the job. We interviewed him, took everything into consideration, focusing on what he could do, and we hired him,” says Inman.

“A lot of people praised us for hiring Keith but this isn’t just a feel-good story,” Inman added. “We want everyone who comes to the stadium to have a positive experience and the safety and security of the fans, the players and coaches is paramount. We feel that Keith is doing an important job and he’s a positive force. He’s inspired our team for sure; he’s been a pleasure to have here, everybody loves him.”

Hillary Swank Steps Up to Save Tiny Pups Left at a Shelter

These babies may not have cost a million dollars, but they’re sure worth a lot to Oscar award-winning actress Hillary Swank.

Two golden retriever pups named Scully and Mulder after the dynamic X Files television show duo were recently taken in by Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue in West Virginia.

The organization works to find foster homes for shelter animals until they can be adopted. So, when they took in the 3-month-old hounds, they weren’t sure who would step up with a place to stay.

They were shocked when – after posting a photo of the pups to social media – they received an email from the 42-year-old Hollywood star offering the dogs a home.

With a little bit of coordination between the nonprofit and the actress, Scully and Mulder were shipped out to Beverly Hills to stay with their new movie mom.

In conclusion to the sweet story, Swank and the pups have reportedly been having a pawesome time hiking together on some local California trails. Though Swank plans on keeping at least one of the pups – while helping the other find a different forever home – she says that they are both the sweetest companions a girl could have.

“Fostering not only saves lives and allows more room for other animals in the shelter until they too find a foster or forever home, but it can also be an important transition to finding forever homes,” wrote Swank. “The grateful heartfelt love I receive from dogs when fostering is life-changing, not only for the dog, but for me.”

Congressman is So Happy Over City’s New Minimum Wage, He Whips Out Guitar to Celebrate

This Congressman was so excited over his city’s new legislation, he couldn’t help but sing a little song in celebration.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota) has been lobbying to raise the minimum wage in Minneapolis for years now – and finally, that dream has come to fruition.

On Friday, the Minneapolis City Council approved new legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by the year 2024, making it one of only a few American cities that have implemented laws for higher worker compensation.

That’s why Ellison took to social media with a video of himself playing a little tune on the guitar in anticipation of the new legislation.

“I’ve been marching for my 15 – gettin’ paid, now that’s what I mean. I need money. That’s what I want,” crooned Ellison. “The best things in life aren’t free – but you can give them to the birds and the bees. I need money, that’s what I want.”

In addition to the video, Ellison posted a reminder about why higher minimum wage matters for the city.

“Today, Minneapolis took a big step toward renewing the promise of the American Dream,” wrote Ellison. “‘The American Dream’ should mean that in a country this prosperous, nobody who works for their living should live in poverty. Yet today, working a full-time job at minimum wage doesn’t lift an American worker out of poverty – it keeps her in it.”

A recent survey showed that the average 2-bedroom home in Minneapolis cost roughly $2,000 a month – a whopping price tag for the 71,000 minimum wage workers currently employed in the city.

The first pay raises of the ordinance will begin for larger businesses in January 2018 – however, the deadlines for smaller businesses are set to be slightly more relaxed in order to ease the financial transition.

Arcade Workers Show Great Kindness to Overwhelmed Autistic Boy

When her 4-year-old autistic son became overwhelmed by the crowds at the local arcade, this mom was resigned to the fact that her kids might not be able to enjoy the games like everyone else.

But the arcade staff wasn’t about to let anyone miss out on the fun.

Stephanie Saad’s son Jordan is nonverbal, but he adores playing the video games at the Dave and Buster’s in Boston, Massachusetts. After attempting to go on a normal afternoon, however, the large amounts of people made him too anxious to enjoy the facilities.

Stephanie then sent an email to the event coordinator and asked what times were the least busy for the arcade, so Jordan and his twin sister wouldn’t have to worry about the crowds.

Much to the mother’s surprise, she received an email from the staff saying that they would be happy to open the arcade earlier so the siblings could enjoy the games alone.

True to their word, Dave and Busters opened the store on the morning of June 22nd just for the Saad family. In addition to allowing other family relatives to attend, the staff gave $15 gift cards to the siblings and set several of the machines to unlimited play mode.

“I cried watching both of my children being able to have fun, laugh and actually stay someplace that they both were having so much fun at,” wrote Jordan’s mother on Wicked Local. “As hard as it is for Jordan to miss out on things, I know it is equally as hard for his sister who also has to leave when things are overwhelming.”

“I think it is so important that everyone know how truly amazing the Dave and Busters staff are and also, what an impact they made on my special little guy,” she added.

25 Deserving Families Will Have New Homes, Thanks to This Veteran

A late Army sergeant and Purple Heart recipient has left behind an awe-inspiring legacy of philanthropy.

When Sergeant First Class Stephen Florentz passed away in December, he left his $2.25 million estate to the Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity – which is the largest donation that they have ever received.

The money will be used to build 25 homes for low income families in Oklahoma City.

Though there are plenty of Habitat for Humanity neighborhoods in the area, this will be the first community ever named after a donor – the Stephen Florentz Legacy Estates.

Florentz reportedly worked as a helicopter medic in Vietnam before going on to volunteer in Operation: Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia.

The sergeant received a Purple Heart award for his service and he later retired in Oklahoma. He then continued his service to fellow veterans off the battlefield by volunteering at Veteran’s Association hospitals.

Though it’s unclear as to which families will qualify for the housing, this latest donation is definitely the crowning achievement of Florentz’s compassionate legacy.

“He would be honored by what’s happened today. He gave his life for veterans,” the veteran’s friend Mike Bourland told KFOR.

After Days of Intense Search, Lost Dogs Return Home When They Smell Family Cooking Breakfast

When two mischievous pups dashed away from their owners into the wilderness, their humans were worried that they would never see them ever again.

Upon smelling their favorite food, however, the dogs eventually came home.

When miniature schnauzers Charlie and Theo were out with their owners Liz and Graham Hamson on a walk last week, the pups ran into a foggy forest and did not return.

The Hamsons hired rescue drones and organized search parties of over 120 people to search the surrounding area for the dogs. After 96 hours of searching, however, there was still no sign of Charlie and Theo.

In a last ditch attempt to find their dogs, the Hamsons started cooking their dog’s favorite snack – barbecued sausage – by the spot where they were last seen.

After camping out overnight, the Hamsons were shocked to see the dogs eventually reemerge from the woods.

“When they first appeared it was like a mirage. I could not believe it was them,” said Ms. Hamson, according to the Telegraph. “My husband ran up the hill to grab them as I was just shaking and crying. I could not function.”

According to the pups’ parents, the sausage seemed like a reasonable form of bait, as Charlie and Theo enjoy a cooked sausage every Sunday morning for breakfast.

They didn’t expect such pawesome results, however, until they were reunited with their beloved dogs once more.

Officer Adopts Abused Siblings After Investigating Their Case

This police officer went above and beyond the call of duty when he answered a report on a child abuse case in 2015 – and thanks to him, it had a happy ending.

Jody Thompson of the Poteau Police Department in Oklahoma was off duty when he overheard the police dispatcher mention a case of child abuse.

Since Thompson used to handle dozens of child abuse cases at the district attorney’s office, he decided to tag along with the other officers and offer up his expertise.

That’s when they found John Thompson, who was only eight years old at the time, tied up in a trash can filled with cold water. It was clear that he hadn’t eaten and there were bruises on his body.

Thompson now says that the second he laid eyes on the youth, he knew he wanted to look after him for the rest of his life.

The officer covered the boy with a blanket and took him to a state detective agency where they could take photos of John’s injuries as evidence against the abusive father. Thompson then took John to the emergency room and sat by his side the whole time.

While John was recovering in intensive care, Thompson became a certified foster parent so he could adopt the youngster and bring him home. In the very same week, the Thompson family found out that they were pregnant with their third biological child.

Seven months later, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services found out that John’s mother, who was in jail, had given birth to a baby girl.

When the newborn was only 24 hours old, Thompson adopted her too.

Though Thompson says he never planned on having such a big family, he has never been happier – and apparently, neither has John.

“John is amazing. He’s a straight-A student, on the honor roll, in the gifted and talented program, involved in the local drama club,” Thompson told CBS News of his now 10-year-old son. “That kid’s very resilient. He bounced back from this.”

Earlier last week, Thompson was given a commendation by the police department in honor of his compassion towards the two siblings.

“Jody’s actions as well has his families are second to none. The example of love and compassion he has shown to this young man and his sister is an example everyone should follow,” Poteau Police Chief Stephen Fruen said in a statement. “It’s men like you that make me proud of our law enforcement brothers and sisters. You are very deserving of this commendation. I am proud to serve with you.”
