Man Impressed With Injured Teen’s Work Ethic Raises Thousands

jakeem-tyler-facebook

This chance encounter between a customer and cashier led to thousands of dollars being raised for charity and a teen in need.

Cameron Nelson went inside a Chick-Fil-A restaurant in Avon, Indiana on December 8th to order a meal. He was bewildered, however, by the young teen behind the counter working in a neck brace and sling.

“We sneeze too hard and decide to call in, but he’s working like nothing’s wrong,” Cameron wrote on Facebook. “I asked him what happened – he said he was involved in a car accident, but he was working cause he needs the money and also wants to feed the homeless for Christmas.”

“I was amazed he was still working despite his condition,” he added.

Cameron created a GoFundMe for the 18-year-old, who was later identified as Jakeem Tyler. Though the original goal was only set for $2,500, an outpouring of support boosted the fund all the way to $45,000 in just 19 days.

Jakeem’s father, Tracy Tyler, was informed about the fundraiser two days after its creation – and he was amazed.

“I have only allowed the funds to remain in the account expecting the outpouring to die down, but the love you all have continued to send to my son is amazing,” wrote Tracy. “I intend to use all my parenting skills and guidance to help Jakeem lived up to the potential that I have always seen, and now the rest of the world has seen.”

Heroic Momma Hiked 26 Miles Through Heavy Snow to Save Husband, Son

karen-kline-youtube

After hiking 26 miles over the course of 30 hours through heavy snow and ice, Karen Klein is being hailed as one tough momma.

The 46-year-old triathlete, her husband Eric, and her son Isaac were driving through the Grand Canyon National Park on a family Christmas vacation towards Las Vegas when a blizzard suddenly struck the surrounding area. The family’s GPS kept leading the car down national park roads until the vehicle became stuck in the snow close to the North Rim.

Karen, who had taken survival courses at their home in Pennsylvania was confident in her abilities to handle the elements. She took what little supplies they had and headed out towards the main road in search of help – or at the very least, a cell phone signal to call for help.

MOREUphill Battle With Cancer Leads Man to Climb Tallest Peaks–with One Lung

She had already hiked 10 miles when she reached the highway – the signs, however, said that the road was closed due to the snow. More signs indicated that the park entrance was 14 more miles away.

Karen continued on, surviving only by eating pine twigs and drinking her own urine, since hydrating with snow can quickly trigger hypothermia.

The mother eventually found a cabin where she was able to rest from exhaustion.

Meanwhile, Eric Klein became worried over his wife’s absence and went out on his own to find cell reception. When he finally found a signal, he gave rescue workers their location and the family was evacuated to a hospital on Friday. The family is in good health despite some frostbite in their appendages.

RELATEDTeen Girl Uses ‘Crazy Strength’ to Lift Burning Car Off Her Dad

Survival specialists usually recommend staying sheltered in the case of being stranded, however the Klein’s were in much more danger due to the blizzard’s hazardous conditions.

“I kept thinking ‘this is not the way I’m going to go’” Karen told NBC. “I can’t leave my son without a mom. I can’t leave my husband without a wife. I’m not letting my parents bury me. I just won’t”

Google Maps Can Now Tell You Which Businesses are Wheelchair Accessible

wheelchair shadow-cc-zeevveez-640px

Google Maps is already known for being the most reliable method of modern navigation – and now it’s become an invaluable tool for people using wheelchairs or mobility aids like canes or prams.

The groundbreaking new update is the brainchild of several Google workers who have used their “20% time” to make their app more wheelchair-accessible. Now whenever a user clicks on a restaurant or venue, they will be able to see a list of the establishment’s amenities – including their accessibility levels.

RELATEDChild With Invisible Disability Creates Bathroom Sign With Go-Ahead from Government

The “20% time” is a benefit that allows the tech titan’s employees to use 20% of their time on projects outside of their main focus. Rio Akasaka, a product manager on Google Drive, has used that benefit over the course of the last year in order to develop the new mapping tool.

Since nearly one in eight Americans are reportedly living with some kind of mobility-related disability, Akasaka recognizes the need to create a more accessible navigation platform for everyone.

By American law, all public and commercial properties must be properly modified to accommodate those with disabilities – other nations, on the other hand, might not have the same policy.

This boy and his therapist’s booth will remind you of the amateur psychology doled out in a Peanuts comic – except this compassionate kid isn’t keeping the money he earns; he gives it to children who can’t afford school lunches.

Each Sunday since October, Ciro Ortiz – also known as the Emotional Advice Kid – has set up his work station in the New York City subway to offer emotional advice at $2 per five minute session.

The 11-year-old first got the idea for his entrepreneurial adventure after he was bullied in school. Because he was raised by parents who encouraged him to be kind to others, Ciro funneled his feelings into helping his fellow New Yorkers with their life problems.

On a typical day, this young shrink can make up to $50, which he always funnels back into feeding his classmates at school.

After already chatting with dozens of worried city dwellers, he’s received an outpouring of appreciation and support. Ciro reportedly has a knack for addressing anxious adults with impressively simple responses. During one December afternoon, he was approached by a husband who was upset that his wife had become a vegan.

“I told him that she didn’t get mad at him for eating meat,” Ortiz told the New York Post. “She likes to eat what she wants and he likes to eat whatever he wants so they’re just gonna have to deal with it.”

Ciro reportedly hears the most grief from his patients about how the times are changing and the world used to be so much better in the old days. His response? “Try to accept change. Everything changes. We have to change too.”

Drones Offer Groundbreaking New Protection for Wandering Elephants

elephants-and-drones-jonathan-konuche-biodiversity-and-wildlife-solutions

A new use of hobby drones have had revolutionary results in mitigating human-elephant conflict in Tanzania.

Elephants are notorious for wandering away from protected spaces and national parks in search of newly-grown crops. One hungry mammal can be devastating for a farmer’s crop, leading some to throw stones, poison, and attack the elephants. Some have even allowed poacher intervention in order to eliminate the threat of crop damage.

In a study published by several wildlife protection organizations, however, the employment of remote-controlled drones has had 100% success rate in effectively herding elephants away from nearby farms.

WATCHBaby Elephant Rushes into River to ‘Rescue’ Her Favorite Human

The research team deployed 10 unmanned aerial vehicles piloted by five trained teams of wildlife managers in high-risk zones. When elephants heard the sound of the machine, they consistently fled in the opposite direction of human settlements.

The cost of five teams controlling 240 square miles was estimated to only cost $15,500 for 1 year, and all drones remained operational for the duration of the study.

“We’ve stressed the importance of data collection throughout this project,” lead author Nathan Hahn from Resolve’s Biodiversity and Wildlife Solutions said in a press release. “There is sometimes a tendency to overstate the power of new technologies, and we wanted to fairly assess the utility of the drones for moving elephants out of crops and other areas. The results are very positive and show that UAVs can be an effective, flexible way for wildlife managers to deal with human-elephant conflict.”

Colombia Kidnappings Down 92% Since 2000

farc-rebels-cc-globovision

According to Colombian police officials, the number of people kidnapped in their nation has fallen by 92% since 2000.

The country used to be considered one of the most popular zones for kidnapping in the world, with an estimated 30,000 people captured since 1970.

Thanks to the recent peace deal between the rebels of The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia People’s Army and the government, thus ending their 52 year war, only about 188 people were kidnapped in 2016, showing historic new progress.

RELATEDPresident of Gambia Bans Female Genital Mutilation

Rebel forces were typically known for kidnapping police officers or military personnel, however they also would go on “miraculous fishing expeditions” which entailed taking lucrative-looking civilians and holding them for ransom, according to the BBC.

Under the peace agreement, FARC will turn in its weapons and become a political movement, similar to the path taken by the Irish Republican Army in 1998. The “ideas” that were iterated in the peace accord include serious agrarian reform on behalf of the government, and reparations for thousands of victims of the war.

Though there are still several political prisoners being held by the rebels, they say that they will release the hostages once peace talks begin their actual progress.

Tribute to Carrie Fisher, Beloved Actress and Author (1956-2016)

carrie-fisher-star-wars-screenshot

The feminist princess and protagonist of the Star Wars series has gone on to become one with the Force – Carrie Fisher passed away from cardiac arrest this Tuesday at the age of 60.

Earlier this week, Fisher was on a flight from London to Los Angeles when she reportedly stopped breathing. A passenger performed CPR while paramedics rushed to the scene and escorted her to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

Though her family reported her condition as stable on Christmas, she reportedly passed away this morning at 8:55AM Pacific Time.

Fisher wasn’t just the headstrong General Organa of the historic sci-fi series – since she took the iconic Star Wars role at the age of 19, she starred in dozens of films, such as When Harry Met Sally, The Blues Brothers, Hook, Austin Powers, and The ‘Burbs. Her books spanned from screenplays, to novels, to autobiographies, all of which displayed endearing honesty.

RELATED7-yo Star Wars Fan Asks George Lucas If Jedis Can Marry, Gets Great Answer

Carrie has historically used her platform to speak out about the importance of mental health, with her autobiographies detailing her struggles with bipolar disorder and drug addiction. Her most recent book and third memoir, The Princess Diarist, documents her time during the filming of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Anthony Breznican of Entertainment Weekly reportedly described the book as a “tremendous insight into the volatile heart of a young woman, seen through the eyes of her wiser, older self still seeking her place in the universe.”

Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill has only announced that he has “no words” to describe the loss of his space sibling. No statement has yet been issued by Harrison Ford, though he did post on Twitter after her hospitalization saying “I’m shocked and saddened to hear the news about my dear friend Carrie Fisher. Our thoughts are with Carrie, her family and friends.”

Yet another musical legend has joined the ranks of celebrities that have passed during 2016 – George Michael, British pop icon and philanthropist, died of heart failure at the age of 53 in his Oxfordshire home on December 25th.

Though fellow artists and fans alike have expressed their grief, many have come forward with tales of the singer’s generosity and kindness.

Richard Osman, creator and co-presenter of the BBC One television quiz show Pointless, posted on Twitter saying: “A woman on ‘Deal Or No Deal’ told us she needed £15k for IVF treatment. George Michael secretly phoned the next day and gave her the £15k.”

Sali Hughes, an English interviewer and journalist said: “I wrote in a piece ages ago about a celeb I’d worked with tipping a barmaid £5k because she was a student nurse in debt. Was George Michael.”

Several charities geared towards assisting children, the LGBTQ community, and cancer survivors also came forward with testimonies of the singer’s kindness. George Michael donated millions of dollars to nonprofits such as the Terrence Higgins Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support and Childline using royalties from his 1996 hit “Jesus To A Child”. His only condition was that his contributions were made anonymous.

Fellow musical collaborators have also come forward with appreciation for George’s personality – like Sir Paul McCartney.

“George Michael’s sweet soul music will live on even after his sudden death,” wrote the Beatles member in a statement. “Having worked with him on a number of occasions his great talent always shone through and his self deprecating sense of humor made the experience even more pleasurable.”

As well as being extraordinarily generous, George played a major role in inspiring James Corden’s beloved Carpool Karaoke series. George played James’s hilariously sassy friend during BBC One’s “The Late Late Show’s” Comic Relief segment in 2011, which eventually developed into a reoccurring piece.

James himself paid homage to his old friend on Twitter.

“I’ve loved George Michael for as long as I can remember,” James wrote. “He was an absolute inspiration. Always ahead of his time.”

Scientists Can Use Wires 3 Atoms Wide to Create Fabric That Generates Electricity

atomic-wire-stanford

This team of researchers used diamonds to create the tiniest wires ever – and the possibilities for their use are endless.

Scientists at Stanford University and the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have discovered a way to use diamondoids – the smallest possible bits of diamond – to assemble atoms into the thinnest possible electrical wires, just three atoms wide.

By grabbing various types of atoms and putting them together LEGO-style, the new technique could potentially be used to build tiny wires for a wide range of applications, including fabrics that generate electricity, optoelectronic devices that employ both electricity and light, and superconducting materials that conduct electricity without any loss.

MORESimple Blood Test Could Detect Cancer Ten Years Before Symptoms Show

“What we have shown here is that we can make tiny, conductive wires of the smallest possible size that essentially assemble themselves,” said Hao Yan, a Stanford postdoctoral researcher and lead author of the paper. “The process is a simple, one-pot synthesis. You dump the ingredients together and you can get results in half an hour. It’s almost as if the diamondoids know where they want to go.”

The needle-like wires have a semiconducting core – a combination of copper and sulfur known as a chalcogenide – surrounded by the attached diamondoids, which form an insulating shell.

Their minuscule size is important, Melosh said, because a material that exists in just one or two dimensions – as atomic-scale dots, wires or sheets – can have very different, extraordinary properties compared to the same material made in bulk. The new method allows researchers to assemble those materials with atom-by-atom precision and control.

RELATEDFirst Ever Quadriplegic Treated With Stem Cells Regains Motor Control in His Upper Body

For this study, the research team took advantage of the fact that diamondoids are strongly attracted to each other, through what are known as van der Waals forces. (This attraction is what makes the microscopic diamondoids clump together into sugar-like crystals, which is the only reason you can see them with the naked eye.)

They started with the smallest possible diamondoids – single cages that contain just 10 carbon atoms – and attached a sulfur atom to each. Floating in a solution, each sulfur atom bonded with a single copper ion. This created the basic nanowire building block.

The building blocks then drifted toward each other, drawn by the van der Waals attraction between the diamondoids, and attached to the growing tip of the nanowire.

“Much like LEGO blocks, they only fit together in certain ways that are determined by their size and shape,” said Stanford graduate student Fei Hua Li, who played a critical role in synthesizing the tiny wires and figuring out how they grew. “The copper and sulfur atoms of each building block wound up in the middle, forming the conductive core of the wire, and the bulkier diamondoids wound up on the outside, forming the insulating shell.”

CHECK OUT: Bold Trials to Kill Vicious Cancer Type is So Successful, FDA Will Fast Track to Patients

The cadmium-based wires are similar to materials used in optoelectronics, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and the zinc-based ones are like those used in solar applications and in piezoelectric energy generators, which convert motion into electricity.

“You can imagine weaving those into fabrics to generate energy,” Melosh said. “This method gives us a versatile toolkit where we can tinker with a number of ingredients and experimental conditions to create new materials with finely tuned electronic properties and interesting physics.”

Hero Patron Delivers Choking Baby in McDonald’s Bathroom

cathy-and-sean-jordan-youtube

Newborn baby boy Parker Jordan may now be alive and well, but his birth certificate doesn’t say that he was delivered in a hospital – he was delivered in a California McDonald’s.

Cathy Jordan went to use the bathroom while her husband Sean ordered pancakes from the cashier for breakfast. When she was in one of the restroom stalls, however, she felt the baby’s head and let out a scream of pain.

The mother was only 8-months pregnant when she went into labor, even though the baby was scheduled to be delivered by C-section in a month.

One of the cashiers, Nancy Jones, had been eating breakfast with her daughter April when they heard the scream. April, who happened to be a nurse at the Sarasota Memorial Hospital, dashed into the bathroom behind Sean.

RELATEDQuick-Thinking Teen ‘Befriends’ Couple to Thwart Kidnapping in Progress

Since the couple didn’t have any time to waste calling for an ambulance, April started delivering the baby right in the stall.

The delivery was finished in just 20 minutes, but things took a turn for the worst when the child arrived with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck.

April was able to loosen it just as paramedics arrived so they could resuscitate the baby with an oxygen mask.

“I had oxygen on the baby’s face, and he gave a gulp of air … Best sound of my life,” Sean told WTSP “To be sitting there, thinking going to lose your child and to hear the baby breath … the best feeling … changed my life.”

More Than 800 Animals Find Loving Homes Thanks to One Woman Paying All Adoption Fees

kim-pacini-hauch-and-christmas-dog-cc-mbtrama

This Sacramento animal shelter had people lining up for adoptions thanks to a local real estate agent intent on giving all cats and dogs a home for the holidays.

Kim Pacini-Hauch volunteered to pay for all adoption fees at the Front Street Animal Shelter from mid-November through to December 31st. Since her promotion – “Home For The Pawlidays” – began, over 800 animals have found loving homes.

In fact, the event has had so much success, the shelter has started importing cats and dogs from other shelters in order to meet growing demand.

“My greatest hope is that this simple concept has created a heightened awareness that you can find the pet of your dreams at any local shelter across the country,” Kim told TODAY.

MOREWoman Donates Entire Toy Store to Kids in Homeless Shelters

Since the fees usually range from $65 to $100, Kim’s final bill is estimated at $20,000. She hopes that her act of kindness, however, will inspire others to follow in her footsteps. A couple in Roseville, California has reportedly already made an offer similar to Kim’s at the Placer SPCA.

Some readers have criticized the safety of letting people take advantage of the waived fees and adopting pets without a price – but the Front Street Animal Shelter insists that they use the same screening process for everyone planning to adopt, with or without the fees. Studies also show that 94% of the owners report having strong relationships with their new pets even after the initial adoption.
