Homeless Man Becomes a Hero After Saving Woman Who Jumped From Bridge

Shane Drossard is being hailed as a hero after he risked his own life to save a suicidal woman earlier this week.

The homeless man had been camping out under the Washington Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota when he heard a loud splash at 2AM.

As he listened, he heard a woman’s voice coming from the river.

The 35-year-old woman had tried to commit suicide by jumping off the bridge. Though she survived the fall, she got caught in the fast-moving current below.

Drossard immediately rushed to her aid. According to an interview with WCCO, he got into the water, grabbed the woman’s hand, and used his other hand to anchor the two of them to a wall so they wouldn’t get swept away by the current.

As Drossard waited for help to arrive, he told the woman that she was beautiful; she had so much to live for; he was there for her; and he was not going to let go of her.

Finally, an emergency crew arrived on the scene and pulled them both out of the water. The woman was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Firefighters offered Drossard shelter for the night, but the humble hero insisted on going back to his camp underneath the bridge.

When WCCO asked him why he did what he did, Drossard emotionally responded by saying: “I just wanted to do something good for somebody.”

Lab-Grown Lungs Successfully Transplanted into Living Animals Without Any Complications

ThisisEngineering RAEng

A research team has succeeded in making bioengineered lungs and transplanting them into adult pigs with no medical complications.

The project was carried out by Joan Nichols and Joaquin Cortiella from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, who, in 2014, were the first research team to successfully bioengineer human lungs in a lab.

Now, in a paper available in Science Translational Medicine, they provide details of how their work has progressed to where no complications have occurred in the pigs as part of standard preclinical testing.

To produce a bioengineered lung, a support scaffold is needed that meets the structural needs of a lung. A support scaffold was created using a lung from an unrelated animal that was treated using a special mixture of sugar and detergent to eliminate all cells and blood in the lung, leaving only the scaffolding proteins or skeleton of the lung behind. This is a lung-shaped scaffold made totally from lung proteins.

RELATEDOn a Hunch, Doctor Gives HPV Vaccine to Advanced Skin Cancer Patient and Dozens of Tumors Disappear

The cells used to produce each bioengineered lung came from a single lung removed from each of the study animals. This was the source of the cells used to produce a tissue-matched bioengineered lung for each animal in the study. The lung scaffold was placed into a tank filled with a carefully blended cocktail of nutrients and the animals’ own cells were added to the scaffold following a carefully designed protocol or recipe. The bioengineered lungs were grown in a bioreactor for 30 days prior to transplantation.

All of the pigs that received a bioengineered lung stayed healthy. As early as two weeks post-transplant, the bioengineered lung had established the strong network of blood vessels needed for the lung to survive. After two months, the lungs had 100 percent oxygen saturation, meaning that all of their red blood cells were carrying oxygen through the body.

MORE8-Year Study Shows That Simple Treatment Can Reverse Type 1 Diabetes to Almost Undetectable Levels!

The researchers said that with enough funding, they could grow lungs to transplant into people in compassionate use circumstances within 5 to 10 years.

“It has taken a lot of heart and 15 years of research to get us this far. Our team has done something incredible with a ridiculously small budget and an amazingly dedicated group of people,” said Nichols and Cortiella.

Schwarzenegger Uses Tank He Drove in Austria to Give Kids Another Motive to Stay in School

Arnold Schwarzenegger is helping childhood dreams come true by encouraging kids to stay in school with his 50-ton tank.

When the bodybuilder served in the Austrian National Army back in 1965, he drove the Chrysler V12 tank. In 1991, he spent $20,000 to have the exact same tank shipped over to California.

While some people might be content to use the massive war machine simply for fun, Schwarzenegger is using it to motivate disadvantaged kids in the Los Angeles area.

If kids get good grades, stay out of trouble, and stay in school, he takes them out in his tank to crush stuff.

The former governor says that he used to motivate kids by taking them onto his movie sets – but since he stopped making movies in 2003, the tank is apparently a much better incentive for kids’ performance than offering them a tour of the State Capitol.

Burglars Break Down the Door and – Surprise – Face Off With a Huge Pig

Break-ins are not unusual in this Indiana neighborhood – but an unlikely hero saved a single mother’s home from being burglarized earlier this week.

The homeowner, who asked not to be identified, lives in Indianapolis’s east side. Luckily, they weren’t home when burglars broke through the door of the home.

Even more fortunately, the thieves did not take anything from the house – and police say that it is probably because they did not expect to run into the mother’s pet pig named Dumplin.

“The officers were guessing when the person broke in they were probably surprised I had a pig and were like, ‘We don’t want to deal with this,’” said the mother. “The cop was like we definitely think they got in and made it to where Dumplin was and thought, ‘Nope. We don’t want no part of this.’”

Police say there were three other burglaries within a two-block radius of the woman’s house, but since none of them had a swine-based security system, they were not as fortunate.

The woman says that she adopted Dumplin when she saw him at a rescue earlier this year – and it was easily love at first oink.

“The moment I saw him I knew he loved me instantly. He’s the perfect animal,” she said in an interview with WXIN.

Watch Neil Diamond Come Out of Retirement to Serenade Exhausted Firefighters

As a thank you for all of their hard work against state wildfires, musical legend Neil Diamond came out of retirement to sing for hundreds of firefighters earlier this week.

Over the course of July, there have been firefighters traveling from all over the country to help contain the Colorado wildfires at Lake Christine and launch relief efforts for the community.

Diamond, who is a Colorado local, took notice of their efforts – and despite how the singer’s recent Parkinson’s diagnosis forced him to cancel his tour in January, he insisted on getting back on stage to give an impromptu performance for the firefighters and their families as a show of gratitude for all their hard work.

RELATEDDolly Parton Quietly Gives Away 100 Millionth Book for Her Child Reading Program

“Now you have to save my house,” Diamond jokingly told to the crowd as he stepped up to the mic.

Before he launched into a rousing rendition of “Sweet Caroline”, the singer praised the firefighters by saying: “I want to take you all home. I want to give you a kiss. I want to make dinner for you. I just want to say thank you from the people of this area … I’ve been here for 20 years, and you made everybody happy.

“The heaviness on our hearts is gone … We thank you for making the trip and to our local guys as well,” he added.

Since news of the performance was shared on social media, Diamond has made sure to reassure his fans, saying that new music and recordings are coming despite his retirement from the road.

Additionally, Colorado firefighters have announced that the wildfires are now mostly contained.

Centenarian’s Wrong Number Call Results in New Best Friend and 10-Hour Road Trip!

When most people dial a wrong number, it usually results in a quick apology and a hangup – but not for Irene Wilkinson.

Several months ago, Irene accidentally dialed a “7” instead of an “8” for a phone number’s area code; it was a simple mistake that had a wonderful outcome.

The 102-year-old woman unintentionally called a woman in Tennessee named Rosa. Instead of hanging up, the two women talked on the phone for an hour and a half.

“She sounded like a nice lady, so we talked about our lives and children like old people do,” Wilkinson told KTVI.

The friendship didn’t stop there, either – the two women started calling each other constantly. For months, they would spend hours talking to each other on the phone.

Finally, Rosa became determined to meet Irene at the centenarian’s nursing home in Granite City, Illinois. Rosa then convinced her daughter to drive all the way up from Florida, pick her up in Tennessee, and make the 10-hour drive to Illinois.

Girl Scout Wrote Letters to Companies, Urging Them to Ditch Plastic – And They Did

A determined 17-year-old girl is proving that you’re never too young to make a difference and change the world for the better.

Shelby O’Neil is a young environmentalist who has written a dozen letters to company CEOs, urging them to stop using wasteful single-use plastic utensils – and a lot of them have listened to her.

After seeing California healthcare company Dignity Health run a commercial advertisement depicting people using plastic straws, Shelby wrote an email to the CEO explaining the dangers of wasteful plastics and why they should be eliminated.

The personal aspect of the email struck a chord with the company execs and they proceeded to drastically reduce their plastic usage. According to Mary Ellen Leciejewski, the vice president of corporate responsibility, the company has gone from using 8 million straws, plastic lids, and stirrers per year to 4 million. The utensils are now solely made available to patients in their 39-hospital system, rather than to visitors or cafeteria patrons, although the company says it is investigating using biodegradable alternatives.

RELATEDInstead of Tossing it Back, 5,000 Indian Fishermen Now Collect Ocean Plastic to Build Roads and Prosperity

“The fact that a 16-year-old girl had taken the action to write the CEO [was a powerful incentive],” Leciejewski told The Washington Post. “Maybe it was that it was a single person, one lone voice.”

Dignity Health was just the beginning, too – Shelby also wrote letters to the CEOs of Alaska Airlines and Farmer Brothers coffee, both of whom responded to her personally as well.

Instead of dolling out 22 million plastic stirrers every year, Alaska Airlines started utilizing stirrers made from birch and bamboo. Farmers Brothers is set to start using wooden stirrers. Shelby also traveled cross-country to meet with Starbucks company officials – and earlier this month, the coffee giant became the largest retailer to announce their own phase-out of plastic straws, which is expected to save over 1 billion straws from landfills every year.

While these adults are particularly responsive to Shelby’s outreach, she primarily started her environmental work amongst children. The teen from San Juan Bautista, California used the Girl Scout Gold Award project – which is the organization’s highest honor – to start the Jr Ocean Guardians nonprofit that specifically educates children on the importance of ocean conservation.

Despite achieving these enormous milestones, Shelby says she is just getting started.

“I was never really scared of reaching out to companies, because someone needed to do it,” she told The Post. “If no one else is doing it, then I’ll do it.”

‘Gilligan’s Island Crew’ of Puppies Rescued From Uninhabited Island – Safe and Happy

The only thing that could make the Gilligan’s Island television show more enjoyable is if all of the characters were replaced with dogs.

But even though that spinoff might just be a pet lover’s pipe dream, this litter of puppies are in the limelight for their stunning similarity to the 60s TV castaway crew.

A group of cute young pups – four boys and three girls – were rescued from an uninhabited island near Cross Lake, Manitoba earlier this week.

Several rescuers from the Norway House Animal Rescue sailed to the island with food and water so they could ensure the pups were in good health before transporting them to the mainland. The furry castaways reportedly ate an entire bag of dog food in a single day.

No one knows how the 4-month-old dogs ended up on the island, but they were only discovered after a boater decided to investigate the noises he kept hearing from the lake.

“He actually heard them the night before. He and his friend were out and it was getting dark already, and they heard some noises on the island,” Deb Vandekerkhove, director of the rescue organization, told CBC. “They took their binoculars and they couldn’t see anything but some dark shadows, and they heard a bunch of crying. They thought originally it was wolves.”

Rescue volunteers will be driving the puppies 310 miles (500 kilometers) south from Cross Lake to Winnipeg this weekend so they can be evaluated at the shelter and put up for adoption. The rescuers are also happy to say that despite initially being somewhat skittish around humans, the pups are becoming much more social.

As for how the pups will be named, Vandekerkhove plans on naming them after their TV show counterparts from Gilligan’s Island.

“As we meet them, we will attach their names based on their personality — you know, who’s the goof, who’s the boss,” she said.

Give Yourself a Break: New Research Says Kicking Back in a Sauna Has Surprising Health Benefits

Sitting in a sauna isn’t just a relaxing activity; this new research shows that it also has dozens of health benefits.

A new report found that sauna bathing is associated with a reduction in the risk of vascular diseases (such as high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease), neurocognitive diseases, and nonvascular conditions, such as pulmonary diseases, mental health disorders, and mortality.

Furthermore, sauna bathing alleviated conditions such as skin diseases, arthritis, headache, and flu. The evidence also suggests that regular sauna baths are associated with a better health-related quality of life.

The research team led by scientists from the University of Jyväskylä, the University of Eastern Finland, and the University of Bristol conducted a comprehensive literature review on the effects of Finnish sauna baths on health outcomes.

Finnish sauna bathing is characterized by exposure to high environmental temperature between 80 to 100 degrees Celsius (176 and 212 degrees Fahrenheit) for a brief period. In the study, the average Finnish person went to a sauna at least once a week, with the typical amount of visits averaging out to 2 to 3 times per week. Each visit usually lasted between 5 to 20 minutes.

RELATEDMost People Don’t Get Enough Vitamin D, But This App Can Fix That

Findings from this review, which were published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, suggest that the health benefits of sauna bathing are linked to the effects of sauna on circulatory, respiratory, cardiovascular, and immune functions. Regular sauna bathing stabilizes the autonomic nervous system, reduces blood pressure, inflammation, oxidative stress, circulation of bad cholesterol, arterial stiffness, and vascular resistance.

Just to name a few impressive figures from the review, over 2,000 Finnish men who frequently sauna bathed experienced a 66% reduced risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia; a 78% reduced risk of developing psychosis; a 62% reduced risk of incident stroke; and a 47% reduced risk of developing hypertension.

Moreover, sauna bathing contributes to beneficial levels of circulating hormones and other cardiovascular markers. The physiological responses produced by an ordinary sauna bath correspond to those produced by moderate- or high-intensity physical activity such as walking.

CHECK OUT: Drinking Baking Soda Could Be Cheap, Safe Way to Combat Autoimmune Disease, Says Scientists

The same research team has published several experimental studies demonstrating the beneficial effects of short-term sauna exposure on blood pressure, specific cardiovascular biomarkers, inflammation, arterial compliance, and cardiovascular function. The feelings of relaxation and promotion of mental health and well-being associated with sauna sessions may be linked to the increased production of circulating levels of hormones such as endorphins, the research team reported.

The review also reports that sauna bathing produces beneficial changes that are equivalent to those produced by physical activity. Indeed, the research team has shown in their previous studies that a combination of sauna bathing and physical activity might have added health benefits compared with each activity alone.

LOOKColorado Doctor Discovered Natural Way To Treat Common Vertigo

This review emphasized that sauna bathing has a good safety profile and can even be used in patients with stable cardiovascular disease.

“Sauna bathing, an activity used for the purposes of pleasure, wellness, and relaxation, is linked to a remarkable array of health benefits,” says the researchers. “It is a safe activity … [that] may be a remedy to the call for additional lifestyle interventions needed to enhance health and wellness, particularly in populations that have difficulty exercising, and also as an adjunct to exercise.”

Despite Local Racial Tension, Good Samaritan Leaps Into Action to Rescue Cop From Smoking Car

A Chicago man is being hailed as a hero after he jumped into action so he could rescue an injured police officer from a smoking car.

The cop had been driving through the city’s South side with its lights and sirens on so it could get to a foot chase when another car made a turn and cut him off. Instead of hitting the other driver, the officer veered his car into a tree.

An unidentified man was then seen rushing over to the smoking SUV, opening the door, and pulling the policeman out of the vehicle. Several other good Samaritans rushed to the officer’s aid as well.

Kevin Russell was in his car when he saw the scene unfolding. Touched by the man’s compassionate response to the accident, he filmed the exchange and posted the video to Facebook.

Since Chicago’s South side community is often mistrustful of police officers, the rescue has spurred an emotional response from social media viewers.

“People think that people of color and police don’t get along and don’t have a good relationship, but in a situation like this when something incredible happens, you do the right thing,” Russell told CBS Chicago. “You jump into action. This isn’t a police officer. This is a human being.”

We May Soon Have Batteries That Charge in Minutes Thanks to New Class of Materials, Study Says

Waiting for your cell phone to charge may soon be a thing of the past.

Researchers from the University of Cambridge have identified a group of materials that could be used to make even higher power batteries that can charge within a matter of minutes.

The researchers used materials with a complex crystalline structure and found that lithium ions move through them at rates that far exceed those of typical electrode materials, which equates to a much faster-charging battery.

Although these materials, known as niobium tungsten oxides, do not result in higher energy densities when used under typical cycling rates, they come into their own for fast-charging applications. Additionally, their physical structure and chemical behavior give researchers a valuable insight into how a safe, super-fast charging battery could be constructed, and suggest that the solution to next-generation batteries may come from unconventional materials.

RELATEDBook-Sized Solar Panels Could Power a Whole Home in New Breakthrough

“We’re always looking for materials with high-rate battery performance, which would result in a much faster charge and could also deliver high power output,” said Dr Kent Griffith, a researcher in Cambridge’s Department of Chemistry and the paper’s first author.

In their simplest form, batteries are made of three components: a positive electrode, a negative electrode and an electrolyte. When a battery is charging, lithium ions are extracted from the positive electrode and move through the crystal structure to the negative electrode, where they are stored. The faster this process occurs, the faster the battery can be charged.

In the search for new electrode materials, researchers normally try to make the particles smaller.

CHECK OUT: Dad Designs a Floating Drone That Could Prevent Dozens of Potential Drownings

“The idea is that if you make the distance the lithium ions have to travel shorter, it should give you higher rate performance,” said Griffith. “But it’s difficult to make a practical battery with nanoparticles: you get a lot more unwanted chemical reactions with the electrolyte, so the battery doesn’t last as long, plus it’s expensive to make.”

“Nanoparticles can be tricky to make, which is why we’re searching for materials that inherently have the properties we’re looking for even when they are used as comparatively large micron-sized particles. This means that you don’t have to go through a complicated process to make them, which keeps costs low,” said Professor Clare Grey, also from the Department of Chemistry and the paper’s senior author. “Nanoparticles are also challenging to work with on a practical level, as they tend to be quite ‘fluffy’, so it’s difficult to pack them tightly together, which is key for a battery’s volumetric energy density.”

The new oxides used in the current work have a rigid, open structure that does not trap the inserted lithium, and have larger particle sizes than many other electrode materials. Griffith speculates that the reason these materials have not received attention previously is related to their complex atomic arrangements. However, he suggests that the structural complexity and mixed-metal composition are the very reasons the materials exhibit unique transport properties.

WATCHBasement Inventor Uses Long-buried Device to Help Neighbor Breathe During Power Outage

“Many battery materials are based on the same two or three crystal structures, but these niobium tungsten oxides are fundamentally different,” said Griffith. The oxides are held open by ‘pillars’ of oxygen, which enables lithium ions to move through them in three dimensions. “The oxygen pillars, or shear planes, make these materials more rigid than other battery compounds, so that, plus their open structures means that more lithium ions can move through them, and far more quickly.”

The researchers measured the movement of lithium ions through the oxides, and found that they moved at rates several orders of magnitude higher than typical electrode materials.

Most negative electrodes in current lithium-ion batteries are made of graphite, which has a high energy density, but when charged at high rates, tends to form spindly lithium metal fibers, which can create a short-circuit and cause the batteries to catch fire and possibly explode.

MOREFirst Ever 3D-Printed Cornea Could Restore Vision for Millions of People

“In high-rate applications, safety is a bigger concern than under any other operating circumstances,” said Grey. “These materials, and potentially others like them, would definitely be worth looking at for fast-charging applications where you need a safer alternative to graphite.”

In addition to their high lithium transport rates, the new oxides are also simple to make.

While the oxides may only be suited for certain applications, Grey says that the important thing is to keep looking for new chemistries and new materials. “Fields stagnate if you don’t keep looking for new compounds,” she says. “These interesting materials give us a good insight into how we might design higher rate electrode materials.”

The results of the study were published in Nature.

When Girl Can’t Attend Katy Perry Concert Because of Brain Surgery, the Pop Star Visits Her House Instead

Grace Moores has been one of Katy Perry’s biggest fans since she was only 3 years old – so when she had to miss seeing the pop star in concert due to brain surgery, she was heartbroken.

Luckily, she has an adoring older sister who gave her something ten times better.

8-year-old Grace was supposed to see Katy Perry perform in Adelaide, Australia last week. Her hopes were dashed, however, when doctors found a 6 centimeter tumor in her head back in April.

RELATEDDolly Parton Quietly Gives Away 100 Millionth Book for Her Child Reading Program

So instead of getting to see her favorite musician, she was scheduled to undergo brain surgery to have the tumor removed.

Her 16-year-old sister Tianna then made a post on Twitter asking social media users to help get the pop star to visit Grace. It was retweeted over 20,000 times before Perry’s team got in touch with the Moores family saying that Perry wanted to stop by the youngster’s house.

Grace’s family kept the visit a secret until – on the day of the concert – Perry showed up at the Moores’ house.

“Katy came to the house in her big cars and it was really incredible, Grace was so shocked. She was just in awe the whole time and just speechless,” Tianna told BBC’s Newsbeat. “[Katy] said ‘Hi’ to everyone and she was just instantly trying to hang out with Grace, and asked Grace to show her around the house.”

With the help of the musician’s two guitarists, Perry and Grace sang three of the youngster’s favorite songs. Perry gave the family autographs, took pictures with the kids, and even posted a photo of Grace in one of the new concert teeshirts to her 71 million Instagram followers.

Needless to say, it was probably one of the best days of the little girl’s life.

This 10-Year-old Boy Just Beat Michael Phelps’s Most Enduring Swimming Record

Clark Kent Apuda may only be 10 years old, but he is making international headlines for beating one of Michael Phelps’s longest standing swimming records earlier this week.

In 1995, Phelps – who is one of the “most successful and decorated Olympians of all time” – completed the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:10:48. Clark just beat that time at 1:09:38.

He didn’t just beat Phelps, either – he won the race a full five seconds ahead of the competition and placed first in every event at the Far Western International Championship, which was held at the Salinas Aquatic Center at Salinas, California on Sunday.

“And that 100 fly, he broke that record by a second, which is a lot in swimming. But not only that, he beat his competition by over 5 seconds,” Salinas Aquatic Center CEO Dia Rianda told KOLR.

Are You a Master of Distractions, Rather Than Devoting Time to Your Passions? Here’s How to Change

The Lesson: Dandapani’s years spent training in a monastery are apparent from the moment he opens his mouth – and in this talk, he uses his wisdom to shed light on the disturbing fact that we readily give up control of our awareness to a multitude of people and things on a daily basis. He believes that most of us cannot truly concentrate due to a lack of formal training, for the key to mastering any skill lies in learning and practicing. Dandapani teaches us a highly effective visualization technique that utilizes a mental picture of a floating orb that drifts to various areas. This visualization simulates the idea of one’s consciousness floating between different topics. Therefore, having control over the orb allows us to rein in our drifting consciousness and attain the unwavering focus we have always strived for.

Notable Excerpt: “If I wanted to play for the Chicago Bulls or dance for the San Francisco Ballet company, how many hours a day should I practice? General answer is about eight hours a day, six days a week. And then I ask them, after six months, can I play for the Bulls? The answer’s usually no. After a year? No, but I’d be better at basketball, right? So imagine if you practice distraction eight hours a day, six days a week. What would you be good at after six months? Distraction. After a year? You’d be really good at distraction. After a year and a half? You’d be an expert at distraction, you’d write the NYT bestseller on distraction, TEDx would invite you to come and give a keynote on distraction. You’d get on stage, you’d be so distracted you’d forget what you were supposed to talk about. That’s how good you are!”

The Speaker: Dandapani is a former Hindu monk, current priest, entrepreneur, and coach and international speaker on self development. Growing up in Australia, Dandapani dreamed of becoming a monk since age four. It wasn’t until after he graduated university with a degree in electrical engineering that he found a spiritual mentor who clicked with him, and he relinquished his old life. For 10 years, he lived a life of serious personal discipline and training at his guru’s cloistered monastery in Hawaii. When his vows expired, he began a new life in New York City with the purpose of using his insights to work with individuals, companies and organizations around the world.

On a flight from Chicago, it was not the first time that Kimber Bermudez felt compelled to gush about how much she loves her students, but it was the first time people responded with such compassion—a perfect example of “the Friendly Skies”.

The 27-year-old teacher was on a Southwest flight to visit her parents in Florida earlier this month when she was seated next to a “kind man” who asked her what she did for a living.

Delighted to brag about her students at Carlos Fuentes Elementary School, she chatted about the joy she felt working with the impoverished kids.

“When he asked about the greatest challenge that I face, I was honest with him,” Bermudez wrote on Facebook. I told him that working at a low-income school can be heartbreaking.”

She praised all the wonderful teachers who delve into their own wallets to provide for the kids, whether buying school supplies or clothing—even toiletries.

The man told her he works for a company that often donates such supplies to schools, and asked for her contact information. Kimber was then stunned by what happened next.

A man who was sitting behind her tapped her shoulder and apologized for eaves dropping. He then handed her a wad of cash, saying, ‘Do something amazing!’

When she looked down and saw a $100 bill on top, she began to cry.

The sweet story didn’t end there.

The man across the aisle was listening, too. He said he didn’t have much, but gave her 20 bucks.

“As if my heart couldn’t be any happier the man in front turns around as well. He also handed me money, and said that he only had $10.”

“I said, ‘I’m not here to solicit money,” she recalled to The Washington Post. “And one of them said, ‘I know. That’s why we’re giving it to you. Use your voice. Use your gift of talking.’ ”

When she got off the plane and counted the money given to her by the anonymous man behind her, she saw it was $500.

“My heart is in complete shock and awe right now. When the world seems crazy there are always good people,” writes Bermudez.

She plans on using the money to buy new books for the students, as they often express sadness over never having anything new to read. She also says that anyone who is moved by her story can donate to the school network she works for.
