Man So Loved Fashionable Local Bird That He Wrote an Obituary About ‘The Goodtime Duck’

Death is no laughing matter, but it’s difficult not to utter a little chuckle when you read the endearing obituary that was written for Bonnie “The Goodtime” Duck.

William Linville and his granddaughter, Hailey Hickerson, had become good friends with the little bird during their regular trips to the park in Biloxi, Mississippi.

While Bonnie is typically a female name, they never actually had any idea of whether the duck was a male or female. The attractive little tuft of feathers on top of her head suggested that she was a female, but the duck was often seen beating up on a local male mallard that tried to edge in on her turf.

Regardless of Bonnie’s gender, the duck is now waddling through the waters of heaven. Hopefully, there is plenty of bread to be had in the afterlife, as that was how Linville and his granddaughter first befriended Bonnie. Linville and Hailey regularly hung out with Bonnie as they tossed little treats to the birds at the park – so when they realized that Bonnie had passed on to the great beyond, Linville felt moved to write her/him an obituary.

RELATEDDaughter Fulfills Dad’s Last Wish With Side-Splitting Obituary

“With a saddened heart I am reporting the passing of Bonnie ‘the goodtime duck’ of Hiller Park,” Linville wrote, according to the Sun Herald. “Bonnie was known by many bread throwers because of the fashionable feather bun worn on the top of her/his head. Bonnie was thought to be a female because of her high-fashion hairdos, but male mating tendencies describe him as being male.”

“During mating season, she, or he, would beat up on a mallard,” he added. “So I really don’t know what was going on. It wasn’t like Bonnie to do that.”

There were a bunch of other birds that were frequent fliers for Linville and Hailey’s bread trips. In addition to Bonnie, there was Pickles and his sidekick The Old Gray Goose. There was the pack of ugly ducklings who were buddies with Bonnie’s, as well as Copper – Bonnie’s best avian friend.

“Bonnie was retired, unable to fly, but a fast runner,” Linville wrote. “Bonnie was smart, always coming in close from behind to get that bread and avoid those agonizing seagulls.”

“We’ve been going out there probably eight years,” he said. “One year, we started noticing there was a different one. My granddaughter had started naming them. There was this one with a bun on its head, and she wears her hair in a bun, so we started looking for that duck every time. We’d call out for her, and she began recognizing her name. We’d holler, and she’d start running for the van.”

Since Bonnie passed away, Copper has been keeping company with some black ducks at the park. As for Linville and Hailey, they are content to pour out some bread crumbs in Bonnie’s memory.

“Bonnie will truly be missed by many. He/she was a good duck, and Hiller Park just isn’t the same without Bonnie,” Linville wrote. “Hopefully the good Lord has a rainbow bridge for ducks, with beautiful ponds and green meadows. We will always remember Bonnie.”

Father’s Day love doesn’t have to be reserved for the man who raised you. This story shows it can even be given to someone you meet in a grocery store—and it can transform their life.

It’s been nearly two years since people first heard about the unlikely friendship between little Norah Wood and 83-year-old Dan Peterson.

Peterson was grieving the death of his wife—and he wasn’t sure if he would emerge from his deep depression, or ever sleep through the night again.

But, then he met a 5-year-old in the grocery aisle.

She spotted Peterson and waved to the old man. She declared that it was her birthday, and demanded that he give her a hug and take a picture with her.

Norah was already a self-proclaimed lover of old people. She says she likes them so much because they walk slow like her, and have very soft skin. She knows they’re gonna die soon so she wants to “love ‘em all up” before then.

RELATEDWhen Elderly Woman Fell Ill, Her 7-Year-old Bestie Began Checking Up On Her 5 Times a Day

“She zeroed in on him like a missile,” Norah’s mother, Tara told CBS News.

Guarded at first, Peterson soon softened under her spell. With quivering lip and a tear, he told her mom why the gesture meant so much to him.

Touched by his heartbreak, Tara later found Peterson on Facebook and asked if they could come over to his house in Georgia for a play date – and they’ve been going there weekly, ever since.

“It’s remarkable,” says Tara. “I mean, I think a lot of people thought that it wouldn’t continue, but they’re pure magic.”

A month ago, Mr. Peterson realized just how much the youngster cared about him after she knocked on the door. When he opened it, she started hugging him – and she wouldn’t let go.

The little girl was distraught because it took him so long to open the door, and she was wondering if something happened to him

“She’s wholly invested in him,” Tara reports.

In her short life, she can’t remember being without him—and, since that fateful day in the grocery store, the old man can’t remember a year when he’s slept so well.

These Will Be the First 3D-Printed Homes That You Can Actually Live In

These strange buildings may look like something out of a sci-fi tale, but the future is now.

The community, being built in the Netherlands, will likely be remembered as the world’s first group of habitable 3D-printed houses.

There have been several other buildings constructed around the world using a 3D printer, but these are the first ones, the group claims, that will be ready to fully accommodate humans. 20 applicants have already expressed their interest in renting the homes, which will be ready for occupants next year.

The five Dutch houses will be built in a quiet district of Eindhoven in the Netherlands as part of the “Project Milestone” collaboration between The Eindhoven University of Technology and several other partners, all of whom will be making sure that the homes meet comfortable living standards.

The first set of houses will only be 1 story tall, but as the process develops, the designers believe that the concrete houses could be up to 3 stories. Additionally, as the construction process becomes more refined, the housing designs can become more intricate and personalized depending on the individual’s needs.

RELATED3D Printed Turtle Eggs Are Being Used to Crack Down on Poaching

The 3D-printed homes that made headlines back in 2016 used a similar design and concept, except they were not nearly as durable, since the houses were made using clay. While this did make them dirt cheap and ideal for emergency housing in poorer regions of the world, the same design could not be used in urban settings.

The price of the Project Milestone houses has not been publicized, although officials say that as the initiative becomes more popular, the prices will become cheaper.

“3D-printing of concrete is a potential game changer in the building industry,” said a spokesperson for Eindhoven University.

“Besides the ability to construct almost any shape, it also enables architects to design very fine concrete structures. Another new possibility is to print all kinds, qualities and colors of concrete, all in a single product.”

MOREFirst Ever 3D-Printed Cornea Could Restore Vision for Millions of People

The precise nature of a 3D-printer also means that the houses require much less material than if they were built with human hands. This not only saves money, but it also cuts down on harmful carbon emissions from the concrete.

“We need a technical revolution in the constructing area to respond to the shortage of skilled bricklayers in the Netherlands and all over the world,” Rudy van Gurp, a manager of the construction company in charge of the project, told CNN. “3D printing makes things quicker, better, cheaper and more sustainable by using less material. It also fosters creativity and freedom in the design.”

7 Ways to Keep Your Yard Healthy in the Summer Without Wasting Water

A Quick Guide to Summer Yard Care: Keeping It Green Without Wasting Water
Written by Katie Kuchta
Reprinted with permission from The Environmental Magazine

Summer has finally arrived, and it’s the time of year that you will likely find yourself amping up your lawn care agenda. While watering, mowing, and planting flowers may be at the top of your to-do list, you should do so mindfully. Each lawn has different needs, but there are several key considerations you should make when planning your landscaping tasks. Depending on where you live, there are best practices to help ensure that your lawn is healthy—and the environment is protected all at the same time.

These tips can save you time, too, so you don’t spend so many hours away from summer fun.

1. Plant native grasses and plants that are suited to your climate

Your lawn should be entirely native. Seeds germinate best in the climates they originated in. Sow new grass seed in early spring, keeping in mind that earlier is generally better. Native grasses will withstand local temperatures better, and are also more adapted to handle local weeds, pests, and diseases.

2. Consider grass alternatives

If you live in a drought-prone area, or if your spring has already been unusually dry, consider planting synthetic grasses or drought-tolerant annuals and perennials. Synthetic grass requires no water and lasts over a decade, while drought-tolerant plants will be able to withstand brutal summer temperatures.

MOREDon’t Rake Those Leaves – Good for Your Yard, and the Planet

Consider collecting rainwater to reuse it on your lawn and plants, and consider investing in an inexpensive lawn moisture meter to determine whether you are overwatering. An even simpler way of testing your lawn’s moisture content is to see if you can stick a screwdriver into the lawn. If six inches does not insert itself into the soil easily, the lawn may be too dry.

3. If you do have a lawn, mow regularly

You should mow your lawn at least once a week. Allowing the grass to grow too high will actually stunt its growth and encourage the growth of pesky weeds. While using a riding lawn mower may save time and manpower, consider investing in an old-fashioned push mower instead. Push mowers are less harmful to the environment, and also allow you to get in a good workout at the same time.

4) Water intelligently

Your lawn does not need to be watered every day, so try to avoid setting it up on an automatic sprinkler system, unless you can set up a watering schedule that allows you to conserve as needed. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and only water when rain is not in the cards. Water your lawn at an appropriate time of the day, the best time is typically between 4 am and 10 am, avoid watering from 12 to 6 pm as this is the hottest time of the day. The water will evaporate much faster during the middle of the day, and will not be able to replenish the lawn as needed. When you do water, do so deeply, but only two or three times a week. Your lawn needs around an inch of water a week. If you have pools of standing water, you are likely watering too much.

5) Skip the leaf blowing and raking altogether

While you may find leaves irritating to look at when they fall in your lawn, keep in mind that leaves and grass clippings actually serve as fantastic all-natural fertilizers for your lawn. If you don’t like looking at them, invest in a lawnmower with a mulching feature that will grind them into small pieces for you. Still an eyesore? Rake the clippings and shredded leaves and collect them for your compost pile.

6) Fertilize sparingly and organically

In most cases, your lawn will not need any extra fertilization. Conduct a quick soil pH test to make sure your levels are where they need to be. If they aren’t, fertilize with organic alternatives such as animal manure or grass clippings to avoid contaminating local waterways. The same rule applies to pesticides and herbicides. In most cases, you can control weeds with all homemade solutions such as water, vinegar, and dish soap–no Round-Up required. Growing local species will also help eliminate the likelihood of your lawn falling victim to local diseases or pests.

7) Accessorize in style

While lawn ornaments can really add to the overall curb appeal of your lawn, keep in mind that anything you place on the grass can damage the grass. This means that you should not park your vehicle on the lawn, or leave anything lying on the grass for prolonged periods of time. Instead, invest in permanent fixtures that are eco-friendly and will also increase the functionality of your lawn. For example, solar lights allow you to illuminate your lawn in style, but don’t require any electricity or battery-power, a win-win for both you and the environment.

By following these steps, you can grow a lawn that is both attractive and low-maintenance. Don’t spend hours caring for your lawn this summer. Instead, implement all-natural steps to make sure your lawn is the greenest on the block–in every sense of the word.

Watch Persistent Elephant Stop at Nothing to Summon Busy Caretaker to Get a Lullaby For Her Baby

This heartwarming video from a wildlife sanctuary provides further evidence that music—and caring—are universal languages even to elephants.

Lek Chailert is one of the caretakers at the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand. In addition to looking after the animals during the day, she has a knack for singing them to sleep.

In a unique video uploaded by the park, one of the female pachyderms, Faa Mai, can be seen interrupting Chailert’s interaction with a group of visitors.

Amused by her large companion’s insistence, Chailert can’t help but giggle as Faa Mai nudges her along one of the park trails.

“She pushed me along out into the field, directing me somewhere, and I wondered what it was that she really wanted,” says Chailert. “Finally, Faa Mai took me to see the little Thong Ae, whom she wants to adopt as her own. In the end, it seems as if Faa Mai wanted me to lullaby her little friend, as she is so fond of when I sing lullabies for her.”

Not to disappoint Faa Mai, Chailert curls up under the mammals and starts to sing “The Itsy-Bitsy Spider” until – true to her word – the baby elephant flops over for a nap.

You can see exactly why she is “so proud of (the older elephant’s) heart of care” in the video below, which first shows the lullaby, and then reveals the depth of persistence used to commandeer Chailert’s attention away from tourists.

If a Child Has Been Issued a Fine for Selling Lemonade, This Legal-Ade Team is Here to Help

There is nothing more irritating than an aspiring young entrepreneur being slapped with a fine for trying to sell lemonade on a hot summer day.

It may sound ridiculous, but it actually happens. While some states have passed legislation that exempts children from having to acquire a business permit or food vending license before selling lemonade, other states are still catching up.

So, as a means of supporting the nation’s child-run lemonade stand business, this beverage brand is offering to cover all the legal costs.

Country Time is launching their company’s “Legal-Ade” division: a crack team that is dedicated to helping kids sell lemonade. If a child is issued a fine for selling lemonade, Legal-Ade is offering to cover up to $300 of the cost.

The same applies for any youngster who is required to pay application fees for a business permit.

So if you’ve ever been shut down for trying to sell sweet treats on a hot summer day, you can apply for compensation on the Legal-Ade website (with the help of an adult, of course.)

Dog’s Unique Birthmark is Encouraging People to Share ‘Remarkable’ Things About Themselves

People constantly stop Veronica Peterson on the street asking about Judge’s unique birthmark.

Judge is her 1-year-old Golden Retriever, a pup distinguished by the mark on his muzzle that looks like a black smudge.

Peterson, who is a lawyer in Reno, Nevada, says his mark was the main thing that drew her and her husband to choose him.

“We just knew we had to have him because of how unique he was!” Peterson told Good News Network. “And yes, I named him Judge because I am an attorney – kinda cheesy, I know.”

LOOKKid Therapist Raises Money by Offering Advice to Stressed New Yorkers

The more that people commented on Judge’s birthmark, the more she felt compelled to ask those people to identify what makes them “remarkable,” too. For the last eight months, she has been documenting people’s responses on social media – and their answers are pretty heartwarming.

On “The Remarkable Golden” Facebook page, you can see ruffly 100 pictures of Judge posing with strangers, but the best part is their captions—a quote from each person about what makes them special.

Some of the responders say that they’re unique because of their ability to sleep all day without interruption; others say that they’re singular because of their abilities as an empath; and then some simply pride themselves on their ability to eat a whole bag of donuts in under 2 minutes.

Most inspiring is the number of people who say that they’re unique because they are positive, or compassionate, or because they always choose to see the good in people.

A Woman Given Months to Live From Advanced Breast Cancer is ‘Cured’ in World First

For the first time in world history, a woman with advanced stage breast cancer was “cured” thanks to an experimental new therapy.

Judy Perkins, a 52-year-old engineer and mother-of-two from Florida, was given three months to life after several rounds of chemotherapy failed to keep the cancer from spreading to the rest of her body.

“My condition deteriorated a lot towards the end, and I had a tumor pressing on a nerve, which meant I spent my time trying not to move at all to avoid pain shooting down my arm,” Perkins told The Guardian. “I had given up fighting.”

She was then enrolled at the US National Cancer Institute for a new kind of immunotherapy. The treatment used a process called adoptive cell transfer to remove one of the tumors from Perkins’s body and locate all the friendly T cells that were still able to recognize harmful cancer cells.

RELATEDCancer ‘Vaccine’ Eliminates 97% of Tumors With Amazing Success – Human Trials Next

Once the T cells were identified, they were extracted and multiplied until the scientists had an army of 90 billion cancer-fighting cells which they were then able to inject back into Perkins.

Within weeks, Perkins literally felt her tumors shrinking; she even celebrated by going on a 40-mile hike – and now, two years after the treatment, she is still cancer-free.

“I was very skeptical about whether this treatment would work because I knew the odds were not really great. But within two weeks I could feel the tumors in my chest wall shrinking and I started to feel better,” Perkins told The Telegraph. “It feels miraculous and I am beyond amazed that I have now been free of cancer for two years.

MOREFDA Approves First Ever Drug Designed Exclusively to Prevent Migraines

“Experts may call it extended remission but I call it a cure,” she added.

The researchers in Maryland are currently working on launching full-scale clinical trails for the immunotherapy treatment to be used in other kinds of advanced cancer cases, including prostate and ovarian. Though they caution that the procedure has only been tested – and proved successful – in one woman, they say that it could be the start of a revolution in life-saving cancer treatments.

Cancer researchers elsewhere are experiencing equally impressive results with a variety of immunotherapy and gene-targeting techniques—which don’t have the negative side-effects of traditional treatments. One drug, larotrectinib, was so successful at targeting a fused gene found in a variety of cancer types, it received FDA breakthrough status after proving effective in 93% of pediatric patients in early testing.

The research findings of Perkins’ case were published in Nature Medicine.

Woman Runs to Save Drowning Boy and Winds Up Saving His Pregnant Mother, Too

When Jennifer Potter ran to save the life of a 3-year-old boy in a swimming pool, she didn’t realize that she would also end up saving two more lives in the process.

Potter, who is the assistant manager at an apartment complex in Indianapolis, Indiana, was driving across the property in a golf cart when she heard the youngster calling for help from the deep end of the pool.

Potter immediately jumped into action and ran towards the pool. When she dove in to help the boy, however, she saw that there was another person in distress as well: the boy’s mother was underneath of her son, holding him up and making sure that his face was above water, even though her own face was submerged.

35-year-old Potter, who is also the mother of a young boy, grabbed the child and the drowning woman and hauled them both to safety.

IKEA is Ditching All of Their Single-Use Plastics Throughout Stores

IKEA, the beloved furniture supply chain, has just announced that they will no longer be using any single-use plastics in their stores or restaurants.

Starting in 2020, the company’s 363 outlets worldwide will be eliminating everything from single-use plastic plates, drink stirrers, cups, tableware and straws to freezer bags, garbage bags, and packaging.

Lost John Coltrane Album Discovered 55 Years After Its Recording – Listen to the First Track

There are few names that are as synonymous with jazz as John Coltrane – and even though he died in 1967, he still has a few surprises for us.

A long lost Coltrane record has recently resurfaced and been prepared for release by Indulge! Records. The album, which is called “Both Directions at Once” will be published on June 29th.

The first track of the album, which is only called “Untitled Original 11383,” has already been released online.

The material for the album was all recorded in a single day back in March 1963. Coltrane’s backing band is made up of the same three musicians (Jimmy Garrison on bass, Elvin Jones on drums, and pianist McCoy Tyner) who helped produce some of the saxophonist’s most prominent work – such as “A Love Supreme.”

WATCHAfrican Children Hear a Fiddle for the First Time and Their Reaction is Priceless

In addition to recording six original songs, the album also contains a never-before-heard version of Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy,” according to The Guardian.

After Coltrane finished recording the 7-song album 55 years ago, he entrusted a reference copy of the album to his first wife, Juanita Naima, despite their failing marriage. The two divorced in 1966, one year before Coltrane died, and the record remained in the hands of her family until they recently found it buried in storage.

“In 1963, all these musicians are reaching some of the heights of their musical powers,” said John Coltrane’s son Ravi, a fellow saxophonist who also helped to prepare the album for release, according to The New York Times.

“On this record, you do get a sense of John with one foot in the past and one foot headed toward his future,” he added.

Sonny Rollins, another historically significant jazz saxophone, said that finding rediscovering the Coltrane record was “like finding a new room in the Great Pyramid”.

Special Ed Teacher Makes Good On Her Promise to Give $1 Million to Her Students

Genevieve Via Cava dedicated her entire life to her students – and even though she passed away in 2011, she’s still managing to give back to them.

Shortly after the Dumont school teacher retired roughly 10 years ago, she told the district superintendent that she would one day give $1 million to her students. He laughed it off, thinking that it was a joke, until he received notice that she had bequeathed a small fortune to the school following her death.

A child of the Great Depression, Via Cava refused to indulge in small luxuries. According to NorthJersey.com, she even abstained from buying herself a hearing aid once she started to go deaf in her later years.

Instead, she skimped and saved whatever she could until she had eventually stashed away $1 million.

In addition to being a frugal spender, the New Jersey educator was also a loving, outgoing, humorous woman who would go out of her way to help her students years even after they had graduated.

“She was an amazing woman who could light up a room just by walking in,”Richard Jablonski, who is Via Cava’s long-time friend and executor of her will, told NorthJersey.com.

“She had a smile that was unbelievable. She could talk to anybody just to start conversation with them, and by the time they walked away, they would be hugging.”

Via Cava’s fortune is being used to create a scholarship fund for her special education students. Starting in the 2019 school year, any special education student seeking post-high school education can receive $25,000 in scholarship funding. Thanks to the interest that will be generated by the money, the fund is expected never to run out.

“She’s leaving behind a lasting legacy,” said Jablonski.

Student Who Overcame Abuse is Given a New Car From Stranger With a Brain Tumor

Last week, Sionna Brenn was working a normal shift at Starbucks, and everything was going as per usual – that is, until a stranger jumped out of a dumpster and surprised her with a new car.

The gift was courtesy of Charlie Jabaley, a former music executive who quit the industry after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Now, he wants to use his time helping other people; so last week, he helped Brenn.

It has been a decade since Brenn first came to the US from Ethiopia, but the years have not been easy. The 19-year-old spent years in an abusive foster home before she was finally removed.
