Man Built $550 Staircase for Park After City Estimated $65,000

An amusing bureaucratic debate has arisen in Canada after a retired mechanic took it upon himself to build a $550 staircase on a dangerous local park trail – which is a substantially lower price tag than the city’s original estimate.

When several community members of Etobicoke, Ontario had fallen down or gotten injured on the rocky Tom Riley Park path, local citizens contacted the city for a price estimate on a staircase.

Much to their dismay, the city said that eight steps would cost taxpayers anywhere from $65,000 to $150,000.

So, Adi Astl stepped up to build the installation himself.

With several other neighbors offering to help finance the stairs, Astl hired a homeless man to assist with the project. Within a matter of hours, they had built eight steps for roughly $550.

Though the initiative caused some controversy amongst city representatives saying that “there is no foundation” and the “incline is uneven”, community members have already thanked Astl for his work, saying that it has made the path substantially less dangerous.

Astl, who is in his seventies, say that it was never about the money – it was about keeping people safe.

Meanwhile, Mayor John Tory says that while the original estimate for the staircase was definitely uncalled for, he emphasizes that citizens can’t simply modify public spaces simply because they don’t like the way things are. Additionally, the park already has a more accessible path further past the new staircase – visitors simply used the rocky trail as a shortcut at their own risk.

However, city council members are now saying that instead of tearing down the staircase to build a new one, workers will most likely improve upon Astl’s installation for significantly less money than the original project.

A Prescription for Compassion, This Handyman Builds Cheap Wheelchairs and Gives Them to Disabled Dogs

This animal lover dreamed up a brilliant solution for the dozens of disabled pups wandering around his city.

When 40-year-old Pan Chieh isn’t working as a machine operator, he is busy building homemade canine wheelchairs out of water pipes.

Chieh’s design, which only costs about $30 to build, has bestowed mobility onto dozens of dogs in Tainan, Taiwan who can now move around more efficiently. He says that he first got the idea for the design when his friend took in a rescue dog for treatment and was shown a hefty veterinary bill for a new wheelchair.

Instead, Chieh offered to build her a cheaper prototype.

On the weekends, Chieh and his girlfriend travel around the region and visit animal shelters, rescue organizations, and disabled dog homes. While they sometimes ask for help financing travel expenses, they will often give away the wheelchairs for free.

Additionally, Chieh will make wheelchairs for disabled cats, but the dogs are more at risk from farmers setting traps in order to prevent theft of crops or food.

Watch Hilarious Scene Unfold as Wimbledon Heckler is Invited onto Field

When people hear the phrase “good sportsmanship”, they probably don’t associate that with men wearing skirts.

But that’s exactly what happened at the Wimbledon 2017 Championships earlier this week.

4-time major tennis champion Kim Clijsters was playing a double invitational game at Wimbledon when she asked the crowd whether she should serve down the middle or the side.

WATCHHero Soccer Player Save Opposing Goalie From Choking

When Chris Quinn, an Irishman from County Wicklow, jokingly yelled “body shot” from the audience, Clijsters was having none of it.

The tennis champ then fired back, gleefully yelling: “Do you think you can handle my serve?”

The players invited the heckler onto the field, and without hesitating, Quinn hopped the divider and grabbed a racket.

He wasn’t allowed to play, however, until he followed the All England Lawn Tennis Club dress code rules stating that players must be wearing all white.

Luckily, Clijsters had some spares in her bag.

The Belgian athlete ran to her gear and grabbed a white pair of skorts and a long-sleeved shirt.

After Quinn had wriggled into the women’s apparel, Clijsters obliged his request: a 100-mph body shot.

While he managed to hit it over the net, he missed the return. Clijsters then gave him two more shots, both of which he missed.

The players then insisted on taking a photo together before he returned to the stands – still wearing the skorts. Quinn later told the BBC that he plans on auctioning them off for charity.

MIT is Developing Color-Changing Tattoos that Can Monitor Your Diabetes in Real Time

Your future tattoo design might be good for more than just personal style – they might be able to monitor our body’s health in real time.

Earlier last month, researchers at MIT announced the development of the Dermal Abyss: a biosensing tattoo that changes color according to the levels of your interstitial fluid.

Instead of using regular ink, the Dermal Abyss’s biosensors can reflect the amount of glucose, alkali, and sodium in your body. This means that instead of having to prick their finger with a needle every day, diabetics could simply check their tattoo – just as easily as checking a watch.

“DermalAbyss is a proof-of-concept that presents a novel approach to bio-interfaces in which the body surface is rendered an interactive display,” writes the researchers. “It blends advances in biotechnology with traditional methods in tattoo artistry.”

While readers have already been itching to get their own, researchers are emphasizing that the project is still in the very early stages of development. The biosensors are currently being tested on samples of animal skin to investigate the color change’s visibility.

Clinical trials and commercial use, however, are still a long way off.

The First Self-Defense Studio in the Middle East that Teaches Women to Fight Back

A female boxer was tired of women in the Middle East being told they had to accept violence and abuse – and now, thanks to her, they can stand up for themselves.

That’s because SheFighter, an exclusively female martial arts studio in Jordan, is the first Middle Eastern organization that teaches women how to defend themselves.

Lina Khalifeh is the founder of SheFighter – and she says that when she first began the company, it mostly consisted of her and a few of her students in her parent’s basement. She eventually started partnering with local gyms in the area in order to host classes. Then, in 2012, she opened her own studio in Amman Jordan.

CHECK OUT: Poland to Teach Free Nationwide Self-Defense Classes For Women

Now, the organization has expanded to include 5,000 students of all ages and at least a dozen trainers. The center hosts classes for Syrian refugees, and SheFighter will soon be opening more locations in Saudi Arabia and possibly Kuwait, according to PRI.

The studio gives lessons in taekwondo, boxing, kung fu, and regular boxing, as well as psychological sessions and counseling.

Khalifeh herself has over 17 years of taekwondo experience under her belt. When she first began fighting at just 5 years old, she often got in trouble with her parents because she would get in fights with other boys in order to prove that she was as strong as they were. After she began formal training, she won over 20 medals in tournaments and championships.

LOOKAfghan Girls, Not Allowed On Bikes, Shred On Skateboards Instead

She then got the idea for SheFighter in 2010 when she learned that a close friend of hers was enduring abuse from her family members.

Since SheFighter has expanded, Khalifeh has been recognized by former U.S. President Barack Obama and has been named one of the most innovative, successful female entrepreneurs and “leaders of change”.

While the boxer says that she has faced an exhausting amount of obstacles and difficulties in order to bring SheFighter to fruition, it has all been worth it for the joy and confidence it brings her students.

“Now we’re getting more men who want to enroll their daughters to the training,” Khalifeh told PRI. “I’m really happy about it.”

Couple’s Breathtaking Engagement Photoshoot Shows it’s Never Too Late For Love

Step aside, Romeo and Juliet – there is a new power couple in town.

Cleveland “Murphy” Wilson and Lucinda Myers are getting married in ten days, and the internet has been melting over their engagement photoshoot.

The story of how they met is even more endearing.

70-year-old Murphy and 60-year-old Lucinda were both churchgoers who were waiting for the right person to show up in their lives. Murphy had been happily married to a woman named Antoinette Snodgrass for 41 years, until she passed away in 2013. Devastated, he stopped attending church for several months.

CHECK OUT: Jilted Bride Donates $30,000 Reception to City’s Homeless

Lucinda, who divorced 30 year ago, has always prayed for a man who she could call her own. She moved to Huntsville, Alabama from Boston in 2013 to continue her work as a florist and a baker – and she started attending church around the same time that Murphy came back from his grieving spell.

While the two of them both attended the First Seventh-day Adventist Church for several years, they didn’t have that many conversations. Since Lucinda sang in the choir, and Murphy was the director, she sometimes chatted with him about playing certain songs – but they never spoke much beyond that.

“There were a few more times our paths crossed, but the most important time was when we were in the balcony and out of the blue, during the greeting portion of the service, he said to me, ‘You look very nice today.’ Well, I was so surprised I actually made him repeat it,” says Lucinda. “I thanked him, and I was very happy that he noticed.”

RELATEDToronto Couple Gives Up Big Wedding to Help Syrian Refugees

The story doesn’t stop there, however; after complimenting her appearance, Murphy had to leave the city for a few weeks – and Lucinda noticed his absence.

“When he finally came back to church, and it came time for us to greet each other during the service, I asked him, ‘Where have you been with that pretty smile?’ and I gave him a big hug. He tells me, now, that when he held me around my waist, it was history after that. When he returned to his seat, he told his sister, ‘I think that woman over there likes me.’ He was absolutely right!”

Murphy says that while he was surprised by the comment, it drew his attention to Lucinda in a way that he never had before.

“She was absolutely gorgeous and sweet,” says Murphy. “With the help of my sister, Charlotte, and Lucinda’s best friend, Nancy, Lucinda ended up at my home for a big Sabbath dinner. She held my attention the entire day. I had to admit there were several moments I forgot other people were there.”

MOREBlind Couple Weds After Their Guide Dogs Fall in Love

“She was everything I had been praying for. I took her home that evening, and as I returned to my house I thanked God continuously for answering my prayers.”

Lucinda and Murphy are set to get married on July 29th. Since their engagement photos were published by Gianna Snell Photography, thousands of social media users have gushed praise over their simple message: it’s never too late to fall in love.

Snell says that it took the dream couple a little bit of time to understand the impact of their photos.

“When told that their picture went viral, the pair responded, ‘Viral…what does that mean?’” writes Snell. “Although they are not very active on social media, they are genuinely humbled that others are encouraged by their love story and they want to continue to share it because they truly believe it was God who chose them for each other. ”

New Hampshire Passes Bipartisan “Commonsense Reform” Decriminalizing Marijuana

New Hampshire has just joined the ranks of U.S. states that are implementing “commonsense marijuana reform”.

That’s because the state recently passed House bill 640-FN, which reduces the penalty of marijuana possession from a misdemeanor to a violation.

Any person 18 years or older who is caught with up to one ounce of marijuana will simply be subjected to a $100 fine, rather than criminal charges. All of the proceeds of these offenses will help finance the state’s alcohol abuse program.

If anyone under the age of 18 is found guilty of possession will be subjected to a delinquency petition.

CHECK OUT: Surplus Marijuana Tax Revenues to be Used for Bully Prevention in Colorado

“Reducing the penalty for possessing one ounce or less of marijuana to a violation and allowing offenders to pay fines by mail will result in less time and resources spent on such cases, allowing police and courts to spend more time and resources dealing with serious crimes,” reads the bill.

“A criminal penalty accompanying a conviction for possession of one ounce or less of marijuana can lead to a lifetime of harsh consequences. These may include denial of student financial aid, housing, employment, and professional licenses. Reducing this penalty to a violation will significantly reduce the number of New Hampshire residents who receive criminal records for possessing one ounce or less of marijuana.”

“Marijuana policy reforms that reduce criminal penalties for the possession of one ounce or less of marijuana have the potential to address social and racial inequities in the New Hampshire criminal justice system.”

The bill, which passed the House and Senate with bipartisan support, was signed into effect by Gov. Chris Sununu on Tuesday. The legislation will go into full effect in 60 days.

Teen Succeeds at Making Free Sunscreen Available at Public Pools

These pool patrons can now safely have their fun in the sun without running the risk of skin damage.

That’s because 16-year-old Lynly Brennan helped install free sunscreen dispensers at five of her county’s local pools.

The teen first got the idea when she was researching tanning beds for a school project. According to her findings, people who consistently wear 30 SPF sunblock are 80% less likely to get skin cancer as those who don’t.

Additionally, she found that the city of Boston installed free sunscreen dispensers at all of their public pools in order to combat that very danger.

Brennan then decided to try and do the same thing for St Louis, Missouri.

The Nerinx Hall High School student sent 43 letters to pool patrons, dermatologists, doctors, health professionals, and city representatives who she believed would be interested in the idea.

As it turns out, they were very interested.

Brennan managed to raise $1,600 for the dispenser’s installation at the county’s public pools. She hopes that by having the sunscreen available for free, pool visitors will be more likely to apply it.

While the teen seemed surprised that so many people would listen to the idea of a high school student, she was appreciative of the fact that her local public pools have now become a little bit safer for everyone.

Watch Ryan Reynolds Give Terminally Ill Child the Best FaceTime Call Ever

Ryan Reynolds’s list of good deeds continues to grow bigger by the day.

Most notably, the Hollywood actor once schemed with a recently-dumped high schooler on how she could get back at her ex-boyfriend, and he wrote a moving tribute for a young Deadpool fan who he had befriended before his death.

Now, he has just granted the lifelong wish of a fan who had just been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

5-year-old Daniel Downing only recently came down with pontine glioma, an aggressive, non-curable type of cancer with an average survival time of 9 months.

So when Reynolds heard about the boy’s grim predicament, he decided to call up the youngster in Plymouth, England.

Downing, who is a zealous Marvel fan, couldn’t believe that the A-lister was on the phone. When he heard Reynolds’s voice, he asked if they could Facetime each other.

Reynolds didn’t even hesitate to oblige.

After a quick tour of the facilities, Reynolds said that he had to get back to filming, and they said their goodbyes.

While it may seem like a small gesture, the Downings say that it meant the world to their son.

“I messaged his assistant to say how eternally grateful we all are for him taking the time out to talk to Daniel. It was absolutely fantastic,” Daniel’s mother Stephanie told the Plymouth Herald. “I’m so happy for Daniel – it’s something he wouldn’t normally have been able to do and he was so excited. He told all his friends and his teachers. It’s nice to see him so excited because he has been a bit down lately.”

A friend of the Downings has set up a crowdfunding page that has already raised roughly $23,000 (£17,500) for the family.

Cat Saved From Deadly Anti-freeze Thanks to Vodka Drip

While vodka is usually notorious for hurting people’s health, it may have saved one of this cat’s nine lives.

A sick feline who was found outside of a tire store near Brisbane over the weekend was rushed to the RSPCA after he was believed to be showing signs of having digested anti-freeze.

When blood tests came back positive for acute renal failure, nurses knew they had very little time to administer a cure.

As fate would have it, one of the nurses had been given the perfect antidote for the problem as a Christmas gift, and it was still sitting in her car: a bottle of Absolut vodka.

The nurses quickly hooked the cat up to a vodka drip – and within several hours, he had stabilized.

“Because it’s such a fast-acting toxin, they’re normally dead by the time we get to treat them,” RSPCA doctor Sarah Kanther told ABC News. “So basically once you put the alcohol into his blood it metabolizes that instead, and gives the antifreeze time to pass in a less toxic form.”

If the owner does not come forward to claim the cat, he will soon be put up for adoption – and the nurses already picked up a purrrfect nickname for the feline: “Tipsy”.

Plane Passengers Are Left “In Awe” of Woman’s Kindness Towards Agitated Boy With Autism

Many of us have experienced the strain of being on an airplane when a young child starts getting upset – and while most passengers get agitated or try to ignore it, this woman made a difference, instead.

Rochel and Bentzion Groner were on a plane back from chaperoning a trip to Israel on Friday, and the flight was expected to take eight hours. After a three hour delay and one hour in the sky, many of the passengers were already exhausted.

Then, a young boy with autism started having a meltdown.

“His cries were heard throughout the plane and you could feel the tension among the other passengers,” wrote Bentzion on Facebook. “No one wanted to say anything but it was getting very uncomfortable.”

Rochel told Good News Network she had only one thought: “I gotta help this kid.”

She walked up to the boy and offered him her hand. When he took it, she led him to the back of the plane, took his shoes off so he could be more comfortable, and proceeded to quietly sit and play for several hours.

The boy’s mother traveled with her son to Africa for a year. She lives in the U.S. but is of African descent and barely spoke English. She did, however, know how to express her gratitude.

“Smiles are universal,” says Rochel. “She kept saying, ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you’.”

Rochel’s compassionate gesture came quite naturally, as she and Bentzion both work with Friendship Circle International and ZAB’s Place: a Jewish organization for children with disabilities and a thrift store that exclusively hires employees with special needs in Matthews, North Carolina.

“While most of the passengers watched in awe, little did they know that for Rochel this is her life,” wrote Bentzion. “If we just offer our hand in love and acceptance, miracles will follow.”

Watch a Dog’s Gripping Rescue of a Fawn Struggling at Sea

The perfect antidote for a hound chasing a frightened fox is this tale of a hound saving a frightened fawn.

Storm the English golden retriever was walking along a Long Island shore with his owner Mark Freeley on Sunday morning when the dog took off into the chilly ocean waters.

When Freeley tried to call the pup back, however, he stopped when he saw what Storm was chasing: a tiny baby deer struggling to stay afloat.

Without hesitating, Storm swam out to the fawn, grabbed it by the scruff of the neck, and started towing it back to shore.

Right when they touched down on dry land, the fawn took off running towards the woods before collapsing on the ground. Storm followed the critter, licking and nudging its neck to make sure it was okay.

Freeley then called a local animal rescue crew for help – but as the workers were walking up the beach, the deer became spooked once more and dashed back into the water.

This time, Freeley, his partner Eric Kutzing, and Frank Floridia of Strong Island Rescue went into the water after the fawn, using a rope to tow it back.

The deer, who was sporting an eye injury and several ticks, will be recovering at the animal rescue until it is ready to be released back into the wild.

He Proposed During Garth Brooks Show, Singer Stops Mid-song and Offers to Pay For Honeymoon

This couple were given the best engagement gift anyone could ask for – and they received it only seconds after she said yes.

Drew Bargsley and Chelsea Townsend were enjoying the Garth Brooks concert in Oklahoma City on Saturday night when Bargsley interrupted the show with an important question.

In a grand display of romance, Bargsley waited until the country singer started playing “Unanswered Prayers” to get down on one knee and pop the question.

After Townsend said yes, Brooks took notice of the sweet gesture and brought the song to a screeching halt.

101-Year-old Breaks World Running Record: “I Missed My Nap for This”

101-year-old Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins just broke a world record – and she is pretty nonchalant about it.

By running in the National Senior Games in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday, the senior completed the 100-meter dash in 40.2 seconds, which is six seconds less than the previous world record for women over 100 years old.

She also became the oldest woman to compete in the USA Track and Field Outdoors Masters Championships (USATF).

Hawkins is a widow with four children, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Despite her age, Hawkins reportedly enjoys biking and gardening, as well as running.

In fact, Hawkins says she only recently took up track and field because of her constant activity outdoors, according to the Washington Post.

After 1,300 Years Gone, the Fabled Lynx Could Return to UK Wilderness

For the first time in over 1,000 years, the lynx could be reintroduced to the wilderness of the British Isles.

Lynx Trust UK has submitted a permit to Natural England – the nation’s governmental department for environmental issues – for a 5-year trial run of the species’ reintroduction. If approved, the organization could be granted permission to release 6 to 10 lynx into Kielder Forest in Northumberland.

The organization says that while lynx were native to the area, records show that they may have been hunted into extinction by early settles. Because the native wildcats have been absent from England’s ecosystem for so many centuries, there has been a massive overpopulation of deer in the region.

CHECK OUT: Manatee Population Has Rebounded 500 Percent, No Longer Endangered

Lynx Trust UK believes that by reintroducing the wildcats to the area, their diet will primarily consist of deer, rather than local livestock. However, conservationists say that farmers will be compensated for any sheep or cattle that are harmed by lynx.

The Lynx UK Trust website states: “Of course, predicting precisely how lynx will live here is impossible, and the reason why a trial, monitored in great detail, is so important, however it can also be said that the lynx is extremely consistent in most things, and we expect to only see minor variances in behavior (for example, we expect relatively small territories with a relatively high proportion of deer in diet, because of the high density of deer in the UK).

Additionally, the lynx reintroduction could bring in millions of dollars worth of tourism for local businesses.
