Inspiring Cricket Player Competes Doing Everything Without Arms -Watch

Amir Lone Playing Cricket - Youtube

A Kashmir boy lost both of his arms in a sawmill accident when he was eight years old, but that hasn’t stopped him from excelling at his favorite sport–and becoming captain of his cricket team.

Now age 26, Amir Hussain Lone has learned to do everything with his feet–from folding his laundry, to washing his face–even writing letters.

The young amputee fell in love with the sport after watching games on the neighbor’s television through the window.

“I ended up watching a whole innings from outside, spying through a crack in their window, and it was at that moment that my feelings for cricket crystallized and I pledged that I would play,” Amir told the BBC. “I struggled hard to develop my technique, whether it was bowling or holding the bat. Thanks be to God, I have done pretty well.”

Despite people’s prejudice against his disability, Amir has become an accomplished player.

“Nobody can predict what will happen tomorrow but my hope is that I will one day become an international player, and I’m working really hard to make that happen. God-willing one day I will take my place in the national para-cricket team.”

School Run by Inner City Students Has Near-Perfect Graduation Rate (WATCH)

St Benedicts Prep screenshot CBS News

As the United States still struggles to successfully educate inner-city youth–especially boys–there is a school in the heart of Newark, New Jersey that is run by those very students while maintaining a 98 percent graduation rate.

St. Benedict’s Preparatory School nearly had to close its doors 50 years ago when the racial and political turmoil of the 1960s brought about the collapse of the inner city and ‘white flight’ to the suburbs, at a time when the economy was failing.

That’s when the headmaster, a Benedictine monk named Edwin Leahy, found the perfect guidebook with which to resurrect the school — The Boy Scout Handbook.

CHECK OUT:  She Got Lesson in Patience From Young Target Employee Named Ishmael

It is a manual for teaching boys to be independent and to become leaders. Leahy applied the lessons in that book to St. Benedict’s beginning in 1972 and let the students take the lead in keeping the school open and operating.

Student groups organize the school schedules and are required to run most of the operations. The boys are also members of groups that compete for the highest grades, which causes students to press each other to study harder.

There’s an entrance exam and incoming freshmen participate in a “boot camp” where they learn how the school runs and what’s expected of them — often in military fashion, which instills trust that their classmates will help them not only in school, but in life.

Students refer to one another as “brother” and if one student doesn’t show up for class, his team goes out looking for him.

RELATED: Teen Takes Paralyzed Dad To College, Cares For Him While He Studies

Leahy says this system he set up still allows students to make mistakes and bad decisions that fail. There’s a good reason for that, he told CBS News: “That’s a better learning experience.”

The private all-boys school has been overseen by the Benedictine monks of Newark Abbey since 1868. About 80% of all students are awarded with tuition and more than 90 percent of them go to college.

Origami Girls Get Water, Tears Flowing for Navajo Family Who Never Had Faucet (WATCH)

Two little girls help a Navajo family get running water in this video that will turn on your water works (so, have a tissue handy).

Isabelle and Katherine Kei Adams started their nonprofit Paper for Water when they were just eight and five years old, making and selling origami Christmas ornaments. In the four years since, the siblings have raised $800,000 to deliver clean water to 100 communities in 12 countries.

More than one million people in the U.S. have no running water. Families on the Navajo Reservation in Smith Lake, New Mexico depend on water deliveries for cooking, drinking and bathing needs, but the Kei Adams sisters are making life easier for many. One family, in particular, was given the surprise of a lifetime—and the joy was captured on camera.

Paper for Water teamed up with facial tissue-maker Kleenex and clean water nonprofit Dig Deep to surprise Derrick and Keena Delgarito. The girls and their accomplices got the Delgarito family out of their house, and secretly installed a water system while they were away.

Derrick can’t stop wiping away the tears as he and his wife turn on a kitchen faucet for the first time — and realize what it will mean for their own children.

Walmart and Aspen Institute Announce $5.5 Mil Grant to Pave Career Pathways for Retail Workers

cashier shopping customers-cc-Walmart Corporate

The Walmart Foundation and the Aspen Institute last week unveiled a $5.5 million grant to explore business models designed to enhance economic mobility for retail workers. The Aspen Institute, known for pioneering new approaches to complex problems, will combine key findings from a number of its programs with the goal of building a system where retail workers can gain skills and achieve upward mobility.

According to the National Retail Federation, the retail industry supports one in four American jobs, for a total of 42 million jobs, with future growth anticipated.

The new partnership will not only identify clear paths for worker advancement and transition to adjacent fields, but also improve the satisfaction and engagement of workers remaining in their positions.

With the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting retail salesperson as the most common job in America, the largest portion of the grant is dedicated to exploring alternative models to providing the career pathways. The Aspen Institute’s Economic Opportunities Program is working in partnership with “Corporation for a Skilled Workforce” to develop strategies and interventions at five sites to determine best practices which could be adapted for communities across the United States.

The grant also supports the Institute’s 100,000 Opportunities Initiative to support a coalition of over 40 employers, primarily retailers and restaurants, working to retrain workers with the skills they need to advance in the workplace.

“Developing the next generation of workforce strategies requires a wide range of organizations coming together to play a positive role,” said Maureen Conway, vice president of policy programs and executive director of the Economic Opportunities Program, the Aspen Institute.

“Through our collaboration, we’re working to encourage innovative practices among retailers that are succeeding today by investing in their workers and building their skills. The lessons learned from the retail sector have relevance beyond retail, and will meaningfully contribute to the broader national conversation about the business practices, local programs, and public policies needed to promote a strong economy and provide expanded opportunities for all workers.”

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are playing important roles to strengthen the workforce system beyond the company’s four walls. To date, they have donated more than $30 million in grants as part of the Opportunity initiative.

‘Tomorrow’ Documentary Offers Message of Hope for Better, Greener Future (TRAILER)

When French actress and new mother Mélanie Laurent learned about the dire predictions from the journal Nature which announced the possible extinction of a part of mankind before the end of the 21st century, she wanted to do something that might help avert the disaster.

Turning to her own craft, she joined activist Cyril Dion and gathered a team of four filmmakers to search for solutions.

The resulting documentary investigates what people are doing in ten different countries to improve the outlook for life on planet Earth.

The film, spoken in French, English and Hindi, follows its makers as they travel around the world meeting people intent on making the world a better, greener, more sustainable place. The uplifting stories document improvements that are actually being implemented in the spheres of agriculture, the economy, energy, democracy, and education–side-by-side–to show what our world might look like tomorrow.
