Boy Remembers Scene From Favorite Movie to Save Drowning Brother

Professional actor and wrestler Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson may not have ever given a particularly life-changing performance before – but now, thanks to a 10-year-old boy, one of his performances has become life-saving.

Jacob O’Connor is being credited as a hero after he used a scene from his favorite movie to save his 2-year-old brother Dylan.

Last month, Jacob and his brothers were spending the day at their grandmother’s house. Jacob was about to start watching TV when he noticed that the door was open – and Dylan was gone.

The youngster went outside and saw his brother floating facedown in the backyard pool.

Jacob immediately thought of a scene from the Hollywood action flick San Andreas where the Rock’s character uses chest compressions to save his daughter’s life.

The 10-year-old started mimicking the actor’s motions until Dylan started coughing up water.

Jacob then fetched his grandmother and they rushed Dylan to the hospital. Emergency personnel said that Jacob’s actions almost certainly saved his brother’s life. If he did not intervene as quickly as he did, paramedics may not have been able to help Dylan in time.

After spending just one day in care, the youngster was brought back home to where he can be sure that his superhero brother will always be helping to keep an eye on him in the future.

And if the story couldn’t get any better already, Jacob got a shout out from his hero on Twitter after the rescue.

“Wow amazing story,” wrote the Rock. “You’re a real life hero. We’re all proud of you!”

Man Goes to 13 Ball Parks to Scatter Pal’s Ashes in the Perfect Way for a Plumber

People may grieve in different ways, but Tom McDonald’s way of paying tribute to his late friend is especially unique.

McDonald’s friend from childhood, Roy Riegel, was a devoted baseball fan and an exceptionally talented plumber. He also passed away in April 2008.

So as a means of honoring his best buddy, McDonald has spent the last nine years going to 13 different baseball stadiums across America with his friend’s ashes in tow.

Originally, the retired New York City transit authority worker had planned on sprinkling his buddy’s remains on the fields – but he soon figured out that he wouldn’t be allowed to leave ashes on a baseball green.

So instead of dirtying up the fields, McDonald started depositing his friend’s ashes in a way that was only fit for a plumber: flushing them down the stadium toilets.

While the tribute may seem a little vulgar, McDonald figures that it’s a more personal homage to his buddy – and it’s more permanent.

Google is Now Offering You Help For Depression

Google is taking advantage of its position as a top web browser to offer help to depressed users.

The tech titan has just released a new feature that offers a questionnaire to American users who Google the phrase “clinical depression”.

Under the initial definition of the condition, a link that reads “Check if you’re clinically depressed” leads the user to the PHQ-9, a clinically validated screening survey that can help diagnose varying levels of depression.

The feature was released in partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness in hopes that the questionnaire will encourage more US citizens to pursue treatment and counseling. According to the organization, one in five Americans suffer from depression, but only about 50% receive treatment.

“Clinical depression is a treatable condition which can impact many aspects of a person’s life,” wrote the organization in a statement. “We believe that awareness of depression can help empower and educate you, enabling quicker access to treatment. And while this tool can help, it’s important to note that PHQ-9 is not meant to act as a singular tool for diagnosis.

“We hope that by making this information available on Google, more people will become aware of depression and seek treatment to recover and improve their quality of life.”

App Translates Human Speech Into Elephant Language so You Can Help Save Species

Forget about learning French or Japanese – there is now an app that can help you speak in elephant.

Hello in Elephant is a smartphone app that can translate texts, expressions, and phrases into its basic elephant language counterpart. This means that instead of saying “I love you” or “I’m happy” to your romantic partner, you can send them a sound clip of an elephant expressing the same sentiment.

The tool was developed by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust as a means of raising money and awareness for elephant conservation.

The organization hopes that by bridging the language barrier between humans and the endangered species, users will be more likely to donate towards their survival.

“After decades of research into the ways elephants communicate and behave, we’re beginning to understand their language,” says a Sheldrick spokesperson. “The HelloinElephant Campaign has been created to provide people with the ability to translate simple human words and emotions into elephant calls that signal similar emotions or intentions.”

While dwindling elephant populations may seem dire, hope is on the horizon – China plans on banning ivory trade by the end of the year, as ivory prices have dropped by over 50%.

Cop Stops to Bust a Move With Senior Dancing Alone on the Street

No one could bust this sweet 92-year-old woman for boogying on the side of the road – but a passing police officer did pull over so she could bust a move with the senior.

Sergeant Kim Lenz of the Austin Police Department in Texas first saw Millie Seiver grooving by herself in the parking lot of her apartment building last week.

Seeing that the senior had no one to dance with, Lenz pulled her squad car over, turned up her radio volume, and went to go dance with Seiver.

The video of the dancing duo from Lenz’s squad car has since been viewed thousands of times. Seiver says that she hopes the video will inspire others to dance like no one is watching – even if there is a police officer nearby.

Indian Supreme Court Enshrines Right to Privacy So Government Can’t Misuse Collected Data

The Supreme Court of India has just ruled that privacy is a fundamental right that is protected by the Constitution.

The unanimous verdict comes in the wake of criticism over the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits, and Services) Act of 2016. Petitioners have reportedly spoken out against the act in light of how government agencies may misuse a citizen’s personal information.

Over the course of six days, petitioners pursued marathon arguments in favor and against the right to privacy, according to the Economic Times.

The Supreme Court ruling, however, says that the right to privacy is an extension of Article 21 stating that all Indian citizens have the right to life.

The subject of privacy had been twice been rejected by the Supreme Court in the past. Now, due to its correlation with the recently-passed Aahar Act, judges say that the act’s enforcement will have to be tested on a case by case basis in order to ensure constitutional efficiency.

Cricket Wireless published a video earlier this week of John Cena being given a series of letters that were written to him by his fans.

The fans wrote messages about how – despite their various sicknesses, illnesses, and struggles – the WWE icon always helped to keep their spirits up.

No matter how tough Cena may be, it is clear to see that he was not prepared for such a heartwarming surprise.

“You guys do the work, I mean that,” he exclaims. “Don’t think that you’re the only one who doesn’t have challenges to face every day. You all lead by example and I mean it when I say it, never give up.”

You Can Actually Do Something Good With Those Eclipse Glasses Instead of Throwing Them Away

Now that you have enjoyed the magic of the solar eclipse, you can ensure that other less fortunate children can have the same opportunity.

Astronomers Without Borders is an organization that is collecting lightly used eclipse glasses from Americans who experienced the most recent breathtaking phenomenon. The glasses will then be distributed to schools in South America and Asia so they can use them to view the next local eclipse in 2019.

The organization has already collected over 100,000 glasses from corporate sponsors, half of which have been donated by Google.

While Astronomers Without Borders is also raising money to buy more eclipse glasses, they hope to ease the environmental impact of the event by recycling the paper devices for the less fortunate.

We’ll have more places to send glasses posted before long, but for now, everyone is traveling back from the eclipse,” says the program. “Most importantly, don’t throw your glasses away! If you want to collect them from your friends, neighbors, school or anything else please do!”

These Little Athletes Glued to Their Phones Are Not Ignoring Each Other Like Adults Assume

While there are more than enough social media posts about youngsters being glued to their phones, this sweet photo is not what it seems.

Bob Holtzman of the Major League Baseball Players Association posted a heartwarming picture of two Little League World Series athletes sitting side by side, with their eyes fixed on their phone screens.

Though viewers might be quick to criticize, Holtzman said that the two baseball players were actually befriending each other by using Google Translate to have a conversation.

One of the kids was a player from the South Dakota team representing the Midwest bracket, while the other was a Dominican Republic player representing the Carribean.

The photo has since been shared thousands of times by adults and youngsters alike, enjoying the sweet connection that is only made possible through technology.

These Youth in the Congo Offer a Choice of Music Over Conflict

When Kelvin and his friends filmed their own version of a US pop song, they never knew it would be such a hit – especially amongst young people just like him.

Kelvin Batumike knew youth faced a bleak future in his hometown of Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. So in 2013, he and his friends founded Kivu Youth Entertainment as an alternative to joining militia groups.

“The eastern part of our country has been affected by conflict and most of the time the vulnerable are the youth. We have grown up in a climate of conflict and that is how other friends and I got the idea to start Kivu Youth Entertainment,” Mr Batumike, Director of Kivu Youth Entertainment, told Peace News Network.

“We recruit a lot of young, talented, artists and cultural performers who are in Goma, to allow the youth do something else other than participating in the conflicts,” he said.

The group organizes concerts and partner the Amani festival, but it was their version of the Pharrell Williams song “Happy” that earned them YouTube fame.

“Happy from Goma is something that has helped in changing the image of the eastern part of our country, that has faced a lot of conflict. Happy from Goma is a campaign to show that there is something else apart from the conflict and also trying to show the world something else other than the refugee camps and child soldiers.”

They also did a Swahili version of the song, and Kelvin believes multi-media skills can help his peers.

“Art is a way of transmitting a message or changing mentality of people and I think it is something going to contribute in changing the image of our country,” Mr Batumike said.

“In the future, I want Kivu Youth to become a big center – well established, with equipment – and give help where the community needs. We would also like to be seen as reference in the production of multi-media and arts,” he said.

Dad and Daughter, Both Cancer Survivors, Help Pay Medical Bills for Others

You know what they say: like father, like daughter.

After 9-year-old Becca Boo Salmins completed her two-and-a-half year battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, she enlisted the help of her hero father – who is a fellow cancer survivor himself – in helping to fulfill her dream of promoting awareness and raising funds for childhood cancer, so other children wouldn’t have to go through the pain that she did.

Together, the cancer-slaying duo launched Knots and Arrows, a bracelet and retail company that donates a portion of its proceeds to help with the cost and expenses of treating childhood cancer survivors. They also give money to childhood cancer research charities.

10-Year-old Boy Delivers His Baby Brother – and Saves His Life

Childbirth can be stressful for everyone, especially for a boy who is only 10 years old.

But that didn’t stop Jayden Fontenot from helping to deliver his newborn baby brother and save his life.

Jayden’s mother, Ashley Moreau, was at their home in Sulphur, Louisiana earlier this month when she went to use the bathroom and her water suddenly broke – over one month earlier than when she was originally scheduled to give birth.

Moreau was also horrified to see that not only was she bleeding profusely from a torn uterine lining, but her baby’s feet were also poking out, leaving it in the “breech” position: a condition that can increase the risk of birth complications.

She called her son into the room and asked him to fetch his grandmother from next door.

Unfortunately, the senior had just undergone a back surgery, making her too weak to walk over to their house. As Jayden ran back to help his mother, his grandmother called 911.

“I said (to Jayden), ‘You’re going to have to deliver your brother, and we have to do it fast because the baby’s feet are turning blue and he can’t breathe,’” Moreau told TODAY. “He said, ‘Tell me what I need to do and I’ll do it.’‘

After rotating the infant into a safer delivery position at his mother’s instruction, Jayden managed to help his mother through the birthing process. But once the delivery was finished, Jayden realized that his brother was not breathing.

He then ran to the kitchen and grabbed a nasal aspirator that he had seen his mother use on his 1-year-old sister Remi. By the time emergency paramedics arrived at the scene, Jayden had already used the device to restore his brother’s breathing.

Newborn baby Daxx has been recovering at the Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, but he is expected to be sent home in the coming week.

“Every time I think about it, I just cry,” said Moreau. “I don’t think Jayden understands what he’s done and how big it is.”

Pit Bulls Save Children From Venomous Snake Lurking in Their Yard

While pit bulls might sometimes get a bad rap, these two pups are being hailed as heroes after they rescued a youngster from a copperhead snake.

Last week, Slayer and Paco the pit bulls were playing in the yard of their home with their owner’s grandchildren: 4-year-old Zayden and 1-year-old Mallory.

As the dogs were playing with the kids, however, they suddenly became transfixed on something in the grass. The dogs’ owner, Melissa Butt, says that since the pitties are very well-trained, she became alarmed when they would not stop barking at the unknown disturbance.

While Butt went to investigate the source of the dogs’ distress, her grandchildren were taken inside by their parents.

Butt then saw a copperhead sitting in the grass.

The dogs continued to stand guard over until the snake lashed out and bit Paco on the elbow and Slayer on the snout.

Slayer then killed the snake and the dogs were rushed to the emergency animal veterinarian 40 minutes away in Brandon, Florida.

But don’t worry – after being treated with antivenin, Slayer and Paco are now recovering back home, and their family is overwhelmed with gratitude.

“There’s nothing I can say or do to show how grateful I am,” Butt told TODAY. “How do you thank someone for saving your loved ones?”

Well for starters, the Butt family has rewarded Slayer and Paco with plenty of treats and toys – and of course, tons of cuddles and kisses.

International Space Station Photobombs Solar Eclipse (And Other Stunning NASA Pics)

Well, it’s over. The great North American solar eclipse tracked across America as crowds gazed into the heavens with their protective eye glasses in cities and towns nationwide.

Some people – within the narrow path of totality – saw a total solar eclipse for a few moments, the first in this country in 38 years.

“I was in the totality path…and holy crap it was absolutely gorgeous,” wrote a South Carolina Instagram user named combustioncat.

NASA posted some incredible photos, and the International Space Station Twitter account shared one of them (above) that captured the photobombing of its orbiting spacecraft in front of the eclipse’s path.

The cluster of dark blurs are sunspots but below them and to the right, you can even make out the station’s distinctive solar arrays.

Another image was a composite showing the progression of a partial solar eclipse over Ross Lake, in Northern Cascades National Park, Washington.

A total solar eclipse swept across a narrow portion of the contiguous United States from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Chile Rejects $2.5 Billion Iron Mine to Protect Penguins

The Chilean government has just turned down a $2.5 billion mining project in favor of endangered wildlife conservation.

The original project proposal was for an iron mining initiative launched by the Andes Iron firm in the Coquimbo region. The region is dangerously close to the National Humboldt Penguin Reserve: a collection of islands that house and protect the Humboldt penguin, along with several other endangered species.

If Chilean representatives had accepted the proposal, the firm would have begun extracting millions of tons of metal from the earth, as well as building a seaport for the metal’s exportation.

Since conservationists warned that the projects could potentially harm the penguins, the Chilean government refused.

“The compensation measures were insufficient and could not guarantee the protection of species of concern,” Environmental Minister Marcelo Mena told the Associated Press.

“We are not against economic development or projects that are necessary for the country’s growth, but they must offer adequate solutions for the impact they will have.”

Wind and Solar Power Has Likely Saved Up to 12,700 American Lives, Study Says

This new study asserts that not only is renewable energy good for the health of the earth – it is also good for human health.

The research, which was published in Nature Energy, showed that the utilization of wind and solar energy helped to prevent up to 12,700 premature deaths over a 9-year period.

According to researchers at Elsevier, burning fossil fuels releases tiny harmful particles into the air creating pollution, which is known to cause premature death. Policies that aim to reduce our consumption of fossil fuels like coal often cite the potential health benefits – and related cost savings – linked to reducing toxic emissions.

An increase in 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air pollution particles can cut a person’s life expectancy by 9 to 11 years – more than previously thought.

In addition to positive health benefits, the researchers estimate that the renewables are worth between $5.3 billion and $106.8 billion in “cumulative climate benefits” over the course of the 9-year period.

Should the USA continue to invest in sustainable energy, researchers expect that the number of Americans positively affected by the shift will increase.

Once a Quadriplegic He Now Throws Ceremonial First Pitch After Breakthrough Treatment

No one ever believed that Lucas Lindner would be able to use his arms again, let alone throw the first pitch at a Major League baseball game.

That’s why the crowd erupted into cheers when the Eden, Wisconsin youth threw the first ball at Miller Park for the Reds versus Brewers game last week.

“Throwing out the first pitch at a Major League game is not something I could have imagined a year ago,” said Lucas.

Only 14 months previously, Lucas had suffered a severe spinal cord injury when his car swerved off the road and into a tree in order to avoid hitting a deer. He was flown to the hospital and given immediate surgery to stabilize his spine. He was left without the ability to move his limbs below the neck and upper arms.

Then, in June 2016, Lucas was given an innovative stem cell treatment by Shekar N. Kurpad, the director of the Froedtert and Medical College of Wisconsin Spinal Cord Injury Program.

One of only five people to receive this treatment in the United States, Lucas has since regained the ability to move his triceps, hands, and fingers.

“I want to show everyone that there is hope that spinal cord injury patients can regain function,” says Lindner. “I am looking forward to going back to school, pursuing my dream of working in the IT field and living independently someday.”

“When I first met Lucas about a year ago, he had some use of his arms and little to no use of his hands or fingers,” said Dr. Kurpad. “The fact that he is throwing out the first pitch at a Major League Baseball game is amazing. It illustrates the strides medical science is starting to make in helping paralyzed patients regain useful function. I’m very encouraged by the early results we are seeing with AST-OPC1”

Watch Cute 4-Year-old Reassure His Frightened Sister at the Car Wash

This tearful toddler was terrified by the impending doom of the car wash – but thankfully, her brave brother was there to console her throughout the ordeal.

Declan and Raleigh Price were with their parents in Los Angeles, California when the family car needed a good scrub, so they visited one of their local car washes.

Little Raleigh, upon seeing the vehicle ahead of them become engulfed in the scary washers, started to cry.

Declan, who knew the spinning sponges were harmless, grabbed his sister’s hand to reassure her: “We are going to get home very fast,” said Declan. “We won’t die.”

Though his 2-year-old sister continues to wail intermittently throughout the carwash, her 4-year-old brother is there with her the whole time.

Finally, by the end of the washer phase, Raleigh starts to giggle and smile in excitement over the rinsing cycle.

“We’re going home!” smiles Declan. “All done!”

Man Gives Up Six-Figure Salary to Teach at Poor School, Then 95% of His Students Go to Top Colleges

This school teacher used to be a high-powered lawyer with a six figure salary – but he gave it all up so he could help young people in his home neighborhood, one of the poorest areas in England.

Before Mouhssin Ismail started teaching at the Newham Collegiate Sixth Form school in East London, he worked at the international law firm of Norton Rose Fulbright.

 

After teaching for just one year, 190 of his 200 students are set to go to some of Britain’s best universities. Of that percentage, nine have been accepted to Oxford and Cambridge. One of the students has even been given an offer to study at MIT.

The 38-year-old economics instructor says that he first became inspired to work in education after becoming tired of impersonal financing.

“After a couple of years, I felt unfulfilled,” said the teacher, according to the Daily Mail. “I didn’t think, ‘that’s great, I have just done another £50 million deal,’ I thought, ‘am I making a contribution to society?’”

“I believe in the transformational nature of education and I want to give the most able students of Newham the very best chance of going to the most competitive universities in the country and abroad,” says Ismail.

“My vision for The NCS is to make sure that the young men and women that leave us have the skills and habits of mind to be able to become future leaders in their chosen profession and in society at large. They will be confident visionaries who seek out opportunities and find new ways of thinking.”

British Columbia to Ban Grizzly Bear Trophy Hunting

Starting on November 30th, grizzly bear trophy hunting will be banned in the Canadian province of British Columbia.

“This action is supported by the vast majority of people across our province,” said the Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Minister Doug Donaldson. “By bringing trophy hunting of grizzlies to an end, we’re delivering on our commitment to British Columbians.”

“In particular, we owe it to generations past and future to do all we can to protect the beauty and uniqueness of the Great Bear Rainforest. We believe the action we’re taking goes beyond the commitment to Coastal First Nations made as part of the 2016 Great Bear Rainforest agreements.”

According to a statement released by the Government of British Columbia, there are currently 15,000 grizzly bears in the province, mostly in the 24,000 sq. mile (6.4m hectare) temperate rain forest along the Pacific coast.

In addition to outlawing trophy hunting, government officials hope to provide further funding for environmental and wildlife conservation.
