California Slashes Emissions to 1990s Level, Reaches Climate Goal Years Early

The California Air Resources Board just announced that greenhouse gas pollution in California fell below 1990 levels for the first time since emissions peaked in 2004—an achievement roughly equal to taking 12 million cars off the road or saving 6 billion gallons of gasoline a year.

“California set the toughest emissions targets in the nation, tracked progress and delivered results,” said Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. “The next step is for California to cut emissions below 1990 levels by 2030 – a heroic and very ambitious goal.”

Under Assembly Bill 32 passed in 2006, California must reduce its emissions to 1990 levels (431 million metric tons) by 2020. The 2016 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory published today shows that California emitted 429 million metric tons of climate pollutants in 2016 – a drop of 12 million metric tons, or three percent, from 2015.

“In California we see the impacts of climate change all around us, but our efforts to curb its worst impacts are on track. We are well positioned to meet the challenge of the 2030 target,” said CARB Chair Mary D. Nichols. “This is great news for the health of Californians, the state’s environment and its economy, even as we face the failure of our national leadership to address climate change.”

Senate Bill 32, signed in 2016, requires the state to go even further than AB 32 and cut emissions 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030—the most ambitious carbon goal in North America.

The state’s annual emissions inventory helps keep the state accountable for meeting its emissions reduction targets. Highlights from the inventory published today include carbon pollution dropping 13 percent statewide since a 2004 peak; meanwhile, the economy grew 26 percent. Per capita emissions continue to be among the lowest in the country, at approximately half as much as the national average.

Additionally, Carbon pollution dropped 3 percent between 2015 and 2016—roughly equal to taking 2.4 million cars off the road or saving 1.5 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel. California now produces twice as many goods and services for the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions as the rest of the nation.

RELATED: California Becomes First State to Feed Chronically Ill With Specially Prescribed Meals

Thanks to the carbon price signal created by the Cap-and-Trade Program that makes fossil fuel generation more expensive, cleaner out-of-state electricity is increasingly taking the place of fuels such as coal. This included more imports of hydroelectric power from outside the state, which grew by nearly 39 percent in 2016 thanks to abundant rainfall throughout the West Coast.

“Emissions may vary from year-to-year depending on the weather and other factors,” said CARB Executive Officer Richard Corey. “However, this inventory demonstrates that our policies are working to incentivize GHG-free energy sources and ensure the state remains on track to meet its climate targets in 2020 and beyond.”

The transportation sector, the state’s largest source of greenhouse gases, saw a 2 percent increase in emissions in 2016 because of increased fuel consumption. But the state also saw cars and trucks use a record amount of biofuels – 1.5 billion gallons in all – as a result of the state’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard. These low-carbon alternative fuels, consisting mostly of biodiesel, renewable diesel, and ethanol, avoided 14 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, compared to what would have happened if conventional fossil fuels had been used.

Emissions from the industrial sector – including refineries, oil and gas extraction, cement plants, and other stationary sources – fell 2 percent from 2015 levels, though emissions from refineries increased slightly.

The latest data for this inventory is from 2016. This is because the process for verifying and validating required reporting of emissions from all facilities under the Cap-and-Trade Program takes more than a year, and additional data undergoes rigorous vetting by other government agencies.

What’s Cookin’, Good Lookin’? Watch Wild Animals React to Seeing Their Own Reflections

Humans can spend an hour studying themselves in a mirror, but what about animals?

A strategically placed camera in the Amazon rainforest captured the reactions of a dozen animals seeing themselves reflected in a large mirror – and their reactions are quite varied.

When an adult jaguar sees itself in the mirror, it seems like its trying to figure out why its new acquaintance is copying every single one of its gestures. A family of wild pigs catches sight of themselves only to flee into the jungle. A puma, on the other hand, aggressively tries to fight its foe, only to fail (for obvious reasons).

When Beach Wedding is Rained Out, Stranger Runs Up to Bride and Offers Up Her Home Instead

A person’s wedding day might be one of most memorable days of their entire life – so it can be pretty devastating if something goes wrong.

Dulce Gonzalez was experiencing this kind of devastation when a monstrous thunderstorm started pouring rain on her beach wedding.

The 24-year-old bride and her husband Ariel were determined to get married on the beaches of Pascagoula, Mississippi because that’s where they first met – and where they started seeing each other romantically. The couple was set to get married on the last week of June, but the weather had other plans.

Gonzalez and dozens of other wedding guests watched the rain come down from their cars, hoping that it would stop – but thankfully, there was someone else who was watching the situation unfold as well.

WATCH: New Chance at Love for Woman Who Woke Up From Coma to Find She Has Second Husband

Throughout the day, 67-year-old Cynthia Strunk and her husband had been watching the Gonzalez wedding preparations from their beach house. Since the Strunks first moved into the house in 1999, they have seen dozens of weddings take place on the beach, but they had never seen one get rained out before.

Heartbroken by the predicament, Cynthia ran up to the bride’s car, soaking wet and without an umbrella, and told Dulce to simply host the wedding in her beach home.

“The bride’s mother started crying at that point and [Gonzalez] said ‘thank you’ and she had tears in her eyes,” Strunk told The Washington Post.

Cynthia simply asked for ten minutes to prepare the house. She told the Post that despite the house usually being pretty messy from their grandkids, luck was on their side; the house was tidy, and since the Strunks are used to having family reunions with plenty of relatives, they had several dozen folding chairs at the ready.

Cynthia arranged and decorated one of their larger rooms “as if it was her own daughter” who was getting married.

When all of the wedding guests were escorted into the house, sheltered from the rain with umbrellas in hand, Dulce was “shocked” by what she saw.

“They had everything set as if we actually planned it,” Gonzalez said. “It was perfect. I told my husband that [the Strunks] were little angels that God sent us.”

The cozy little wedding proceeded wonderfully with a gorgeous view of the rainy beach from the windows. After the ceremony, Dulce’s father delivered a speech thanking the Strunks for their kindness.

“The father was just so appreciative and they were just such gracious, wonderful people,” Strunk told the Post. “We were just happy to do it — and to us, it was no big deal.”

The newlyweds have kept in contact with the Strunks on social media since the spontaneous indoor wedding. The Gonzalezes brought the older couple cake and flowers for the Fourth of July, and Dulce says that she plans on making them dinner sometime soon.

On top of that, the Strunks told Dulce that if she ever has a child, she should bring them by the house so they can see how her marriage began – and Dulce says that she will be more than happy to do so.

‘More Reliable’ New Form of Digital Analysis May Help to Eliminate Animal Testing

Testing chemicals, medicines, and cosmetics on animals may soon be a thing of the past thanks to this new, “more reliable” approach.

A recently published study shows that advanced algorithms working from large chemical databases can predict a new chemical’s toxicity better than standard animal tests.

The researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health mined a large database of known chemicals they developed to map the relationships between chemical structures and toxic properties. They then showed that one can use the map to automatically predict the toxic properties of any chemical compound—more accurately than a single animal test would do.

The most advanced toxicity-prediction tool the team developed was on average about 87% accurate in reproducing consensus animal-test-based results—across nine common tests, which account for 57% of the world’s animal toxicology testing. By contrast, the repetition of the same animal tests in the database were only about 81% accurate—in other words, any given test had only an 81% chance, on average, of obtaining the same result for toxicity when repeated.

RELATED: Researchers Have Finally Created Simple Eco-Friendly Machine That Recycles Used Diapers

“These results are a real eye-opener—they suggest that we can replace many animal tests with computer-based prediction and get more reliable results,” says the study’s principal investigator Thomas Hartung.

The computer-based approach could also be applied to many more chemicals than animal testing, which could lead to wider safety assessments. Due to costs and ethical challenges, only a small fraction of the roughly 100,000 chemicals in consumer products have been comprehensively tested.

Animals such as mice, rabbits, guinea pigs and dogs annually undergo millions of chemical toxicity tests in labs around the world. Although this animal testing is usually required by law to protect consumers, it is opposed on moral grounds by large segments of the public, and is also unpopular with product manufacturers because of the high costs and uncertainties about testing results.

LOOK: Generator That Creates Electricity From Gravity Could Revolutionize Renewable Energy

“A new pesticide, for example, might require 30 separate animal tests, costing the sponsoring company about 20 million dollars,” says Hartung, who also directs the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing, which is based in the Bloomberg School’s Department of Environmental Health and Engineering.

The most common alternative to animal testing is a process called read-across, in which researchers predict a new compound’s toxicity based on the known properties of few chemicals that have a similar structure. Read-across is much less expensive than animal testing, yet requires expert evaluation and somewhat subjective analysis for every compound of interest.

As a first step towards optimizing and automating the read-across process, Hartung and colleagues two years ago assembled the world’s largest machine-readable toxicological database. It contains information on the structures and properties of 10,000 chemical compounds, based in part on 800,000 separate toxicology tests.

For their study, the team enlarged the database and used machine-learning algorithms, with computing muscle provided by Amazon’s cloud server system, to read the data and generate a “map” of known chemical structures and their associated toxic properties. They developed related software to determine precisely where any compound of interest belongs on the map, and whether—based on the properties of compounds “nearby”—it is likely to have toxic effects such as skin irritation or DNA damage.

LOOK: Cheap ‘Plant Pods’ That Can Grow More Lettuce in a Room Than Half-Acre Plot May End Hunger

“Our automated approach clearly outperformed the animal test, in a very solid assessment using data on thousands of different chemicals and tests,” Hartung says. “So it’s big news for toxicology.” Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL), a company that specializes in developing public safety standards and testing against them, co-sponsored this work and is making the read-across software tool commercially available.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency have begun formal evaluations of the new method, to test if read-across can substitute for a significant proportion of the animal tests currently used to evaluate the safety of chemicals in foods, drugs and other consumer products. The researchers also are starting to use it to help some large corporations, including major technology companies, to determine if they have potentially toxic chemicals in their products.

“One day perhaps, chemists will use such tools to predict toxicity even before synthesizing a chemical so that they can focus on making only non-toxic compounds,” Hartung says.

The study was published in the journal Toxicological Sciences earlier this week.

JJ Watt Quietly Donates $10,000 to Family of Fallen Firefighter Thanks to a Tweet

While a community mourns a friend, father, and firefighter, this NFL player is being hailed for quietly reaching out to ease their financial struggles.

Last week, firefighter Captain Cory Barr died in a gas explosion when he was responding to a call near his home in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. In addition to Cory’s wife Abby having to grieve her husband, the explosion also destroyed the tavern that she managed with her husband.

A 15-year veteran of the fire department, Barre was also beloved by his community – so as a means of raising money for their fallen friend, a local church started a GoFundMe page for Barr’s family.

One Twitter user took it upon themselves to send a direct message to JJ Watt, the defensive backend for the Houston Texans football team, in the hopes that the Wisconsin native would sympathize with the cause.

The tweet read: “[JJ Watt] please do what you can for Cory Barr’s family. He was very well known, liked & appreciated in the Sun Prairie community. He was brave and a true hero! Any & all support from one fellow firefighter family to another!”

Not long after, a massive donation of $10,000 was made to the GoFundMe page courtesy of JJ Watt.

He did not publicize his good deed or draw attention to it, but people noticed. The original goal for the campaign was $15,000; within a few hours, it had raised over $40,000. One day later, the page has now raised $121,000.

‘Landmark’ Mosquito Trial Eliminates 80% of Invasive Species Carrying Disease in Australia

By Aedes Albopictus, public domain

An exciting new trial experiment from Australia has successfully eliminated 80% of a disease-carrying mosquito population.

The Aedes aegypti species of mosquito has been called the most dangerous, invasive pest in the world. The Aegypti, along with two other species, are responsible for 17% of the world’s infectious disease transmissions globally, the most recent outbreaks including dengue and Zika.

So as a means of wiping out the perilous bugs, scientists in North Queensland reared millions of male Aegypti mosquitos that were infected with a bacteria that would make them sterile. The researchers then released these mosquitos across three towns on Cassowary Coast.

The male mosquitos could not bite or spread disease – but when they mated with wild females, the eggs wouldn’t hatch and the population took a massive dive.

RELATED: 8-Year Study Shows That Simple Treatment Can Reverse Type 1 Diabetes to Almost Undetectable Levels!

The experiment, which was conducted with the help of Verlily, an affiliate of Google’s Alphabet Inc., is part of their Debug project: an initiative that is dedicated to wiping out disease-carrying mosquitos in a sustainable, eco-friendly way.

While this sort of technique may seem to have disastrous ecological implications, the researchers are quick to mention that the Aegypti mosquito is a horribly invasive species that is native to Africa.

“The main ecological impact would be to restore the ecosystem to how it was before the mosquitoes invaded,” says the Verily website.

The team also says that the “Sterile Insect Technique” has been around since the 1950’s – but wielding it against mosquitos has proven difficult without the ability to rear and raise large amounts of male mosquitos.

Now, they hope to continue their experiments so that they can prevent millions of diseases and infections in the future and bring balance to worldwide ecosystems.

“We learned a lot from collaborating on this first tropical trial and we’re excited to see how this approach might be applied in other regions where Aedes aegypti poses a threat to life and health,” Kyran Staunton from James Cook University said in a statement.

Watch 95-Year-old Air Force Veteran Show Little Boy How to Be Brave on the Diving Board

When a young boy was too scared to get on the diving board at a local pool, Michael Bliss was the man to prove him wrong.

The 95-year-old Air Force veteran was determined to jump off the diving board as a means of showing a neighborhood youngster that there was nothing to be afraid of.

So with cane in hand and family members gently helping him along, Bliss stepped up to the plate.

While it seems that he may have given his folks a heart attack by almost losing his balance on the board, the senior finally managed to take the plunge – and he did it by performing one of the most impressive half-belly flops ever executed by someone in their golden years.

When Young Man Sees Broken Stop Sign, He Spends His Lunch Break Holding it Up in the Heat

A young man is being hailed for keeping the community safe last week when he was spotted holding up a broken stop sign in sizzling temperatures.

Randy Jones had been putting up warning markers for new highway construction in Oklahoma City when he saw Logan Duncan standing in the heat with sign in hand.

When Jones stopped to ask what the youth was doing, Logan said that he had been driving down the road when he noticed that someone had run over the stop sign at the intersection. Not only that, he witnessed what could have been a dangerous car collision because of the sign’s absence.

So when he went on his lunch break at work, Logan drove back to the intersection and held up the sign to prevent any automotive accidents.

Touched by Logan’s gesture, Jones called city workers and asked them to come by and fix the sign. A while later, the stop sign was standing tall once more, but not before Jones could snap a photo of the young man holding the sign.

He later posted the photo to Facebook where it garnered thousands of appreciative responses and praise from social media users.

“He was standing out in 95° weather with no water and he did it for free,” Jones wrote. “Hopefully this gets back to this young man. You did a good job and I’m sure the citizens of the city of Oklahoma city appreciate it as well.”

These Aerial Drones Are Supporting Farmers When Bees Are in Short Supply

Governments, businesses, and individuals are all scrambling to nourish dwindling bee populations.

Since such a large percentage of the world’s food supply is grown with the help of honeybees, their decline has spelt real danger for farmers and agricultural businesses who depend on bees for their pollination.

Luckily, a US-based startup has harnessed technology as a means of giving bees a break and saving farmers’ crops.

Dropcopter is an organization that uses aerial drones to pollinate crops and orchards. Based on careful testing and demonstration in America, the drones have boosted pollination in cherry, almond, and apple crops by 10% to 60%.

RELATED: EU Passes Total Ban on Pesticides That Harm Bees

There are obvious reasons as to why Dropcopter has to be careful about how they utilize the drones – for starters, if bees see the free pollination as an easy meal, they may be less inclined to pollinate crops. Bees are also much better pollinators than robots, since the drones are only programmed to essentially drop pollen bombs on plants en masse, while honeybees are more dextrous in maneuvering the plant’s many folds and facets.

However, relying on bees for pollination can be risky business for farmers. If their crops have a very slim harvest period and the weather conditions aren’t favorable, then honey bees are unable to do their job properly, which can lead to thousands of dollars in lost crops.

This way, Dropcopter sees the drones more as a backup of helping struggling farmers when bees are in short supply.

Did You Know Cows Have Close Friendships and Hold Grudges? (And Other Fun Facts)

It’s easy to forget how important they are to our food chain, so July 11th was christened as Cow Appreciation Day. Here are some great ways to say “Moo-chas grasses” to bovines everywhere:

– Learn about cows

Did you know that cows form close friendships, with at least two preferred pals? They also hold grudges – for years. They are emotional creatures and they will produce more milk when treated better as individuals.

They get excited if given the chance to solve problems: When challenged to figure out how to open a door or get to food, their heartbeat increases, their brainwaves show excitement, and some even jump into the air.

Cows benefit from almost 360-degree vision, with the ability to see predators coming from any direction. They also have an excellent sense of smell and are able to detect odors from up to 5 miles away. Their hearing is also beyond human capacity, with both low and high frequency sounds.

– Have a glass of ethically sourced milk.

Or better yet, make it a milk punch, a sweet, cold, elegant blend of dairy and liquor that dates back centuries, which is enjoying a revival these days.

fearrington-belted-galloway-cow-with-family

– Visit a working farm and hug a cow.

If you don’t live near a local farm, you can go on a vacation to Fearrington Village, a resort and spa on a historic dairy farm in North Carolina. Or if you’re really into cows, you can even host your wedding there.

The farm is home to these Belted Galloway cows (above), which are reminiscent of an Oreo cookie. (Milk, please!) This striking breed of cow, which originated in Galloway, Scotland over a century ago, now adorn many fields in the USA today.

– Donate a cow to end hunger for a family.

Heifer International is famous for its program that lets you buy a cow and donate it to a family, helping lift them out of poverty.

For the last 70 years, the organization has donated thousands of dairy animals to communities in need across Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

In addition to being able to buy a heifer, water ox, or goat for a faraway family, you can also make a difference by sending girls to school or helping to jumpstart a local business.

– Take a local cheese making class and learn the difference between cow, sheep and goat’s milk cheeses.

This tip may not be applicable for vegans, so here’s a recipe for a substitute cheese sauce that I primarily use for mac and cheese and lasagna. I know that there is plenty of vegan food that misses the mark, but I have yet to host a dinner guest who has not gone back for seconds when using this recipe.

Businessman is So Moved By Homeless Man’s Story, He Offers Him a Job On the Spot

An act of good faith from a Good Samaritan has spurred an outpouring of kindness for a 25-year-old homeless man.

Ryan Davidson was asking passerby for change in Newcastle, England last week when James Minns was out celebrating his wedding anniversary with his wife and two friends. In addition to giving the young rough sleeper £20 for food and a drink, Minns started asking Davidson about his life.

Davidson explained that he had been out of work and homeless for three years. He also didn’t have any contact with his family.

Moved by the young man’s attitude and situation, Minns decided to take a chance on him.

Minns asked Davidson, “If you were offered a job, would you take it?” Davidson replied, “One hundred percent.”

Minns, who works at a paint-coating company, told Davidson to show up for work on Monday at 7AM.

The new acquaintances took a selfie which the businessman posted to his Facebook page, explaining the fortuitous situation.

The post garnered thousands of responses, all from readers who offered up their congratulations and assistance. A relative of Davidson’s sent a contact phone number to Minns so he could call Davidson in advance. A local milkman even saw the photo and offered to give the new employee a ride to work.

Everyone’s optimism took a blow, however, when Davidson stopped answering his phone and missed his ride to work.

Though Minns’s Facebook community was disheartened by the bad news, they were overjoyed to see Davidson’s face in another photo the following day.

“Look who’s here,” read the photo caption. “First day at work for Ryan. Over the moon to see him. Hopefully the beginning of great things for him”

According to the BBC, Davidson had been forced to attend an emergency housing appointment on Monday morning, and he had been unable to tell Minns because his cell phone had run out of credit.

Now, since starting at his new job, Davidson said he couldn’t be happier.

“I love my job and everybody has made me feel so welcome,” Davidson told the news outlet. “We’re like one big happy family.”

“It has opened my eyes to how generous and kind people can be,” he added. “I’ve never met anyone like James – he has changed my life completely.”

Minns and his community are now raising money to get Davidson into permanent housing and off the streets.

How to Make Your Life Non-Negotiable, and Use Your Story As Fuel Instead of a Fortress

The Lesson: In her incredibly gripping talk, transformational speaker Lisa Nichols shares provocative truths about how to slowly step into the person you’ve always known yourself to be. Through poignant anecdotes, she highlights highly effective techniques such as “failing forward”, “I am” statements, and celebrations of “micro-wins” as essential to transcending one’s current circumstances. In this must-watch talk, Nichols enumerates the changes necessary to build a successful life newly defined by a richly holistic abundance of wealth, satisfying relationships, spirituality, and health.

Notable Excerpt: “Abundant thinkers continue to stay in cognitive dissonance. Let me explain to you what that is. Cognitive dissonance is the form of discomfort that you put yourself in when you think of yourself in such a way that doesn’t match your current behavior. Flood of Boston Hospitality Stuns Polite Tourist Looking for Hotspots

Some city natives might be predisposed to looking down on tourists and the pedestrian traffic that comes with them, but when this English man posted an earnest online inquiry about how to spend his vacation in Boston, the internet rose to the occasion with unparalleled warmth and hospitality.

30-year-old Sam Riding has been giddy with excitement over what is about to be his first vacation in six years. On July 16th, he will be flying from his home in Liverpool to Boston, Massachusetts for a one-week holiday.

So in preparation for his journey, Riding wrote out an endearing plea on Reddit for the best recommendations that a local could provide.

“Boston and my home city of Liverpool have a lot in common,” says Riding. “Vibrant port city, lots of Irish influence and a boundless passion for good music and sport. Frankly, I know I’m going to have a whale of a time in your great city, but other than Salem’s Witch Museum, my hetero-life-mate and I aren’t really for the tourist trail.

“To be honest, I intend to quietly booo at Revolutionary War monuments, since us Brits are actually still super bitter over our rough break up in 1775-6 (Just kidding),” he added.

Riding goes on to emphasize that with all the love and respect that he has for the proud New England city, he would rather avoid the kitschey tourist attractions and get to the heart of the hotspots that are beloved by locals.

“I know it’s a big thing to give up your secret eateries and bars, but I swear I’m only there for a week and I won’t steal your favorite barstool from you,” writes Riding. “Any recommendations will be taken gratefully into consideration and I’ll be sure to buy you all a beer if we bump into one another.”

As it turns out, Riding didn’t have to pry that hard for a response. His online appeal was so humorous, earnest, and filled with flattery, he has since been flooded with suggestions, directions, welcome notes, and adoration from users who are appreciative of his remarks.

In fact, his post ended up getting so much attention, The Boston Globe actually reached out to the Liverpudlian so they could get a take on all of the responses. He says that he understands why people might be put off by tourists, but there are mutual benefits to the exchange.

“I don’t think it’s entirely unjust that tourists have such a negative reputation,” he told the news outlet. “So many people get wrapped up in the temporary nature of their stay that they forget they’re surrounded by hundreds of thousands of other human beings, just trying to get on with their everyday lives.”

“[But] people often take a great deal of pride in where they live and it’s not unusual for them to want to show it off to visitors; especially when they’re respectful and courteous,” he added. “[And with] every independent coffee shop you recommend to us, every time you point us towards farmers markets packed with the produce of hardworking local farmers, every incidence of dragging us away from generic tourist traps, you’re enriching Boston.”

In the mean time, Riding has already made dozens of new friends and plans in preparation of his trip – and he already feels like he has received the warmest American welcome possible.

“I didn’t think I could be more excite to visit Boston, but I was wrong, seeing how witty, friendly and fun-loving you all are has me absolutely over the moon to be jetting over in a fortnight,” writes Riding. “See you soon Boston, I love you already!”

Celebrations Erupt After Dramatic Rescue of 12 Boys From Submerged Cave 2 Miles Deep

After an emotionally turbulent 18-day ordeal, all 12 of the Thai boys who were trapped in an elaborate cave system with their assistant coach have been rescued and brought to safety.

The boys, who are all members of the Wild Boars soccer team, had been exploring the Tham Luang caves in Thailand with their 25-year-old soccer coach when rising water levels trapped them inside of the caverns. As the tunnels continued to flood, the group was forced further and further inside the system until they had traveled 2 and a half miles into the caves.

For nine days, the boys and their coach were stranded without food before they were finally located by rescuers. The intricacy of the tunnel system, however, made rescuing the group far more difficult.

In addition to 40 Thai scuba divers being called in for the extraction mission, over 50 international divers flew in to Thailand to offer their assistance. Since each boy was weakened by their physical conditions and none of them had very much diving experience, they were each escorted out by a team of two divers – one in front of each boy, and one behind.

Though the boy was connected to the divers via a length of safety line, the inlets often became so narrow that the rescuers would have to remove their own oxygen tanks so they could maneuver them separately through the tunnels.

Eight of the boys were rescued on Sunday and Monday. The last four youngsters and their coach were rescued today after a 9-hour extraction mission. Once the last of the rescue divers had resurfaced from the cave a little while later, along with the doctor who so bravely looked after the kids for the last nine days, the world breathed a sigh of relief.

According to CBS News, local government officials, volunteers, spectators, and journalists all erupted in cheers once they heard news of the boys’ successful rescue.

“We are not sure if this is a miracle, a science, or what. All the thirteen Wild Boars are now out of the cave,” the SEALs wrote on Facebook. “Everyone is safe.”

The soccer members were rushed to a hospital in Chiang Mei city where they are now recovering from their ordeal. While two of the boys have been diagnosed with slight lung infections and possible signs of pneumonia, most of the youngsters are in good spirits and relatively good health.

The team had originally been invited to the World Cup Final, but due to their weakened state, they will be required to stay in the hospital during the coming week – although, the boys’ favorite team, Manchester United, have invited them to stop by for one of their games next season.
