Post-9/11 Charity Started with $500, Now Has Given $150Mil to Assist Wounded Veterans

The Semper Fi Fund, a top-rated veteran nonprofit that celebrated its 13th anniversary in May, is thrilled to announce that it has reached a major milestone. The Fund has passed the $150 million mark in providing assistance to post-9/11 service members and their families.

“It seems like only yesterday that a handful of us, a small group of military spouses at Camp Pendleton, met around my kitchen table with $500 and a desire to help our wounded coming home from Iraq,” said Semper Fi Fund President, CEO and Founder Karen Guenther.

Helping just three service members and their families back then, the charity has since served 18,500 veterans and 10,000 families — a number which continues to grow every day.

RELATEDFirst Ever Quadriplegic Treated With Stem Cells Regains Motor Control in His Upper Body

Designed to help wounded, critically ill, and injured members of all branches of the Armed Forces, the nonprofit provides direct financial assistance for expenses, such as medical bills, hotel rooms for family members at the bedside, and living essentials that are most pressing for a wounded service member during a long hospitalization or rehabilitation. Support continues after initial injury to include housing assistance, apprenticeship skills, rehabilitative sports programs, like mountain biking and golf, and PTSD support.

Since its inception in 2004, the Semper Fi Fund has prided itself on low overhead averaging at six percent on average, no red tape, and quick and relevant assistance. As a result, charity watchdogs have given the Semper Fi Fund their highest ratings for six consecutive years. The Fund is one of only two veteran nonprofits to receive and A+ from Charity Watch, and it gets a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator.

Dog Insists On Saving Every Stranded Earthworm, Gently Lifting Them Onto the Grass

This 2-year-old pup does not care how small an animal is – she is determined to save every single one of them.

Whenever Holliday the German shepherd/border collie mix goes on a walk with her owner Caitlyn Beebe, she makes sure to rescue all of the earthworms that are stranded on the hot dry pavement.

“She gently picks them up in her mouth and then carries them over to the grass,” says Beebe.

“On walks, she will run around the neighborhood and look for stray earth worms and bugs to save. She will spot the worms far in advance, and run over as fast as she can to save them. Sometimes, she even tries to save the dried, dead ones.”

Beebe, who adopted Holliday from the Felines and Canines Animal Shelter in Chicago, says that she is not sure where the hound picked up the peculiar habit, but she thinks her mother must have been the catalyst.

“When she was a puppy, my mom would take the earth worms from the road and throw them in the grass. The only way I can think that Holliday learned this behavior, is from watching my mom when we came home for the weekends.”

Beebe recently recorded her dog’s life-saving behavior, and she says that she is delighted to share Holliday’s story in hopes that it will inspire others to show the same amount of compassion to creatures large and small.

Phone Service Providers Offering Free Text, Voice, and Data to Hurricane Victims

Phone service providers are unleashing some generosity for Hurricane Irma victims by offering free voice, text, and data credits until the storm passes.

T-Mobile is making it free to call and text from the United States to the Bahamas and hard-hit Turks and Caicos, as well as waiving roaming fees on calls and texts for customers. Additionally, they are offering free calling, texting, and unlimited data for Florida customers who are not on T-Mobile ONE, which already gives customers unlimited phone service.

Not to be outdone, Verizon has pledged to waive all voice, data, and text charges for customers in the affected areas. A list of the zip codes participating in the offer can be found here.

“We’ll continue to assess the impact on customers in additional locations.”

I Transformed Haunting Memories By Returning to Those Places With Gifts

I was a heroin addict the last time I walked the sidewalks of this California beach town. I ruined my relationship with the girl of my dreams, but recently got a second chance to do it over.

While the town is outwardly beautiful, I worried about how I would react passing by, once again, the street corners and hang-outs that haunted my memory of this place.

My girlfriend, Jess, suggested that together we could transform these locations, by returning there with gifts and joyful hearts. We loaded up her truck with flowers to give away, bottles of water to hand out, and a stack of yellow paper with inspirational messages printed out for anyone who looked like they could use new perspective on life.

The first stop confirmed the brilliance of this idea. We parked next to a small home where I previously bought dope. The mailbox was right next to the sidewalk, so we placed inside the yellow motivational message, some flowers, and a personal note of forgiveness to let the man know how his dealing of heroin had affected one of his customers.

POPULARRick Steves Sacrifices Nest Egg to House Dozens of Homeless Women and Kids

We said a prayer, lingered awhile kissing at the front gate, and when we turned to leave, my girlfriend exclaimed, “Look at those elephant ears! I used to grow those back in Florida.”

Then a woman’s voice came through the open front door saying, “You like my elephant ears?”

“Oh, yes,” replied Jess, who began to engage a kindhearted woman in chatter about gardening. The small yard was well-tended with a variety of tropical flowers and shrubs that she described for us.

“Do you want to take some home? They are growing all over the place,” she said as she pointed to all the baby elephant ears that had sprung up around the porch.

Jess was thrilled and entered the gate to go look. The middle-aged woman, who we’ll call Deborah, grabbed a small silver pail and a trowel and began digging out three little baby plants from the dark, rich soil. She said her mother-in-law, who owned the home, was sitting in a chair just inside the door.

RELATEDFormer Addict Cuts Homeless People’s Hair and Spreads Joy of Rehab

While she dug, I grabbed the flowers from the mailbox, which she likely hadn’t noticed, and waited to hand them to her as a gift in return. Then, my girlfriend asked if we could get a photo to remember this amazing moment on Peach Street—which now held a significance that Deborah might never know.

We walked away in a giddy daze, quite stunned at the lovely turn of events, and we knew that whenever we drove past this house in the future, we would remember the blissful encounter with Deborah.

Transforming a traumatic memory by revisiting the location and creating an alternate reality was a great idea! We moved on to a bus stop, where we met a homeless man, gave him snacks and water, and engaged him in a long conversation, vigorously shaking his hand before hopping back into the truck.

Next was a park where drunks and junkies hung out; also on site were a couple families and teens just playing basketball. We brought a neon yellow frisbee to help reengineer the energy of this place, and began running and tossing it back and forth. After 20 minutes, we handed out more water, snacks, blessings and inspiring words. With his wife sitting in a lawn chair next to him holding the flowers we’d just handed her, a large man named Frank gave my girlfriend a big bear hug and assured me that all it took to stay clean was a strong connection to the spiritual being within my own heart.

WATCHTherapy Wolves Become Guides for Troubled Teens

At one of the last stops, an Alcoholics Anonymous hall where I used to attend meetings—but also get into trouble—we found that a gorgeous new arts center had sprung up next door. Out front was a fierce ten-foot high metal sculpture of a dragon and a bird that overlooked the sidewalk. It was a fitting symbol of rebirth.

Quenching the addictive fire in my personality was something I had been striving to do for many years, and birdwatching was a hobby I’d shared with my beloved whenever times were good.

The dragon is a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it. If I can remain honest and disciplined, I think I can finally believe that I am worthy, no matter what street corner I find myself on.

Check out These Amazing Dutch Parade Floats Covered in Flowers

There is more than meets the eye on these dazzling parade floats – each one is covered with 500,000 dahlia flowers.

The 81st annual Corso Zundert parade in the little Dutch village of Zundert continued its flowery tradition last week by showcasing 20 awe-inspiring floats.

This year’s winner was Buurtschap Schijf, a volunteer organization whose massive Amazonian sculpture was supported and “worshipped” by 260 costumed participants. It is the first time that Schijf has won first prize, according to the Corso Zundert website.

Citizens of the Netherlands take the parade very seriously, and usually start designing ideas for the wagons immediately after the competition ends – with 363 days to plan for the next celebration.

Between the months of May and August, teams of competing workers construct the frames, and await the feverish scramble the night before the parade, when fresh flowers are finally nailed into place.

“By the First Sunday of September, the fever burns within us,” the Corso Zundert website reads. “Will the moving floats be finished in time? Are there enough dahlias? And who is going to win this time?”

The first Zundert flower parade in 1936 honored Queen Wilhelimina’s birthday, but the ‘parade’ only consisted of a modest bicycle and farmer’s cart. Since the village is known for having over 50 different species of dahlias, the idea of a larger flower parade eventually blossomed.

In order to keep a cap on the competitive craziness, the judges have limited the float size to 62 feet long, 15 meters wide, and 30 feet tall.

Because of its historical significance in the Netherlands, winning the trophy for best float is considered to be one of the greatest honors a Dutch citizen can receive in their lifetime.

Tesla Remotely Extends Range of its Vehicles in Florida to Help Hurricane Irma Evacuees

Tech giant Tesla has just assisted Floridian homeowners in fleeing the evacuation zone of Hurricane Irma – and gave up a couple thousand dollars of income in the process.

The sustainable car company reportedly confirmed with Electrek that they have remotely unlocked the full travel range of Model S/X 60/60D vehicles with 75 kWh battery packs.

Originally, the cars come locked at a 60 kWh battery range with the option of upgrading to 75. At 60 kWhs, the cars are less expensive but have a shorter range of travel. Car owners could upgrade to the 75 kWhs battery capacity, although this would cost between $4000–$9,000.

Man Gives $25Mil to Ease Debt for Students of Social Work: ‘They’re Heroes’

Steve Hicks, a telecommunications pioneer and University of Texas Regent, has donated what might be the largest ever gift in higher education toward the field of social work to help alleviate the debt for those he said are doing “God’s work.”

“Social work students commit to dedicate their lives to service and enriching the lives of others” said Gregory Fenves, president of The University of Texas at Austin. “By investing in our social work students, Steve Hicks is investing in a fabric that binds communities together.”

The gift will cement the Texas school’s standing as one of the top 10 graduate programs of social work in the country by significantly expanding the financial support offered to students, enhancing research and teaching in the field of addictions, and developing new programs to equip students with skills in fundraising and philanthropy that are essential for nonprofit and managerial fields.

In recognition, the university will name the department the Steve Hicks School of Social Work.

“I have historically given to organizations that help other people, and helping others is the true essence of social work. When I decided that I wanted to make a lifetime gift, the School of Social Work was the perfect fit, where I thought I could make the most impact,” Hicks told the University. “I am not a social worker, but I understand the need to reduce student debt burden so that social work graduates can stay in their careers doing what they love and positively affecting the lives of thousands of people.”

Attaining a degree in this field can leave students $45,000 in debt, which cannot be easily paid off on the typical social work salary— a significant hurdle that discourages many talented people from entering or staying in the profession.

“Thanks to his generosity, more individuals regardless of socioeconomic background will be able to respond to their social work calling with less concern about student debt and will have more freedom after graduating to pursue their passion for helping others and changing the world for the better,” said Luis H. Zayas, dean of the School of Social Work.

The gift totals $25 million, of which $10 million will go to establish a permanent endowment to support student scholarships. Another $5 million will be used as matching funds to encourage additional gifts to support the education of future social workers. The remaining $10 million of the gift will be used to enhance social work education in the fields of addictions, fundraising and philanthropy.

While Hurricane Irma may be about to wreak havoc on the homes and properties of Florida and surrounding states, the storm has also provided a reason for people to come together in meaningful ways.

One such scene unfolded in front of a TV news reporter who captured the moment on her phone.

Pam Brekke had traveled almost 30 miles to buy one of the 200 generators just shipped to the hardware store in Orlando, Florida yesterday in preparation for expected power outages.

Pam was next in line at the Lowe’s store to purchase one of the gas-powered generators when she was told that the final unit went to the customer standing in front of her in line. She broke down in tears.

For medical reasons, her father relies on an oxygen pump that requires electrical power. Suddenly, a total stranger, Ramon Santiago, saw her crying, and walked over to insist that she take his.

Adventurous Toy Ship Sails From Scotland to Scandinavia

This little toy ship is now well on its way to sailing the seven seas after it somehow managed to travel all the way from Scotland to Scandinavia.

The custom-designed sailboat was created by the young Ferguson brothers—8-year-old Ollie and 5-year-old Harry—as a means of completing their bucket list dream of enabling a toy ship to travel the ocean.

In order to make sure that their vessel could withstand the salty sea, however, they had to make a few modifications to the little plastic toy. The youngsters gave the boat a counterweight to keep it from tipping over and a hull full of polystyrene so it would stay afloat.

Then, they named the ship Adventure and sent it on its way.

The boat also carried a note that asked anyone who found the vessel to place it back in the sea and let the Fergusons know where it had traveled. While launching the Playmobil ship from their home in Turiff had been one of their bucket list goals, they never expected it to make it as far as it did.

The family chronologically received responses from residents in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway before news outlets started reporting on Adventure’s travels.

The Norwegian conservation vessel that found the ship in northern waters now reportedly plans on carrying Adventure with them until they can launch the boat into the Atlantic.

“I was concerned that the currents along the coast would take it down the north east coast of Scotland, so I was over the moon when it made a beeline for Scandinavia,” Harry and Ollie’s dad told the BBC.

“The boys have enjoyed it and every time we get a message telling us where it has landed we get on the computer and work out where it went, so they are tracking its progress on the map and it gives them an understanding of how big the world is.”

Drinking Coffee Might Give You a 64% Better Chance at Living Longer Than Those Who Don’t, Study Says

If you are someone who starts out their day with a fresh cup of coffee – or two, or three, or four cups, for that matter – you may be more likely to live longer than your caffeine-averse counterparts.

A new study conducted by the European Society For Cardiology has linked increased coffee consumption in a region of Europe with longevity.

“Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages around the world,” said Dr. Adela Navarro, a cardiologist at Hospital de Navarra, Pamplona, Spain. “Previous studies have suggested that drinking coffee might be inversely associated with all-cause mortality but this has not been investigated in a Mediterranean country.”

CHECK OUT: 100-Year-olds Say a Positive Attitude is the Secret to Longevity

The study involved roughly 20,000 participants who were 37 years or older over the course of 10 years. Upon factoring in additional dietary, sociological, and medical factors, the researchers found that participants who consumed four cups of coffee displayed “a 64% lower risk of all-cause mortality than those who never or almost never consumed coffee”.

For every additional two cups of coffee that the participants consumed, their risk of mortality dropped by a further 22%.

“Our findings suggest that drinking four cups of coffee each day can be part of a healthy diet in healthy people,” says Navarro.

RELATEDWe’ll Toast to This: Drinkers Are More Likely to Live to 85 Without Dementia, Study Says

While the study’s positive results might simply be a correlation, rather than causation, this is not the first piece of research that has examined coffee’s health benefits. A similar study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition on Mediterranean adults found that habitual coffee drinkers were 54% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

Another study found that – when paired with a certain breast cancer drug – two cups of coffee actually lowered the risk of breast cancer recurrences in women.

Further research may be necessary to prove that coffee can make you immortal – but in the meantime, feel free to pour yourself another cuppa.

Free Solar Panels to Be Installed on 800K Low-income UK Households

Over 800,000 low-income houses in England and Wales are to have free solar panels installed on their rooves over the course of the next five years.

The $208 million (£160 million) initiative, which is being financed by the Dutch firm Maas Capital, is expected to save the residents an average of $312 (£240) on their energy bills every year.

UK firm Solarplicity will be partnering with over 40 landlords and social housing representatives in order to properly coordinate the panels’ installation.

Additionally, since the initiative will create 1,000 new UK jobs, the firm plans on hiring and retraining military veterans for their workforce.

“After a record year for new foreign investment into the UK, this initial £160 million capital expenditure program will deliver massive benefits to some of the UK’s poorest households,” said International Trade minister Greg Hands. “As well as creating 1,000 jobs and delivering cheaper energy bills for up to 800,000 homes, it shows yet another vote of confidence in the UK as a place to invest and do business.”

The initiative is just one in 2,200 foreign investments that have been made in the United Kingdom, which has resulted in a record-breaking year of expenditure. 87 of these projects alone were in the renewable energy sector, creating over 3,000 new jobs.

“Today’s announcement is a reflection of our exciting growth in the energy market, backed by international capital investment through DIT,” said Solarplicity CEO David Elbourne. “Solarplicity is committed to reducing energy bills for both solar and non-solar customers.
