Trouble Sleeping? The ‘Dullest Movie Ever Made’ was Filmed to be a Perfect Cure For Insomnia

This 8-hour film gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, “counting sheep”.

Baa Baa Land, created by the producers of the hit meditation app Calm, will surely to go down as “the dullest movie ever made” because the main goal was to help people fall asleep.

The movie is composed entirely of soothing shots of sheep standing in fields – and that’s about it. No dialogue, no plot, no conflict, no characters; just bewetiful slow-motion content and the calming soundtrack of sheep noises.

The film will premiere at the Prince Charles Cinema in London’s West End – and online via the Calm website – this September.

RELATEDNew Best-selling Book Designed to Put Children to Sleep in Minutes

“It’s better than any sleeping pill – the ultimate insomnia cure”, says Alex Tew, Baa Baa Land’s executive producer and co-founder of Calm.

According to the film’s representatives, Baa Baa Land only ranks as the 19th longest film ever made. (The longest movie ever recorded is Logistics: an avant-garde Swedish project that is apparently 857 hours long.) However, the filmmakers claim that this may be the first ever feature-length flick that has been produced by an app company.

“We’re in discussion about U.S., and wider, distribution and in talks with an American TV channel,” says Michael Acton Smith, its other executive producer and Calm’s co-founder. “We don’t expect it to break box-office records but [we] believe there is at least a niche audience for it.”

While the movie does jump on the coat tails of the recent Oscar-award winning hit La La Land, there is no relation between the two films, as none of the sheep break out into song or dance. Maybe they should have called it Silence of the Lambs II.

Goals of Paris Agreement May Be Met Sooner Than Expected

The precipitous drop in costs for renewable energy technology—even from prices a few years ago—means that carbon emissions may decrease faster and hit the targets earlier than those envisioned by the Paris Climate Agreement. Here are three technologies making that happen:

1. Solar – the average price of a MWh of electricity from solar cells has dropped from $394 in 2009 to $55 today. Solar accounted for 39% of all new electric generating capacity last year, topping all other methods for the first time.

2. Wind – the cost of wind power has likewise dropped dramatically, from an average of $135 per megawatt-hour in 2009 to $47. Wind energy is currently generated in 41 of the 50 U.S. states, with capacity of 82,000 megawatts, double the amount 6 years ago.

CHECK OUT: India Plants Record-breaking 66 Million Trees in 12 Hours

3. Electric Vehicles (EVs) – the changes in EV availability, cost, range and customer acceptance are remarkable.

EVs like the Tesla 3 and Chevy Bolt have a range of over 200 miles. Even the 25-30 mile range of many new plug-in hybrids covers over 80% of the trips most people take, with the gasoline engine available for the remainder. The cost of the new Tesla and Bolt is around $35,000, yet the average cost of a new car in the US this year is $34,000. Over 20 new EVs will be introduced in the next year, with the cost per mile for electricity usually less than half the cost of gasoline, depending on fuel costs in each area.

Recharging EV batteries takes less time today; some of the newer technologies can charge batteries to 80% capacity in 30 minutes or less—which makes the growing network of recharging stations at restaurants and highway stops more pertinent.

MORE: Company is Offering to Retrain Coal Miners as Wind Farmers For Free

Tesla’s Model X was tested as the safest SUV ever, of any type. Without a gasoline motor or transmission, EVs can have larger ‘crumple zones’ and the batteries under the floor create a lower center of gravity reducing roll-overs. They often accelerate faster than gasoline-powered cars because of the greater range of torque in electric motors.

Non-hybrid EVs also win the maintenance test since they have no transmission, engine, radiator, water pump, oil pump, etc. to service. Because of their simplicity and the reliability of electric motors, EVs may last 500,000 miles or more.

While coal currently provides about 30% of US electricity, that number is declining with each passing year. In contrast, the share of renewables is growing rapidly and will surpass coal, perhaps sooner rather than later. Thus, as time goes on, EVs will be even better for the environment as their source fuel becomes cleaner.

RELATED10-Year-old Boy Invents Device That Will Save Children From Hot Cars

The economic momentum of renewably-powered cars is also moving governments to support the trend. India’s new policy is that the country will sell only EVs by 2030. China is singing the same tune, with new requirements and support of their own EV industry. Britain and France just announced an end to fossil fuel cars in their countries by 2040.

Wayne Parker is a consultant who helped develop one of the earliest electric car competitions and was Deputy Director of California’s SolarCal office. He lives in Eugene, Oregon now and has a Tesla Model 3 on order. (Find him on LinkedIn)

World’s First Floating Ocean Wind Farm is Set to Start Powering European Coastline

Inspired by the oil and gas rigs that can weather the strongest storms, a flotilla of wind turbines is being assembled in deep waters off the northeastern coast of Scotland.

Destined to become the first floating wind farm in the world, two of the five turbines have just been moved into place by the Norwegian alternative energy company Statoil.

The turbines, stationed 15 miles offshore, are not only to designed to withstand gale force winds, but their placement will avoid the visual impact of land-based wind farms, which often repel community support along coastal areas.

MOREWorld’s Largest Vertical Garden Near NYC Uses 95% Less Water and No Pesticides

All the five turbines that will power the Peterhead Wind Farm will soar overhead at 575 feet tall (175m) atop a flotation base with a depth of 229 feet (70m). Located 15 miles offshore, the farm will power over 20,000 Scottish homes.

Typical offshore turbines can only be planted in water that reaches 130 feet (40 meters) deep. The Peterhead farm, however, raises hopes that offshore windmills can be productive in deeper ocean shelves like those surrounding the U.S. and Japan.

The farm is also being lauded by animal conservationists as an environmental victory, since offshore windmills are unlikely to endanger sea birds that nest along the coastlines.

Watch Coma Survivor Stand Up to Kiss His Wife for the First Time After Doctors Doubted He Would Live

Just days before his fifth wedding anniversary, Jonny Grant was the victim of a car accident that left him in a coma. Doctors were unsure of whether he would ever wake up, much less move.

Because he sustained a diffuse axonal injury, he was given a 10% chance of survival.

Two months after the accident, however, he awoke from the coma.

Through intensive physical therapy at a Richmond, Virginia rehabilitation center, the Navy SEAL has slowly regained motor control. Though he is still unable to use his vocal cords, he communicates with his wife Laura by softly mouthing his words.

Country Passes Landmark Law Banning ‘All Violence Against Women’

Tunisia’s parliament has passed new legislation to end “all violence against women”, a move that could set a precedent for human rights in the region.

The new rules, which will likely become law next year, govern “any physical, moral, sexual or economic aggression (based on discrimination)” against women.

Because the law requires authorities to refer women to shelters if they are fleeing violence, the state will require funding assistance to add more facilities for the women.

The bill will also eliminate the controversial rule in Tunisia that allowed a man to escape punishment for committing rape if they marry their victim.

Other countries that are pushing such reforms include Morocco, which is debating a law on domestic abuse, and Algeria, which adopted a law last year that criminalizes violence against women, according to France24 news.

Surprising Results When People Were Asked if They’d Be Happier Adopting a Pet Than Winning the Lottery

This shocking new research might just prove that money can’t buy happiness.

In order to raise awareness about the importance of adopting shelter animals, PetSmart Charities conducted a survey on how pets affected people’s happiness.

The results? 66% said that adopting a pet would bring them more long-term happiness than winning the lottery.

Additionally, 64% said that losing their pets would be worse than losing their jobs, and 92% said that their children turned to their pets as an invaluable source of comfort during times of stress. About three quarters of the participants said that pets were even more helpful than therapists.

Other listed benefits of pet parenting included improved mood, decreased stress, increased physical activity, weight loss, and enhanced work-life balance.

The survey goes on to emphasize that the more people know about the benefits of adoption, the more likely Americans will be to adopt one of the 6.5 million animals admitted to shelters every year. Since the PetSmart Charities adoption program began in the 90s, the organization has helped more than 7.5 million animals find loving homes.

“The results of the PetSmart Charities-commissioned survey speak volumes about the human-animal bond and the tremendous value pets bring to our everyday lives,” said Dr. David Haworth, president of PetSmart Charities. “Once they are adopted, not only do they provide unconditional love and support, but pets have also become irreplaceable members of our families and an essential part of our physical and emotional well-being.”

Cops Give Scathing Review of Bear’s Piano Skills on Surveillance Footage

This furry intruder exhibited some pretty impressive breaking and entering skills – but his talent for music wasn’t as impressive.

In fact, it was downright “unbearable”, according to local police representatives.

21-year-old Katie Hawley was terrified when she returned to her Vail, Colorado apartment last month only to find that an intruder had wreaked havoc on her kitchen.

Upon calling the Vail Police Department, officers arrived on the scene and declared that the mess was most likely caused by an animal. Hawley then reviewed security camera footage and found a bewildering sight.

A black bear had expertly unlocked the student’s kitchen window and snuck into the apartment like the Pink Panther.

The intruder then devoured some fruits hidden in the freezer, ate a massive bag of chocolate, chugged some maple syrup, and unscrewed – yes, carefully unscrewed with its paws – a jar of peanut butter, which it then slurped up in its entirety.

Despite the stunning dexterity with which it conducted its heist, the bear then wandered over to the apartment’s piano and stomped out a cringeworthy chord.

To be fair, the bear did not have thumbs with which to conduct its concerto, but its performance was still far from pawesome.

Vail police, on the other hand, held such disdain for “Bearthoven”, that they wrote a crippling review of the melody on a state website, along with a warning and how-to guide on bear-proofing a home.

“Following the report to police, the resident checked her internal camera system, which captured the event on video,” wrote the Vail Police Department. “The bear was seen wandering around the apartment and at one point went to a piano putting its paws on the keys playing a few notes.”

“The chords captured on video were unbearable and the tune was equally grizzly, according to police. Although officers searched the area, the suspect is still at large.”

Iran Plans to Decriminalize Drug Use Allowing the Nation to Help its Addicts

Iranian lawmakers have passed the motion to decriminalize drug use so they can help their addicts heal, instead of punishing them.

While the Judicial and Legal Commission is still working on the exact legislation, the proposal will allow the government to hand out diluted substances to drug users, thus cutting off the relationship between addicts and traffickers.

By legalizing the distribution of methadone – a prescription opiate used to treat heroin addiction – drug users can be better equipped to wean themselves off of their habits.

Some international governments may still be wary of decriminalization – but countries like Portugal can put their worries to rest.

14 years after decriminalizing heroine, the nation’s drug use fell by about a third, heroine addiction rates were cut in half, and drug-related deaths decreased by 75%.

“Given the special emphasis that the Establishment’s macro-policies put on the necessity of cutting off the relationship between drug addicts and narco-traffickers, we decided that the government hand out diluted drugs to addicts, so that they will be able to give up their addiction gradually and, instead of being drawn to drug-traffickers, turn to the Establishment and meet their needs through official channels,” said Hassan Norouzi, the spokesperson for the Parliament’s Judicial and Legal Commission, according to IFP News.

Veterans Build a Bridge For Family Who Carries Wheelchair-Bound Mom Through the Woods

These two veterans weren’t about to let a local widow struggle through the woods with her wheelchair-bound mother every day – so they took matters into their own hands.

Whenever Belinda Hart had to take her mother – who has Alzheimers in addition to living in a wheelchair – to doctor’s appointments, they would have to make their way across a creek using two narrow sections of logs.

Due to recent flooding in the area, the logs were swept away, leaving the Harts with no easy access to the road. Without the makeshift bridge, Belinda and her mother would have to cross the creek manually – a treacherous route for anyone, let alone someone handling a wheelchair.

But then, when Sam Warner and Flenoy Barrow of the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization in Calloway County, Kentucky heard about the Harts’ predicament, they took it upon themselves to build their own bridge for the family.

“We’re proud, at our age and physical health, we’re able to do this for people,” Warner told WPSD.

World’s Largest Air Purifier Transforms Chinese Smog into Actual Diamonds

This shimmering park tower isn’t just a glamorous piece of architecture: it is the largest air purifier in the world, and it is turning China’s smog into diamonds.

The tower is a 23-foot tall metal structure that is capable of filtering 75% of harmful PM2.5 and PM10 particles from the surrounding air, thus producing 30,000 cubic meters of clean air per hour. This creates a bubble of air around the tower, offering smog-free solace to urban dwellers.

According to the tower’s creator Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde, the Chinese smog that is accumulated by the air filter is the equivalent of smoking 17 cigarettes per day.

Plus, by using ion technology, the tower uses very little electricity – about as much as an electric kettle. The electricity that it does use, however, comes from wind power.

CHECK OUT: World’s Largest Vertical Farm Near NYC Uses 95% Less Water and No Pesticides

The air filter, which was built as a part of Roosegaarde‘s Smog Free Project, sucks up the tiny particles of carbon from the air and turns the substance into diamonds. The diamonds are then used to make jewelry that is sold to help finance the construction of new towers and filtration products.

The tower was originally installed in Rotterdam, before being transferred to Beijing last year, followed by Tianjin, and then the World Economic Forum in Dalian, China last month. Soon, Roosegaarde hopes to move the tower to more polluted cities in India.

In addition to the tower, the Smog Free Project has started developing the Smog Free Bicycle: a contraption that circulates the air in front of the user so that they can travel in a relatively smog-free bubble of clean air.

MOREIKEA Releases Free Design For Garden Sphere That Feeds a Neighborhood

“Beijing used to be an iconic bicycle city,” said Roosegaarde. “Together with Chinese and Dutch expertise we will bring back the bicycle as a cultural icon of China and as the next step towards smog free cities.”

“True beauty is clean air and it should not be taken for granted,” he continues. “Smog Free Project is a series of urban innovation to reduce pollution on the city scale, a package deal for Mayors for an immediate impact and lasting effect towards smog free cities.”

Instead of Punishment, Pizzeria Owner Reaches Out to Family Who Robbed Him

Misunderstandings on social media have led to some pretty ferocious witch hunts in the past – but this pizzeria owner is instead trying to use it for good.

Damian Penner, the owner of Rocco’s Pizzeria in Steinbach, Manitoba, found security footage of a woman and her four children stealing pizzas from his store on Sunday night.

The woman stood by the counter arguing with the cashier and pretending to ponder the menu while her children ran about the store, causing a ruckus.

When the employee became sufficiently flustered, the woman can be seen slipping four pre-made pizzas into her bag from a freezer. The family eventually left the restaurant only to return a few minutes later so the kids could snag more of the frozen pizzas while the mother talked to the cashier.

Judging by the footage, Penner is guessing that the children were meant to serve as a distraction.

Though he was initially upset about the theft of 7 to 8 pizzas, Penner considered that the mother may have just been stealing in order to feed her children.

The pizzeria owner then took to social media with a unique request.

“To the lady that stole 8 take and bake pizzas last night. We do not know the situation you are in, and don’t know if it was malicious, or to feed your children. But please, ask for help either way.

“You can’t continue to get your children to assist you in stealing, as they are young, impressionable, and still learning. You may feel like there is no other way, but regardless you have to parent, and can’t raise your children as an example like this. We wont post your picture, or go to the police, as this happened one time.

“Again, we don’t know the circumstances, and posting your photo would do nothing more than shame you in a community that is here to help you! If you need help, please come in and talk to me personally. We know of many resources out there, and work closely with many groups that can help lift you out of the circumstances you may be in!”

The post has since been shared over 300 times, but Penner says that the woman has not contacted him. Because he works with several church and charity organizations, however, he hopes that she will see the post and accept his offer of help.

“I’m a family man and this is a family that I don’t want to give unjust stress to, but would rather see the community try and help them out,” he told CBC in reference to deciding against posting the security footage.

“Putting her picture on social media is just going to [cause] shame. Rather than trying to shame somebody I want to try and give them a hand up.”

Bullied Teen Who Skipped Prom Gets Party of Her Own From 120 Bikers

This teen couldn’t bring herself to attend prom when she was being bullied so badly. Instead of a traditional school event, however, she was given a dazzling “biker ball”.

16-year-old Shannon Purcifer suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, bowel disease, celiac, and ulcerative colitis. Students at her Gosport, Hampshire school would bully her relentlessly for her medical issues, to the point where she even had to change her phone number.

So when prom rolled around, Purcifer knew that if she attended the event, she would just end up being miserable.

RELATEDBullying Rates Have Fallen By Half in the Last Decade – Study

“The night she was supposed to go to her prom she just did nothing. She tried the dress on but it was heart-breaking for her to choose not to go,” Purcifer’s mother Claire Carstens told the New York Post. “She had been looking forward to it for months and we bought the dress as far back as February but the bullying got so bad she knew she wouldn’t enjoy it if she went.

“She agonized over it for a while, but we knew maybe two months beforehand that her heart wasn’t in it. She’d had enough.”

On prom night, Carstens posted a picture of her daughter all decked out in her prom outfit to Facebook with a heartbreaking note.

MOREBoy Turns the Tables by Inviting His Bully to Pass Out Birthday Cookies Together

“If Shannon had gone to prom tonight she would of worn this beautiful dress. Thanks to nasty vile bullies, Shannon decided she didn’t want to go,” wrote Cartens. “For a girl that has had so much to deal with in life… celiac disease, ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis, she is one strong young lady with an even stronger mind!!”

The post was so moving, members of the community volunteered to help throw Purcifer a prom of her own.

After a GoFundMe page had raised the necessary funds for the event, the teen’s friends and family all attended the event.

Even more remarkably, however, 120 leather-clad bikers from the Gosport Scooter Club volunteered to personally escort Purcifer to the event.

Purcifer’s “biker ball” has been widely reported on since the event took place earlier this week – and judging by the photos, it was everything that the college-bound teen could want and more.

“This isn’t all about bad mouthing the school but the school certainly needs to sort out bullying as soon as they are aware of it. This is about showing all those nasty bullies that they won’t win and also showing anyone that is being bullied, there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” wrote Carstens on Facebook.

YouTube to Start Redirecting Searches for Terrorist Content to Anti-Hate Videos

Youtube is rolling out a new feature that will hopefully prove effective in fighting terrorism online.

If anyone uses YouTube to look up search terms matching extremism, supremacy, or terrorist recruiting videos, the Redirect feature will automatically send them to a playlist of videos that debunk hateful narratives.

The Redirect feature was originally developed by Jigsaw in partnership with Moonshot CVE. YouTube officials declined to disclose what kind of terms are flagged for having hateful intent, but company representatives said that the feature is a part of a much larger body of research conducted on how terrorist organizations use technology and social media to push their agendas.

In the coming months, YouTube plans on expanding the feature into different languages and creating new video content to combat extremism.

The enterprise is part of an ongoing alliance between major tech companies – such as Twitter, Microsoft, and Facebook – to address terrorism and extremism online. Last month, Google announced four other anti-terrorist initiatives it would be implementing.

For starters, the company has honed the classifying abilities of their analytics to better identify and remove extremist videos. Google has also recruited dozens of NGO experts who will be dedicating their expertise to improving the company’s anti-terrorist initiatives.

For videos that do not directly violate their criteria for extremist content, Google will be penalizing them by removing monetization, commenting, endorsement, and recommendation features.

“Terrorism is an attack on open societies, and addressing the threat posed by violence and hate is a critical challenge for us all,” wrote Google’s general counsel Kent Walker. “Google and YouTube are committed to being part of the solution. We are working with government, law enforcement and civil society groups to tackle the problem of violent extremism online. There should be no place for terrorist content on our services.”

8-Year-old Helps Buy New Wheelchair For His Best Buddy When Insurance Fails

If there was any doubt that Kamden Houshan and Paul Burnett would be friends forever, there certainly is not anymore.

The soon-to-be 3rd graders do everything together: from munching on McDonald’s happy meals, to playing at the park. The two have been nearly inseparable since they met in kindergarten several years ago.

So when Paul noticed that Kamden was struggling with his wheelchair, he didn’t hesitate to help.

Kamden became a paraplegic when he was born with a massive tumor embedded in his spine. Though doctors were able to remove the tumor in surgery, the 8-year-old boy was left paralyzed.

Kamden’s last wheelchair was so heavy and bulky, it prevented the youth from being able to freely maneuver household doorways. Since it could not fit into the bathroom, Kamden’s mother always had to carry him, which put excessive stress on her body.

Then in August, Kamden was able to test drive a lighter wheelchair model – and he was astounded by how much of a positive difference it made in his life. Unfortunately, insurance could not cover the cost of another wheelchair for another few years.

Meanwhile, Paul had learned about GoFundMe from watching YouTube videos. Upon hearing about his friend’s troubles, he asked his parents if he could start a campaign for his Kamden.

In a matter of weeks, Kamden’s page had raised $5,500 – roughly $2,000 more than their original goal.

“Thank you all for being part of this wonderful journey to get Kamden his wheelchair … Paul and Kamden have been all smiles knowing that Kamden is getting what he needs,” wrote Paul’s mother.

But I hope, with all my heart, that as you become a grown man, you will understand my methods and realize I’ve only done what is best for you and that I love you.”

“The last thing that I hope you learn is that you are a very special boy,” she says. “You are so extremely smart, handsome and kind to others. You have helped make me into the woman I am today, and I may not have given you the gift of life, but life surely gave me the gift of you.”

Throughout the speech, Gage is hugging her waist and crying over his stepmother’s kind words – and it is the sweetest thing you have ever seen.

Scotland Blows World Away With Wind Power Equal to 118% of Nation’s Electricity Needs

Scotland has just broken a renewable energy record by generating the equivalent of 118% of the nation’s electricity for six days – solely through wind power captured between January and June.

According to analysis provided by WWF Scotland, this year’s wind power output jumped by 25% compared to the same period in 2015.

This means that in June alone, over 1 million megawatts of electricity were generated by wind power. Since January, turbines have generated over 6.6 million megawatts – the equivalent of powering all 3 million of Scotland’s homes for six days.

CHECK OUT: Company is Offering to Retrain Coal Miners as Wind Farmers For Free

“The first six months of 2017 have certainly been incredible for renewables, with wind turbines alone helping to ensure millions of tons of climate-damaging carbon emissions were avoided,” Sam Gardner, WWF Scotland’s acting director, said in a statement.

“Scotland is continuing to break records on renewable electricity, attracting investment, creating jobs and tackling climate change. If we want to reap the same rewards in the transport and heating sectors we need the Scottish Government to put in place strong policies on energy efficiency and transport in the forthcoming Climate Change Bill.”

‘Text Me Any Masterpiece’—Send Museum a Topic and You’ll Get Corresponding Artwork in Response

This Museum of Modern Art is joining the digital age in a stunningly fun way.

The San Francisco museum has just introduced the Send Me SFMOMA: a service that allows you to request an artwork of a specific topic right through your phone.

For instance, if you text “Send me beaches” or “Send me New York City”, a bot will search the museum’s digitized collection of almost 35,000 works for a masterpiece related to your topic.

“In a world oversaturated with information, we asked ourselves: how can we generate personal connections between a diverse cross section of people and the artworks in our collection? How can we provide a more comprehensive experience of our collection?” wrote SFMoMA’s creative technologist Jay Mollica.

“Send Me SFMOMA was conceived as a way to bring transparency to the collection while engendering further exploration and discussion among users. Send Me SFMOMA is an SMS service that provides an approachable, personal, and creative method of sharing the breadth of SFMOMA’s collection with the public.”

Mollica says that only about 5% of SFMoMA’s collection is currently on display. If a viewer wanted to look at all the museum’s collective works, they would need another 17 museums equal to about 121 miles of spaces in order to house all of the art.

And with such a volume of content, they don’t expect typical viewers to be able to appreciate the works that interest them.

With the artbot, however, users are given a much more creative way of navigating thousands of artworks that are never seen by the public.

Since the beta service first launched, the artbot has reportedly sent over several million art texts—and they are expecting to send millions more.

“We don’t expect any single Send Me SFMOMA user to ever get through all 34,678 artworks in the collection. But what we have seen, and hope to continue to see, are thousands of people connecting with artwork in fun, new, and very personal ways.”

“Additionally, many of these artworks are currently in storage and rarely seen by the public. When you say ‘Send me a landscape’ you won’t get 791 landscapes, you’ll get a landscape chosen just for you. You may one day be able to visit your landscape in SFMOMA’s galleries, or you may be the only person to see it for years to come.”

If you live in the United States and you would like to test out the service, simply text a topic with “Send me…” to 57251.
