California is Protecting Youngsters From Air Pollution By Deploying Hundreds of Electric School Buses

Photo by the California Energy Commission

Hundreds of old diesel-powered school buses in California are set to be replaced with all-electric vehicles thanks to new funding from the state.

The California Energy Commission this week approved nearly $70 million in funding to replace more than 200 polluting school buses with all-electric buses that will reduce school children’s exposure to harmful emissions and help the state reach its climate and air quality goals.

“School buses are by far the safest way for kids to get to school – but diesel-powered buses are not safe for kids’ developing lungs, which are particularly vulnerable to harmful air pollution,” said Energy Commissioner Patty Monahan. “Making the transition to electric school buses that don’t emit pollution provides children and their communities with cleaner air and numerous public health benefits.

“The Energy Commission is proud to support this transition to protect the health of children throughout the state, something that will help all Californians breathe easier,” she added.

The Energy Commission’s School Bus Replacement Program is providing more than $94 million to public school districts, county offices of education, and joint power authorities to help transition from diesel school buses to zero- or low-emissions vehicles. Together with this week’s approved funding, the Energy Commission has awarded $89.8 million of the program’s funds to schools in 26 California counties.

The electric buses approved today will eliminate nearly 57,000 pounds of nitrogen oxides and nearly 550 pounds of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions annually.

Most of the Energy Commission’s awards support buses in disadvantaged, low-income communities, which are disproportionately affected by air pollution and health problems from poor air quality. 90% of the electric buses that will be distributed through the new program will be operating in disadvantaged communities.

In addition to the health benefits, the switch to electric will save schools money in fuel and repair costs. The Energy Commission estimates that schools will save nearly $120,000 in fuel and maintenance costs per bus over 20 years.

Diesel buses emit harmful pollutants, including fine particles that can lodge deep in the lungs and enter the bloodstream. Because children’s lungs are still developing, and due to their faster breathing rate and other factors, children are more susceptible to the adverse health effects linked to air pollution – including lung damage and asthma attacks. Scientists have even found that these fine particles can cause asthma in healthy children.

To help protect this vulnerable population, there are a number of state initiatives to replace diesel school buses – largely with electric buses.

These efforts include the statewide California Climate Investments (CCI) initiative that puts billions of cap-and-trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment. Projects funded through the CCI initiative to put electric school buses on the road include the California Air Resources Board (CARB)’s Rural School Bus Pilot Project, Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project, and Community Air Protection Program. CARB’s Carl Moyer Memorial Air Quality Standards Attainment Program also helps fund electric school buses.

The Energy Commission is using funds from the California Clean Energy Jobs Act, also known as Proposition 39, to provide schools with electric buses. Proposition 39 is a voter-approved initiative that adjusted the corporate income tax code and allocated revenues to school districts for energy improvements.

Over five years, the Energy Commission’s Proposition 39 K-12 Program awarded more than $1.7 billion to schools to plan and install energy efficiency upgrades and clean energy generation measures.

The Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program, also known as the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program, will provide the charging infrastructure to support the buses purchased through the School Bus Replacement Program. The Clean Transportation Program will also fund workforce training and development opportunities for drivers and maintenance technicians.

New Study Shows That Spending Just Ten Minutes With Cats or Dogs Can ‘Significantly’ Reduce Stress

College is stressful. Students have classes, papers, and exams. But they also often have work, bills to pay, and so many other pressures common in modern life.

Many universities have instituted “Pet Your Stress Away” programs, where students can come in and interact with cats and/or dogs to help alleviate some of the strain.

Scientists at Washington State University have recently demonstrated that, in addition to improving students’ moods, these programs can actually get “under the skin” and have stress-relieving physiological benefits.

“Just 10 minutes can have a significant impact,” said Patricia Pendry, an associate professor in WSU’s Department of Human Development. “Students in our study that interacted with cats and dogs had a significant reduction in cortisol, a major stress hormone.”

RELATED: Managing Your Gut Bacteria Shown to Alleviate Anxiety, Says New Research

Pendry published these findings with WSU graduate student Jaymie Vandagriff last month in AERA Open, an open access journal published by the American Educational Research Association.

This is the first study that has demonstrated reductions in students’ cortisol levels during a real‑life intervention rather than in a laboratory setting.

The study involved 249 college students randomly divided into four groups. The first group received hands‑on interaction in small groups with cats and dogs for 10 minutes. They could pet, play with, and generally hang out with the animals as they wanted.

CHECK OUT: Stressed-Out Americans Only Get 43 Minutes of ‘Me Time’ Per Day, But Solution May Lie in Their Backyards

To compare effects of different exposures to animals, the second group observed other people petting animals while they waited in line for their turn. The third group watched a slideshow of the same animals available during the intervention, while the fourth group was “waitlisted”. Those students waited for their turn quietly for 10 minutes without their phones, reading materials, or other stimuli, but were told they would experience animal interaction soon.

Several salivary cortisol samples were collected from each participant, starting in the morning when they woke up. Once all the data was crunched from the various samples, the students who interacted directly with the pets showed significantly less cortisol in their saliva after the interaction. These results were found even while considering that some students may have had very high or low levels to begin with.

MORE: Stressed? New Study Says You Simply Need a 20-Minute ‘Nature Pill’

“We already knew that students enjoy interacting with animals, and that it helps them experience more positive emotions,” Pendry said. “What we wanted to learn was whether this exposure would help students reduce their stress in a less subjective way. And it did, which is exciting because the reduction of stress hormones may, over time, have significant benefits for physical and mental health.”

Now Pendry and her team are continuing this work by examining the impact of a four-week-long animal-assisted stress prevention program. Preliminary results are very positive, with a follow‑up study showing that the findings of the recently published work hold up. They hope to publish the final results of that work in the near future.

Frugal Carpenter Scrimped and Saved So He Could Give Full College Scholarships to 33 Strangers

Dale Schroeder didn’t go to college, didn’t get married or have children, and he didn’t even own more than two pairs of jeans—but what the Iowa native did do, at the end of his life, was incredible.

Born 100 years ago, Schroeder’s life reads like a promo for the skilled trades. He became a carpenter, worked 67 years at the same business in DesMoines, and put some of his money away while living frugally. He was quiet and shy, not often going against the grain.

During his retirement, Schroeder decided he wanted to use the tidy sum he stashed in the bank to help his community, so he consulted attorney Steve Nielsen on how he could make it happen.

“Finally, I kind of was curious,” said the lawyer. “I asked him, ‘How much are we talking about, Dale?’ And he said, ‘Oh, just shy of three million dollars’ and I nearly fell out of my chair,” Nielsen told KCCI News.

Schroeder grew up poor and didn’t have the chance to go to college, so he wanted to give “free rides” to Iowa kids whose grades qualified them, but who couldn’t meet the steep financial requirements.

“He wanted to help kids that were like him, who wouldn’t probably have an opportunity to go to college, but for this gift.”

RELATED: Billionaire Tells College Grads He Will Pay Off All $40 Million of Their Collective Student Loan Debt

Since Schroeder’s death in 2005, his scholarships have funded 33 people and their dreams for college—and recently, those people came together to remember him and the selfless way he reframed their lives.

His old lunch box sat on the table, as if to represent him, while the scholarship recipients shared stories of where they are now and what they’ve accomplished. And although Dale never had children, those 33 strangers now fondly refer to themselves as “Dale’s kids,” and that hits the nail right on the head.

We think Dale would be extremely proud.

Light Show With 300 Drones Wows the Crowd at NASA Space Center Celebrating 50th Moon Landing Anniversary –Video

Video released by Duran Duran on Youtube shows shows drone light show over Kennedy Space Center Wednesday.

Watching a spectacular drone light show under a full moon at the Kennedy Space Center, while listening to a hauntingly beautiful orchestral performance led by Duran Duran, synced with video of the moon landing… Maybe it’s the perfect way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 achievement.

The Amsterdam design firm Studio Drift launched the special edition of their spectacle—called Franchise Freedom—at the Kennedy Space Center Wednesday night.

The dynamic aerial sculpture features 300 glowing, autonomous Intel Shooting Star Drones. The unchoreographed display was accomplished thanks to finely-tuned algorithms. Each drone acts and reacts in real-time to its network.

The result is a spellbinding replica of starlings in slow-moving flight.

In front of a big-screen showing video highlights of the Apollo rocket lift-off and moon landing filmed a half century ago, Duran Duran, the British New Wave band best known for their hit single “Hungry Like the Wolf” performed an aptly-named composition “The Universe Alone,” backed by a string ensemble and choir.

The orchestral arrangements soared as high as the drones, making for an unforgettable evening.

“I was completely enchanted by what they had created. I’d never seen technology like this be used in such an emotional way,” says band founder and keyboardist Nick Rhodes.

Giant Corn Crop Planted in the Shape of a Sea Turtle Was Created Using GPS –LOOK

This massive maze stretching across five acres is delighting visitors and aerial drones alike with its 3.7-mile path laid out in the shape of a sea turtle.

It took a team of gardeners at Cairnie Fruit Farm, in Cupar, Scotland, months to grow the crop, which was planted in May with the help of a GPS tracker to create the design.

The team at the farm, which grows an impressive maze in a different shape every year, will wait until October to harvest the corn, which is expected to reach up to 8ft tall when it is fully grown.

Outdoor Manager, Radu Moldovan, who has worked at the farm for 12 years, said it takes about two and a half hours for visitors to finish walking the entire path (6km).

Watch These Ingenious Rescuers Save a Leopard from Drowning in a 15-foot Well

An amazing rescue operation took place in India this week to save a leopard trapped and drowning in a 15-ft deep well.

The big cat was saved by a team of twenty wildlife rescuers who first had to figure out how to provide some relief to the cat while they figured out how to proceed.

The dramatic rescue caught on video took place in the village of Fakte near Maharashtra, in India, on Monday July 15.

It came after villagers heard ‘grunts’ and discovered the trapped feline. They called forest officials and the charity, Wildlife SOS.

Rescuers initially lowered a plank of wood into the water to keep the animal afloat for several hours while they sourced more equipment.

The plan consisted of lowering a wooden crate with a quick-shut door into the confines of the deep well.

A camera was rigged up inside the metal crate and it ultimately captured the soaking wet leopard clambering to safety.

A source said: “As soon as the big cat went inside, the cage door was closed and pulled up with the attached ropes.”

The leopard is under the medical supervision of the Wildlife SOS vets and will be released as soon as it is deemed fit.

Population Doubles For One of New Zealand’s Rarest Birds, As 150 Chicks Hatch This Season

The adorable orange-fronted parakeet is making an impressive comeback as New Zealand’s most endangered forest bird species—doubling its population with an epic hatch in 2019.

Known in the island nation as kākāriki karaka, it lives in beech forests and was thought to be completely extinct until 1993, when they were rediscovered in Canturbury.

There were only 100-300 individuals before this hatching season, so this year’s bounty of newborns could more than double their numbers.

Kākāriki are found only in a few places where their habitat still exists: a unique upland valley habitat of beech trees. The parakeets eat plants and insects, but when the beech trees produce seed, those become the flyers’ preferred food source. This year, those trees are fruiting like crazy, producing so much seed that wildlife conservationists haven’t seen anything like it in 40 years.

“The birds just keep on breeding, with some parakeet pairs onto their fifth clutch of eggs,” said Eugenie Sage, the Minister of the Department of Conservation.

Field staff have found at least 150 wild-born chicks so far this season—and they’re still hatching. Since the tiny orange-fronted parakeet has the ability to breed for 18 months straight, this baby boom might not end until the food runs out.

It has taken decades of committed conservation efforts to help the vibrant little Kākāriki. A captive breeding program in place since 2003 has led to 191 releases in the wild over the last four years. Ubered back out to their native habitat by the folks at Christchurch Helicopters, sixty-two were released just this year.

Sage acknowledged the crucial role of the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust in Christchurch, which has been producing captive-bred birds for release into the wild—and now they have become a breeding machine.

The Only Way for 4-Year-old to Get Surgery 3,000 Miles Away Was Fully-Equipped RV—And Strangers Sprung for It

The family of a 4-year-old has found new hope for their ailing son, thanks to a couple generous business owners who heard about their plight.

Born with multiple heart defects, Noah Alderson’s family had been told by local doctors there was nothing they could do—but surgeons at Boston Children’s Hospital believe they can save his life with a state-of-the-art procedure. However, transporting the boy cross-country, with all the medical equipment needed for his survival seemed impossible—until a company called Outdoorsy opened its heart and wallet.

Noah has already undergone two surgeries on his heart in Spokane, Washington and depends on medical equipment to keep him alive. For starters, there’s the oxygen tank, the nebulizer, the trach, the ventilator, and the feeding tube.

In layman’s terms, it’s a lot. It can be challenging enough to travel with a healthy kid, so consider what it takes to leave the house with Noah and his machines — not to mention his three other siblings.

Flying or driving a car were not options. The family said an RV was their only hope.

In an attempt to raise the money for a cross-country RV trip, the Aldersons set up a GoFundMe page with the goal of finding someone willing to let them borrow or rent an RV, and also raise $10,000 to cover the cost of the journey. They did raise $5,600, but what happened next was more than the family could have dreamed for.

A good Samaritan shared the link on the Outdoorsy RV Owners page on Facebook, with the caption “Delete is not allowed”. The group, which has 6,500 members, quickly rallied around the cause. Sebastian Bularz, of Seattle RV Adventures, went out and purchased a brand new Class C RV for its fleet, specifically earmarked for the family.

But, the real blessing came from the CEO of Outdoorsy, an Austin-based start up that operates as ‘The Airbnb of RVs’. He promised the Alderson family that the company will cover the cost of the RV rental rate, plus mileage costs, the cost of campgrounds, gas and insurance—plus, a hotel room close to Boston Children’s Hospital for the duration of the family’s stay in Boston (which could be up to a few weeks).

“We’ll also ensure that a backup generator is provided so this family never has to worry about an electricity outage along the way,” Outdoorsy CEO Jeff Cavins tells Good News Network.

Enthusiastic coworkers at Outdoorsy are even helping to create a fun 12 day itinerary so the family can enjoy their road trip.

“The minute we read the news about Noah and learned about the Alderson family’s special need for an RV to transport him to Boston, our team knew we had to help take this worry off their plate,” says Cavins. “Outdoorsy is built upon the foundational belief that family and our time spent together is of upmost importance. We are proud to be a small piece in Noah’s bigger life story and to help fuel his love for ‘big cars’.”

Noah’s family is incredibly grateful for the generosity of the community of RV owners and renters.

“This offer is so generous and the team at Outdoorsy all have amazing hearts to have given us this once in a lifetime opportunity to make memories and spend time together,” said Noah’s mother Tanasha Alderson. “Especially because time with our son Noah has always been an unknown as far as how much time we get with our little boy, as his heart and lungs are so complex.

“Boston Children’s feels so confident they can help him. The question of how do we get him there has been on my mind for many sleepless nights. God has heard our prayers – even the silent ones we never mentioned.”

Noah’s journey will start August 1, with his surgery currently scheduled for August 19, 2019. You can follow his journey at Noah the Brave on Facebook.

Watch Paul McCartney Bring Out Ringo Starr for Beatles Reunion in Dodger Stadium: ‘I love you, man…’

It was just a day in the life of Paul McCartney, thrilling Beatles fans at the final show of his North American Freshen Up tour on Saturday—but during the encore, when McCartney announced “the one and only Ringo Starr” the crowd knew they were being gifted the rare opportunity of seeing two of the Fab Four get back together.

The concertgoers went wild, and Ringo beamed as he walked up to the microphone, where in a tender moment, Paul embraced him and kissed his forehead. Ringo shouted “Happy Birthday!” (like this was a belated gift for his July 7 birthday)

Then, he flashed his favorite peace sign and said “Peace and love” before taking a seat at a second drum platform that was quickly wheeled out for the surprise reunion.

They didn’t let the fans down, moving right into the opening drum beats of Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. (See the video below…)

Although Paul has performed at Dodger Stadium in recent years, it was almost 54 years ago they shared the stage here in L.A., when the Beatles performed during their penultimate tour gig in August 1966.

RELATED: Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour Auctions Off 126 Guitars and Raises $21 Million for Climate Change Battle

The duo has played together only a handful of times since 1970, and Paul was the one accepting a surprise appearance in 2013, when he joined Ringo and his All-Starr Band at their Radio City blowout on Starr’s 70th birthday. They also came together for the 50th anniversary Beatles Salute, which was filmed at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and they rocked the audience at the Grammy Awards in January 2014.

Ringo Starr has continued to be prolific with ongoing worldwide tours and a new album, released in 2017, called Give More Love. Paul quietly contributed on two of the songs on the album: We’re on the Road Again, and Show Me the Way, a love song Ringo wrote for his wife, Barbara Bach.

But musical connections aren’t the only way McCartney and Starr team up. The two are both activists for peace and love for all creatures. Last month was the 10-year anniversary of Meat Free Mondays, an effort spearheaded by Paul and his daughters to promote meatless meals once per week—and Ringo was there to endorse it.

Ringo and his wife’s charity, The Lotus Foundation, supports charitable projects aimed at “advancing social welfare in diverse areas”, such as substance abuse, cerebral palsy, cancer, battered women, homelessness, and animals in need. In 2015, the couple decided to auction off 1,300 of Ringo’s personal memorabilia, including the first pressing of the White Album with his fingerprints on it, and raised $9.2 million for the foundation.

Saturday night at Dodger Stadium wasn’t just a reunion of two of the most iconic musicians of all time. It was another emotional milestone to witness McCartney and Starr together again performing Beatles classics and sharing their gifts of peace and love: two souls who just keep getting better all the time.

Pawn Shop Owner Gives Motorized Wheelchairs to 580 People –Some Who Haven’t Been Outside in Years

Mobility is truly one of the wonders of life that so many of us take it for granted. This is a story about how an astonishing 580 people got their freedom back, thanks to a Connecticut businessman’s passion and determination.

It all started in Philip Pavone’s pawn shop in 2009, when he stumbled upon an opportunity to make a difference. There were some motorized wheelchairs hanging around the shop that still hadn’t sold and, in an attempt to clear space for new inventory, he placed an ad in his local paper, offering them for free.

Within two weeks, he received more than sixty letters in response to the ad.

It was then that Mr. Pavone began to realize the scale of the problem. Many of those who wrote confided that their insurance would not cover the cost of a motorized wheelchair—$4,000-$40,000—and they could not afford the cost.

“At that moment, I realized how many people out there were suffering. It was unbelievable,” said Mr. Pavone. “Some of the people writing to me hadn’t left their homes for months, even years at a time. Many were elderly and had no one to help them.”

As a Vietnam veteran and cancer survivor who deeply empathized with the letters he received, Pavone decided to take action. First, he bought, repaired, and gave away four more used wheelchairs. It was during this process that he realized how many of them were sitting in basements and garages, unused or broken—and he began asking people to donate them, so he could repair them and give them away. AZ Pawn’s Gift of Mobility was born.

His process of pairing recipients with their chairs and scooters culminates each year with a major event during the holiday season, when 100 chairs and scooters are given away in a single day. Those who have benefited include an elderly Holocaust survivor, a World War II veteran, a woman in her 20s with a rare degenerative disease, and a number of patients at local nursing homes and rehabilitation centers.

“Once we give these chairs to people and see how grateful they are —the tears and the hugging and kissing—I know we’re making a difference,” says Pavone. “These chairs offer a way for people to live an independent life.”

He accepts donations from March 1 to October 31; chairs and scooters can be dropped off at his AZ Pawn shop in Norwich, Connecticut—or volunteers can also pick up unwanted chairs within a 40-mile radius of the shop.

American Workplaces are Becoming More and More Casual, and Not Just on Friday

81 percent of Americans believe workplace attire has become more casual across the board in the last decade—and only one in five US workplaces (20%) still enforce a dress code.

That’s according to a new poll that found that half of workers follow a casual or smart–casual dress code at work, allowing for jeans and other dress-down items in the office.

23 percent consider the rules at their offices to be ‘mostly smart’, but still make allowance for casual touches.

The findings were uncovered as part of a larger study into the prominence of denim across the globe, both at home and in the workplace.

The global fashion search platform Lyst, commissioned the poll as part of their comprehensive assessment of denim in 2019 – ‘The Denim Report’.

“As work hours have increased and the ‘always on’ culture has come to prominence thanks to developments in tech and connectivity, the lines between our work lives and our home lives have blurred,” said a spokesperson.

“Work is no longer siloed off from the rest of our lives, and therefore it is right that the rules around dress codes in the workplace have become more relaxed.

“Jeans are synonymous with style, practicality and comfort, and have successfully bridged this gap between casual wear and workwear.”

Eighty four percent of the 2,000 adults surveyed believe their jeans are a key component of their style, owning nine pairs on average – four of which they regularly wear.

And seven in 10 Americans have owned a pair of jeans which was ‘perfect’ for them with regards to fit, style and wash.

Airline to Stop Using 55 Million Plastic Items On Flights

For every mile a jet flies, it generates 53 pounds of carbon dioxide—but until we have a better supply of aviation biofuel made from waste, there are other ways that airlines are reducing their unsustainable footprint.

Air New Zealand, for instance, is slashing their use of plastic on flights—cutting out 55 million items, which will actually make the planes lighter and save a wee bit of fuel.

The list of plastic on the chopping block, announced in a press release July 8, is pretty long. It includes everything from plastic cups to water bottles, sauce packets to cheese trays. Every one of those pieces has a carbon footprint equal to around 3 ounces of carbon dioxide, so by eliminating them from the flights, Air New Zealand cuts out 10.3 million pounds of CO2 this year alone.

And passengers need not fret. You won’t have to go without water once you board. In fact, you’ll still be able to get all the items. They’ll just look a bit different. For example, plastic sauce packets aren’t just being removed. They’re being replaced. By this fall, passengers will get mustard and mayo in reusable dishes instead of the regular throwaway packets. That alone, the airline estimates, will eliminate around 200,000 pieces of plastic each year.

RELATED: As Only US Airline to Use Biofuel on Regular Basis, All United Flights From LA Are Now Powered By Biofuel

The majority of the 55 million items, however, come in the form of 29 million cups. Passengers on international flights will still be able to get a cup of coffee when they want, but as of this fall, those cups will be made from plants. It’s a change the airline started earlier this year on domestic flights, swapping out 14.7 million for the plant-based version. The same goes for plastic water cups, which will be exchanged for a recyclable alternative.

So why is this important? The idea, according to Air New Zealand’s Acting Head of Sustainability Anna Palairet, is to help the environment by cutting down on the airline’s carbon footprint. As of 2018, the company generated 3.5 million tons of carbon dioxide each year, making it one of New Zealand’s largest polluters.

“Single-use plastic is a highly topical and visible issue for us and our customers, so we’re really pleased to be able to share this progress,” Palairet said in the release.

Most of the trash we put in landfills is biodegradable, meaning it breaks down over time and gets recycled naturally in the soil. While most items take days or months to decompose, plastics can take hundreds of years, if not thousands. And in New Zealand, there’s not much of an infrastructure to support alternative methods of disposing plastics, so the waste piles up in landfills.

Now, with this idea, the plastic stays out of landfills and the carbon stays out of the skies, helping us take a step toward a cleaner future.

Local Church Pays Off $7.2 Million of Crippling Medical Debt for 6,500 Families

It’s uncertain whether the struggling residents of Central Florida have ever prayed for their medical bills to be wiped out, but that’s exactly what just happened: 6,500 families are going to get letters in the mail saying their debt has been paid off by people they’ve never met.

“It’s one thing for us to say, ‘God loves you,” Senior Pastor Dan Glenn told his congregation. “It’s another for us to show it.”

When Stetson Baptist Church found itself with an ‘extra Sunday’ at the end of its fiscal year calendar, its leaders decided that on June 30th, the money collected during the service would be donated to charity. Their plan was to split the proceeds to support a group foster home that provides services for underserved youngsters and also help the residents of their home county of Volusia to pay their medical bills.

Although the initial goal of the church in DeLand was $48,000, the congregation of about 350 responded to the call and raised a staggering $153,867, more than three times the original goal.

The generous donations were able to fund not one, not two, but three foster homes for an entire year—plus wipe out the medical debt of struggling families in four additional Central Florida counties.

They used a New York charity, RIP Medical Debt, which buys the debt for just pennies on the dollar, to leverage the money’s impact—and ended up wiping out $7.2 million of unpaid medical bills.

Church leaders got the idea after hearing about a Kansas church that had done the same thing. Earlier this month, a church in Michigan said it had also purchased medical debts, helping almost 2,000 families and providing over $1.8 million in medical debt relief.

It’s interesting to note that buying the debt of strangers and subsequently paying it off was an idea that sprung out of the political movement of ‘Occupy Wall Street.’ After protests ended and the encampments taken down in New York and cities around the world, some of the participants set up an amazing effort in 2012 to help “the 99%” and called the Rolling Jubilee.

They raised over $700,000 to abolish more than $35 million in crushing college and medical debt, liberating tens of thousands of people from the burden.

Even more amazing, the two founders of RIP were actual debt collectors, wearing suits and ties, with offices near the protest encampments. They were inspired by the movement and now are freeing strangers from debt in a full-time capacity.

When Woman’s Car Fails and She Can’t Afford a Tow, Canadian Teens Push it 4 Miles to Get Her Home

Billy Tabett, Bailey Campbell, and Aeron McQuillin –by Dan Morrison

Three teenage boys pushed the term ‘Good Samaritan’ into a whole new stratosphere with an amazing act of kindness last week.

A little after midnight, Aeron McQuillin, Bailey Campbell, and Billy Tarbett were on their way to Tim Horton’s coffee shop after a swim when they noticed steam billowing from under the hood of a car stopped along Highway 20 in Fonthill, Ontario.

The boys, all car enthusiasts, pulled over to lend a hand. After looking under the hood, they told the driver that it probably needed a new engine and advised against starting the motor. The woman was visibly upset and said she couldn’t afford a tow.

That’s when Billy suggested they push the car to the woman’s home in Welland.

“We had nothing better to do—but even if we did I would like to think we would have helped her anyway,” the 15-year-old said.

The teens grabbed their water bottles and pushed the Chevy Cobalt up a hill, and continued for more than two hours along the dark Merritville Highway, laughing, joking, and appreciating the great ‘workout’.

“We were helping her, but also she was helping us,” the optimistic Tarbett was quoted as saying by news reports.

Another stranger, Niagara Falls resident Dan Morrison, decided to drive along behind the trio to keep them safe—he turned on his flashers and totally went into “Dad mode”.

The cooperative rescue mission, which covered over 4 miles (7 km) finally ended at four in the morning.

“We were at the right place at the right time, and this is one of those stories that we can look back on in 10 years and say it was one of those crazy things we did, but it was all worth it,” said 18-year-old Aeron McQuillin told The Niagra Falls Review.

Dan posted about it on social media with a photo of the superheros, and their phones began “blowing up” with messages from people they’d never met. Some offered a free meal or Tim Horton’s gift card.

But the boys were taking none of it.

“We really appreciate it, but we didn’t do this to get free handouts,” said McQuillin, 18, who grew up in the same neighborhood with his two buddies. “If I was broken down on the side of the road, I would love for someone to stop and help out.”

Morrison, a father of two, said this was a great reminder that in a seemingly-negative world, “There’s good kids out there.”

Man Walks the Famed Camino de Santiago Trail With Driver Who Almost Killed Him in a Wreck (Video)

Front to back: Luke Hutchins and Mark Joseph Peredo

In 2015, Mark Joseph Peredo was riding high on his way home from landing an important client for his fledgling marketing business, but he never made it back to celebrate with his family. Instead, a car traveling on the opposite side of the interstate highway crossed the median, and smashed into Mark’s car.

Doctors would later tell Mark that his foot had been shattered and he had broken several bones in his face. The injuries and subsequent surgeries rendered him unable to walk normally for a year, and Mark was forced to abandon his plans to be a successful business owner.

Little did Mark know, but the driver was suffering, too — perhaps even more than Mark was.

The reason Luke Hutchins had lost control of his vehicle was because he had suffered a seizure—his first, but not his last. After being airlifted to the hospital and undergoing diagnostic tests, Luke was told that veins in his brain had formed two deadly knots, which saddled him with chronic epilepsy. Eventually, they said, the malformation, called a cavernous angioma, could kill him.

This news meant that Luke could no longer drive, work, or take care of his daughters.

Mark knew none of this. Instead, he was still angry with the anonymous driver who had cost him his career. This anger was compounded by grief following the death of Mark’s father.

After Mark’s foot had mostly healed, he decided to walk the famed 500-mile Camino de Santiago, a trail that begins in France, continues through the Pyrenees Mountains, and ends in Spain. Like thousands of pilgrimages launched on this sacred trail, he hoped to find healing for his soul.

After returning from Spain in November of 2016, he was no longer angry at the driver who caused his accident, but he realized that he needed to do one more thing to complete his journey of healing: Meet Luke.

The two were nervous to speak to each other, but once Mark learned that Luke was not at fault for the incident and that he had been similarly struggling to heal, Mark knew that Luke needed to walk the Camino too—and they needed to do it together.

In 2017, Mark and Luke embarked on their trip. The journey was hard on Luke at first, according to an article in The Criterion. He was on medications that would keep him from eating. On the first day, a steep climb up the mountains, Mark had to shoulder Luke’s backpack to help him endure.

Luke, refusing to quit where thousands had done so in the past, committed to continue the ‘brutal’ trek. As time progressed, Luke became stronger, and he took himself off of a few of the medications.

During the 40 day quest, Luke and Mark had many heart-to-heart talks about their lives and what happened the day of the accident.
