Following the charity efforts of stars like Pearl Jam, Cher, and The Game, one man in a city far away is joining the ranks of private citizens making a difference in Flint.

After the end of a three-day donation drive hosted this week by John, residents in Mount Pleasant had contributed so many cases of water for his journey north that he had to abandon his plan to use the rented  U-Haul truck – and upgrade to an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer.

“It’s a good problem to have,” he told WCIV.

The water will be arriving on Monday at the community center in Flint for distribution.

Appalachian Miners Trade Coal for Code, Digging Computer Skills

Coal to Code CC Nottsexminer CC HackNY

Eastern Kentucky miners who once dug for coal are now digging for a Ruby — Ruby script, that is, learning coding languages for computer software.

Tech start-up Bit Source started turning miners into coders in 2014, seeking laid-off coal miners to become computer programmers. Its founders believe that miners with practical engineering experience working with heavy equipment will have a natural aptitude for writing code.GNN-app-banner-ad-opt

The former laborers each spend five months learning new skills while a Labor Department grant, and other similar funding, pays their wages during the training period.

Coal production in the region dropped from 110 million tons produced in 2001 to less than 30 million last year. With coal fields disappearing, miners are looking for a new line of work, and the $70,000 starting salary for coders is close to what they were making in the mines.

Former Child Brides Win Case in Court: Zimbabwe Bans Child Marriage

Young Mothers Africa CC UK Dept for Intl Development

Former child brides have struck a blow for future generations of women and children — taking their case to Zimbabwe’s highest court and winning a ban on marriage for anyone under the age of 18.

The women, Loveness Mudzuru and Ruvimbo Tsopodzi, claimed they faced a life of poverty without access to education after being forced into child marriages.

A lawyer for the two said the court decision “deals a decisive blow to the exploitation of children” and called on Zimbabwe’s legislature to set penalties for for the practice.

Nearly one-third of girls in Zimbabwe marry before their 18th birthday — some even before they turn 15  — when parents arrange their marriages.

The Constitutional Court’s ruling on January 20 banned marriage and other customary forms of unions for anyone under the age of 18. It also struck down a law that let girls marry at 16, but required boys to be at least 18.

Women Can Become Heads of Households in India Says Court Ruling

indian women 2 cc etrenard

Indian women have won the right to be considered the head of a household.

Previously, the role of “Karta” in any family residing in one home was only available to men. The Delhi High Court changed that, announcing that they have overturned the long standing law in favor of equality for women.

FIND ALL THE LATEST GOOD NEWS WITH OUR APP—>  Download FREE for Android and iOS

As the designated leader of a family, the Karta is in charge of property, inheritance, and other family decisions.

The case before the court was brought by an eldest daughter who wanted to take over the family business after her father, brothers, and uncle had all passed away. Under a 1956 law, the role of Karta passed to one of her nephews.

Her lawyers argued that a 2005 amendment granting women the right to inheritance should also extend the “fundamental right of equality guaranteed by the Constitution” to women who want to serve as head of a household.

“If a male member…by virtue of his being the first born eldest, can be a Karta, so can a female member,” Justice Najmi Waziri of the Delhi High Court said in the December judgment which was only made public in February.

The rule allows the eldest woman member of a family to become Karta, and applies to India’s Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) — which is the country’s legally recognized family group created by Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Sikh Indians through marriage.

Israeli Women Tear Down Centuries Old Gender Barrier at the Western Wall

Women in Israel have had their prayers answered.

After a three decade-long battle, the Israeli government has agreed to let women pray alongside men at Jerusalem’s Western Wall, one of Judaism’s holiest sites.

The Wall is one of the few remaining remnants of the Second Jewish Temple, and rules allowed both men and women to pray at the wall — but never together.

A group called Women of the Wall has held monthly protests for the past 27 years demanding the Israeli government bring down the virtual wall between genders and allow women and men to pray alongside one another.

Under a compromise approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet, a former archeological site will be turned into a plaza allowing mixed-gender prayers.

Costing nine million dollars, the plaza will be able to accommodate 1,200 people at a time, reports the CS Monitor.

Crime Rate Continues its Decline in New York City During 2015

While news reports throughout the past year raised anxiety that New York City was slipping back into the crime rates of its bad old days, 2015 turned out to be one of the best years ever — and crime rates continued historic declines.

Over the past two years, the NYPD has been changing their approach to law enforcement and community relations, relying more on problem solving instead of making arrests.
