Sweet Enzyme Discovered Can Actually Break Down Harmful Effects of Sugar

cake cc la-fontaine

A delicious discovery could let you indulge your sweet tooth more often in the future without worrying so much about the negative effects on the body.

More seriously, it could mean an effective treatment for obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Scientists identified an enzyme — a hormone called G3PP — that allows the body to destroy excess sugar, meaning your body doesn’t store it as fat. It may also be able to control the toxic effects of that excess sugar on vital organs.GNN-app-banner-ad-opt

Normally, too much sugar in the body creates an organ-damaging chemical called glycerol-3-phosphate, which affects the inner workings of cells and alters the body’s metabolism. Those changes send glucose levels rising, threatening the insulin-producing pancreas, liver, and other organs.

G3PP can break down that chemical and flush it out of cells, reining in glucose levels, which would protect organs from harm.

“It is extremely rare since the 1960s that a novel enzyme is discovered at the heart of metabolism of nutrients in all mammalian tissues, and likely this enzyme will be incorporated in biochemistry textbook,” said Dr. Marc Prentki, one of the researchers leading the study at the University of Montreal Hospital Research Center.

This is largely still theoretical science, additional animal and human trials are still needed to see how the process works outside the lab, but the researchers believe their discovery could lead to drug therapy for obesity and diabetes. They are already expanding their research to find out if G3PP could be used to control metabolism disorders like metabolic syndrome.

RELATED:  Better Eating Habits and Food Have Saved a Million Lives (Study)

Any practical use of the discovery is still several years away at best.

The researchers published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Daughter Surprises Dad With His First Vacation to Reward Life of Hard Work

Man on Beach CC Hernán Piñera

Growing up in a small, rural village in Poland, Iwona Pinkowicz always dreamed of travel–but her father never dared. He was a hard working man who had no time or money for such luxuries as the beach.

Marian, sometimes working two jobs to provide for his family, had never taken a vacation trip–and certainly never dreamed of globe trotting to the tropics.

His daughter Iwona became a photographer and digital marketer in London, and became an avid world traveler.

As a way to thank her father for all he’d done over the years, Iwona and her fiancee surprised Marian with an extra ticket on their 16-day trip to Singapore before hopping to Bali, a tropical paradise in Indonesia late last year.

Iwona documented Marian’s adventure in photos. From soaking in pools, to biking through a rain forest, and smiling contentedly with sand on his bare feet lying in a hammock, each image, Iwona says, is a reminder that “you should take the time to treat your friends and family.”

Police Dog Death Rallies Community to Raise $30K for Bulletproof K9 Vests

Jethro and Officer Davis FB Canton Ohio PD

After losing one of their beloved police dogs, an Ohio city raised $24,000 in a single day for bullet proof vests for the K-9 cops left on the force.

Jethro and his partner Officer Davis with the Canton Police Department surprised a burglar Saturday night and the three-year-old German shepherd was wounded in a shootout.

“There’s not a doubt in my mind that that dog saved officers’ lives today,” Police Chief Bruce Lawver told the Canton Repository.

At first, it looked like the dog had only minor injuries, but Jethro took a turn for the worse and passed away Sunday.

Even in his death, Jethro is protecting his fellow officers. A memorial fund to buy new protective vests for other K-9 officers, which was set up in his memory, has guaranteed new protections for other dogs.

RELATED:  9-Year-old Boy Skips Birthday Gifts to Help Protect Police Dogs

Pet blogger Beth Philley had met Jethro and Officer Davis just days earlier. After hearing about Jethro’s heroism, and how the body armor for Canton police dogs was heavy and obsolete, she decided to try to raise $10,000, in Jethro’s memory, to buy new modern K-9 bulletproof vests.

Philley’s GoFundMe campaign more than doubled its $10,000 goal in its first day and is at nearly $30,000 just three days into the campaign.

The Canton police have also been receiving donations at the station.

Jethro’s body, draped in an American flag, was given a police escort from the vet’s office Sunday and a funeral with full police honors for the hero dog is planned for Thursday.

UPDATE: Praise For Shirt-Giving Samaritan When Girlfriend’s Mom Sees

Want to get on the good side of your girlfriend’s mom? Try giving a stranger the shirt off your back.

That isn’t what Joey Resto meant to do when he helped a cold and hungry homeless man on a New York City subway. The 23-year-old didn’t know someone was recording his act of kindness as he gave up his shirt and hat to keep the man warm.

But Annie Martinez knew right away the good Samaritan in the viral video was the young man dating her daughter.

“I thought, wonderful thing he did, because we have to help others in need,” Martinez told WABC News.

Resto said his decision to help the man “just came naturally.”

Additionally, what no one could hear in the video was Resto offering the man an invitation to come back to his apartment for food and more warm clothes. The man declined, but Resto hopes his act inspires other subway riders to help the once shirtless man and other homeless people seen riding on trains.

America’s Oldest–And Most Adorable–Teacher Turns 102 Today, in Classroom Where She’s Happiest

Americas Oldest Teacher screenshot The 74

Doctors told her she has the heart a 40-year-old woman, but America’s oldest teacher is as happy as a frisky teenager.

Agnes Zhelesnik, or ‘Granny’ as she is called by students and teachers alike, turns 102 years old today. She didn’t even start working at the Sundance School in New Jersey until she was 80.

After her life as a homemaker, Agnes jumped at the chance to take a job as a sewing and cooking instructor to five and six-year-olds.

Her daughter, who works as an art teacher at the school, first asked in the 1990s if she wanted to help out in the cafeteria. Later, when the cooking class actually needed a teacher, Agnes recalls being very excited.

“That was the perfect place for me.”

Although she is called Granny, Principal W.J. O’Reilly calls her “a beam of light.”

“One Tough Bison” Survives Lightning Strike to Thrive on the Range

Sparky the Bison Public Domain FWS

Sparky the bison wasn’t expected to live long after rangers found him struck by lightning. They left him standing alone, and let nature take its course, but nearly three years later, the lucky buffalo still roams his prairie home on the range in Iowa.

Sparky, who was given the name after his brush with a thunderbolt, is a bit more lean than other bison his age at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, according to rangers who decided to check back in with him to see how he’s doing.

The bison still shows the scars of where the lightning struck his back, and exited through his hind leg in July, 2013, but despite the wound, he’s still “going strong” says the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). He is behaving just like any other bull bison at the refuge.

A FWS biologist kept a watch on him after the lightning strike, prepared to put Sparky down if he began to suffer, but as the weeks turned into months, the bison not only survived, he has thrived since his recovery.

“Sparky has proved us wrong!” the Interior Department declared in a Facebook post.

Genetic testing shows Sparky fathered three calves in the refuge’s herd before the strike. The refuge managers are hoping another round of tests will show he’s fathered more calves since being struck.

“We’re hoping that he does, because he’s one tough bison!” the FWS announced in a statement.

Teen Girl Lifts Truck Off Her Father, Saves Family From Fire

Teen Dad and Truck screenshot Fox News

When her father was injured and trapped, a teenage girl found a reservoir of superhero strength —and lifted a burning truck, then drove it away from the house to save her house and family.

Charlotte Heffelmire’s dad, Eric, had been under the truck working on its brake lines in Vienna, Virginia when the vehicle slipped off the jack and pinned him beneath the front-end. At the same moment, sparks began shooting up flames.

Eric struggled for 10 minutes but couldn’t free himself until Charlotte happened to walk into the garage. She immediately ran to the front bumper of the burning vehicle and, barefoot and barehanded, tried lifting it off her father.

“I lifted it the first time, he said ‘OK, you almost got it,'” Charlotte Heffelmire says in the video below. On the second try she tapped “some crazy strength,” and was able to lift it high enough to free him and then she dragged him away from the flames. She said it felt like she was lifting a piece of paper.

She realized the burning truck was still a threat to the house and the rest of the family inside. So she climbed behind the wheel and floored the gas pedal, with just three wheels of support, and steered it into the yard.

Charlotte is recovering from burns to her hands and feet and a back injury and hopes to return soon to school at the U.S. Air Force Academy. The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department has awarded her a Citizen Lifesaving Award for her heroic actions.

For the 16th year in a row, employees of an insurance firm pooled their funds to help those less fortunate, donating a combined $16,000 to 13 San Diego nonprofit organizations as part of the company’s annual “Charity Fund” employee gift-giving program.

A San Diego-based risk management and insurance brokerage firm, Cavignac & Associates established the Charity Fund program in 2000 when its 45 employees expressed an interest in giving back to the local community in a meaningful way. The Charity Fund allows employees to deduct specific amounts from their paychecks each pay period throughout the year and direct monies to nonprofit and civic organizations they believe are doing the most good. This past year, as in previous years, all the firm’s employees opted to participate.

Moreover, Cavignac employees participated in the SAY San Diego “Backpack Back to School Drive,” which entailed shopping for school supplies and filling 19 backpacks for elementary school and middle/high school students. Each backpack was filled with a specified list of several dozen items – everything from markers, rulers, paper and scissors to calculators, USB memory sticks and protractors. The firm’s employees also purchased needed classroom materials for 19 teachers, including copy paper, disinfectant wipes, Kleenex, paper towels and hand sanitizers.

Once again this year, the company also participated in the SAY San Diego “Adopt A Family” program by sponsoring a family and fulfilling their Christmas gift wish list. Employees volunteered their time to shop for the family, and gave time on their lunch hour to wrap the gifts. The employees then delivered the gifts to SAY San Diego for presentation to the family in need.

Manatee Population Has Rebounded 500 Percent, No Longer Endangered

west indian manatee-CC-S_Whitcraft-USFWS-850px

Manatees have made a huge comeback as a result of significant improvements in habitat conditions and threat reduction.

Only about 1,267 West Indian manatees could be found in Florida when surveys began in 1991. Since then, the population has increased 500 percent – to 6,300 in that state and 13,000 overall.

Amidst this positive trend, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in January its proposal to down-list the status of the manatee from endangered to threatened under the Endangered Species Act– yet keep intact federal commitments to protection that will allow the population fully recover.

RELATED:  Humpbacks Whales Leap Off Endangered Species List

“The manatee is one of the most charismatic and instantly recognizable species,” said Michael Bean, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks at the Department of the Interior. “It’s hard to imagine the waters of Florida without them, but that was the reality we were facing before manatees were listed under the Endangered Species Act. While there is still more work to be done to fully recover manatee populations, their numbers are climbing and the threats to the species’ survival are being reduced. Today’s proposal is a positive step that recognizes the progress citizens, conservation groups, the State of Florida, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and our own Service employees have made working together.”

The ESA defines an endangered species as one currently in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range, and a threatened species as one that is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future. After a review of the best scientific and commercial information available, including analyses of threats and populations, the FWS  proposed the reclassification and has opened a 90-day comment period in which the public is invited to submit scientific or technical information that will aid the agency in reaching its final decision.GNN-app-banner-ad-opt

The manatee protection measures put in place by federal and Florida officials, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and industries resulted in the establishment of over 50 manatee protection areas and have played a key role in reversing the species’ decline. Retrofitted water control structures have resulted in significant decreases in manatee fatalities, and power companies are working cooperatively with federal and state conservation managers to address warm water outflows at wintering manatee congregation sites. Florida counties have made significant progress in developing and implementing manatee protection plans near boat facilities to reduce boater impacts on manatees.

Significant advances have also been made in reducing the threat from entanglement in fishing gear. Additionally, manatee rescue, rehabilitation and release organizations help save dozens of manatees yearly, with a majority successfully released back into the wild.

“The manatee’s recovery is incredibly encouraging and a great testament to the conservation actions of many,” said Cindy Dohner, the Service’s Southeast Regional Director in conjunction with an event at the Miami Seaquarium to announce the Service’s proposal. “Today’s proposal is not only about recognizing this progress, but it’s also about recommitting ourselves to ensuring the manatee’s long-term success and recovery.

Public comments on this proposal can be made until April 7, 2016. Learn more at the FWS website. (Photo credit FWS)

Refreshing Sweet Treat Replacements For Unhealthy Desserts

refreshing-dessert-CC-Miss-CJ

The science is very, very clear. Sugar in excess in any form creates havoc for human health. While liquid sugar—in the form of sodas—seems to be the most offensive culprit, any refined sugar at high amounts can cause problems.

The USDA recommends limiting daily added sugar intake to 6 teaspoons (25g) for women and 9 (37.5g) for men, or 10% from total calories. But, while this is a smart guideline to follow, at the end of the day who would want to live their whole life without consuming tasty sweet treats? Desserts are used to celebrate, to uplift mood, and to combine ingredients to create diverse textures and a tantalizing experience for our taste buds.

Most of these treats utilize higher quality sugars like maple syrup, raw honey, or coconut palm sugar, which all retain micronutrients and can cause less blood sugar disruption—especially when combined with higher quality fiber and fats that slow down the absorption of the sugar. In addition, these sweets swap out low quality refined vegetable oils—safflower, sunflower, soy, canola—for more healthy fats like coconut oil.

Finally, their ingredients are clean, simple, and often contain an added dose of antioxidant rich foods like spirulina, turmeric, almonds, or goji berries.

material and dress for Africa-submitted-Becky Ejupi

A clip here, a line of stitching there, and two plain old pieces of fabric are formed into a delightful dress for a little girl.

Not just any little girl, mind you. An African girl who has nothing: no other material possessions to her name.

This girl is one of millions of children who live in such abject poverty when her parents are forced to make choices between essentials such as food or clothing, and food inevitably wins out.

No matter what the pattern of the material, no matter if it has pockets, or ruffles, or not, each dress these girls receive will be treasured as most likely their first personal possession and quite often even their first item of clothing.

It will become her cloak of dignity, her cotton suit of armor. It will become a message that says she is cared for by her family as well as by people across the globe.

My husband and I give financially to many causes, which is critical, yes, but sometimes it feels so remote.

Whenever the angry world seems as if it’s spinning out of control, making these pillowcase dresses is my hands-on means of productively, positively helping.

It’s my refuge.

I know that a little girl somewhere is going to receive the dress I’m sewing and that her heart will be happy. I believe that she’ll sense that someone somewhere cares for her even if they’ve never met her, and hopefully she’ll gain a bit of self-confidence and self-worth from her new garment.

Yes, it’s a small contribution, but it just might be huge to a little child.

That’s my dream.
