Build Your Own Orchestra: Make Beautiful Music Via Artists Around the Globe

Everyone loves music, regardless of faith, culture, gender, or race.

That’s why this diverse orchestra of musicians from all over the world offered up their instruments for an interactive global song – and made you the conductor.

The orchestra includes an accordion from Turkey, a viola from Austria, a saxophone from Venezuela, a sitar from Sri Lanka, a synth from Argentina, and a dozen other instruments representing different countries. Additionally, all of the musicians are playing from the comfort of their own homes.

The music played by each artist is recorded in a series of YouTube videos – all of which are rhythmless. This means that no matter when you start playing each video, all of the tunes blend seamlessly together to make a beautiful melody.

The composer, Daniel Land, worked with travel company Expedia to create the orchestra’s music so that anyone – regardless of artistic experience – could make their own inspiring tunes.

“Each clip is one performance with no looping, although the YouTube videos themselves have been formatted to loop once,” says Land. “‎I didn’t want to specify an exact time, as the whole point (for me) was that the clips should be incommensurable, and naturally fall into different combinations.”

9-Year-old With Prosthetic Leg Becomes Inspiring Black Belt

Taekwondo is a difficult enough sport for kids without disabilities.

But that didn’t stop Toby King from working hard anyway.

The 4th grader had his right leg amputated below the knee when he was just 1 year old because of a condition called fibular hemimelia. Earlier this week, however, Toby earned his black belt in taekwondo.

Since the Tallahassee, Florida youngster needs to replace his leg every year or so, Toby has gone through 12 prosthetic legs all together.

Ryan Reynolds Schemes With Dumped Teen After She Posts Hilarious Prom Photos

Deadpool would be impressed with this teen’s handling of a breakup.

High schooler Gabi Dunn took to Twitter last week when her boyfriend dumped her a few days after prom.

Instead of wasting the prom pics, however, she decided to put them to even better use.

Dunn used her Photoshop skills to paste Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds over her ex-boyfriend’s face.

Though her editing skills weren’t of the highest caliber, they got the movie star’s attention.

Reynolds tweeted back to the teen with some rock solid advice on her next move.

As Dunn’s post started spreading under the hashtag #Don’tMessWithGabi, other teens contributed their own edited prom “dates”.

And then Twitter users started contributing their own Photoshop expertise.

But the best contribution by far was from a Twitter user who gave Reynolds a verbal nudge, saying that a real prom photo with Dunn would take the cake.

Fallen Officer’s Family Given $100,000 From 9/11 Hero Foundation

While New York City may be grieving the recent loss of a police officer, a hero from the city’s past is forging an inspiring legacy of honoring the community’s civil servants.

48-year-old Officer Miosotis Familia of the NYPD was slain while on patrol in the Bronx last week, leaving her three children behind without a guardian.

The children will have a safe future, however, thanks to Stephen Siller – a firefighter who lost his life while saving others during the 9/11 attacks.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation that was set up in Stephen’s honor announced earlier this week that they would be donating $100,000 to the children. A donation page was also set up by the foundation for additional financial contributions.

Familia reportedly worked for the Red Cross and was a 12-year veteran of the police force. Her funeral, which took place earlier today, was crowded with coworkers, neighbors, city officials, and acquaintances who admired the officer’s sunny attitude.

Officer Goes Above and Beyond For Stranded Family

This police officer went above and beyond the call of duty when he found out that a family of four had been left stranded miles away from their home.

Police Sergeant Morgan of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department found the family at a local hotel without a means of getting home.

Though the details of their abandonment were not released by the police department, the family members said that they did not have the money to get back to their city in Ohio.

Moved by their situation, Morgan and Officer Maurice Norris looked up the price of four Greyhound bus tickets back to the city. Morgan then set up a GoFundMe campaign to pay for the tickets and posted a plea on social media for his friends to help the struggling family.

Within 2 hours, the page had raised double its original goal. The officers even used the excess money to buy the family some food for their bus ride home.

The police later posted about the officer’s “nice work” on Facebook – and judging by the happy smiles on the family’s faces, the officer did indeed do his job well.

Driver Makes Every Kid on Her Route Feel Special, Hand-making Each a Toy

This dedicated bus driver has quite a knack for making her passengers feel special.

43-year-old Trudy Serres is a bus driver for Summit Elementary School in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Her second job – which she does for free – is crocheting special toys for every single one of the children on her bus route.

“She is the best,” one of the student’s parents told ABC News. “She can control them. She is their second mom when they’re on her bus. She’s just amazing. She does everything for these kids. She’s very loving and caring, and I love her. I am so grateful she is going to be our bus driver next year.”

Her labor of love first began when her 10-year-old son requested a knitted replica of a taco – his favorite food. When she stitched up the little masterpiece, her son started showing it off to all of his fellow students. Soon, all of the youngsters wanted stuffed toys of their own.

Serres went down the aisle of her bus and took requests from all 34 of her little passengers – and she flourished all of the orders with love in every stitch.

The driver knitted everything from stuffed animals, to Star Wars characters, to food and knick knacks. Her payment for the custom toys? Serres says that she does it solely for the smiles on the children’s faces.

“Found out from parents that some take them to bed, some go to church with them,” says Serres. “Some had to go on vacation with them. Makes my heart melt that these little items mean so much to these beautiful children.”

Watch Tiger Family Pose For Amazing Selfies Before Knocking Out Camera’s Memory Card

It’s not every day that you see a wild cat family enjoying a leisurely afternoon in the wild – but that’s exactly what this trail camera captured in 2016.

A series of breathtaking photos from the Land of the Leopard national park in Primorsky Krai, Russia display a mother tiger and her two cubs relaxing on a sunny November day.

Conservationists only recently discovered the photos upon an annual park camera inspection.

The cubs can be seen playing with each other while their mother takes a well-deserved nap. Experts suspect that the tigress was exhausted from hunting all night. After some light wrestling, one of the tiger cubs can be seen batting at the camera until the memory card reportedly fell out of the device.

“These pictures are unique because they show not just a tiger walking by, but an entire episode from the life of a healthy tiger family,” said Yekaterina Blidchenko, Land of the Leopard research fellow and a zoologist at the Tiger Centre.

“The cubs are 4-5 months old; they cannot fully control their bodies yet too well, so it is very important for them to play such group games. It develops muscles and helps train them in hunting skills.”“However, first and foremost, it’s the social experience and the mother tigress is the first and main teacher. What we see here is the behavior of happy animals that have enough food and a tigress who has time to play with her cubs.”

10 Years After Ban, the Number of UK Smokers Falls to Record Low

It’s been ten years since the United Kingdom introduced a ban on smoking inside enclosed public spaces – and the legislation has clearly paid off.

According to research recently released by Cancer Research UK, the amount of British smokers has fallen to a new record low of 8 million – a decline of roughly 2 million smokers.

More importantly, the legislation is suspected to have caused a dramatic drop in smoking amongst 16 to 24 year olds. Adolescent smoking dropped from 26% to 17%, which is the lowest it has ever been.

CHECK OUT: Heartfelt Memories May Be More Effective Than Shaming to Help Smokers Quit

66% of English citizens have reportedly also enjoyed being able to have a night on the town without their clothes smelling like smoke, thus making public outings more family friendly.

England was the last UK country to enforce the ban in July 2007, while Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland all launched the legislation in 2006. Other anti-smoking practices that were put into effect included requiring stores to hide cigarettes behind the counter, rather than in plain sight; increasing cigarette taxes; and removing cigarette dispensaries.

Sir Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive, said: “We’re thrilled that 10 years on, the smoking ban has been such an enormous success.

“Cancer Research UK worked incredibly hard for many years to ensure that the law would be effective and that no one would be exposed to toxic second-hand smoke. The impact on public health is huge. It’s rewarding to know that this effort will go on to have a great impact on the health of future generations.

“As well as protecting people from the deadly effects of passive smoking, we’ve also seen big changes in public attitudes towards smoking. It’s now far less socially acceptable and we hope this means fewer young people will fall into such a potentially lethal addiction.”

Male Model Jumps into Choppy Water to Rescue Drowning Dog

This fashion model wasn’t afraid of jumping into choppy ocean waters if it meant saving the pup who had been blown off of a pier.

In 2009, Raden Soemawinata was on the Brighton Pier in Victoria, Australia when 60 mile per hour winds blew Bibi, a small Maltese-Shih Tzu mixed dog, into the sea.

The dog’s owner, Sue Drummond, hesitated to jump into the water because she feared she wouldn’t be able to carry a struggling dog to shore.

Before she could react, however, Soemawinata tore off his pants and jumped into the sea.

“It was pretty cold and windy, but it wasn’t such a hard decision to jump in, it wasn’t such a great feat,” Soemawinata reportedly said of his rescue. “I’m a part-time model, so getting into my jocks isn’t so different to what I do for work.”

Soemawinata, who 20 years old at the time, was scattering his grandmother’s ashes from the pier when he saw Bibi tumble into the ocean.

Though the death of his grandmother is a tragic reason for him to be present for the heroic rescue, events could have taken a turn for the worst.

Puppy Abandoned in Airport Bathroom With ‘No Other Option’ is Inundated With Love

The owner of Chewy the dog was not happy about abandoning him in the airport bathroom – but she didn’t think she had any other choice.

The Chihuahua puppy was left in one of the restrooms of McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada with a note that read:

“Hi! I’m Chewy! My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t afford me to get on the flight. She didn’t want to leave me with all her heart, but she has no other option. My ex-boyfriend kicked my dog when we were fighting and he has a big knot on his head. He probably needs a vet. I love Chewy sooo much – please love and take care of him.”

When a passenger found the young pup, they called a local animal shelter, Connor and Millie’s Dog Rescue (CDMR). After rescue officials arrived, they took Chewy to a veterinarian where he was deemed healthy and unharmed, despite the note’s warning of a head injury.

CDMR has been posting daily updates about the Chihuahua since his story went viral – and he’s been getting a lot of love, with so many adoption offers that they had to stop accepting applications.

“There has been tremendous interest in little Chewy!!! We are compiling all the interest forms and will be going through them all. CMDR would like to say thank you for all the offers of a loving home,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post. “However, there is but 1 Chewy and he can go but to 1 home. Please consider the hundreds if not thousands of ‘Chewys’ loaded with love that are desperately seeking homes in shelters which are at max capacity, rescues are full!”

LOOKPhotographer Gets Dogs Adopted With Stunning “Cones of Fame”

CDMR says that they are waiting to see if the mother reaches out to the shelter in order to reclaim Chewy – however, since the woman was a victim of domestic abuse, she may not want to reveal her identity for the sake of her own safety.

“We will absolutely reunite should she come forward and wants him and is in the position to care for him safely,” says the shelter. “Her safety is a major concern and she may not be able to risk coming forward and CMDR asks that you respect her decision as it is hers and hers alone to make.”

Whether he is reunited with his previous owner, or he finds a new home, one thing’s for sure: Chewy is going to be adored wherever he goes.

These Scientists Have Managed to Stop the Progress of Alzheimer’s in Animals

This treatment is making headlines in South America for its groundbreaking ability to halt the development of Alzheimer’s in animals.

Brazilian researchers discovered the importance of a protein that reestablishes the electrical circuits in the brain, thus stopping the effects of the disease.

Scientists of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) are hoping that the achievement is the beginning of a treatment for the disease.

RELATED VIDEO: See The Moment This Man Learned His Missing Wife with Alzheimer’s Was Found

It is estimated that the illness affects over 35 million people worldwide today. Additionally, it is the main cause of dementia in senior citizens.

The researchers of the Science Institute of the UFRJ focused the study on the TGF beta 1, a substance that is naturally produced by the brain. They discovered that when elderly brains suffered a reduction of TGF beta 1, the neurons stopped communicating with each other.

In laboratory studies, the researchers already reduced most of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s. The animals were able to recover recent memories, which are the most damaged during the initial stages of the disease. Though the research team leader says this is an important milestone, he warns that the knowledge does not yet translate into a cure.

“What we did was just a step towards the treatment – now we have to study the consequences in middle and long terms,” says researcher Flavia Gomes in Espanol. “But our work is surely contributing towards the final cure.”

Watch Cop Sing to Blind Woman After Fixing Her Microwave

While fixing microwaves and singing songs may not be considered a requirement for “protecting and serving”, this cop is being hailed for the kindness behind the badge.

Officer Kristian Johnson of the Logan Police Department in Utah was deployed to a blind woman’s house after she dialed 911.

The woman says that even though she didn’t have an emergency, her microwave was broken and she wanted help fixing it.

After Johnson stopped by her house to fix the appliance, he asked if the woman needed anything else.

The woman asked if Johnson could sing a song, saying that she would like to hear “You Are My Sunshine”. Despite Johnson cautioning that he wasn’t a very good singer, he launched into the tune with gusto.

Overjoyed by his kindness, the woman said that she would “never forget” that morning’s events.

Man Was Colorblind For 50 Yrs, Bursts into Tears Seeing Trees in Color For First Time

It’s impossible for most to imagine what it’s like living 50 years and only seeing in black and white.

Chris Smelcer’s family felt a lot of sympathy, so on the occasion of his half-century birthday, they wanted to give him something extra special: the gift of color.

While most men who claim to be colorblind are usually just color deficient – meaning they can’t see color as well as an average person – Smelcer is unable to see most colors altogether.

After putting them on, however, he can’t help but cry over the sudden burst of colors that surround him – everything from the shade of his jeans, to the hue of the trees, to his bright birthday balloons —they all left him in a state of wonder.

“Chris was so overwhelmed I don’t think he has tears left,” says Delila Watson Smelcer in the video description.

Dog Hailed As Hero After Rescuing “Ghost” Cat From Storm Drain

It had been weeks since Ghost the cat first went missing – but thanks to a local dog, he was rescued from an unlikely place: under a manhole cover.

Shelly Colette and her border collie-Labrador mixed dog named Cash were walking through Sackville, New Brunswick when Cash stopped at a manhole cover and refused to move.

Despite Colette’s efforts to coax him away, the dog wouldn’t budge.

WATCHDog Hailed as Hero After Bear Starts Chasing Humans

Curious over her pup’s persistence, she peered into the manhole cover only to see an orange tabby cat trapped below. Colette recognized the feline as the cat from several lost posters that had been plastered around the city for weeks.

She then dialed the owner of the cat, Izzy Francolini.

Francolini contacted city officials who were unable to lift the rusted manhole cover from its place. The workers then broke the cover with several sledgehammers, but the noise only served to scare Ghost further into the sewers.

After almost nine hours of waiting, however, Ghost finally resurfaced – much to Francolini’s joy.

RELATEDAbused Shelter Dog a Hero for Finding Naked Girl Shivering in Cold

Apart from sporting two ticks and being a little underweight, Ghost was in surprisingly good shape.

The feline was reportedly named after his infamous habit of going missing for ages at a time. According to The Star, Ghost once disappeared for a month until he was found inside of a wall.

If it hadn’t been for Cash, however, Ghost could have been missing for a lot longer than a few weeks – or worse.

“I love that dog dearly,” Francolini told The Star.

World’s First Battery-free Phone Could Spell the End of Charging Cables and Dead Batteries

Say goodbye to frayed charging cables, and say hello to endless battery life.

That’s because researchers at the University of Washington have just constructed the world’s first battery-free phone.

The phone is powered by a few microwatts of ambient radio signals and light that are harvested from the surrounding area.

By eliminating the need for phones to convert analog sound into digital data, researchers were able to create a device that required little to no energy to perform basic functions. Additionally, the phone is only constructed out of cheap, off-the-shelf parts, and a circuitboard.

CHECK OUT: 3D Printed Organ-On-a-Chip May Replace Animal Testing

The team was also able to make Skype calls on the phone, proving that it could be used to contact a base station.

“We’ve built what we believe is the first functioning cellphone that consumes almost zero power,” said the study’s co-author Shyam Gollakota. “To achieve the really, really low power consumption that you need to run a phone by harvesting energy from the environment, we had to fundamentally rethink how these devices are designed.”

The current prototype only performs the basic functions of sending and receiving calls, and transmitting speech. The phone conveys speech by detecting the vibrations of the speaker’s voice and translating the words into analog data, rather than digital.

RELATEDWorld’s Largest 3D Printer Makes Almost Zero-Cost Homes Out of Mud

“The cellphone is the device we depend on most today. So if there were one device you’d want to be able to use without batteries, it is the cellphone,” said faculty lead Joshua Smith, professor in both the Allen School and UW’s Department of Electrical Engineering. “The proof of concept we’ve developed is exciting today, and we think it could impact everyday devices in the future.”

While the prototype currently needs a base station within 31 feet in order to operate, the team is next looking to integrate the technology into WiFi infrastructure.

“You could imagine in the future that all cell towers or Wi-Fi routers could come with our base station technology embedded in it,” said co-author Vamsi Talla. “And if every house has a WiFi router in it, you could get battery-free cellphone coverage everywhere.”

If You Donate to Feed Homeless Pets, You Can Watch Your Meal Being Served in Real Time

Have you ever felt like you didn’t have enough time to volunteer? Do you ever feel like you haven’t had enough money to donate to charities? Do you ever wonder what happens to the animals at your local shelter?

That’s where Teddy Food comes in.

Teddy Food is an online platform that offers live streams of the animals being helped at rescue shelters. Users who donate to one of the seven shelters connected through the platform can watch as their donation is put to good use in real time.

CHECK OUTSwipe Right For Unconditional Love – App Pairs You With Adoptable Pets

Since the organization was created roughly one year ago, the feature has encouraged viewers to help over 250 different animals around the world – all from the comfort of their computer screens. Whether it’s feeding a young homeless kitten, or paying for the surgery of a dog across the country, or donating toys to neglected animals; Teddy Food makes volunteering virtually effortless – and a lot more transparent.

The more homeless pets that users take care of, the more “Teddy Points” they earn. Donors can then share their scores on social media to encourage friends into participating.

Since animal shelters have started connecting to the platform, they found that pets are more likely to find homes, and rescue organizations are more likely to find sponsorship. Pair that with the amount of users who get to benefit from watching their money help cute animals, and the technology really creates a win-win situation.

RELATEDRetirement Home For Unwanted Senior Pets Offers Love In Final Years

Teddy Food was first created when Pavel and Varya Kotosova were taking their dog Teddy for a walk outside of their home in Moscow. While on their leisurely stroll, Teddy ended up leading his humans to an injured dog who was abandoned in the wild.

“Teddy ran into the bushes and began to bark. Then he ran back to us. Then back into the bushes. And he did it until we got there,” 25-year-old Pavel told Good News Network.

After taking the dog to the shelter, Pavel and 24-year-old Varya realized that even though they knew the pup was in good hands, they wanted to know what would happen to her in the future.

WATCHDog Chained Up For 15 Years is Finally Freed

“The dog had a broken leg and had wounds,” added Pavel. “Fortunately, our friends took the dog home [from the shelter].”

Teddy Food has since connected to 7 shelters in Russia, but they plan on expanding further into the USA, Japan, Germany, the UK, Austria, Australia, and others. The company currently has a Kickstarter that will be raising funds over the summer for their international expansion and the creation of a mobile app.

“Our mission is to make supporting homeless pets as easy as watching a YouTube video,” says Pavel. “We want to make it possible for anyone to help with just a few clicks. We want there to be more true heroes saving our little brother’s lives every day!”

France Plans to Eliminate Coal by 2022 and Petrol Cars by 2040

French representatives have just announced plans to ban the use of petrol and diesel fueled cars by 2040.

The decision was released just one day after Swedish automotive company Volvo announced that they would only be producing electric and hybrid vehicles starting in 2019.

In order to encourage the conversion to clean energy vehicles, poorer French citizens will be given premiums that will allow them to trade their petrol-powered car for a cleaner alternative.

CHECK OUTIndia Plants Record-breaking 66 Million Trees in 12 Hours

France is one of several countries that have already announced plans to ban the use of petrol and diesel cars in accordance with the Paris Agreement. Norway, whose automotive market is already occupied by 36% electric vehicles, plans on exclusively selling clean vehicles by 2025.

India has also announced efforts to eliminate petrol and diesel cars by 2030. In order to ensure the automotive electricity is coming from a clean grid, the nation’s government is investing in the construction of 10 new alternative energy plants to replace their heavy dependence on coal.

The initiative is just one of the green energy solutions employed by Nicolas Hulot – France’s new ecology minister – to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement. Another of the proposals set by Hulot was ending the use of coal-generated electricity by 2022. These actions are all part of the country’s ambitious plan to become carbon neutral by 2050.

RELATEDFrance Opens World’s First Solar Road

Environmental benefits aside, the ban on fossil fuels will also save tons of hazardous chemicals from clogging the atmospheres of French cities.

According to Sherry Boschert, author of Plug-in Hybrids: The Cars that Will Recharge America, using hybrids and electric cars that draw power from a main grid drastically reduce the amount of nitrous oxide released into the air by 32% to 99%. Nitrogen oxides have been shown to have extremely dangerous effects on people’s respiratory health, as well as the environment. Electric vehicles that draw power from a coal-fueled main grid also still manage to reduce CO2 from the atmosphere by anywhere from 17% to 77%, depending on the area.

In addition to Hulot’s plans for clean energy vehicles, the French administration also plans on banning the importation of palm oil and unsustainably grown soya. Both are large contributors of deforestation in the Amazon and Congo, which amounts to roughly 10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.
