Clint Eastwood Donates Oceanfront Land to Preserve Open Space for Public

Attention nature lovers: actor and director Clint Eastwood just made your day.

The Academy Award winner has donated 79 acres of prime beachfront property to the Big Sur Land Trust. It’s part of a project to restore the Carmel River’s historic flood plain to reduce flood-related problems, while enhancing wildlife habitats along the river and creating new trails linking state and regional open spaces.

The gift, made through the Clint and Maggie Eastwood Trusts, follows another 49-acre gift the couple presented in 1997.

The former mayor of Carmel, California, Eastwood has worked for years to help acquire land surrounding the city for the project—which involves removing a dam, restoring wetlands, and returning part of a golf course to the wild. The California Department of Natural Resources believes the completed project will make the Carmel one of the best restored rivers in America.Eastwood land donation-BigSur-land trust released

“To see the restoration, the flood plain improvements, the benefits to the community and the environment all coming together is truly satisfying,” Eastwood said.

6 Reasons to Be Happy the New Pokemon App is Taking Over the Streets

pokemon-go-nintendo pic

Since the release of Pokémon GO for smartphones Thursday, the augmented reality game, which uses GPS to display characters roaming in your real world, has become a global phenomenon.

When you walk around your streets, the app shows you your surroundings and Pokémon characters are lurking around ready to be caught. Players can also grab useful items for their team at real locations, like a bus stop, park bench, or other landmark.

With millions of adults and kids becoming hardcore fans and hitting the streets to play the game, Nintendo’s stock rose 30 percent. But money and fun are not the only reasons to be grateful for the game. Here are six reasons it’s a good thing this game is taking over the world for a while…

1) You end up getting a LOT of exercise

Nintendo built this game to get people off the couch. For one thing, you have to walk a certain distance to hatch incubated eggs that will turn into Pokémon. If you are in a car, it doesn’t work. The game tracks your movement using GPS, and includes a speed limit that only allows slow biking or walking to hatch your eggs.

One fan tweeted famously that Pokémon GO did more to boost exercise levels in one weekend than Michelle Obama achieved in eight years.

2) You get exposed to historical and artistic landmarks

Besides just walking around looking for Pokémon, gamers can visit PokéStops, locations marked in-game by blue squares which allow you to gather in-game items — such as Eggs, Poké Balls, Potions, and more. PokéStops are usually cultural landmarks of some sort. These can include things like public art, murals and sculptures, unique architecture, and historical landmarks.

pokemon go screenshots

Anath Sheridan wrote on Quora, “I’ve already found several murals and buildings I didn’t know existed.”

3) You run into old friends—and make new ones

Kids who used to play the original Gameboy Pokémon together are bumping into each other as adults, years later, as they gather in parks, near churches and schools hunting around PokéStops. In the app, each player is on a team (red or blue, for instance) and, especially if they’ve chosen the same team, friendships rekindle as they start walking around together. A more common benefit is meeting new friends. It is instantaneous how conversations start—and new relationships might be hatching just like Poké eggs.

4) Local businesses are benefiting from new customers

Thousands of businesses across the country discovered they had become part of Pokémon GO, and some are reaping the benefit. ComicBook.com explains, “Reactions to the sudden uptick in business ranged from bemused to annoyance, but Pokémon GO does represent a unique opportunity for some businesses, especially those that rely on walk up traffic, to make money.”

pokemon go-nintendo screenshotsIf your business is the site of a PokéStop or near to one, you can get the app and activate a Lure that can be seen on the maps of nearby players, alerting them to the increased amount of Pokemon in an area. Some businesses are also offering discounts for players that catch a Pokémon on site, or have a rare Pokémon they can show off. If you don’t want your business to be a part of Pokemon GO, you can submit a request on Niantic Labs site to remove your location from the game.

5) It is already helping people with depression

It makes sense when you think about it. Exercise is one of the best remedies for depression. Downloading the game has given people a new love for life.

TheAwesomeAdventurer wrote on Tumblr, “Rather than laying in bed all day, we are getting up and going outside and actually enjoying ourselves.”

6) You might just save someone’s life

Jeanette Warner, a mom in Buckeye, Arizona, spent much of the weekend playing the new game with her family. When visiting a nearby park she saw a young boy fall over from heat exhaustion after being bullied by two older boys, who were making him do sprints without water. After the bullies left, the boy tried to ride his bike into the desert, but couldn’t muster the strength. Warner called 911 and told KPHO-TV, “He fell face first into the rocks.”

NOTE of CAUTION: There are a couple downsides to this scavenger hunt adventure. Even though the company’s CEO says the game includes only public places considered “safe” for pedestrians, he urges people to play in groups.

There are times, though, when a spot might not be safe even for a group. At least one robbery has been reported in connection with Pokémon GO. Suspects in Missouri were arrested for stealing phones and wallets at one of the PokéStops from a group of teens.

It’s important in this game to be aware of what’s going on around you. When the app is opened, it launches with a warning message for users to keep their wits about them. And, most definitely don’t drive while looking at the screen. Help Your Friends Catch This!

Television Host Leeza Gibbons is using $700,000 in prize money from Celebrity Apprentice to give back to the often forgotten caregivers in the South Carolina neighborhood where she grew up.

One caregiver’s story that will not be forgotten is her father’s. He nursed Leeza’s mother for years until she died from a debilitating disease. Now, the family’s inspiring generosity will live on in their hometown, thanks to Gibbons winning the competition against 15 other celebrities during the 2015 season of the reality show.

She just opened “Leeza’s Care Connection,” a facility that features services to make life easier for people who take care of family members struggling with disabilities or terminal diseases.

Police, Firefighters Hear Mom’s Plea, Lonely Autistic Boy Gets Best Day Ever

Autistic Boy Police Firefighter Playdate FB Merrimack PD

When friends stood him up for a play date, police and firefighters saved the day for this autistic boy.

Eleven-year-old Austin Mendrala has been having a hard time finding other kids to play with this summer. When his mom would invite others to hang out in the park, no one was showing up. At one point, he cried for an hour over his loneliness, but the future was looking brighter.

His mother, Delilah, explained the situation on social media and put out an open call for kids to meet Austin at the local school playground in Merrimack, New Hampshire.

When they got there, no one was yet waiting, but a city detective had seen the post and rallied his friends at the police department.

Just as Austin and his mom were about to give up, a pair of police cruisers showed up and the officers made the boy the center of attention. They spent an hour with Austin, letting him sit in their patrol cars and try on their hats.

Before they left, a fire engine and ambulance pulled up—and firefighters and EMTs joined the play date.

Detective Chris Spillane says when he’d suggested the department help Austin have a good day at the playground, police officers “didn’t even hesitate” and some wanted to call their friends at the fire department.

While the police and firefighters hung out with Austin, more families started showing up — many with autistic kids who’d been facing the same lonely summer as Austin.

N. Carolina People Are Feeling Better With Free Hugs From Students -Watch

Beauty school students put on a beautiful display of humanity as they handed out much needed “free hugs” to police and passersby on the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina on Friday.

About a dozen students from Paul Mitchell the School hugged police officers and other strangers, letting them know that things aren’t as bad as they appear.

The scene generated smiles and tears — and a wave of people paying the random act of kindness forward.

The Typewriter Project: Collecting the Subconscious Cries of a City on a Website

typewriter project-750-featured

The Typewriter Project is back, beaming the subconscious of New York City to a website at the same time people are striking keys in a public park. It’s like a collective Twitter feed, capturing the thoughts of Americans at a time of chaos, anguish and questioning.

The literary installation created by The Poetry Society of New York invites passersby to join in a citywide linguistic exchange that exists both on paper, in the typing booth, and in the digital realm of the internet. The typewriter booth is outfitted with a vintage typewriter, a 100-feet of paper that is changed by the volunteers on site, and a custom-built USB Typewriter kit, which allows every keystroke to be collected, stored, and posted online for users to read, share, and comment upon.

The project is largely inspired by the idea of an Exquisite Corpse, a surrealist writing game in which several authors contribute to one poem.

“Obviously each entry in The Typewriter Project can be its own distinct lyric, but we hope that users will also be influenced by what was written before them on the scroll,” the group says on its website, subconsciousofthecity.com. “By creating a new and unique form of public dialogue, this project hopes to capture something of the sound, narrative, and nuance of specific corners of the city.”

Around the World in 80 Anthems: One Family, 80 Countries, 80 Anthems

Colusseum - 80 Anthems Youtube

My husband Tom and I have always been the adventurous types. Our 11 year old daughter, Capri, loves to sing and our 9 year old son, Bowen, adores computers. We know that life is short and we wanted to come up with something extraordinary to do as a family.

I had a flash of inspiration one evening: Tom wanted Capri to sing the national anthem at a hockey game. What if Capri sang anthems with children around the world? Why not find local children to sing with her while raising money for a good cause? Suddenly, “Around the World in 80 Anthems” was born!

RELATEDThey Advised Cancer Treatment, But 90-Year-old Hits The Road Instead

Was it possible to even go to 80 countries? Could Capri learn 80 anthems in the native language of each country? We thought so, but first we asked Capri and she agreed to learn 5 new anthems in a week (“easy!” was her response). We started the investigative process and our children started looking into who they wanted to help. We set a reasonable period of time to be away from our regular lives and came up with 9 months. While I started to figure out the logistics of hitting 80 countries within our deadline, Tom was busy talking to a friend in Burundi, Africa who highly recommended SOS Children’s Villages as a worthwhile charity.

Capri and Bowen researched the organization and determined that they really wanted to help orphaned and abandoned children. Bowen invented “Bowen’s Blog” where he would blog about each country and Capri would sing each country’s national anthem.

MOREMom Adopts Hospice Babies No One Else Wants

Everything fell into place and, after many months of hard work, we found ourselves at the airport ready to board our first flight. We had managed to secure several sponsors such as Flight Centre, Eurail and a few others, but we would cover the rest of the costs ourselves. All money raised would go to SOS Children’s Villages.

We have now been traveling for 7 months and have been to 65 countries. We have had incredible moments, met hundreds of amazing people, seen both fabulous and frightening places all while having the most unbelievable experiences of our lives. We have had the chance to stay at over 30 of the SOS Children’s Villages throughout the world during our travels. Because of this, our experience has been richer and truer to life than the average traveller due to the fact that we have eaten with the families, shared many hours with them and had the chance to become part of their local lives for a few days. Seeing and hearing stories about the abandoned or abused children, we can now more easily comprehend the pain of those affected most by the “adult problems” most prevalent in each region. Whether it was HIV or AIDS in South Africa, drug problems or sex-trafficking issues in South America or lack of education, alcohol and abuse in Eastern Europe, we saw first hand the effect that these problems had on the kids.

Our children have learned that, despite differences due to religion, skin color, social status and economic conditions, children everywhere have the same hopes and dreams, play the same games and all want to be loved and cared for. In singing together with the local children in their language, Capri forms a special bond.

Bowen has interviewed many young boys and has asked them, “If they had one wish, what would it be?” With answers as surprising to him as “a bicycle” (doesn’t everyone already have one??), “world peace” (a different perspective from a boy in Vietnam than one from Canada) or “good luck for my whole life” (a common wish in China).

RELATEDOrphan Best Friends Unknowingly Adopted By Families in Same Town

With 15 more countries to go, we continue to soak up each and every morsel of this enriching experience. Although we are nearing the end of our journey, we know that we want to continue to work to inspire other families and children to use their talents to move outside of their comfort zone by seeing life from a different perspective and by doing what they can to help those who need it most.
