Plane Passengers Are Left “In Awe” of Woman’s Kindness Towards Agitated Boy With Autism

Many of us have experienced the strain of being on an airplane when a young child starts getting upset – and while most passengers get agitated or try to ignore it, this woman made a difference, instead.

Rochel and Bentzion Groner were on a plane back from chaperoning a trip to Israel on Friday, and the flight was expected to take eight hours. After a three hour delay and one hour in the sky, many of the passengers were already exhausted.

Then, a young boy with autism started having a meltdown.

“His cries were heard throughout the plane and you could feel the tension among the other passengers,” wrote Bentzion on Facebook. “No one wanted to say anything but it was getting very uncomfortable.”

Rochel told Good News Network she had only one thought: “I gotta help this kid.”

She walked up to the boy and offered him her hand. When he took it, she led him to the back of the plane, took his shoes off so he could be more comfortable, and proceeded to quietly sit and play for several hours.

The boy’s mother traveled with her son to Africa for a year. She lives in the U.S. but is of African descent and barely spoke English. She did, however, know how to express her gratitude.

“Smiles are universal,” says Rochel. “She kept saying, ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you’.”

Rochel’s compassionate gesture came quite naturally, as she and Bentzion both work with Friendship Circle International and ZAB’s Place: a Jewish organization for children with disabilities and a thrift store that exclusively hires employees with special needs in Matthews, North Carolina.

“While most of the passengers watched in awe, little did they know that for Rochel this is her life,” wrote Bentzion. “If we just offer our hand in love and acceptance, miracles will follow.”

Watch a Dog’s Gripping Rescue of a Fawn Struggling at Sea

The perfect antidote for a hound chasing a frightened fox is this tale of a hound saving a frightened fawn.

Storm the English golden retriever was walking along a Long Island shore with his owner Mark Freeley on Sunday morning when the dog took off into the chilly ocean waters.

When Freeley tried to call the pup back, however, he stopped when he saw what Storm was chasing: a tiny baby deer struggling to stay afloat.

Without hesitating, Storm swam out to the fawn, grabbed it by the scruff of the neck, and started towing it back to shore.

Right when they touched down on dry land, the fawn took off running towards the woods before collapsing on the ground. Storm followed the critter, licking and nudging its neck to make sure it was okay.

Freeley then called a local animal rescue crew for help – but as the workers were walking up the beach, the deer became spooked once more and dashed back into the water.

This time, Freeley, his partner Eric Kutzing, and Frank Floridia of Strong Island Rescue went into the water after the fawn, using a rope to tow it back.

The deer, who was sporting an eye injury and several ticks, will be recovering at the animal rescue until it is ready to be released back into the wild.

Jilted Bride Donates $30,000 Reception to City’s Homeless

Despite being left high and dry, this bride decided to turn her heartbreak into kindness instead.

Sarah Cummins had spent two years planning her dream wedding with her fiancé Logan Araujo. The expensively lavish affair was supposed to take place at the Ritz Charles in Carmel, Indiana – one of the fanciest locations in the city.

But then, a week before the big day, the bride and groom decided to cancel the event.

While Cummins chose not to disclose the reason for the cancelation, she was still devastated by the sudden change of plans. Plus, the celebration came with a non-refundable $30,000 deposit.

Instead of letting the food and decor go to waste, however, the 25-year-old Purdue University student called local homeless shelters and invited the residents to what would have been her wedding celebration.

Over 150 of the city’s homeless residents showed up to enjoy a deliciously prepared dinner and reception. Additionally, news of Cummins’s good deed spread across social media, inspiring other locals to donate formal attire for the guests.

“For me, it was an opportunity to let these people know they deserved to be at a place like this just as much as everyone else does,” Cummins told Indystar.

He Proposed During Garth Brooks Show, Singer Stops Mid-song and Offers to Pay For Honeymoon

This couple were given the best engagement gift anyone could ask for – and they received it only seconds after she said yes.

Drew Bargsley and Chelsea Townsend were enjoying the Garth Brooks concert in Oklahoma City on Saturday night when Bargsley interrupted the show with an important question.

In a grand display of romance, Bargsley waited until the country singer started playing “Unanswered Prayers” to get down on one knee and pop the question.

After Townsend said yes, Brooks took notice of the sweet gesture and brought the song to a screeching halt.

The musician briefly chatted with the couple and asked whether they had a date or honeymoon destination in mind.

When they said no, Brooks then said that he would be more than happy to pay for the honeymoon if they decided on Hawaii.

Bargsley and Townsend were shocked – and understandably delighted.

The happy couple has since become inundated with congratulatory well wishes. Bargsley posted the gleeful news to his Facebook wall on Saturday.

“When you shut down the ENTIRE GARTH BROOKS CONCERT proposing to the love of your life… oops,” said Bargsley.

101-Year-old Breaks World Running Record: “I Missed My Nap for This”

101-year-old Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins just broke a world record – and she is pretty nonchalant about it.

By running in the National Senior Games in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday, the senior completed the 100-meter dash in 40.2 seconds, which is six seconds less than the previous world record for women over 100 years old.

She also became the oldest woman to compete in the USA Track and Field Outdoors Masters Championships (USATF).

“[I] missed my nap for this,” she said casually, according to USATF.

Hawkins is a widow with four children, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Despite her age, Hawkins reportedly enjoys biking and gardening, as well as running.

In fact, Hawkins says she only recently took up track and field because of her constant activity outdoors, according to the Washington Post.

“I’m always outside and the phone always rings, and I come running in is how I knew I could run,” said Hawkins last month.

After 1,300 Years Gone, the Fabled Lynx Could Return to UK Wilderness

For the first time in over 1,000 years, the lynx could be reintroduced to the wilderness of the British Isles.

Lynx Trust UK has submitted a permit to Natural England – the nation’s governmental department for environmental issues – for a 5-year trial run of the species’ reintroduction. If approved, the organization could be granted permission to release 6 to 10 lynx into Kielder Forest in Northumberland.

The organization says that while lynx were native to the area, records show that they may have been hunted into extinction by early settles. Because the native wildcats have been absent from England’s ecosystem for so many centuries, there has been a massive overpopulation of deer in the region.

CHECK OUT: Manatee Population Has Rebounded 500 Percent, No Longer Endangered

Lynx Trust UK believes that by reintroducing the wildcats to the area, their diet will primarily consist of deer, rather than local livestock. However, conservationists say that farmers will be compensated for any sheep or cattle that are harmed by lynx.

The Lynx UK Trust website states: “Of course, predicting precisely how lynx will live here is impossible, and the reason why a trial, monitored in great detail, is so important, however it can also be said that the lynx is extremely consistent in most things, and we expect to only see minor variances in behavior (for example, we expect relatively small territories with a relatively high proportion of deer in diet, because of the high density of deer in the UK).

Additionally, the lynx reintroduction could bring in millions of dollars worth of tourism for local businesses.

What is it About America That Are You Grateful For?

Despite a rocky political atmosphere, it’s important, especially around Independence Day, to look on the bright side of being an American.

This summer, Media production company Soul Pancake asked dozens of American citizens ages 1 through 100 what they were grateful for about living in the U.S.A.

The people who they interviewed also ranged in gender, ethnicity, and ability – and their answers to the question were equally as diverse.

White House Intervenes to Grant Rejected Afghan Girls Entry to U.S. for Robotics Contest

The Trump Administration overturned its recent decision to deny the visas of a female team of Afghani students participating in a world robotics competition.

The drama of the school girls’ denied visas was widely covered by mainstream media. Even though Afghanistan is not included in the recent travel ban on six Muslim-majority countries, their visas for the competition were twice rejected. At the same time, visas were granted for girls traveling to the U.S. from countries subjected to the travel ban, such as Gambia.

Had they not been granted entry, they would have had to participate via Skype as their robot competed in the event.

But earlier this week, reportedly with the encouragement of President Donald Trump, the Department of Homeland Security overturned the decision and the Afghani students are packing their bags.

An official in the Department, David Lapan, said the decision to give the Afghan girls entry into the United States was granted after receiving the appeal through the State Department, a move which AP reported was initiated by Trump.

The non-profit group First Global, which is the organization responsible for the competition, expects over 160 students from more than 150 countries to participate in the robotic games.

“I truly believe our greatest power is the power to convene nations, to bring people together in the pursuit of a common goal and prove that our similarities greatly outweigh our differences,” said First Global President Joe Sestak in a statement. “That is why I am most grateful to the US Government and the State Department for ensuring Afghanistan, as well as Gambia, would be able to join us for this international competition this year.”

How to Stop the Runaway Train of Anxiety in 4 Steps

Anxiety can feel like a runaway train – and when it’s coming, we often tell ourselves a story; we over identify with what’s happening; and unfortunately, this only serves to intensify the speed of the train, rather than slow it down.

There is so much research about how meditation helps with anxiety. Regular meditation will slow down your system, allow you to discern the messages that the anxiety is sending you, and it helps you to become better practiced at returning to the present moment. These tools are enormously important when suffering with anxiety, and they will undoubtedly change your life in big and small ways. But in the meantime, I have included here 4 easy steps that have helped me to stop the runaway anxiety train.

I personally suffered from anxiety for as long as I can remember. It didn’t matter what was happening, good or bad, I always felt anxious. It was always there, like a fly that wouldn’t go away. In elementary school I would look around at my friends and they didn’t seem to feel the same way. They played and laughed and ran on the playground without having a care in the world – but not me. I felt confused, and sometimes paralyzed, about how to even join in on the swings. My quest to understand and help my anxiety led me to therapy, meditation, and mindfulness. It also led me to eventually becoming a psychotherapist who teaches meditation and mindfulness practices.

CHECK OUTDoing Yoga On A Rooftop Cleansed My Chakras (Learn To Do It At Home)

What happens to you when your boss says “I need to talk to you” as a deadline is looming? Or when you need to have a “difficult” conversation with a loved one? Most people would report feelings of fear or nervousness, but for the people who suffer from anxiety, these feelings can be debilitating – just like how I felt on the playground.

Having tools that I could use in the moment for handling anxiety were the keys that really helped me to start dealing with my anxiety – beyond the 10-20 minutes that I was on my meditation cushion. These tools were what ultimately gave me the relief I was looking for because I not only had something to use on the spot, but eventually I integrated the life changes through practicing over time

So, here are the 4 easy steps:

1. Get familiar with what your signs of anxiety are.

You might be thinking: “It’s pounding in my chest, my palms get sweaty, my head gets foggy, etc,” but what I am talking about here is really getting to know the particulars of it. For example, I don’t often realize I am in a thinking pattern called “future tripping” (which is when I start trying to figure out the one thing that is impossible to figure out – the future!) What I do notice is that it feels like an elephant sat down on my chest. I don’t need to know the what’s or why’s – all I need to know is that it is one of my signs.

2. Do an active mindfulness practice

This doesn’t mean that you can just think about it – you have to actually do it. For me, I need to pause in the moment, take some deep breaths, feel the surfaces around me for texture and temperature, and get present.

RELATED: 10 Easy Ways You Can Practice Mindfulness

3. Check back in

It is imperative that I check back in to see if what I did was enough. What I so often hear from my patients is: “I tried it and it didn’t work.” Well, that’s true – what we try may not work, which is why we have to have a toolbox full of things to try. A carpenter may not always use just one tool to get a job done.

4. (If needed) Try something else

People often attempt to power through anxiety and lower its intensity ever so slightly, only to ratchet it back up again later. Instead, people might need to pull out another tool to try – I may need to walk away from what I am doing in that moment; I may need to call someone; or I might sit down and do a longer breathing practice. This is because it’s much better to be thorough in your mindfulness, rather than underestimating your anxiety and regretting it later.

MOREHow to Achieve Your Goals By Honoring Your Life

While practicing something new that is “good” for us, we often hit resistance and negative thinking about how it’s going. Instead, we have to be compassionate to ourselves. What we are talking about here is a “runaway train” – it will take practice, persistence, and patience to slow down that big heap of metal. Meditation and mindfulness practices give you the tools you need to recognize your signs of anxiety and utilize the self-compassion necessary for making the changes that you’ve been looking for in relation to your anxiety and your runaway train.

Uber Driver Saves Stranded Couple On the Way to Their Wedding – And Goes the Extra Mile

This Uber driver was more than happy to take this stranded couple to their wedding – but he had one condition for his kindness: he wanted to be an official witness.

David Scullion received a ride request from a panicked couple who had sustained a flat tire in Philadelphia on Friday. When Scullion arrived at the side of the road, however, he was shocked to find out that the duo was currently on their way to get married.

The couple, who asked to remain mostly unnamed, had been driving towards the Cecil County Courthouse in Maryland for their 12:30 appointment when their brand new Prius sustained the flat.

After the ceremony, the generous driver went one step further and ensured that their car was properly fixed before they parted ways.

Scullion says that he had been saving all of his Uber payments in order to buy a new car, but he was grateful that he could give the spouses their first official wedding gift.

“I could see these were two people that were really dedicated to each other,” Scullion told The News Journal. “I’ve always been a hopeless romantic.”

Anonymous Woman Picks Up $400 Tab For Firefighters After Their Work on California Blaze

It had been a long day for these 25 California firefighters.

The team had spent the evening fighting the 70-acre La Cadena blaze in La Loma Hills before going to Denny’s for a well-earned meal.

As they were eating, however, an anonymous woman told the restaurant staff that she wanted to pick up the tab for their meal – a $350 bill, plus a $50 tip.

“This woman paid for the meal of all of the firefighters at Denny’s at that time, plus tip for a total of $405; she also paid $100 for dessert for all of the crews,” said the post. “On behalf of all of the firefighters that worked on the La Cadena Fire … we thank you for your generous show of support. Groundbreaking Invention Helps Workers Stay Cool in 122 Degree Heat

These construction workers already have a demanding job, but thanks to this invention, their long days of labor have been made a lot easier.

Apart from the physical demands faced by workers currently building the World Cup 2022 arena in Qatar, spending long hours under the sun in soaring temperatures can be debilitating—even deadly.

To tackle the problem, the country’s researchers have come up with a new way to keep workers comfortable: a self-cooling hard hat.

Ironically, the hard hat‘s cooling feature depends on the sun. Powered by a solar panel on the top of the hat, the invention contains a small fan that maintains the temperature of the hat’s inner lining. The lining can cool the skin by as much as 50 degrees Fahrenheit (28°C), and lasts for about four hours.

CHECK OUT: 10-Year-old Boy Invents Device That Will Save Children From Hot Cars

“By reducing the temperature of the head and face, the rest of the body will naturally follow and ensure that workers have a constant flow of cooler air to refresh them throughout their day,” lead researcher Saud Abdul-Aziz Abdul-Ghani told CNN.

With temperatures in Qatar climbing to 122° Fahrenheit (50°C), the helmets have been hailed as a groundbreaking achievement.

Qatar representatives say 18,000 laborers are already working on the construction of eight different World Cup stadiums.

We wonder if the athletes will be begging for the same heat-beating headgear.

Fearless Rats Are Caring for Orphan Kittens at This Loving Cat Cafe

Cats and rats may not seem like the ideal partners, but these little critters are the best of buds – despite their obvious differences.

The Brooklyn Cat Café has enlisted the special help of two rats named Remy and Emile. The rats have a very special job: to befriend and care for orphaned kittens.

Newborn kittens usually depend on their mothers for grooming and love, but since these young felines have been left without parents, they depend on Remy and Emile for nurturing.

RELATED VIDEO: Hummingbird Refuses to Leave the Dog Who Saved Her Life

The kittens are not always in need of babysitters – once they’re old enough to receive their vaccinations, they are free to join the larger community of older cats.

The idea for this unique inter-species relationship began several years ago when the Brooklyn Cat Café was hosting Ebony; a kitten who was diagnosed with feline leukemia. The virus is highly contagious in cats, which means that infected kitties have to be kept away from their non-infected peers.

As a means of providing Ebony with stimulation, the organization introduced her to Ivory the rat.

CHECK OUT: This Tortoise Accidentally Saved a Bunny’s Life – and Now They’re Best Buds

The duo’s friendship was rife with romping and play before Ebony passed away from the virus a while later. After observing the positive effects of their relationship, the café staff became dedicated to the use of rats as caregivers.

“Although rats and cats have adversarial relationships outside the terrarium – inside the kittens are the perfect size to have supervised romp and play sessions with the kittens,” says the café’s website. “Because the rats are not scared of the kittens, they don’t run away and the cats don’t hunt them. However, the kittens are convinced that the rat tails are there primarily for them to play with. Remy and Emile are ok with that so long as the kittens play gently with their tails.”

While Fishing, 11-yo Boy Reels in a Purse Lost 25 Years Ago… and Returns it to Owner

25 years after it disappeared, a long lost purse has resurfaced at the end of a boy’s fishing rod—and its owner was shocked to be reunited with it after an 11-year-old boy did the right thing.

Brodie Brocks was fishing at Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina when he reeled in a waterlogged purse.

Surprisingly, everything inside was intact: makeup, baby photos, credit cards, and even a high school diploma  — all inside a pocketbook with the owner’s name printed inside.

The purse had disappeared off of a boat that Bolt had boarded during a family cookout in 1992. Bolt assumed that it had been stolen – but she was even more happy to find that everything was still in relatively good shape.

Ex-prisoner En Route to Job Interview Takes Shirt Off Back to Save Man’s Life

Aaron Tucker was giddy with excitement when he landed a job interview for a bus boy position – but he never made it to the interview.

That’s because he ditched the bus on the way to the restaurant so he could save the life of an injured man.

Tucker has been attempting to find employment since he was released from a 22-month stint in prison over a weapons charge. The ex-convict, who is currently living in a halfway house, wants to use his future income to provide for his almost 2-year-old son.

So when he got a call for an interview at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Stamford, Connecticut, the father was beside himself with excitement.

When he was on his way to the restaurant, however, he saw a smoking overturned car in the middle of the road.

Alarmed by the sight, Tucker asked the bus driver if he was going to stop – and the driver said no. When Tucker asked if the driver would wait for him while he checked on the man in the overturned car, the bus driver also said no.

RELATEDJail Inmates Rush to Save Fallen Officer, Rather Than Escaping

Ignoring the fact that he would miss his interview, Tucker jumped off the vehicle and ran over to the smoking car. Inside, was a 61-year-old man who was bleeding from the head.

With the help of a few other pedestrians, Tucker pulled the man from the wreckage and used the crisp, clean shirt he had been given for the interview to tie a tourniquet around the stranger’s head. The Good Samaritan then waited until an ambulance arrived to transport the man to safety.

While Tucker obviously didn’t land the bus boy job, he has since received three other job offers in Westport. A GoFundMe campaign created by the community has also raised almost $14,000 in recognition of the man’s compassion.

Colorado Joins Paris Climate Agreement

Colorado has just joined the ranks of American states determined to meet the climate goals set by the Paris Agreement in 2015.

Gov. John Hickenlooper signed an executive order on Tuesday stating that Colorado will be attempting to meet the treaty’s expectations by cutting greenhouse gas emissions to 26% below what they were in 2005. State representatives hope to meet meet this goal before 2025.

The announcement comes as a follow-up to the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw from the international treaty last month. While withdrawing from the process could take several years to complete, hundreds of U.S. cities have already declared their support of the Paris Accord, regardless of the president’s position. Hawaii became the first U.S. state to declare their independent support of the treaty.

Additionally, the U.S. Climate and Health Alliance has already been supported by dozens of prominent state organizations and health practitioners intent on meeting the treaty’s goals.

Colorado plans on supporting the sustainable infrastructure by shifting their dependency on coal towards the soaring wind and solar markets. Representatives also plan on collaborating with Utah and Nevada in order to install more charging stations for electric cars.

“We will realize our commitment with colleagues in the West to build electric vehicle stations along major highway corridors throughout our state, along with Utah and Nevada, we will utilize the Volkswagen Mitigation Trust to reduce range anxiety within the electric vehicle market,” said Hickenlooper after his signing. “You’ll be able to drive an electric car from Colorado to the Pacific and Denver to Moffat County without fear.”

Watch Students Thank Their Professor By Surprising Him With His Own Muppet

If Sesame Street has taught us anything over the years, it’s that you should always be kind to others and appreciate your friends.

And that’s exactly what these students did in recognition of their Harvard professor’s outstanding work in children’s education.

Professor Joe Blatt has spent a large portion of his career with the Ivy League school working with the Sesame Workshop: the “Sesame Street”-based nonprofit dedicated to helping children learn and grow.

As a thank you for his inspiring work, his students at the Harvard Graduate School of Education reached out to Sesame Workshop CEO Jeffrey Dunn and commissioned the creation of a Muppet in Blatt’s likeness.

And the results are truly uncanny.

The students presented the replica to Blatt in a ceremony at the end of June – and Blatt’s delight over the thoughtful gift is evident.

“I’ll try to find some powerful and motivating way to use it in classes,” Blatt told the Boston Globe. “I’m also thinking seriously about never going to another faculty meeting and just propping this up in a chair so they think I’m there.”

When Dog Rescuer’s Car Breaks Down, Cop Lends His Own to Pick Up Pups

A dog rescuer and her husband were stranded without transportation on Fourth of July weekend – but when this compassionate cop heard about their mission, he didn’t even hesitate to hand them the keys to his own car.

Molly Nemec and other animal rescuers have spent the last six weeks organizing the transportation of several dogs who were destined for the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China.

Earlier this month, the pups were flown into Chicago’s O’Hare airport. Nemec, who lives in Lindstrom, Minnesota, planned on meeting with her cohorts halfway in between her home and Chicago in order to pass off the dogs, who would then be distributed to their prepared foster parents in Minnesota.

However, Nemec hit a pretty serious snag.

While on the way to the meet-up point, Nemec’s SUV overheated and broke down in Stillwater, Minnesota.

Because it was a holiday weekend, there were no rental SUVs available in the area, and they needed a car that was big enough to fit six dog kennels. Distraught, the rescuers realized that they had no way of getting to the checkpoint.

Then, 47-year-old Officer Brad Junker of the Stillwater Police Department arrived on the scene to check up on the stranded couple.

MOREAnimal Activist Makes Historic Deal With Meat Market to Close All Slaughterhouses

“They saw the empty kennels, dog bowls and such as they stepped out to talk with us. They learned of our mission to meet halfway in Wisconsin to pick up 6 very special critters. We talked to them about the dog & cat meat trade…” said Nemec. “Then one of the kind-hearted officers said: ‘I will let you use my Suburban to drive down to get these dogs.’”

Nemec was so shocked by the offer, she asked if he could repeat himself.

When he reiterated the statement, Nemec couldn’t help but break down in tears.

“I could not believe the kindness and generosity of this police officer who had never met us before! Sure enough, within 8 minutes he was back with his Suburban and helped us pack it up in no time so we could take off.”

RELATEDDog Slaughter Banned in South Korean Market

“I don’t know; it just seemed like the thing to do,” Junker told the Twin Cities Pioneer Press. “I said, ‘Why don’t you just take my vehicle? I have to work for another four or five hours. I won’t be using it. It’s just sitting in the parking lot, so why don’t you just use it?’”

Thanks to the help of Junker, Nemec’s mission was a success – all six pups were picked up in Wisconsin and dropped off with their foster parents.

“Thankfully, in the evening we got the dogs back to Stillwater where all the fabulous fosters were set to meet us (albeit later than we had hoped),” says Nemec. “To make the night even better, the police officer joined us since his shift was over and was able to see this transport come full circle and meet these precious pups! What an amazing day.”
