Norwegian Fighter Jet Drops Training Mission to Save Patient

F-16 fighter jet-cc-R Toth
An F-16 fighter jet came to the aid of a patient who was fighting for his own life.

A special lung and heart machine was needed for the complex critical care of one of their patients, who would die otherwise, but the hospital staff in Bodo, Norway had no such skill or equipment.

A facility in Trondheim, about 280 miles away (450 km), however, did have a machine available.

Hospital officials contacted the Air Force, which was just getting ready to send two fighter jets into the air from a base nearby. Luckily one of the planes was equipped with an external hold big enough to fit the life-saving equipment.

Normally the jets span such a distance in 35 minutes, an air squadron told a Norwegian newspaper, but the pilots “stepped on it” and arrived in just 25.

Watch Mama Hummingbird Hatch Eggs and Feed Her Chicks on Live WebCam

To foster appreciation of the Earth’s creatures, Explore.org specializes in setting up live cameras that capture animals in their natural habitat. Any time of the day or night you can check in with the live streams documenting nests of owls, eagles, and, especially adorable, hummingbirds.

In one hummingbird nest in La Verne, California, Little Bella the hummingbird has been nesting in the branches of a ficus tree since at least 2005. She diligently raises up to four or five broods every year, in a nest about the size of a golf ball.

In one video, you can see the two chicks hatching from the precious eggs that are slightly bigger than a Tic Tac breath mint.

After about two and a half weeks, the eggs hatch and Bella will discard the shells, protect her babies and feeds them a diet of insects and nectar.

At this age, while the chicks wait for their mother to return with more food, they nestle together, nearly bursting from the tiny nest, and stick out their long needle-thin tongues.

The babies fledge 21-25 days from hatch and are ready to discover the joys of flight.

Led by Charles Annenberg Weingarten, Explore.org uniquely combines global grantmaking for wilderness causes, filmmaking, and photography as tools to educate and inspire.

See what Bella and her chicks are up to right now—at a time when the chicks are nearly ready to fledge and could take flight at any moment—at the live streaming webcam here.

Man Who Lost 200 Pounds Invents App to Motivate Others w/ Virtual Work-Out Buddy

Arya Farzin screenshot Heat Running App

This man turned his dramatic weight-loss experience into an app so you’ll never have to run alone — linking “virtual running buddies” miles apart to help you get additional miles and motivation into your workout.

Arya Farzin weighed nearly 400 pounds in college — so much that he was embarrassed to leave his room. Determined to get in shape, he hit the gym and lost 80 pounds in four months — and a total of 200 by the time he got in peak condition.

He’s kept that weight off for eight years, becoming a professional trainer in the process, but remembers how difficult it was to hit the gym and track without the motivation of others.

Farzin says conflicting schedules make it difficult for people to have routine exercise partners, so he set out to create the Heat Running app, letting you have virtual running buddies anytime, anywhere.

Once you open the app and choose the distance you plan to run, it connects you with other runners around the world.

Hot Dog! Chefs Rally For Local Restaurant, Re-Opening to Pay Cancer Medical Bills

Skippys Hot Dogs Volunteers GoFundMe

While locals mourned the loss of a beloved hot dog restaurant, fellow chefs got together with a recipe for reopening the place and giving it a proper send-off, while raising money for the owner’s cancer medical bills.

For one week only, a different chef each day will bring his or her own style to the resurrected menu at Skippy’s Hot Dogs in Winston-Salem, North Carolina — with all the proceeds going to owner Mike Rothman’s medical expenses.

LOOK: Coffee Shop Employees Console Widow Through Window of Drive-Through

Rothman suddenly closed his business a month ago after a surprise diagnosis led to brain surgery on a tumor. It left him with motor control issues on one side of his body. Unable to work, it looked like Mike had rolled and sold its last homemade soft pretzel.

But fellow chefs jumped in to help, first with a GoFundMe page raising more than $15,000, and then with the idea of a one week finale for Skippy’s where volunteers will donate their time and rally neighbors to celebrate the local institution one last time.

My passion is baseball. I’ve always been told baseball is for boys. At age 44 I attended the first Women’s Red Sox Fantasy Camp. Playing baseball with other women, being coached by highly skilled women, seeing women umpires, changed me.

Last month I played in a women’s baseball tournament in Australia. It was transformational. I met some of the most kick-butt women I’ve ever known. We ranged in age from 14 to 54 and in skill level from elite to beginner. We played on the same teams and on the same field.

New Stem Cell Therapy Improves Life for Heart Failure Patients

Heart Map - Matthew Brobeck

A new breakthrough in stem cell therapy has showed great improvement among patients suffering from end-stage heart failure.

In a study published by the University of Utah, patients treated with stem cells harvested from their own bone marrow – also known as ixmyelocel-T cell therapy – had experienced 37 percent fewer cardiac events (including deaths and hospital admissions related to heart failure) than did a placebo control group.

RELATEDCancer Cells Self-Destruct With New Therapy, Patients Live Longer

“For the last 15 years everyone has been talking about cell therapy and what it can do. These results suggest that it really works,” says lead author and cardiac surgeon Amit N. Patel, M.D., M.S., director of Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine.

Follow-up exams of the patients being treated with ixmyelocel-T cell therapy also revealed that there were less side effects and complications, as well as fewer deaths than the placebo-controlled group.

Abused Kenyan Girls To Live in Castle Thanks To Crowdfunding By One Mom

Queens Castle Girls - Go Fund Me

Many little girls dream of being princesses. These kids, who have suffered so much, are destined to be living as queens in a castle thanks to the kindness of strangers.

Rafiki Mwema – meaning “Loyal Friend” – is a nonprofit home that educates, houses, and cares for young Kenyan girls who have been sexually abused. The home where the children stay, however, fills up quickly. Girls who have grown into teenagers often end up having to go back to their villages without the emotional support they need.

RELATEDNigerian Army Rescues More Than 800 Boko Haram Hostages

When they heard the stories of teens forced to leave the home, 7,700 people around the world opened their hearts – and wallets – to make sure these girls could stay together.

In a GoFundMe page set up by Australian mom Sarah Rosberg, a goal of $75,000 was set to construct a second home designed specifically for the teenagers – fondly called the Queens – who had grown up in Rafiki. Over the course of just one short month, more than double that amount–$200,000–was raised for the new residence.

Hoover was airlifted on Friday from where he was confiscated in Peru to an animal sanctuary known as Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida. His new enclosure is equipped with a spring-fed lake, trees, grass, space to romp, and veterinarians on stand-by to assist in Hoover’s recovery.

Ukraine Football Captain Gives More Than Trophies To City and its Orphans

Darijo Srna

Donestk, a large industrial city in eastern Ukraine, has been one of the major centers of violence and fighting in the conflict between the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian separatist groups that began in April 2014 after the annexation of Crimea by Russian Forces. It also is the home of Shaktar Donestk FC, the second most successful football club in Ukraine.

Darijo Srna, the longstanding and fiercely loyal captain of the club, has taken it upon himself to assist more than just goals for his city, but also the children and orphans affected by the fighting that has consumed much of the area.

RELATED: UK Football Stars Buy Hotel, Invite Homeless to Stay For Winter

He contributed to the Let’s Help Children project carried out by a Humanitarian Center, buying 20,000 tons of tangerines and covering the cost of their distribution to schools across the city; with each piece of fruit being handed out with an autographed greeting card.

But the Croatian-born athlete didn’t stop there, he continued giving back to the city which has given so much to him over his long career. 450 children aged 5 to 14 from cities such as Donetsk, Makiyivka and Sedovo, received shorts and shirts bearing the number 33 and the name of the Pitmen’s captain. He also sent out about 20,000 brand new stationary sets, and trucks full of sporting equipment to 23 boarding schools in 11 cities and towns all over the region.

His latest display of generosity was buying 100 laptops for children suffering from speech and brain disorders, and cerebral palsy. The laptops would come pre-loaded with necessary programs and special teaching aids to help the children get the most out of their education.

Jordan’s Muslim King to Fund Restoration of Jesus’ Tomb in Holy Sepulchre

By mprivoro, CC license
By mprivoro, CC license

The Muslim royal who was instrumental in preserving the site of Christ’s baptism in Jordan, has now sent a donation to Christians to fund the preservation of another sacred  site.

“His Majesty King Abdullah II has issued a Royal Benefaction (makruma) to provide for the restoration of Jesus’ Tomb in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, at His Majesty’s personal expense.” The news was announced by Jordanian press agency Petra, which says that the Hashemite Court sent an official letter to the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III.

It will therefore be a Muslim sovereign and direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad who will foot part of the bill for the restoration of the niche in the Holy Sepulchre, the place of Jesus’ burial and resurrection in Jerusalem, which has, for centuries, been the most venerated Christian shrine in the world.

RELATED: Christians Protect Mosques on Fri., Muslims Guard Churches on Sunday

The restoration project was announced two weeks ago – the day before Easter for the western world. Restoration work is needed because of the progressive alteration of the mortars as a result of condensed moisture from the breath of thousands of pilgrims and candle smoke.

The work is based on a specific project carried out by the National Technical University of Athens which all parties agree on: the work should take eight months, with completion expected at the start of 2017. Until yesterday, funds for restoration would have needed to come from the three denominations, public contributions disbursed by the Greek government and private benefactors.

The announcement from Amman now changes the game and was immediately and warmly welcomed by the head of the largest Christian community in the Holy Land. “His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III said that His Majesty King Abdullah embodies in deed, and not only in word, the shared living of Muslims and Christians all over the world and particularly in the Holy Land,” Petra news agency reports.

“Jordan’s role in protecting Christian existence in the Holy Land is clear and undeniable,” the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem continued, “King Abdullah spearheads the efforts of all Jordanians to sow the seeds of love and brotherhood between Muslims and Christians.”

CHECK OUT: Church Opens Tiny House Village With Electricity to Care for Seattle Homeless

It is also worth noting that in his statement, Theophilos III explicitly links Jordan’s donation to the Pact of Umar, the agreement reached in 637, when Jerusalem was conquered by the Arabs. On that occasion, Caliph Umar, Muhammad’s second successor, respected the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, leaving it as a Christian place of worship instead of turning it into a mosque.

It is thanks to this first important gesture made by the Caliph, that the niche of the Holy Sepulchre has survived as a Christian place of worship in the face of the many vicissitudes Jerusalem has faced throughout its history. Today – at a time when a so-called caliph is desecrating Christian sites in Syria and Iraq – reaffirming the Pact of Umar, is intended as a very clear message to the Muslim world, starting from its history and identity.

Peruvian Farmer Wins David-and-Goliath Battle Against Mining Giant

Maxima Acuna-winner-Goldman Environmental Prize

In a David-and-Goliath battle, community activists in Peru have, so far, succeeded in shutting down the creation of a $5 billion open-caste gold and copper mine next to a pristine lake.

The story of Maxima Acuña – a farmer who owns a 60-acre plot of land on the exact site where the  giant Newmont Mining Corporation has pursued a land grab, is a reminder that even the world’s largest companies can be held in check by activists.

The mother of four was awarded one of six prestigious Goldman Environment prizes this year for leading the fight. Here is part of her story:

With promises of jobs and economic prosperity, the Peruvian government awarded mining licenses across the country. Despite these promises, rural peasant farmers, who were rarely consulted in the development of mining projects, largely continue to live in poverty. In many communities, mining waste has polluted the local waterways, affecting local people’s drinking water and irrigation needs.

The plans for Conga Mine called for draining four nearby lakes. One of these would be turned into a waste storage pit, threatening the headwaters of five watersheds and an entire ecosystem of high-altitude biologically diverse wetland.

Maxima and her husband had built a small house on the their property and lived a peaceful life raising their children. The family lived off the potatoes and other crops they grew, and kept sheep and cows for milk and cheese. Occasionally, she made the long trek into town to sell vegetables, dairy, and woolen handicrafts. Acuña never learned to read or write, but she understood that the land was her lifeblood.

CHECK OUT: Obama Quietly Signs Ban on Products Made by Children and Slaves

When the mining company tried to throw her off the land, and sued her, Acuña sought legal help from GRUFIDES, an environmental NGO in Cajamarca that was representing local community members in cases against mining companies. With help from her attorney, Mirtha Vásquez, she appealed the ruling and began gathering documents such as her land title that proved she held legitimate property rights to the land claimed by Newmont.

In December 2014, the courts ruled in Acuña’s favor. A previous prison sentence was overturned and the court halted her eviction. As a result of this legal victory, the Conga mine has been kept out of Tragadero Grande. Newmont has been unable to move forward with any mining in the area around Laguna Azul.

Despite the trauma and exhaustion, Acuña maintains a remarkable sense of optimism in her continued fight for justice. She has become widely known throughout Latin America for her inspirational courage in standing up against a multinational mining company. The Conga mine has not moved forward. The community has rallied behind Máxima and her victory has brought new life to the struggle to defend Cajamarca’s páramos, water supplies, and people from large-scale gold mining.

Man Delivers Sweet Poem Instead of Getting Mad Over Towed Car (WATCH)

Getting your car towed typically doesn’t amount to a positive experience for the driver whose car is towed, or for the poor workers who have to collect money from angry citizens at the impound lot–but this young poet decided to change that.

“Instead of getting pissy about it, I made a video like you wouldn’t expect,” he told Good News Network.

He wrote a sweet little poem to recite directly to the towing officer, and even brought an interpretive dancer to illustrate.

Though the worker is not pictured, you can hear the appreciative tone in his voice as he says, “That was very good! You should have filmed that.”

After being in labor for three hour and 12 minutes—with the baby’s fluke already extended outside her mother’s body, a Pacific white-sided dolphin gave birth on Monday at Shedd Aquarium, a sight never seen in the wild.

This was the first pregnancy for the mammal named Katrl, and more than 40 members of the animal care and veterinary teams were standing by, giving rubs and snacks of herring, and witnessing the smoothly proceeding birth.

At 9:14 a.m., Katrl swam close to the surface and gave a final push. “It’s out!” someone cheered. “Its first breath!” With that essential milestone passed, everyone applauded the arrival of the approximately 3-foot, 25-pound new member of the Shedd family in Chicago.

“As soon as those little tail flukes appear, your heart begins to race, and you know it’s only a matter of time before you are about to witness something incredibly amazing,” wrote Lisa Takaki, senior director of marine mammals, in a blog post for Shedd. “To watch a dolphin be born is beautiful, but to also see its natural instincts fully take over in a matter of seconds as it kicks its tail to propel its little body to the surface to take its first breath is overwhelmingly emotional.”

In comparison to Mom the dolphin calf was nearly half her length.

“We are overjoyed that both mom and calf are doing well in these critical first hours.”

This Dog’s Certified Nose is Saving Bee Colonies from Disease

Klinker screenshot NatGeo

Klinker may look like any other black Labrador retriever, but she’s the only dog in America that can do this job — sniffing out disease and saving whole colonies of bees with one visit.

Since 2008, Klinker has been sniffing out American foulbrood — a bacteria that if not caught right away, can sweep through a colony, jumping from hive to hive and destroying any larvae. It’s the most common and destructive disease facing honey bees, but it’s no match for this dog’s nose.

RELATED: Girl’s Lemonade Recipe to Saves Bees Turned Into Million Dollar Whole Foods Deal

Klinker can sniff out foulbrood in its earliest stages, allowing beekeepers to treat their hives with antibiotics to wipe out the disease before it can gain a foothold.

She works for Maryland’s Agriculture Department, running through rows of hives at a time, suddenly stopping and sitting when she catches a whiff of the bacteria.

Humans can inspect only about 50 colonies a day for the menace; Klinker can check up to 1,000 of them in the same amount of time.

Maryland began training “bee dogs” to sniff out diseases in the late 1970s. Klinker is the fourth in a long line of canines that have served as guard dogs for the state’s bee population.

Her work won Klinker recognition from Milk-Bone as one of the ten “Dogs Who Changed The World” this year.

Oh, and don’t worry about her getting stung. Klinker’s work schedule is limited to fall and winter, when bees are docile — and not so worried about a dog sticking its nose into their business.
