First Ever Glowing Sea Turtle Is Discovered In South Pacific (WATCH)

Tiny fireflies are old news – the world’s first luminescent reptile was discovered lighting up the waters in the South Pacific.

While National Geographic marine biologists were filming bioflourescent corals in the reefs of the Solomon Islands, a hawkbill sea turtle with an almost alien-like red and green glow glided by.opisthotheusis-adorabilis-sea-floor-octopus-Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute-release

Scientist Wants To Name This Adorable Octopus Species “Adorabilis”

“I’m taking pictures of corals that we already know are bioflourescent,” marine biologist David Gruber said in the National Geographic Exclusive, “and then in the middle – maybe forty minutes into the dive – out of the blue it almost looks like a green and red spaceship and it came right underneath my camera! The only animal that I can really tell you definitively has two (bioflourescent) colors is corals.”

Fireflies have a different type of glow. Bioluminescent organisms – like fireflies – use chemical reactions in their bodies to exude light, while bioflourescent beings absorb light, and radiate it back out.

7-Year-Old Discovers New Dinosaur Species, a T-Rex That Eats Plants

The phenomenon is known to exist in corals, crabs, insects, and more than 200 kinds of fishes. Biologists are still uncertain as to why the sea turtle would need the eerie glow for it’s survival. They speculated that the reptile might light up either as a defense mechanism or to reel in prey.

Scientists are only just starting to scratch the surface of bioflourescence on a cellular level, and the hawksbill sea turtle is a huge milestone on the road to illumination.

Man Serenades Wife’s Return to Airport with ‘What a Wonderful World’

austin-airport-trumpet-reunion-FBvideo

A retired musician serenaded his wife of 33 years, as she entered the baggage claim area in the Austin airport, home from a two-week trip abroad.

He played the classic Louis Armstrong tune that had become their theme song over 33 years of marriage, “What a Wonderful World.”

Ed Zamora said his wife Melody told him she hadn’t heard the song at all while overseas, despite the couple always hearing the number whenever they traveled. So Ed showed up with flowers in one hand and his trumpet in the other.Woodstock-couple-Courtesy Bobbi and Nick Ercoline

The moment was especially poignant because Melody’s father had taken ill and they would be headed straight for his bedside. The song had been her mother’s favorite until she died 15 years ago.

When his wife stepped foot on the escalator, Ed took a deep breath and serenaded her all the way down by playing the most well known bars of the verse.

China to Set Up $1Bil Peace Fund and Cancel Debt of Poor Countries

China-Xi Jinping-UN Photo:Cia Pak

In his first speech at the UN headquarters in New York, President Xi Jinping said on Monday his nation will provide $100 million in aid for the African Union in next 5 years to boost peace there by supporting the establishment of an African standby force with a capacity for crisis response.

The money for Africa will be part of a $1 billion “China-UN Peace and Development Fund” to support UN peacekeeping efforts around the world.

On the broad new UN development goals to end poverty and hunger by 2030, Mr Xi said his country’s investment would reach $12 billion over the next 15 years.smoke-stack-pollutions-Why_137-Flickrcc

He also said China would cancel debts to the world’s least developed nations, including small island nations, reports the BBC.

“Looking around the world, the peace and development remain the two major themes of the times,” the Chinese leader said at the summit in New York. “We must keep hold of the key of the development. Only development can eliminate the causes of the conflicts.”

China made huge gains in lifting its own people out of poverty, and now is pledging to help Africa– and other poor nations elsewhere–to do the same.

The United Nations General Assembly wound up its 70th annual General Debate yesterday with Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft calling it a historic event crowned by the “truly seminal commitment” to achieving ambitious new development goals by 2030.

“As we commemorate the 70th anniversary [of the founding of the UN], it was fitting and reassuring that leaders recalled and reaffirmed the spirit and the principles of the Charter and confirmed their faith in the central role of UN in international cooperation,” he declared.

After the horrible mass shooting in Roseburg, Oregon, the staff of Mercy Medical Center was busy caring for an influx of victims.

In the midst of treating or transporting ten of the wounded, a small gesture of kindness reached their midst.

TIME reports that the staff of the Lafayette General Medical Center in Louisiana had placed an order for ten pizzas to be delivered to Mercy in a show of support.

It turns out, the Lafayette hospital was inundated with victims from a theater shooting in July, and three hours after they began treating the injured, a pile of pizzas arrived courtesy of a hospital in Waco, Texas. Two months earlier the White Medical Center had to deal with a sad number of gunshot wounds after a biker fight broke out and wanted to show their solidarity with the team in Louisiana.rainbow-over-world-trade-center-Twitter-BenSturner-leverageagency

Teen Builds Bridge So Kids Can Get to School Without Crossing Polluted Stream

bridge by Eshan Balbale-Mumbai Mirror

Outside of Mumbai, India, children were dropping out of school rather than wading through a polluted stream in route to their classes every day.

The community had complained to the government about the steep, narrow valley with foul smelling water, but nothing had been done–until a 17-year-old college student volunteered to build a bridge on his own.

The Mumbai Mirror reports that Eshan Balbale used bamboo to erect the bridge that measures four-feet-wide and 100-feet across.

He completed the project in eight days, “an initiative that politicians and the corporation failed to address for years.”

The teen, who lives elsewhere and gets financial support from his parents, learned that the residents were crossing the nullah despite risks of skin infections, malaria, dengue and other diseases.

“I felt terrible when I saw the children wade through the disgusting sludge,” he told the Mirror.Golden Temple India CC Arian Zwegers

He also learned that 15,000 residents regularly crossed the rancid water to get to the shops and railway stations on the other side.

The bridge, which can carry up to 50 people at a time, and was built to last a couple years, was inaugurated on August 29 and now gives people in Sathe Nagar easy access to the commercial districts nearby.

The young Balbale had earlier set up a nonprofit group, Nirbhay Yuva Pratishthan, to encourage young people to be charitable and to do other great things in India. He also hopes to improve sanitation conditions in the area by building eight to ten toilets.

Not a Bad Parting Gift for Man Who Works 60 Years for Same Company

Hendrick Hoover Auto Mall-King-Kindred-award-submitted

When King Kindred first started working at a Birmingham car dealership in 1955, McDonald’s had just opened their first restaurant, Elvis Presley was on the radio with his first hit, and the best-selling car, a ’55 Chevy Bel Air cost a little over $2,000.

60 years later, Kindred still works for that same family of dealerships, and for his years of loyal service, was presented with the keys to his very own 2015 Chevrolet Colorado truck.

“I really think the greatest gift you can give an employer is a great employee,” said Joel Smith, Executive General Manager of Hendrick Auto Mall in Hoover, Alabama.GoFundMe-Buy-James-a-Car

Dealership Hands New Car to Detroit Man Who Walks 21 Miles a Day to Work

Now 79, years old, Kindred started out washing cars for the Don Drennen dealership at age 19, but has worn many hats throughout his career–promoted into the service department, the paint shop, and as the New Car Service Manager. The Drennen showrooms were purchased by the Hendrick Automotive Group, run by NASCAR legend Rick Hendrick, in 2011.

In a short speech at his 60th anniversary celebration party on September 23, Kindred expressed appreciation to the dealerships saying, “It will be well driven, we-e-e-e-ll driven.”Jake Nelson-familyphoto-car-lover

His boss expressed his own gratitude. “Surrounding yourself with people who commit to being better than yesterday is the gift we have received having King Kindred on our team,” said Smith.

Kindred said he loves his job because it’s been easy for him to get along with  coworkers— ut after six decades of exceptional work, Kindred has decided that it’s time to retire and plans to stay through December, according to one of his co-workers.

He says that he will miss the place he’s called a second home for so many years, but looks forward to wherever life decides to take him and his wife, who celebrated 42 years of marriage in September.

Ward Drennen, who returned to his former dealership to see his old friend and employee honored, said the automotive veteran is well-loved and “one of my favorite people.”

Margaret Atchley, Guest Services Manager at Hendrick Hoover Auto Mall, which includes Chevrolet and Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram showrooms, told Good News Network that anyone in the Hendrick automotive group is rewarded with a Rolex watch for 30 years of service. Doing Yoga On A Rooftop Cleansed My Chakras (Learn To Do It At Home)

fern rooftop yoga group submitted

Five of us gathered after dark on the rooftop of a Wall Street high-rise in New York City’s financial district.

Armed with nothing but a Bluetooth speaker and a smile, Fern Olivia instructs us all to lay down our mats. The night is slightly breezy, but warm enough to practice without discomfort.

The first poses we do are unique, centered around cleansing our chakras, the seven subtle energy points in the non-physical body, according to Indian teachings. We needed to “clear ourselves” of the energy picked up from people on the street by “shaking them off.” On one side of me is a shirtless guy wearing lots of beads, on the left is a 13-year-old girl making me feel ridiculous for not being able to land a handstand.

I lower my arms to create “an aura of grace” and build a protective white light around me and look up and see the lights symbolic of the Twin Towers shooting into the clouds.

It’s an experience of yoga that likely can’t be replicated anywhere but in New York City, but the chakra cleansing exercises are easy to do at home.

8 Ways to Love Yoga Even If You Have No Flexibility or Balance

Using a Kundalini breathing exercise, which is supposed to “rinse out” the digestive organs, you can nourish and flush your kidneys, cleanse your blood, and expand lung capacity, which will in turn support your thyroid.

“All our glandular systems work in synergy, so when we support our liver, spleen, kidneys, and lymphatic system, we support our thyroid,” Fern explains.

Set a timer for three minutes, and begin.

fern yoga teacher roof submitted1. Find a cross-legged seat (or sit upright in a chair with feet planted on the floor), close your eyes gently and gaze at the space in between your eyebrows and slightly up. This is your third eye, where your intuition is located in the energetic body. We will focus on strengthening your intuitive awareness as you acknowledge and strengthen your inner healer.

2. Lengthen your spine as you sit up tall, feeling a long line of energy from the base of your spine up and out the crown of your head.

3. Open your left arm out to the side like a wing, parallel to the earth, with the palm of your hand facing outward. Bend your elbow so your left palm faces in towards your heart. Place your right palm facing your left palm and clasp your fingers together as you create a tension on the palms almost as if you were pulling them apart.

4. As you inhale, twist your torso to the left. Every time you twist to the left, you send circulation and blood flowing to your heart.

5. As you exhale, twist your torso to the right. Every time you twist to the right, you are detoxifying your liver.

6. As you move your torso, be sure to keep your sit bones grounded and your spine tall, so the containers around your internal organs broaden and you have room to rinse and flush your glandular system.

7. Keep your palms at the height of your throat to send energy to your thyroid as you release stagnation in your lower organs with each twist.

8. Once you hear your timer for three minutes, reach your arms straight up alongside your ears with your fingertips reaching toward the sky. Invite a deep breath to fill you up on your inhalation and before you exhale, hold and retain the breath, as you squeeze your pelvic floor muscles in and up, hug your navel to your spine, and press your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Salt Yoga breathe easy submitted

9. Hold and retain this breath as long as you can, then open your mouth and exhale deeply, releasing any stagnation out of your body.. Repeat this two more times, then lower your arms and place your palms face down onto your thighs.

Keep your eyes closed and breathe deeply, noticing the effect of this breathwork on your physical and energetic state. Notice how you feel, notice what has shifted, what has been released.

Girl’s Fight for Friend in Wheelchair Gets New Swings at Four Schools

Jayci Stubblefield GoFundMe

A fourth grade girl in Texas felt really sad that one of her best friends couldn’t play with her on the swings at school. Her motorized wheelchair couldn’t roll over the gravel on the playground, and it certainly wouldn’t fit in a swing.

But Rylea Lambert has one thing going for her when it comes to playtime. Her friend, Jayci Stubblefield, decreed the situation just wasn’t fair and decided to do something about it.

dragon-wheelchair-costume-MagicWheelchair-website“I kept saying in my mind, ‘Why doesn’t every kid get to play?’” Jayci told KXAS News.

Dad Builds Halloween Costumes Around Wheelchairs as a Nonprofit

Principal Jason Beatty thought the nine-year-old had a pretty good point, so he teamed up with the girls to fix the problem.

He found out he could use money from a bond issue that voters had approved to pave the playground. Now all he needed was a way come up with the $10,000 needed for the special swing.

Dad Builds “Awesome” Giant Swing so Daughter in Wheelchair Can Play

Deeming little Jayce the perfect spokesperson for their cause, he asked her to plead Rylea’s case before the Aledo ISD Education Foundation, in Weatherford, Texas. The little girls brought grown men to tears, and the foundation decided all four elementary schools in their district needed the special swings.

The school and foundation must raise the money through private donations, and are a quarter of the way there.

Jayci has set up a GoFundMe page, and is selling bracelets and t-shirts, emblazoned with, “Every Kid Deserves a Chance to Play.” She hopes to raise all the money needed for the four swings before the girls move on together to their next school.

Pull Up a Bar Stool on This Mobile Bus and Get Financial Advice

What better place to educate people about finance than on a school bus?

When Marsha Barnes set her mind to becoming an independent financial coach, she decided to buy a $3,500 bus on Craigslist and use it as a mobile classroom that offers clients a “menu” of money management techniques.

She hired a designer, set up shop, and hit the pavement to bring seminars on credit score boosting, debt management, and budgeting, to the people of Charlotte, North Carolina.

The name “bar” was derived from the fact that her clients sit on mini-barstools during their consultations.

Despite the setting, people can’t just hop on board The Finance Bar — individuals pay $10 a month for membership and visit the bus wherever it is parked that day. Essentially, the bus sets its hours, like any other office, except it changes locations.

“If I’m at the gas station there have been moments when I’ll get a request to look inside or for someone’s kids to get a picture inside. I love those moments, it makes me feel connected to the community,” she told Good News Network.

This Moving Company Helps Women Leave Abusive Homes At No Cost

Groups and organizations can also request her presence–at meetings or conferences.

Ultimately, her hope is that The Finance Bar can change how people perceive and approach the topic of money and personal finance.

“We have to realize that if people could change their situation many would,” Barnes said. “You also have a percentage of people who have experienced life altering situations that were unavoidable like disabilities, deaths, unemployment, layoffs, and the list goes on.”

With a background in nonprofit management and banking, Barnes had been teaching personal finance in the four years leading up to the launch of the Finance Bar on November 10, 2014.

To date, the business, which has just been approved as an official nonprofit, has 300 virtual members, and Barnes has worked with 4,500 people on the bus. The status will allow her to apply for grants and be able to raise funds to serve more people.

It’s easy to verbalize what we would like to see happen with our money, she continued, but acting on it is a whole other story.

“Generally, the topic of finance can be scary, especially in those moments when we feel less than confident about our situation,” she said. “The Finance Bar has a zero judgment policy. My mission is to continuously help those that have challenges understand how to make their money work for them and offer tips they can use to remain committed to the process.”

Mealworms Love Eating Styrofoam! Breakthrough Discovery Best In 10 Years

foam containers CC solo estonia

Who would have thought that the container used to transport your take-out food could be a meal itself?

For the right consumer, it is.

Mealworms, scientists have learned, will indeed eat styrofoam, which could spell glorious progress in the fight to eliminate plastic waste.

Researchers at Beihang University in China and Stanford University in California arrived at this conclusion after putting the worms—larvae of the common American beetle—on a diet of nothing but styrofoam. Not only dud the bugs digest the plastic into biodegradable compounds, but they were just as healthy afterwards as worms that ate their normal diet.

Teen’s Device to Clear Plastic Garbage from Oceans is Almost Ready

The secret is the microorganisms in the worms’ digestive system. These “bugs-within-the-bugs” produce an enzyme that breaks down the foam into organic compounds. What the mealworms don’t digest, they expel as biodegradable substances that return to nature.

“The findings are revolutionary,” Stanford University engineer Wei-Min Wu, told CNN. “This is one of the biggest breakthroughs in environmental science in the past ten years.”

The Robotic Baby Penguin That Spies For Scientists

On the heels of this awesome revelation, scientists will pursue a theory that these enzymes could potentially also be used to break down other forms of plastic, like microbeads polluting the world’s oceans.

“Sometimes, science surprises us,” Stanford professor of environmental engineering, and co-author of the study, Craig Criddle said. “This is a shock.”

The study was published in the journal Environmental Technology.

Twister, Battleship, Jenga and Super Soaker Vie for the Toy Hall of Fame

Toy Hall of Fame Inductees

Woody and Buzz Lightyear still haven’t made the cut, even though some of their “Toy Story” supporting actors, like Mr. Potato Head and Barbie, have.

This year’s 12 nominees for the Toy Hall of Fame include American Girl Dolls, games like Jenga and Twister, and generic toys like the scooter and coloring book. They are vying for the two annual openings in The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York.

A total of 56 toys have made it into the Hall of Fame, so far. Last year’s inductees, Rubik’s Cube and soap bubbles, joined classic toys like Etch A Sketch, Easy-Bake Oven, and Play-Doh.

Do you have a favorite toy from your childhood? Whether it’s Barrel of Monkeys or Creepy Crawlers, anyone can nominate a toy for induction into the museum, but winners must meet certain standards. It has to have survived multiple generations, be widely recognized, and foster creativity and learning through play.

While the nominees are all fun and games, the judges are pretty serious people – inventors, psychologists, and educators. But not too serious to disqualify the “Stick” from being inducted in 2008.

Shaving with Lasers Instead of Blades Will Save Money and the Environment

Laser Razor kickstarter

Taking a laser to your face and other body parts may seem crazy, but inventors of the “Laser Razor” say it’s the best shave that’s ever grazed humankind.

This innovative device actually uses light instead of metal blades to slice through whiskers and hair, literally melting the hair’s follicles.

Morgan Gustavsson and Paul Binun, inventors of the Skarp, made a breakthrough when they discovered the chromophore, a particle in the hair that absorbs certain wavelengths of light. It is common in every person—regardless of age, sex, or race—allowing the laser razor to work on everyone, even those with light hair, which older laser hair removal treatments missed.beautiful shoes without the pain-graphic-JulieLopezShoes-FB

Comfortable High Heels For Women Designed by Orthopedic Nurse

Both men and women can use this razor without water, shaving cream, blades, or electricity— that’s a big win for the environment, since shaving requires so many of these resources. Gallons of water are used for shaving in any household and two billion razor blades wind up in landfills in the U.S. and Canada every year.

Another benefit: No more blood trickling down legs and chins..

The Skarp Laser Razors (Swedish for ‘sharp’) are estimated to have a whopping 50,000 hour life expectancy, far surpassing the standard razor blade. The device will provide a month of shaves with a single AAA battery—using rechargeable batteries will keep your environmental shave-print to a minimum.

This Lamp Light Burns All Night Powered Only by a Glass of Saltwater

Considering that men spend $7,000 on cartridges and razors during their lifetimes and women about $4,500, the $159 price tag for nearly 6 years of shaving sounds like a bargain.

The Kickstarter campaign to get the Skarp Laser Razor into consumers’ hands by March 2016 initially asked for $160,000 to launch the project. To date, they have raised close to $3 million, with 16 days still to go in their campaign.

UPDATE: Kickstarter has removed the Laser Razor project from its website, and it is now on Indiegogo. Kickstarter requires a working prototype, and Skarp has not built their finished prototype yet. They have, however, created a working razor they are calling a “demo” model. They say they are producing the factory-made model updated with fiber optics and expect to have a working prototype in February. On Indiegogo right now, they have raised $415,000 — 255% of their goal.

New Test Can Diagnose Every Virus At Once, Even When Doctors Are Stumped

NIH, public domain

virus-public domain NIH

A new test can identify virtually any virus that affects humans and animals and will allow doctors to quickly diagnose diseases they weren’t even looking for.

The test, called ViroCap, can identify the culprit easily because it sequences DNA and RNA from 34 different families of organisms representing tens of thousands of viruses.

Scientists Find Way to Turn Cancer Back Into Healthy Tissue in Lab

Even if two viruses are genetically similar, the test can distinguish between them.

Initial testing of Virocap shows it was 52% more accurate at detecting viruses than the current Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test doctors rely on.

“With this test, you don’t have to know what you’re looking for,” Dr. Gregory Storch, lead author of the study, said. “It casts a broad net and can efficiently detect viruses that are present at very low levels.”

Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri developed the ViroCap and began testing it by setting up two panels of patients and comparing results from the two diagnostic methods.

Blood Cells “Retrained” to Destroy Cancer, Lead Again to Full Remission

In the first panel, the PCR test identified viruses in 10 of 14 patients, but ViroCap found the viruses in the other four. All were viruses that are commonly missed by the current test, such as those that cause seasonal flu, chickenpox, and cold sores.

In the second panel, the scientists compared the two tests on eight children. The current PCR test identified 11 viruses, but ViroCap discovered seven more viruses.

The research was funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the results were published in the September edition of the online journal Genome Research.

New Vaccine Virtually Scratches Shingles Off Your List of Worries

The kit won’t be clinically available until the scientists conduct more research on its accuracy, but, until then, they are giving away the technology to other researchers so they can start using it to study viruses in the laboratory.

What’s especially interesting about Aidan is the time when he was a boy, and his mother was unsure he’d ever talk at all. She’d even begun to teach him sign language.

Diagnosed with ADHD and high-functioning Autism earlier this year, the eighth grade student has had to overcome a number of obstacles but his gift of gab now comes naturally–and he is using it for good.

“He loves meeting new people and having conversations, learning about people’s lives,” his mom, Tanya Hundeby, told KARE News.

As soon as he was old enough to volunteer—the day after his 13th birthday—Aidan began escorting residents at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center to the canteen, to therapy, to the chapel, logging over 160 volunteer hours in just the past two months.

Navy Veteran Jay LaCrosse made friends with Aidan during his 16-day rehab stay for a broken hip.

“He’s very special to me,” Jay said. So special, in fact, that the vet wrote a letter to President Obama seeking recognition for the young volunteer, who specifically walked slower down the halls so the two would have more time to talk.

With school back in session, the 8th grader says he hopes to continue volunteering during school breaks, and definitely plans to return next summer.

Doctor Builds Makeshift Device To Save Baby’s Life on Airline Flight

Flying at 35,000 feet over the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, a doctor cobbled together a makeshift medical tool — partly from trash — to save a baby’s life.

Four hours into the seven-and-a-half hour flight from Spain to the U.S., a two-year-old had an asthma attack, but her medicine was in the family’s checked luggage.

Dr. Khurshid Guru answered a flight attendant’s call for a doctor and quickly assessed the situation.

He realized girl needed a pediatric nebulizer, a device that delivers a measured dose of medicine to the lungs through a sustained mist. There was only an adult version onboard, but the dose was too strong for the infant. Dr. Guru decided he’d have to make the tool they needed.

He grabbed an empty plastic water bottle from the trash, a plastic cup from the drink cart, an emergency oxygen bottle from the plane, and finally, the adult nebulizer.

Cutting, taping, and working quickly, he put all the parts together to create a makeshift device that allowed him to control the dose and got the baby breathing again.

“Thank God the kid did well!” Dr. Guru tweeted along with a picture of his contraption after they landed.

Dr. Guru doesn’t have much experience with pediatrics, but he is director of the Roswell Park, New York, Cancer Institute’s robotic surgery department and is familiar with making technology do its job to save lives.

He may have been the best doctor anyone could have hoped for on that flight.

Dozens of Neighbors Harvest Fields for Farmer with Cancer

Neighbors Harvest Crops Screen Shot KWCQ

Anyone looking at Carl Bates’ fields would think he raises corn, but it turns out he’s also growing a bumper crop of friends.

The farmer, who lives in Galva, Illinois, had 450 acres of grain ready to harvest this year, but couldn’t work the fields because of his cancer treatments.

According to his family, Carl is not one to ask for help. Fortunately, his neighbors are quick to offer it.

Farmers and local businesses donated ten combine harvesters and 16 semi-trucks, which the volunteers used to harvest all 450 acres in a matter of hours.

“It got to be to the point that so many people were showing up, that they actually had to tell people that we have enough, but you want to stay around that’s fine, but we’ve got plenty out in the field there’s no more room,” Carl’s cousin Jason Bates told KWQC news.
