First New Harry Potter Book In 9 Years Is Amazon’s Most Preordered Book

You didn’t have to attend Hogwarts’ Divination class to see this coming — the script for the new Harry Potter play is the most pre-ordered book of the year.

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is set to be released on July 31, which Harry’s 36th birthday, and author J.K. Rowling’s 51st.

Unlike the earlier novels, this book is the actual script for a hit play of the same name, which has drawn sold-out crowds in London’s West End.

The play is set 19 years after the events in the last book, and follows the adventures of Harry and his friends as adults, with their own children taking center stage at the Hogwarts wizarding school.

The new book topping both the print and Kindle lists at Amazon, with other book sellers across the U.S. and UK reporting record preorders, as well. No one’s added up the sales so far, but the last Harry Potter book, “The Deathly Hallows” part two, released in 2007, sold 11 million copies in the first 24 hours after its release.

This won’t be the last word on Harry. The play is being continuously tweaked and refined, effectively being rewritten on a nightly basis after each performance to perfect the story. Rowling expects to release a revised edition of the script with its new content in book form next year.

The British Royal Family has released photos of their future king to celebrate his third birthday today.

Prince George is featured on a swing, playing with a puppy, and wandering around the yard at his parents’ home in Norfolk. The photos were posted on The Royal Family Facebook page on his birthday, July 22.

A statement from Kensington Palace said the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — Prince George’s parents Prince William and Duchess Kate — hope that people would enjoy seeing the photos of their son.

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to take these photographs of Prince George,” photographer Matt Porteous said. “It was a very relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. I’m honored that they have decided to share these images with the public to mark his third birthday.”

Let the Sunshine In: New Sunscreen Compound Protects Cells From UVA Damage

A new sunscreen additive could prevent cancer on an unprecedented scale by gripping and protecting skin cells like an “iron claw.”

Cell damage from sunlight is due to ultraviolet (UV) radiation that comes in two forms: UVA and UVB. Most sunscreens protect very effectively from UVB light, but few work well against UVA light.

Researchers in the UK have discovered a compound they’re calling ‘mito-iron claw’ that provides never before seen levels of protection against UVA radiation.

Their discovery provides protection from inside the cells where the most damage occurs, but without harming those cells. Researchers who developed it at the University of Bath and at Kings College London believe their mitoiron claw can be added to regular sunscreen formulas within three or four years.

Their discovery gets its name because of the way it works — attaching itself to free iron in cells like a claw.

Iron works like a battery in cells, powering multiple vital functions. But when that iron is exposed to UVA, it turns into a catalyst for producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) — which damages DNA and other cell components, increasing the risk of cancer.

The mitoiron claw’s grip prevents that from happening, protecting the iron in the cell from reacting with UVA light.

The UK researchers exposed human skin cells in their lab to the equivalent of 140 minutes of sunlight at sea level. Cells treated with the mitoiron claw showed no signs of damage, while untreated cells showed significant cell death.

“The role of iron-mediated damage induced upon exposure of skin cells to UVA has been underestimated for many years,” Dr. Charareh Pourzand, one of the University of Bath researchers said. “This mitoiron claw is a highly effective compound, offering unprecedented protection against UVA-induced mitochondrial damage.”

It’s hard to keep from getting choked up while listening to Lady Gaga serenade a foster child with her blockbuster anthem of independence.

While visiting Casa Hogar, a nonprofit foster kid’s home in Mexico, a child named Christian asked the pop star if she could sing him a song. Without missing a beat, Gaga looked him in the eyes and started belting out a jaw dropping a capella version of her hit single “Born This Way”.

For “Throwback Thursday,” we thought we’d highlight some anti-ISIS activities in the Muslim community that you may have missed in the news during the last year.

Roughly 1.5 million Muslims signed petitions condemning ISIS after 70,000 Muslim clerics declared that the terrorist group is not an Islamic organization.

The India-based clerics also condemned the Taliban and al-Qaeda as non-Islamic. Their fatwa against the groups called the terrorists a threat to humanity.

Across India, people of all religions joined Muslims in prayer services asking for peace and an end to the violence against Muslims, Christians and innocent bystanders.

In December, Shia Muslims in the London turned their annual UK Arbaeen Procession into a demonstration against ISIS and other terrorists. It is traditionally a rite of mourning for the death of social justice leader Imam Husain’s death in the seventh century.

Marchers held up signs declaring “Not in my name” and “Terrorism has NO religion.”

“The Muslim community is a very diverse community, with the vast majority of us horrified by Isis,” march organizer Waqar Haider told the Independent.

Similarly, in New York City, on New Year’s Eve in Times Square, Muslims rang in the new year by taking a stand against extremism.

Dancing Cop Builds Friendships at Black Lives Matter Cookout (WATCH)

A police officer caught on camera dancing with local supporters of Black Lives Matter has earned the nickname “Officer Brown With The Get-Down”—and he is building bridges with the community one move at a time.

A planned protest march turned into a community barbecue Sunday in Wichita, Kansas as protesters and cops joined together to organize the cookout—where they could begin a discussion between citizens and police, and have some fun.

As the music was cranked up, you can see Officer Aron Moses throwing “his hands in the air like he just don’t care” and joining the crowd in dancing the Cha-Cha Slide. His dance moves have been seen by more than 16 million people.

Things weren’t going too swimmingly for ‘Purps’ the penguin after an injury to one of her ankle tendons left her with a heavy limp.

Thankfully, a team of tech-savvy kids from Connecticut’s Mystic Middle School crafted the perfect solution.

Using a newly-funded 3D-printer, the middle schoolers designed an orthotic boot for the 23-year-old African penguin, which now allows her to waddle freely without being weighed down by a cast.

Southwest Employee Becomes Girl’s Buddy During In-Flight Panic Attacks

When a little girl with diabetes had a panic attack aboard a plane, sending her blood sugar level plummeting, a flight attendant took her by the arm and saved the day.

Nine-year-old Gabby Swart has Type 1 diabetes and severe anxiety over flying. Panic can cause her blood sugar to crash suddenly, with dangerous health consequences.

Flying with her mother and two younger siblings, who also needed attention, the plane flew through rough weather and turbulence.

Southwest Airlines flight attendant Jovan “Garrick” Riley noticed the little girl getting nervous early in the flight and offered to help her mother keep her calm. He’d talk to her, bring her special drinks, and as the plane started descending through turbulence, sat with her for 30 minutes, helping keep her calm.

When the plane from Florida landed in New Jersey, he announced over the intercom that his new friend in the front row, Gabby, had overcame her fears of flying—and the passengers, who’d been watching the scene unfold, gave her a rousing round of applause.

Gabby’s mom, Erika, posted a picture of the little girl and the flight attendant to Southwest’s Facebook page telling their story.

“We are forever grateful to have met such a beautiful, selfless soul,” she wrote about Garrick’s care for her daughter.

When a Pennsylvania couple got married, they recruited two of the cutest flower girls ever — their grandmothers.

Josh and Maggie Wakefield say their grandparents played big roles in their upbringing and wanted them to play an important part in their big day.

So, at the start of the wedding ceremony, 75-year-old Joyce Benedict, the bride’s grandmother, and 74-year-old Drue Fitzgerald, the groom’s, spread rose petals down the aisle.

500 Elephants Moved in Massive Relocation To A Safer Home

A man-made migration, the largest elephant relocation ever attempted anywhere in Africa, is moving 500 animals from a cramped park in Malawi.

The move, to a more spacious preserve where they’ll have more room to roam, will also protect the behemoths from human encroachment upon their herds.

Their current home, the Liwonde National Park, is described by its director as an “island in a sea of humanity.”

With such a rising tide of humanity all around it, the Johannesburg, South Africa based nonprofit, African Parks, which runs Liwonde decided the elephants would be safer at a new sanctuary 185 miles away.

Wildlife handlers are tranquilizing the elephants and using cranes to load them onto trucks for the journey. They’ve moved as many as 24 in a single day.

Bas Huijbregts, African species expert for the World Wildlife Fund told the Associated Press the move is “a win-win for elephants and people.”

The elephants are closely monitored while they’re moved and placed in special “wake-up crates” so they don’t hurt themselves or others when they come to in their new homes.

Guy Sells Ice Cream for $1… or Gives it Free if Kids Answer History or Math Question

The real treat this ice cream man peddles is teaching others to pay it forward.

The “Creamcycle Dude,” James Karagiannis, sells frozen treats for a dollar from his pedal-powered cart in under-served neighborhoods of Buffalo, New York.

He felt bad whenever kids couldn’t afford the cost, so he started giving away the treats for free if they could answer a history or math question — and giving them hints to help. As people found out about the Dude’s generosity, they began sending money to pay for the treats he gives away.

So far, more than $6,000 have been donated, but he’s also an additional lesson to the curriculum for his little customers — he’s asking them to write “thank you” letters to the donors whenever they take a frozen treat.

Karagiannis has been so surprised by all the attention and donations, he hasn’t been checking the total that’s come in.

“I’m terrified to look,” Karagiannis told the Buffalo News. “That’s a lot of ice cream to give out.”

These “Bad” Habits May Have Surprising Health Benefits for Kids

It turns out some habits parents try to break in their kids are actually good for their health.

A new study published in the journal Pediatrics shows children who bite their nails and suck their thumbs are about one-third less likely to develop certain allergies.

“Early exposure to dirt is not a bad thing,” said study author Malcolm Sears, a researcher for the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health at McMaster University School of Medicine, in Ontario, Canada. “Cat, grass, house dust mite, and dog allergies were reduced, some significantly.”

The findings may be another example of what’s called the hygiene hypothesis, which asserts that hyper cleanliness in families and avoiding exposure to the microbes in the environment may increase a child’s risk of allergies.

“When they suck their thumbs or bite their nails they’re exposing themselves to additional microbes or dirt which is stimulating the immune system,” Sears told CBS News.

Celebrity Chefs To Use Olympic Leftovers To Feed The Hungry

Kitchens at the Rio Olympics will serve up 60,000 meals for athletes during the games, and celebrity chefs have cooked up a winning plan to deal with leftovers — using them to feed Rio’s poor.

Chefs David Hertz and Massimo Bottura are leading an effort to collect an estimated 12 tons of food leftovers from the Olympic Village and distribute it to the city’s favelas, or slums. The food will provide about 100 fully prepared meals each day during the games.

An empty storefront has already been turned into a feeding station where volunteers will cook the unused food from the Olympic Village, giving people who might otherwise go hungry a hot meal. After the games, it’ll be converted into a community center featuring cooking classes and other food-related projects.

Nearly 35% of produce is regularly wasted in Brazil, so the São Paulo city council is considering a bill that would require business to donate unused or unsold food to charity—and the UN is working to set up a network of NGOs and universities to minimize food waste in the region.

The soup kitchen is a joint effort by Rio’s city government, the IOC’s sustainable food initiative, Hertz’s Gastromotiva organization, and Bottura’s Food for Soul non-profit. The chefs want to use the games to begin a local effort to combat hunger in the community.

“We need to empower people on the ground,” Hertz said in a statement. “They can make the change happen.”

SuperMeat Promises Real Meat With No Harm To Any Animals

A group of researchers are crowdfunding a project to grow real chicken meat in a lab — instead of on a farm.

Israeli-based “SuperMeat” say their product would help remove animals from the menu without changing eating habits for people who enjoy a taste of meat. Their goal is a to offer meaty protein that is equally eco-friendly, cruelty free, and able to address world hunger.

Lab-cultured meat that the company has proposed for market, takes cell samples from an animal without harming it. Scientists then grow and duplicate the cells in a “nutrient soup,” which allows the tissue to grow into actual meat inside an environment that replicates the animal growth process.

Researchers at “SuperMeat” believe it will cost $2.5 million to create their first prototype ready for tasting. They’re not sure how long that will take, but they’ve set up an Indiegogo page to bankroll a shorter-term phase of the project—and are nearly 90 percent to the goal of $100,000.

In the end, the award-winning scientists claim, cultured meat will be cheaper than raising animals and much easier on the environment — since it produces no animal waste and requires far fewer resources.

‘Thin Blue Lines’ Go Big — Blue Stripes Of Support For Police Catching On

A Washington state man came up with a simple way he and his neighbors could show support for police officers — and he never realized it would spread across the country — and an ocean.

Andy Audette found a roll of blue tape in his garage and turned a strip of it into a “thin blue line” across the back windshield of his truck. He shared the idea on a community Facebook page in Maple Valley, thinking some of his neighbors might join in.

Since then, the simple gesture, based on a 1960s documentary film, “Thin Blue Line” about the struggles officers face every day, is gaining a worldwide following.

Children’s Hospital Uses ‘Pokemon GO’ to Get Patients Excited and Out of Bed (WATCH)

A hospital is using the new Pokemon GO craze to get child patients out of bed and into the hallways for some fun time and physical activity.

“It’s kind of a sneaky way to get kids to exercise,” said J.J. Bouchard, who is employed in the pediatric wing of the Michigan hospital. “It’s getting people to look up from their phones and interact with one another.”

The brand new app is a game that accesses a smartphone’s GPS and camera to allow players to explore their surroundings in search of more than 100 Pokemon creatures. Bouchard said there are several ‘Pokespots’ at the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, where patients can gather to find the cute monsters day and night.

There’s even a Pokemon “gym”, a spot in the building where Pokemons on different levels and phones can battle each other.

Young patients in the hallways—along with their siblings and parents, because this craze is so popular that whole families are regularly playing now—will stop and chat about the game, instead of keeping silent or solemnly to themselves.

California Breaks Solar Record, Generates Enough Electricity for 6 Million Homes

The San Francisco Chronicle calculated that California’s solar power plants on Tuesday generated enough electricity for more than 6 million homes.

On July 12, several large solar plants in the Golden State briefly produced a record 8,030 megawatts of electricity, according to the California Independent System Operator (ISO), the organization that runs most of the state’s power grid.

That is nearly twice the amount of solar energy produced two years ago — and that is only counting the electricity produced at plants. Thousands of rooftop solar panels around the state have the capacity to produce an additional 50 percent of that record amount.

“There is just over 4,211 megawatts of rooftop solar in California,” Steven Greenly of California ISO told Good News Network. “I can tell you we had a great solar day.”

This solar production record demonstrates that the state is making significant strides toward meeting the state’s goal of reaching 33 percent renewables by 2020.

Solar and wind combined with other renewables, like wind, geothermal and hydro-electricity, provided nearly 29 percent of the electricity needs at Tuesday’s system peak, which occurred at 5:54 p.m. For short periods of time on two days in May, renewables were serving 54 percent and 56 percent of total electricity demand.

Mystery Philanthropist Hides $100 Bills All Over City

An anonymous philanthropist has left more than $55,000 hidden around Salem, Oregon, surprising anyone who find his $100 dollar bills hidden in everything from candy bars to baby wipes.

His random acts of monetary kindness has triggered a wave of people paying it forward for others with their lucky finds.

He’s been nicknamed “Benny,” after Benjamin Franklin, who appears on the bills he’s left for strangers to find since, at least, 2013.

People have found the gifts of cash in pockets of clothing, a pink piggy bank purchased for a chile, and pots sold at an art show.

Tammy Tompkins found a “Benny” bill in a package of cereal she purchased for baking Christmas treats in 2013. Her husband was sick and medical bills were piling up.

“It just made my day,” she told the Statesman Journal. “I cried happy tears for about an hour and a half.”

Capi Lynn, the newspaper columnist who gave the anonymous “Benny” his name, has been tracking his gifts for years. She says about half the people who find his money pay it forward, mostly to food banks, animal rescue groups, and schools.

Construction Worker Hides Where’s Waldo on Job Site for Kids in Hospital Windows

This construction worker has turned a hospital expansion project into a larger than life game of “Where’s Waldo” to entertain patients at a children’s hospital.

Labor foreman Jason Haney got the idea after hearing about kids at the South Bend, Indiana hospital becoming excited by a snowman erected by workers in the construction yard last winter. This new project would keep them smiling for a long time.

Haney created an eight-foot-tall plywood cutout of Waldo (also known as Wally, in Canada and the UK) featured in the popular picture and puzzle books. Workers hide him in different places around the construction site—and move him whenever they’re notified that a child spotted the location.

Haney has a special connection to the kids at Memorial Children’s Hospital. His own daughter suffered a stroke when she was only three-years-old and needed special care.

Doctors told Haney she might not be able to learn past third grade, but 14 years later she’s graduated high school and plans to study biology and zoology at college.
