Obama Quietly Signs Ban on Products Made by Children and Slaves

Obamas - CC Glyn Lowe Photoworks

President Barack Obama signed a trade bill that went into effect in March which finally banned the importation of products and goods marketed on the backs of slaves.

The prohibition was a tiny part of the massive Congressional bill called The Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015, which effectively severs the supply of seafood caught by Thai slave workers, gold mined by children, and clothing sewn by abused Bangladeshi woman.

Awareness of slave worker exploitation was brought to light in a report by the Associated Press last year, and since then, more than 2,000 Thai workers have been rescued by officials.

The amendment closes an 85-year-old tariff law loophole that allowed importation of these goods if there was an American demand that could not be filled by other supply lines.

“It’s embarrassing that for 85 years, the United States let products made with forced labor into this country, and closing this loophole gives the U.S. an important tool to fight global slavery,” Senator Sherrod Brown, who initially proposed the amendment, told the Associated Press.

judge Merrick Garland family photo-White House video

President Barack Obama announced his nomination of Chief Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court.

“Judge Garland has earned bipartisan praise as one of the best appellate judges in the country – a brilliant, meticulous jurist with a reputation for building consensus,” said Obama in his introduction.

“He has dedicated his life to public service, choosing to serve our country and take on some of the most difficult and significant anti-terrorism cases in America’s history including prosecuting Timothy McVeigh in the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing.

“Beyond the courtroom, Judge Garland is a committed mentor and dedicated family man, advising hundreds of law clerks and tutoring elementary school kids in reading and math,” he added.

The White House shared a video in which Garland introduces himself and his family and speaks about his life and accomplishments.

“The rule of law is what distinguishes our country from many other countries,” Garland says. “And, people’s willingness to trust…that the law will treat them fairly.”

“Take a few minutes to watch this video and meet him for yourself,” wrote Obama for Facebook, where the video was posted. “I’m confident you will share my belief that Chief Judge Merrick Garland is not only eminently qualified to be a Supreme Court Justice, but that he deserves a fair hearing and an up-or-down vote in the Senate. I have fulfilled my Constitutional duty. Now it’s time for the Senate to do theirs.”

Italy is Changing Laws to Push Stores to Give Away Unsold Food

Italian Produce Market CC Harvey Barrison

Italy is set to become the second European country to press supermarkets and other businesses to donate wasted food to groups that feed the hungry.

The country already recovers more than 600 million tons of unused food every year, but Italians still throw away $13 billion worth of food annually — largely produce that has begun to age, but is still edible.

The new laws won’t punish businesses for tossing out waste food, but instead offer incentives for donating. Grocery stores, bars, and restaurants that sign up would be given lower garbage collection fees in exchange for contributing to food pantries.

France passed a law last year fining supermarkets for throwing away leftover food. The French activists who pushed for that law want a similar one for all nations in the European Union.

In the meantime, private efforts are stepping up with UK supermarket chain Tesco announcing just last week it will donate unused food from it’s 800 stores to any charity who wants it.

Companies are Giving Workers Time Off to Grieve the Loss of a Pet

Erica Lee son and Chief screenshot WFOR

When Erica Lee’s dog, “the best dog ever,” passed away, his death left a huge hole in the family.

What Erica needed most was some time off to help her little boy work through the grief of losing his best friend.

Luckily, her employer, pet insurer Trupanion, is one of a number of companies who now empathize enough to offer a bereavement day to those who lose beloved pets.

Many employers will quietly allow people to take vacation time or a personal day for such an occasion, but some actually make it a part of company policy.

Kimpton Hotels, the largest chain of boutique hotels in the U.S. is one of those companies. Founder Bill Kimpton is an animal lover who was known for bringing Chianti, his pet border collie, to work with him every day starting in 1981. His company has supported “the special relationship humans have with their pets” and allowed managers to grant up to three days of paid bereavement leave for the loss of an animal companion.

Along with Trupanion, software company VM Ware, insurance company Maxwell Health, and candy and pet food maker Mars, Inc. also have policies that allow varying amounts of time away from work after a loss.

A 2009 study, published in the journal Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic, found nearly a third of all people who lose a pet feel sadness and grief for six months or more. Some experience the effects of post traumatic stress.

The Humane Society of the United States offers a guide on its website for dealing with the loss of a pet and local animal welfare groups can provide help.

A spokeswoman for Seattle-based Trupanion says it’s important for people to have closure after losing an animal that’s been part of their family.

That time off let Erica help her son deal with the death of Chief.

“Being able to stay home with him and grieve with him was invaluable. It was so, so important to me.” Erica told WFOR News. “This should absolutely be the norm.”

On Nebraska’s high plains, in the middle of a bitter Midwestern winter, you can still pick oranges, lemons and grapefruit–because the citrus grows in a geothermal greenhouse.

The remarkable fact is, although he needed $22,000 to set it up, it costs virtually nothing to keep heated throughout the winter–because the warmth comes from under ground.

It’s creator, the fascinating Russ Finch, says it is rare to see any successful year-round greenhouses in that part of the country because energy costs are just too high. His building design costs only one dollar a day to operate.

A series of pipes take freezing winter air from outside to eight feet underground, where the earth — at a constant 52-degrees — warms it. Sunlight through the greenhouse’s wall and roof panels heats the air even more, so there is no need for electric or gas heaters.

On the verge of tears, she reached out to her role model, the plus-size model Laura Lee. When Dee remarked that she probably should make a t-shirt to show the bullies hadn’t gotten to her, Laura cheered the idea as a way to turn the experience into something good.

Dee set up an online page selling custom t-shirts exclaiming “Dee the Fat Whale Saves the Whales”, along with a GoFundMe page to raise money for the California-based Save the Whales.

A skittish mother dog’s entire demeanor changed when a shelter worker stepped into her cage bringing the one thing that could never be replaced: her four lost puppies.

Cora the canine was surrendered by her owners to the Marin Humane Society on Saturday. A routine veterinary examination of Cora showed that she had recently birthed puppies and since it isn’t healthy for newborn puppies of that age to be separated from their mother, a follow-up call to the previous owners convinced them to relinquish the puppies back to the shelter.

Cora had been a nervous wreck at the shelter, but when a worker stepped into her space and presented a golden pup from inside a carrier–and then another, and another, and another–her tail started wagging and never stopped.

With all the babies accounted for, the mama pup can’t wait to nurse her brood.

Blueberries May Fend Off Alzheimer’s: It’s All About The Anthocyanins

blueberries-cc-Maira Gall

The blueberry, already known to be a ‘super fruit’ for its power to potentially lower the risk of heart disease and cancer, also could be insurance for your brain against Alzheimer’s disease. New research presented by scientists Sunday bolsters the idea that this fruit, loaded with healthful antioxidants, could help prevent the devastating effects of this common form of dementia.

“Our new findings corroborate those of previous animal studies and preliminary human studies, adding further support to the notion that blueberries can have a real benefit in improving memory and cognitive function in some older adults,” says Robert Krikorian, Ph.D., leader of the research team.

He said that blueberries’ beneficial effects could be due to flavonoids called anthocyanins, which have been shown to improve animals’ cognition.

Krikorian and colleagues at the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center conducted two human studies to follow up on earlier clinical trials.

One study involved 47 adults aged 68 and older, who had mild cognitive impairment, a risk condition for Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers gave them either freeze-dried blueberry powder, which is equivalent to a cup of berries, or a placebo powder once a day for 16 weeks.

“There was improvement in cognitive performance and brain function in those who had the blueberry powder compared with those who took the placebo,” Krikorian says. “The blueberry group demonstrated improved memory and improved access to words and concepts.” The team also conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging, which showed increased brain activity in those who ingested the blueberry powder.

CHECK OUT: Diet May Cut Risk of Alzheimer’s by 50% (Long-term Study of 900 Seniors)

The second study included 94 people aged 62 to 80 who had less severe issues. The results were not as robust as with the first study and Krikorian believes the two studies indicate that blueberries may be more effective in treating patients with cognitive impairments, but may not show equal measurable benefit for those with minor memory issues or who have not yet developed cognitive problems.

The researchers, whose funding came from the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council, the National Institute on Aging and Wild Blueberries of North America, presented their work at the 251st annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society, on March 13.

Currently 5.3 million people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

The team plans to conduct a blueberry study with a younger group of people, aged 50 to 65. The group would include people at risk of developing Alzheimer’s, such as those who are obese, have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. This work could help the researchers determine if blueberries could help prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s symptoms.

Shelter Dog Saves Puppy’s Life–And Both Get Adopted in Show of Thanks

dog -Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services

There are many heroes in animal rescue and sometimes that hero can be another dog – saving himself while saving another.

A black lab puppy named Gunther came into the Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services in bad shape. He was anemic from flea infestation and extremely weak. Shelter workers feared he wouldn’t make it.

He was in desperate need of a blood transfusion and fortunately, another young dog, a one-year-old Catahoula mix named Hula, was able to donate blood to help the pup.

LOOK: Strangers Rally for Dog Rescue at 14,000 Feet

Soon after, Hula was adopted by Cassi James and her 7-year-old daughter, Jaedyn. It was clear from the start that Hula was perfect for their family. “She is such a good dog, so tame,” James told the Saint Augustine Record.. “And she’s so good with Jaedyn.”

Two days later, James and her family were surprised to be contacted by a local Florida TV station. The station was doing a story on blood donor dogs and wanted to include Hulu’s story. That’s how James learned that their new dog was also a hero and that she’d saved the life of another puppy by giving her blood.

James agreed and brought Hula to the station for the interview. Gunther, the puppy she saved, was also there. The two dogs knew each other immediately. “Gunther went right to Hula,” James said. “It seemed like she felt a connection,” she added.

After realizing the special connection the two dogs shared, and seeing how well they got along, Cassie knew they had to adopt Gunther as well. So that’s what she and her family did.

Gunther, now eight weeks old, has recovered and is doing well, especially now with Hulu by his side. “They’ve completed our family,” said James (see the picture, here). “They are the best dogs.”

The three embark on a journey meant to end with Mustafa’s return home – but first they must evade the authorities who fear that the poets truthful words will spark rebellion.

Hayek, who is of Lebanese descent, spent almost ten years working to bring the popular inspirational fiction to life. The author Gibran (1883–1931), a Lebanese-American writer who was also an accomplished painter, was born in the town of Bsharri in modern-day Lebanon. As a young man he emigrated with his mother and siblings to the United States (Boston) where he began studying art and launched his literary career. The Prophet was published in 1923, been translated into 40 languages, and has never gone out of print.

Gibran instructed that on his death the royalties and copyrights to his materials be owned by his hometown in Lebanon, where the Gibran Museum is now located.

If you or your family are not already familiar with the poems in The Prophet, which have turned Gibran into the third best selling poet in the world, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu, this animated film would be a wonderful way to introduced them.
