High School Implements Later Start Times, Sees Dramatic Improvements

Sleeping Girl - CC d_t_vos

Schools all over Massachusetts are boosting student health and performance with a policy that gives youth an extra hour of sleep.

Most Boston schools have a start time of 7:35 a.m., and with the hour of travel time students often need to set aside in the mornings, teens only get an average of 6 hours of sleep. Although many studies have already been published about the health and academic benefits of well-rested youth, few schools have morning bells after 8:00 a.m.

“Some kids are exposed to the same degree of sleep loss for four or five years,” Judith Owens, director of the Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders at Boston Children’s Hospital told the Boston Globe. “It’s not a good thing. . . . If you are asking teenagers to get up at 5:30 or 6, that is their lowest point of alertness in their 24-hour cycle. It’s at that point where their brain is most loudly saying ‘stay asleep.’”

The Globe investigated several high schools experimenting with pushing their morning start time back to 8:30 a.m., letting their students sleep an extra hour every night.

The switch produced positive results almost immediately: test scores went up, the number of Ds and Fs dropped by half, rates of tardiness and absence went down, and teen related car crashes decreased dramatically.

Students said they did not mind being kept in school until 3:00 p.m. because the later start time made them feel better rested and less likely to fall asleep while in class.

New legislation for a delayed morning bell is currently being discussed by the school boards with possible implementation as early as 2017.

105-Year-old Fan Tosses First Pitch, Says Daily Dr. Pepper Keeps Her Feisty (WATCH)

Love of baseball was an easy transition for this mathematics teacher because baseball is all about the numbers–and with #105 on her jersey for the total years this spit-fire has been laughing with gusto.

Major League Baseball threw her a Texas party on Wednesday, allowing Elizabeth Sullivan to throw out the first pitch at the Rangers game.

She practiced in her yard throwing over-handed, saying that when she was in school they only allowed girls to pitch under-handed.

She says she‘s watched every Texas Ranger game for the last fifteen years. When she was informed she would be throwing out the first pitch, she hooted and hollered–but she wasn’t nervous.

How Fulfilling Are The Relationships In Your Life?

SeaGroveSunset-couple-bench-cc-Mojo-800px

Maintaining happy, healthy relationships in your life, whether they’re family, romantic or friendly, has a significant impact on your overall happiness and ability to thrive. Solid, meaningful relationships are important in your adult life. All good relationships require mutual respect and understanding but sometimes we have to hit the pause button to evaluate the people closest to us and determine if these people are nurturing and positive or if they’re only bringing us down. If you’re questioning the relationships in your life and wondering if you’re attracting the right kind of people, we’ve got a few tips to steer you in the right direction.

How to Attract the Right Kind of People to Your Life:

Before you set out to find a new romance or friendship, know what you’re looking for in a person. Think about the kind of person you want to bring into your life. Take stock of your own principles and values and evaluate others based on this list and make sure there is significant overlap.

Be true to yourself. Do you let people know the real and authentic you? If you’re projecting someone you’re not, you may be attracting the wrong people.

LOOKWoman Tracks Down Sperm Donor, Falls In Love With Him, And Marries Him

Know where to look for the kind of people you want to have in your life. Good people are out there and you can play a part in finding them. Studies show that spending time with people that are like-minded and have the same goals as you puts you in the right environment to meet the right people. Think about your hobbies and your interests and join groups and clubs that match up.

Be open to new people and situations but trust your instincts. You never know where a new relationship might be found whether it’s a new business connection, a potential romance or a new friendship. When you open yourself up to new opportunities you give the right people the chance to meet you, but trust your instincts and verify that new people entering your life actually share your values.

Get in touch with good people you already know. Have you lost touch with people you really like—a cousin,  old classmate, friend from college or previous co-worker? Now is the time to make a list of those people who you’d like to reconnect with and reach out to them. Not sure how to find them? Use a source like BeenVerified to help locate them.

It may sound cliché, but be the person you’d like to have in your life. Be friendly, generous and kind. You’ll be surprised what comes back to you.

Tips for Eliminating People From Your Life:

Recognize the signs of a bad relationship. Look at how this person fits into your life. Do they drain your energy, criticize you, play a victim, have a negative mindset, exhibit dishonestly or lack of compassion? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it might be time to reassess your relationship. Is there true value?

COOLThey Wanted Her to Undergo Cancer Treatment, But 90-Year-old Hits The Road Instead

Set your own boundaries and don’t be apologetic. For your own health and sanity, it’s okay to say no or tell someone they’ve pushed you too far or asked for too much.

If you know it is time to cut the cord—be bold, direct and firm. Unless you want them to hang around and play the victim, don’t fall into the trap.

RELATEDShe Got Lesson in Patience From Young Target Employee Named Ishmael

If you’ve decided you can no longer sustain the relationship or you find out information that makes you need to discontinue the relationship, it’s fine to say “I can’t see you anymore.” As humans we need relationships but we do not need every relationship. Be strong and remember you’re doing this for your own good.

This Firefighter has Taught Thousands of Poor Pakistanis How to Read (MUST-SEE)

Firefighter Teaches Pakistanis to Read Screenshot Al Jazeera

Not content with only saving people from burning buildings, this Pakistani firefighter has also spent decades saving children from illiteracy–and entrenched poverty–by teaching thousands to read, write, and do math.

Every workday for 30 years, Mohammed Ayub has left his job at an Islamabad fire department and set up a makeshift classroom in a city park.

And every day, hundreds of kids wait for “Master Ayub” to arrive on his bicycle so they can learn.

CHECK OUT:  Teen Takes Paralyzed Dad To College, Cares For Him While He Studies

It started when he first moved to the area and was looking for a hobby. He noticed a little boy washing cars and asked him why he wasn’t in school. When the boy explained his parents couldn’t afford to send him, and he needed to help earn money for the family, Ayub found his calling.

He began teaching the boy, who brought along a friend the next day. By the end of that first week, Ayub was teaching 50 kids in the park.

Over the years, former students have become teachers at the informal, outdoor school.

Thousands of Christian and Muslim kids from the surrounding slums – who had bleak futures before Ayub’s school – have gone on to higher education, vocational training, or landed decent jobs because of it.

“If we want Pakistan to prosper,” Ayub told Al Jazeera, “teach one word to a child every day. Your sisters, your brothers, wherever the illiterate are, help them.

Ayub is nearing retirement from the fire department and planning to make the school his full time job. He wants to build a real school building stocked with computers and books.

And just like the little boy who rounded up 50 more kids in that first week, the students today are rounding up bricks and stones — piling them beside the park each day before class, to use for Master Ayub’s new school.

It could really be big.

In Historic U.S. Ruling, Sikh Army Officer Can Keep Beard, Turban

Sikh soldier-released

The U.S. military has granted a Sikh-American officer a religious exemption allowing him to continue serving his country while maintaining his articles of faith. The landmark decision makes Captain Simratpal Singh, a decorated combat veteran, the first active duty Sikh soldier to receive approval to wear a beard and turban while actively serving in the U.S. Army.

“Captain Singh again proves to our military that the religiously mandated turban and beard do not hinder the ability to successfully serve,” said Sikh Coalition Legal Director, Harsimran Kaur. “This decision gives hope that our nation’s largest employer is making progress towards ending a policy of religious discrimination.”

MORE: Christians Protect Mosques on Fri., Muslims Guard Churches on Sunday

Captain Singh graduated from West Point with honors in 2010, but was then forced to make the untenable choice between his religion and his career. Following failed attempts to obtain an accommodation, he cut his hair and shaved his beard. After successfully completing Army Ranger School, a Bronze Star tour in Afghanistan, and receiving numerous other military accolades in various military positions, Captain Singh filed a religious accommodation request on October 21, 2015.

Last Thursday’s legal victory means Captain Singh has finally realized his dream of becoming spiritually whole.

“My military service continues to fulfill a lifelong dream,” said Captain Singh. “My faith, like many of the soldiers I work with, is an integral part of who I am. I am thankful that I no longer have to make the choice between faith and service to our nation.”

Captain Singh will continue in his battalion operations staff position at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia.

“With this historic accommodation, we hope that the U.S. military will finally move past protracted, case-by-case religious accommodations and recognize that the time for permanent policy change is now,” said a spokesperson for McDermott Will & Emery, which, along with the Sikh Coalition, and Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, filed the lawsuit.

“Shower To The People” – Box Truck Delivers Hot Showers to City’s Homeless (WATCH)

Shower Truck FB Shower to the People

How much does it cost to make homeless people “feel like a million bucks?”

Just $5,000 and a lot of hard work by one Missouri pastor.

Jake Austin bought a used box truck to convert it into a mobile showers for the homeless.

“Clean people are happier, healthier, and more hopeful,” Austin says. “When you step out of the shower, you feel like a million bucks.”

RELATED:  Cool Tiny House Village Opens With Electricity to Care for Seattle Homeless

Austin has worked with the homeless almost his entire life — his parents ran a soup kitchen when he was growing up. But the importance of showers for the homeless was made clear to him just a little over a year ago.

Handing out hygiene supplies to the homeless, a man thanked him for a bar of soap, then asked him where he could use it. Austin realized even with food and clean clothes, a person who hadn’t bathed in months would never land a job.

He created “Shower to the People,” a non-profit to provide hot showers to people living on the streets of St. Louis. The group’s logo hearkens back to the 60s, but with a twist— a fist is thrust into the air, clutching a bar of soap.

Austin found a used truck and began outfitting its interior with shower stalls, sinks, and privacy curtains for dressing. An additional row of sinks outside will let more people wash their faces and brush their teeth.

A local pipefitters union installed the truck’s plumbing, a linen service has volunteered to launder towels, and an RV center donated finishing work.

When it rolls out later this year, it will connect to fire hydrants across the city and use a generator to run an electric water heater for hot showers.

CHECK OUT:  Homeless Man Hands Out Resumes Instead of Asking for Cash-and Lands Job

Austin plans to send the truck to different locations around St. Louis each day. He figures parking it in one spot for eight hours would let 60 people shower every day.

There are not many non-profits providing showers to the homeless, Lava Mae in San Francisco, California is retrofitting old city buses for the job and a Florida man has built a mobile shower unit in a trailer for the homeless.

“If we can get people regularly clean, we can give them some hope,” Austin told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Get some hope in their bones, they can take the next steps. They can keep climbing.”

Man Who Shot Up Mosque Goes Back For Forgiveness, Finds Hugs Waiting

Mosque Shooter Apologizes screenshot WVIT

When a man shot up their mosque, the Connecticut congregation welcomed him with open arms after he felt remorse and returned, armed with an apology instead.

Ted Hakey, Jr. had been drinking heavily after November’s Paris attacks, stewing over the terrorists who identify as Muslims. In haste, he took his gun and opened fire on the empty mosque next door to his house.

No one was in the Baitul Aman building at the time, but Hakey was arrested and faces serious charges.

He says he was going through “a tough time” and that his violent reaction went against everything he believed in. He apologized to the U.S. Marine Corps in which he’d served years earlier, and wanted to apologize to his Muslim neighbors in person.

When he returned to the mosque (its name means “House of Peace”) to ask for forgiveness, he was surprised by members’ reaction.

The congregation almost immediately forgave Hakey — then invited him to their services.

Their reaction profoundly affected Hakey, who has pleaded guilty to a hate crime and is awaiting sentencing.

Standing before the congregation Saturday he told them God had to be proud that they weren’t afraid to continue worshiping after the shooting.

Mosque President, Mohammed Qureshi said Hakey’s apology brought tears to the eyes of mosque members. He said Hakey fired on the mosque because he didn’t understand its message and motto, which is “Love for all, hatred for none.”

Scientists Discover ‘Reverse Photosynthesis’ — Amazing News for the Environment

Photosynthesis sun and leaf CC jkrebs

A new discovery promises to harness sunlight and air to turn plants into fuel — hundreds of times faster than current methods.

You probably learned in school how photosynthesis uses the sun to help plants grow by turning sunlight into chemical energy. Scientists have now discovered what they’re calling “reverse photosynthesis” which uses the same process to break down plant material and create useful chemicals from plants.

CHECK OUT: Teen Invents Rain, Fire-proof Sleeping Bag for Homeless, and Offers Jobs

Researchers believe bacteria and fungi use reverse photosynthesis to effectively suck the nutrients out of dead plants, and they think it can be use to turn the gases from rotting plants into a liquid fuel — methanol.

In the process they discovered, sunlight and chlorophyl – which combine to create photosynthesis – when combined with a specific enzyme has the potential break the bonds of hydrogen and carbon in plant cells.

“This is a game changer, one that could transform the industrial production of fuels and chemicals, thus serving to reduce pollution significantly,” University of Copenhagen Professor Claus Felby and lead researcher said.

WATCH: Colorado Doctor Discovered Natural Way To Treat Common Vertigo

Biofuel makers currently use slow and expensive chemical processes to create their products, but reverse photosynthesis could drastically change the way they work. Replacing much of the energy involved with simple sunlight could save enormous amounts of energy currently required to get the same results.

Scientists at the University of Copenhagen’s Plant Science Center say their discovery will allow the manufacture of clean biofuels “faster, at lower temperatures and with enhanced energy-efficiency.”

“Some of the reactions, which currently take 24 hours, can be achieved in just 10 minutes by using the Sun.” David Cannella, a fellow researcher and discoverer, said.

Laundromat Owner Washes Thousands of Pounds of Laundry for Homeless for Free

Samuel Van De Cruze-Laundromat-cleaning for homeless

A laundromat owner spent every night for a week washing 1,000 pounds of homeless people’s laundry. His generosity saved 75 families roughly $5,000.

As a former social worker, Samuel Van De Cruze already knew about many of the challenges the homeless face. He also realized his new business could offer immediate help for a mundane chore that took time and money away from those who didn’t have much of either.

After Van De Cruze opened Mr. Bubbles Laundromat in Queens, New York recently, he saw for himself how homeless families struggled just to pay for their laundry needs.

“Clean clothes and bedding are necessities – almost as important as food and shelter,” Van De Cruze said. “People need clean clothes to function and to be healthy.”

As an Easter gift to the community, he decided to pick up the laundry from the shelter, each evening that week, and wash, dry, and fold it overnight, returning it by seven o’clock each of the following mornings.

Van De Cruz figures he saved the families money, and gave them clean clothes—and the free time to help them find a job, go to classes, or look for a permanent home.

A woman staying at the local shelter identified only as Catina B., says Van De Cruze’s gift saved her family the $30 she spends in a week on laundry.

In the temple he would learn to read and write. She gave him a few bahts for the train ride.

From novice to monk, learning transformed him. No longer illiterate, he allowed himself once again to dream of a family. He made a choice, he disrobed. Determined to work for a foreign company, he took menial jobs while he studied English.

Through serendipity, he met a French Jesuit missionary in the slums of Bangkok. There, at the Angel Center, he discovered his purpose, to help others. With the assistance of the Jesuits, he attended Xavier University in the Philippines. Ironing his classmates’ shirts between classes paid for his food and books while he obtained his social work diploma.

Life took shape. Working for the Christian Children’s Fund allowed him to provide for his family and dedicate himself to helping others. That was, until he reached the age of 60.
American practices confused him. One year, they recognized his work by awarding him an honorary PhD in social works and the next year, they forced him to retire.

Inactivity did not sit well with Dr. Amporn. He did not need to read the Bangkok Post analysis to understand that thousands of poor children were about to face even greater suffering. He made a choice. He took the savings from his pension fund and took a gamble. He recruited former colleagues, accountants, managers and others who had lost their jobs due to the economic crisis.

On Valentine’s Day, 1998, Dr. Amporn established the Foundation for Rehabilitation and Development of Children and Family (FORDEC). The date was no coincidence. He was entrusting FORDEC with his vision to give love to the loveless. More than a decade later, in the FORDEC schoolyard, two hundred children between the ages of 5 and thirteen, sit cross legged, eyes closed, as a monk leads them in meditation. These children will go home to shacks built on mounds of garbage with tin roof tops. Yet, for 6 hours, 6 days a week, they laugh, eat a hot meal, and learn to read and write. This is their school; they will tell you with pride. Dr. Amporn has changed the course of their lives, along with that of thousands of other destitute children. That is why they call him the foster father of 50,000.

Dr. Amporn Wathavongs life is chronicled in the new book The Boy with a Bamboo Heart: The Story of a Street Orphan Who Built a Children’s Charity by Chantal Jauvin. Contact the Foundation at 2232 WINDLASS WAY,  SAN LEANDRO, CA  94577
