Couple Buys 300 Acres and Restores it as India’s First Private Rainforest Sanctuary

When they saw how pollution was destroying India’s fresh water supply and forests were stripped bare by unrestrained agriculture practices, this couple sold their home in America to rebuild a rainforest — and create the first private wildlife sanctuary on the subcontinent.

Pamela and Anil K Malhotra sold their home in Hawaii and started buying land in 1986. They purchased a 55-acre coffee farm and began planting native trees and plants.

Much of the land in the area had been over-farmed, stripped of nutrients, and could no longer grow crops.

The Malhotras snatched up other smaller farm plots with the same problem and found the owners were happy to take money in exchange for the spent acreage.

Over the years, they assembled and planted 300 acres—and as vegetation returned, so did the animals.

Their “Save Animals Initiative Sanctuary” in the Western Ghats mountain range, which parallels India’s west coast near the country’s southern tip, is not the only brilliant example of private citizens restoring acres of rainforest.

A man in Columbia took miles of desolate savannah without a tree or bird in sight and created a native rainforest in soil so acidic and inhospitable it was considered impossible by experts. Paolo Lugari’s called his 8,000 Hectares (30 square mile) project Las Gaviotas, “The Seagull” because the idea was inspired when he saw a lone seagull far inland from a distant sea and dreamed of what could be.

Teen Takes Paralyzed Dad To College, Cares For Him While He Studies

A polio infection left Zhao Delong unable to walk as a child, and his father became a full-time caretaker for the little boy.

Years of treatment got Zhao back on his feet, but as his own condition improved, his father’s declined. Contracting an unidentified illness, the elder man himself was left paralyzed.

When it came time for Zhao to go off to college, he just couldn’t leave his father behind in the care of others. Instead, he moved his dad into the dormitory room at the university at Luoyang, so he could be a caregiver for his paralyzed parent.

His father became his college roommate — with Zhao cooking his meals, helping with physical therapy, and even shaving his face, between classes.

To bring in some cash for the two of them, Zhao has also dedicated hours for a part-time job.

J.K. Rowling, the famous author and charmer (pun totally intended) who wrote, not only the Harry Potter series but, a novel published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, took a break from her schedule to surprise the Orkney Library book club.

The club was discussing the mystery novel, Cukoo’s Calling, in Scotland on Saturday, and Rowling couldn’t help but reply to the club’s Twitter post when it mentioned the novel’s author, @RGalbraith.

A playful back and forth ensued and Rowling entertained the club’s invitation by asking which methods of travel were appropriate.

An Open Letter to the Whole Foods Shoppers Who Consoled Me As I Learned of Dad’s Suicide

Suicide comes at a high cost for everyone involved –but sometimes the effects of tragedy serve to bring people together, instead.

When Deborah Greene learned of her father’s suicide while grocery shopping in a Whole Foods store one year ago, the only thing keeping her world together was the kindness of strangers.

In an open letter addressed to the women who took care of Deborah in her time of greatest need, she thanked them for their compassion and bravery in the face of such upsetting circumstances.

The letter reads as follows:

Dear Strangers,

I remember you. Ten months ago, when my cellphone rang with news of my father’s suicide, you were walking into Whole Foods prepared to do your grocery shopping, just as I had been only minutes before you.

But I had already abandoned my cart full of groceries and I stood in the entryway of the store. My brother was on the other end of the line. He was telling me my father was dead, that he had taken his own life early that morning and through his own sobs, I remember my brother kept saying, “I’m sorry, Deborah, I’m so sorry.” I can’t imagine how it must have felt for him to make that call.

After I hung up, I started to cry and scream as my whole body trembled. This just couldn’t be true. It couldn’t be happening. Only moments before, I had been going about my errands on a normal Monday morning. Only moments before, my life had felt intact. Overwhelmed with emotions, I fell to the floor, my knees buckling under the weight of what I had just learned. And you, kind strangers, you were there.

You could have kept on walking, ignoring my cries, but you didn’t. You could have simply stopped and stared at my primal display of pain, but you didn’t. No, instead you surrounded me as I yelled through my sobs, “My father killed himself. He killed himself. He’s dead.” And the question that has plagued me since that moment came to my lips in a scream, “Why?” I must have asked it over and over and over again.

I remember in that haze of emotions, one of you asked for my phone and who you should call. What was my password? You needed my husband’s name as you searched through my contacts. I remember that I could hear your words as you tried to reach my husband for me, leaving an urgent message for him to call me. I recall hearing you discuss among yourselves who would drive me home in my car and who would follow that person to bring them back to the store. You didn’t even know one another, but it didn’t seem to matter. You encountered me, a stranger, in the worst moment of my life and you coalesced around me with common purpose, to help.

I remember one of you asking if you could pray for me and for my father. I must have said yes, and I recall now that Christian prayer being offered up to Jesus for my Jewish father and me, and it still both brings tears to my eyes and makes me smile. In my fog, I told you that I had a friend, Pam, who worked at Whole Foods and one of you went in search of her and, thankfully, she was there that morning and you brought her to me. I remember the relief I felt at seeing her face, familiar and warm. She took me to the back, comforting and caring for me so lovingly until my husband could get to me. And I even recall as I sat with her, one of you sent back a gift card to Whole Foods; though you didn’t know me, you wanted to offer a little something to let me know that you would be thinking of me and holding me and my family in your thoughts and prayers. That gift card helped to feed my family, when the idea of cooking was so far beyond my emotional reach.

I never saw you after that. But I know this to be true, if it were not for all of you, I might have simply gotten in the car and tried to drive myself home. But I thank God every day that I didn’t have to find out. Your kindness, your compassion, your willingness to help a stranger in need have stayed with me until this day. And no matter how many times my mind takes me back to that horrible life-altering moment, it is not all darkness. Because you reached out to help, you offered a ray of light in the bleakest moment I’ve ever endured. You may not remember it. You may not remember me. But I will never, ever forget you. And though you may never know it, I give thanks for your presence and humanity, each and every day.”

Deborah’s letter has been shared on websites worldwide since its publication last month. She talked with Good News Network about its impact…

“I have officially been rendered speechless at the response that my letter has received,” Deborah said in an email. ”I am so moved and honored that so many have taken the time to share in my story. In truth, I believe it was written by those very special women who stood with me on that very dark day, I have only given it words. I hope that as it circulates, now internationally, that it reaches them. And I hope that it inspires others to reach out to those in need, to act with kindness & compassion, and to recognize and begin a dialogue about the very human face and cost of suicide. If I achieve that, then I have made meaning of my father’s death.”

In January, the brilliant Beatles producer George Martin turned 90 years old, but it would be his last celebration. The English record producer, composer, audio engineer, and musician, who was known as “the Fifth Beatle” for his extensive influence on the sound of the Beatles records, died peacefully at home Tuesday.

He is considered one of the greatest record producers of all time, with 53 number-one hit singles in the UK and US.

Ringo Starr created a beautiful 3-minute tribute reel (see below) with many of the artists and producers talking about Sir George, who was able to remain humble and self-deprecating even after being knighted by the Queen.

When Sir George Martin first heard The Beatles on a recording in 1962, he called the band “unpromising” and he thought their early original songs were simply not good enough. But he signed them to a contract after meeting their enthusiastic manager, Brian Epstein, and meeting the boys, who joked about his tie and were so convivial that Martin wanted to sign them on their wit, alone.

Their first #1 hit, the Lennon song “Please Please Me,” was significantly altered by Martin’s suggestion that they speed up what was initially a slow ballad, according to a Beatles biography. One of Paul McCartney’s favorite memories of Martin was the brilliant suggestion to add a string quartet to his acoustic song, Yesterday—a tune hit that went on to become the most recorded pop song in history, with versions by Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye and thousands more.

“I have so many wonderful memories of this great man that will be with me forever,” wrote Paul on Facebook. “He was a true gentleman and like a second father to me. He guided the career of The Beatles with such skill and good humour that he became a true friend to me and my family. If anyone earned the title of the fifth Beatle it was George. From the day that he gave The Beatles our first recording contract, to the last time I saw him, he was the most generous, intelligent and musical person I’ve ever had the pleasure to know.”

‘Bad Dog’ Destined to Spend Life in Shelter Catches 150 Poachers in Two Years

This so-called “bad dog” is doing good in Africa, saving wildlife from poachers and putting illegal hunters behind bars.

Ruger, a Labrador retriever and German shepherd mix, was unloved as a puppy, angry and aggressive in later years, and is going blind today. But as Zambia’s first anti-poaching canine, he’s become a very good dog — catching more than 150 poachers since going to work in 2014.

Conservation biologist Megan Parker found Ruger in a Montana shelter. He’d snap at people and was hard to handle — qualities that make him unlikely to ever be adopted, but perfect for going after poachers.

Trained by Parker and others at Working Dogs for Conservation (WD4C), Ruger will signal when he’s spotted weapons or ivory by staring at the place the contraband is hidden.

Even though he’s going blind and can only see shadows, Ruger’s handlers say it’s only made him better at his job — by heightening his sense of smell.

During a recent demonstration in Zambia, he found a tiny piece of ivory hidden in a matchbox in less than three minutes. Some of the spectators thought his prowess was a form of witchcraft.

He’s also a model for more dogs being trained to fight poaching around the African continent.

The former “bad dog” has taken a bite out of Zambia’s poaching problems and the people who trained and work with Ruger think that he is more than just a “good dog” now.

“He’s a hero,” Pete Coppolillo of WD4C told The Guardian.

Puppy Saves Life of Sleeping Boy Unaware of Diabetes Threat

The force is strong between Luke and his Labrador Jedi —strong enough to have saved the boy’s life last week.

When the seven-year-old’s blood sugar level dropped alarmingly low during his sleep, his diabetes-sniffing dog leapt into action, and into Luke’s parents’ bed, to alert them of the danger.

When Luke’s mother, Dorrie Nuttall, had put him to bed March 3, she’d gotten a safe 100 mg/dL reading on his glucose level. But when she checked again after Jedi’s warning, it had dropped to the life-threatening level of 57— thirteen points below the lowest acceptable level for someone with diabetes.

Even a high-tech sensor implanted below Luke’s skin, which allows for continuous glucose monitoring, didn’t set off any alarms. It is only thanks to Jedi’s more reliable nose that the boy was able to be given a glucose tab to quickly boost his blood sugar.

In the video below, you can see Luke ask Jedi if his level is high or low, and the dog bows to signal “low.”

Jedi joined the family as a puppy, just after Luke was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The Labrador began training as a diabetes alert dog — using his nose to hit on warning signs of crashing or skyrocketing glucose levels.

The boy and his dog are inseparable, with Jedi staying close to Luke wherever he goes.

“Jedi’s job goes beyond alerting, he also saves Luke from being scared; he is his constant companion,” Dorrie wrote on Facebook.

Virginia Passes Medical Marijuana Bill to Allow for Production of Oils

Virginia lawmakers unanimously passed a bill that will allow families to be able to legally buy medical marijuana for treating epileptic seizures in the state in 2017.

Lengthy discussion and negotiation paved the way for passage of the bill, SB701, which allows the processing and manufacturing of Cannabidiol oil and THC-A—marijuana oils that are both low in THC, the compound that provides the high in cannabis.

“Providing this medication to Virginians is absolutely the right thing to do,” said Senator Dave Marsden, the sponsor of the legislation.“THCa and CBD oils have shown the ability to help alleviate the number and severity of seizures from intractable epilepsy and help so many families live a quality life.”

The state last year legalized possession of the two marijuana oils for intractable epilepsy patients and their caregivers, but failed to provide any way for patients to obtain the oils without breaking federal and state laws. This legislation provides the solution by requiring the Board of Pharmacy to create regulations to safely and securely provide the oils. Once the Board of Pharmacy creates the regulations they will be brought back before the legislature next year for final approval. Processing and distribution of the oils would not begin until sometime in 2017.

“This is a huge step for Virginia, a first in the nation concept that will provide the medications in the safest most secure fashion and shows once again that Virginia leads the way,” exclaimed Sen. Marsden.

Virginia is one of 40 states with medical marijuana laws and, according to the latest report on Medical Cannabis Access in the U.S. by the group, Americans for Safe Access, is one of the seventeen states that limits use to CBD and THCa oils for certain conditions.

Activists and legislators from across the country will be discussing these types of laws and other medical cannabis topics at ASA’s 4th Annual Medical Cannabis Unity Conference in Washington, DC later this month.

“We are grateful to the Virginia General Assembly for allowing this first step towards helping epilepsy patients and their families to obtain a safe and reliable treatment in the Commonwealth without breaking laws,” said Beth Collins, ASA director of communications and outreach.

The bill now goes to the Governor’s desk, where he is expected to sign the legislation.

She Can’t Decide Which Dogs to Save, So Buys the Entire Horrid Shelter Overseas

When a woman couldn’t decide which dogs to rescue from a rundown shelter, she bought the whole place — and intends to save all 250 of them.

Danielle Eden and her husband regularly visit animal shelters, choosing dogs that are living in the worst conditions to bring home to their 50-acre Dog Tales sanctuary in King, Ontario. There, they get long walks, training, and medical care before being placed in new homes.

She usually selects 10 to 20 dogs in greatest need, but when Danielle saw the pups packed into an Israeli shelter, she realized they were all in deep trouble. Some had been there for years, fighting over scraps of bread and living with rats.

The couple bought the entire shelter on the spot — and Danielle went to work rescuing the dogs.

Since the first of the year, she was able to place 90 of them in homes or other shelters in Israel. She brought 25 of the healthiest dogs back to Dog Tales in Canada.

Within a week of arriving at the sanctuary, the dogs had gone through an amazing transformation. They began coming out of their shells, learning to trust people again.

Fed healthy diets, they were no longer fighting each other for scraps, but people were practically fighting each other to adopt them. More than half found new homes within three weeks.

Dog Tales plans to bring the remaining 150 dogs to Canada when they are healthy enough.

22-year-old Whitney Develle began offering the inspiring deal by posting a photo online of a tattoo she’d inked atop her friend’s scars. She said she wanted to help more people to feel comfortable with their bodies.

The flood of requests through Facebook and Instagram was so overwhelming that Whitney had to revise her original offer saying she could only do 50 free sittings 1 or 2 days a week at Garage Ink until the end of the year, though she will still offer heavily discounted rates for the other days of the week.

Many of her followers who wanting their scars covered were too ashamed to go to any other artist because of the stigma behind self-harm – but Whitney is looking to change that stigma one tattoo at a time.

“These are grandparents, mothers and fathers, young adults who have moved beyond their days of self-inflicted harm,” the artist told 9News. “I want them to know that they no longer have to feel ashamed and that they no longer have to conceal their scars. They can receive some closure and find confidence again.”

Disabled Dog Was Never Chosen For Adoption Until He Met Girl With Same Birth Defect

A dog born with a rare birth defect had waited a long time for an adoption that never came. It turns out the wait was worth it—he was the perfect match for a little girl born with the same condition.

An animal shelter in San Francisco had rescued the eight-year-old tan Chihuahua, but no one wanted to adopt him. He was born with a condition that prevents bones in the hands or feet from fully developing.

After finding no homes, shelter workers thought maybe he would be a perfect match for a human family dealing with the same birth defect, so they began searching among support groups for people with Ectrodactyly.

They finally found seven-month-old Grace, who lives in Indiana—the perfect match.

A volunteer at the Umbrella of Hope shelter traveled with the little dog halfway across the U.S. to his new home yesterday.

“At the heart of this all, is love and dedication,” Umbrella of Hope wrote on its Facebook page. “The love and dedication of a special family, meeting the love and dedication of a special animal rescue group.”

This is not the first time we’ve seen special adoption matches for special needs pets and humans. In January, a toddler whose left arm was amputated from a rare form of cancer was paired with Holly the 3-legged kitten that survived a terrible arm injury, leaving her with just three paws. Truly these examples are both matches made in heaven.

For the last six years, Renee King-Sonnen worked with her husband Tommy on a 96-acre beef ranch without much thought to any ethical alternatives to their diet or livelihood – until recently.

Against the rancher’s warning to avoid becoming attached to the animals, Renee started to feel emotionally connected to the cows and chickens they farmed. She would sing to them, sit with them, even dance with them. And, yes, she named them.

Finally the day came when she could no longer bear to sell or eat meat from their farm in Angleton, Texas.

“This past Halloween, I found myself saying no to anything with meat in it. I’d been vegetarian in the past and even tried a raw diet for several months, but never had the compassion connection until I LIVED IT!” Renee wrote on her new Facebook page, called, Vegan Journal of a Rancher’s Wife. “I love these animals – I see their souls, and they see mine.”

Renee kept a diary there of the goings-on of her transition to a vegan lifestyle. After accruing thousands of social media followers, Renee hatched a plot to raise money to begin a hostile, but loving, takeover of the farm. She collected $30,000 in donations to buy her husband’s cattle and animals out from under him.

With a little bit of consoling, Tommy not only whole-heartedly joined his wife’s vegan diet, but started working for her at the newly-dubbed farm, Rowdy Girl Animal Sanctuary.

Longest Flight with All-Female Crew Marks International Women’s Day for Air India

Today, on International Women’s Day, Air India rules the skies with a new world record for the longest flight with an all-female crew.

The airline posted photos with its announcement that a March 6 flight from New Delhi to San Francisco was “manned” with no men at all. From the beverage cart to the cockpit, women were in charge.

They flew that first flight “with pride and glory,” according to their Twitter page, but also planned to assign only women to 22 more flights on March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day.
