The Walt Disney Company has just announced that they will be launching a $100 million initiative to revolutionize children’s hospitals around the world so that they’re more comforting for kids.
As a means of better understanding the medical experience, Disney has adopted a “Team of Heroes” to research what aspects of hospitals scare young patients the most.
Though the entertainment company will be working with more hospitals over the course of the next five years, they are kicking off the project at the Texas Children’s Hospital.
Not only is the facility the largest children’s hospital in the country, but they also have a special relationship with Walt Disney himself.
Back when the hospital was first under constructed in 1952, Walt Disney commissioned a special painting of the building featuring some of his most famous branded characters in the foreground.
As a means of honoring their shared experience with the company, Mark A. Wallace, who is the president and CEO of the hospital, presented a copy of the painting to Disney’s CEO and Chairman Bob Iger during a press conference on Wednesday.
Iger said: “We chose Texas Children’s Hospital because they are global leaders in pediatric care as well as the largest children’s hospital in the country and their dedicated healers share our commitment to support the emotional well being of young patients and their families.
“We’re going to use our beloved characters and renown creativity to bring our timeless stories to life in innovative ways and hopefully transform a hospital stay into a warmer, more personalized environment for each patient.

America’s first permitted, 3D-printed home has just been created in Austin, Texas.
The stylish house was created by ICON, an innovative construction company, and New Story, a charity dedicated towards providing shelter for families in the developing world.
After the successful establishment of the home in Austin, the organizations are now working towards building a whole community of the 3D-printed homes in rural El Salvador or Haiti.
Each home costs roughly $4,000 to create, with a small amount of additional human labor. All the materials for the building are locally-sourced and made from mortar. Additionally, each home takes only about 12 to 24 hours to make.
ICON co-founder Jason Ballard said in a statement: “With 3D-printing, you not only have a continuous thermal envelope, high thermal mass, and near zero-waste, but you also have speed, a much broader design palette, next-level resiliency, and the possibility of a quantum leap in affordability. This isn’t 10 percent better, it’s 10 times better.”
Assuming the organizations are able to achieve their fundraising goal, families could move in as soon as the third quarter of 2019. Once they complete the community in El Salvador, ICON and New Story will “democratize the technology to other non-profits and governments to scale around the world.”

Kevin Barber may only be 16 years old, but that hasn’t stopped him from helping dozens of homeless people get back on their feet again.
Barber is the instigator behind the Wheels For Change six-month pilot program that was launched in his hometown of San Diego, California.
The program pays homeless residents $11.50 an hour to perform daytime labor shifts around the city, like picking up trash and erasing graffiti. Alpha Project, the organization that started the program, then helps to connect the workers with social workers, housing, and financial advisors.
Barber first heard about the Wheels For Change initiative from a TED talk video about the positive effects that the program had had in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The young activist was so inspired by the ingenuity of the program, he contacted city officials about hosting a Wheels For Change trial run. When they said they were on board, Kevin’s mom bankrolled the expenses for the pilot.
Now, upon seeing the success of Wheels For Change in San Diego, city officials are considering financing the program in the future.
In the mean time, however, Kevin is raising money to fund the program for the 150 homeless people who are currently on its wait list.
“The program is simple,” says Kevin. “Several days a week, a van will pick up homeless people who express an interest in working. The van will take them to work picking up trash, pulling weeds, clearing brush, etc. At the end of the day, workers will be driven back to Alpha Project, or to the City’s new tent structures for the homeless, and will be compensated for their work. Here they may also get shelter arranged.
“The goal is to get the homeless connected with social services they need, into housing, and offer them the dignity of working. It empowers people and gives them work. We believe this is a win-win for the city, the homeless, and our community.”

It’s been one year since a video of a street fight between Sheldon Ward and Jamar Mobley first went viral – but their fists weren’t the reason why the clip made headlines worldwide. It was because of the man who stepped in to stop the fight.
In a video that was recorded by a young onlooker, the two teens from Atlantic City, New Jersey can be seen brawling in the street. Their peers can be heard egging them on and encouraging them to fight.
Suddenly, Ibn Ali Miller marches up to the group, steps into the middle of the fight, and demands that the youths stop exchanging blows.
“You’re almost men, you’re not kids no more,” Miller exclaims to the fighters. “Start acting like it. You’re going to get nowhere like this.”
He then insisted that he wasn’t going to leave until the two teens shook hands – and they did.
When asked earlier this week about why they felt inclined to listen to the man, Sheldon and Jamar both said that it was because they had never had father figures to tell them not to fight.
“He said to us what a father should have said to us,” Jamar told CBS News.
Now one year after the fight broke out, Miller still meets with the youngsters once a week to offer up his wisdom and advice. Not only that, but Jamar and Sheldon say that he has become a role model for the rest of the youths in the community as well.
“Once they know that someone’s paying attention, once they know that someone loves them, once they know that people are gonna be there for them and hold them to account, you know, they’ll rise to the occasion,” Miller told CBS News.
Maybe the best part of the whole story? Jamar and Sheldon are also now best friends.
“I just hated this person, I just wanted to fight this person, and now we’re calling each other brothers,” Jamar added.

Conservations and wildlife experts are posting hilarious appraisals of animal species in the style of online shopping reviews.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Pleasantly surprised. Thought I had ordered a Roomba, but this did an excellent job of cleaning up my ecosystem. Only downside is the projectile vomiting. Overall 5 stars, would drunkenly purchase again. #rateaspeciespic.twitter.com/5fDfHiaWNq
The ongoing joke first kicked off when the Oregon Zoo tweeted a picture of an otter with the caption reading: “4/5 stars. Overall very good first impressions. Sturdy built, totally winter-ready and waterproof. Only comes in brown but that’s actually a plus for me. #RateASpecies.”
Since then, dozens of wildlife specialists, aquariums, and zoo pages have joined in on the fray with amusing #RateASpecies reviews of their own.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ CAT/SNAKE HYBRID Extremely musky. 5/6 ends sharp and pointy. Handles like a furry noodle. But fantastic for taking care of unwanted prairie dogs along your property.#rateaspeciespic.twitter.com/I7euo0S3GJ
The trend hasn’t been exclusive to wildlife specialists, either – other Twitter users wrote some pretty popular reviews as well.
⭐⭐⭐ NOT AS EXPECTED Color not as shown (not even CLOSE!!!), supposed to be predator but just sits on heated rock all day and let turtles walk all over him (if ambush predators are so different you should tell people) also missing one toe???#rateaspeciespic.twitter.com/5EAdkDN5D4
The #RateASpecies hashtag is quite similar to the #CuteOff competition that broke out amongst zoos on Twitter back in January 2017.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I WAS A DOUBTER I was skeptical but this really works! You can't just put any kind of kangaroo in a tree. You need to make sure you get the right kind. Look for labels like "Matschie's" or "Goodfellow's" to know it's the real deal. #rateaspeciespic.twitter.com/8fy8dU74fK

Parks and zoos across the nation had all been competing to see who had the cutest resident – and while the world’s smallest deer could have won the general election, the Seattle Aquarium rebuked them with a picture of their newborn otter.
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ A+ VINTAGE ROADSTER Despite few major design updates since the Ice Age, a worthy investment for current and future aficionados. Oxygen-processing and sustained land speed unparalleled. Extremely rare, though hopefully not for long.#rateaspeciespic.twitter.com/Dqa0Gp7Q7m

The Lesson: When we think of the word “addiction”, we tend to immediately think of the absolute worst forms of alcoholism and substance abuse. But according to Russell Brand – a celebrity who has overcome almost every form of addiction – everyone is addicted to something. In this fascinating interview, the media mogul himself talks about how we can overcome our own addictions and learn to love ourselves in a consumer-crazy culture.
Notable Excerpt: “All substance addiction is, is it distills perfectly the phenomenon of addiction. Because if you withdraw from heroin, you know what it is you need. But I think a lot of us suffer from the notion that there is something missing from our lives; that there is something that is not whole about us; that we are, in some way, inadequate, and we can address this through consuming. Now our culture relies on us feeling like this, mate … capitalism depends on the perennial stimulation of desire. But if you don’t need anything, then you’re not going to buy the Saint Laurents or the Nikes.”
The Speaker: Russell Brand is an outspoken author and hilarious comedian, actor, and radio host who often discusses how he utilized meditation to overcome the many addictions (see list below) which held him hostage in the early stages of his career. In addition to starring in dozens of films and media productions, he wrote “Recovery: Freedom From Our Addictions”, which is described as “a guide to all kinds of addiction from a star who has struggled with heroin, alcohol, sex, fame, food and eBay.”
The Host: Jay Shetty is an inspirational speaker, YouTube show host, and content creator who turned away from his pursuit of wealth and fame at the age of 22 so he could become a monk and wander across Europe and India. Now, as his career blossoms across social media, Shetty is considered to be one of the most widely-viewed international motivational speakers with millions of viewers seeking his wisdom on life, love, business, and health.

A district in India has just become the first of the country’s union territories to be 100% powered by solar energy.
Diu, which has a population of roughly 56,000 people, now holds a solar capacity of 13 MW; 3 MW of which are generated from rooftop units, while the other 10 MW are generated through regular facilities.
Before Diu started building its own electrical infrastructure, the district depended on a neighboring territory to provide for their energy needs. In addition to being more expensive, this tactic also resulted in huge line losses throughout Diu.
Milind Ingle, who is the executive engineer of the territory’s electricity departmen, told Times of India: “For water and electricity, the Union territory was solely dependent on the Gujarat government. To overcome this limitation, the administration of the Union territory decided to set up solar power plants in Diu.”
According to the Times of India, residents of Diu have seen a 12% reduction in their electrical fees since the district started generating their own power. In fact, Diu’s solar facilities are able to generate far more energy than the district even demands.
“Diu’s peak-time demand for electricity goes up to 7 MW and we generate about 10.5 MW of electricity from solar energy daily. This is way more than the consumption demand requirement.”
Plus, Diu can now serve as an example for the rest of the country’s sustainability goals.

North and South Korea have been clashing for the last seven decades, but this group of musicians is building peace one note at a time.
The Lindenbaum Festival Orchestra recently performed a concert on the border of North and South Korea in the Demilitarized Zone. The 100 musicians moved outside for the final song so people across the border could hear the music.
“The DMZ – the Demilitarized Zone – in the Korean peninsula is one place on Earth that desperately needs music,” said the orchestra founder Hyung Joon Won.
Joon Won founded the orchestra in 2009 to promote reconciliation. He dreams of organizing a performance with musicians and singers from both sides of the border.
“I believe in the power of music, which can definitely help and promote reconciliation and peace between two countries,” Joon Won told PeacePrints.
“Conflict happens, in my mind, in my opinion, when there’s no communication, for groups, or for people. For example, North and South Korea – we do not have communications at all,” he said, “but music, for example, when we are gathered through music, we learn instantly how to communicate.”
“I really wish North and South Korea will talk and meet through music, so the world will see the hope of our reconciliation and peace, and the value of music – to contribute to building bridges as to the division of our nation, conflict, and a lack of communication. Peace is harmony.“

It was just another day of work for Evoni Williams when a stranger snapped a photo of her that would change her life.
18-year-old Williams has been working at a Waffle House restaurant in La Marque, Texas since she graduated high school. She has been saving up all of her tips, earnings, and wages to pay for college.
Williams was working a chaotic morning shift when a partially disabled customer named Adrien Charpentier asked if Williams could cut up his ham.
The senior says that he has recently been experiencing muscle weakness in his hands, and though he can hold a fork perfectly, he can’t properly use a knife to cut up his food.
Despite the hectic work environment, Williams said that she was more than happy to oblige.
As she was cutting up the ham, another patron at the restaurant witnessed the sweet exchange, snapped a photo, and posted it to Facebook where it was shared thousands of times.
The photo garnered so much attention that it eventually caught the eye of La Marque Mayor Bobby Hocking.
“Somebody tagged me and it immediately, it just touched my heart,” Hocking told KTVI. “It’s so wonderful that the younger generation cares about the older generation.”
As a means of thanking the young lady for her kindness, Hocking declared that March 8th was Evoni “Nini” Williams Day. Not only that, but officials from Texas State University rewarded the humble Waffle House server with a $16,000 scholarship for the school.
Williams, who was brought to tears by the generosity of her city, says that she plans on studying business and management at TSU.

One stranger’s selfless act of unspeakable generosity has resulted in a ripple effect of good deeds that involved at least a dozen people – and saved half a dozen lives.
21-year-old Brendan Flaherty had been attached to a dialysis machine and waiting for a kidney transplant for six years.
When no suitable donors had been found, his friend Philip Cameli stepped up to volunteer his kidney, but, as fate dictated, he was not a match. Meanwhile, a 44-year-old woman named Kimberly Cooper just walked into the hospital one day to sign-up to volunteer to give away her kidney, and the computer matched her to young Brendan.
Cameli was so inspired by her eagerness to benefit a stranger that the teen decided to go ahead and donate his kidney, too. But it didn’t end there!
The woman who was a sudden match for his organ, Clotilde Ruiz, had a daughter who also was so moved that her mom was being saved by a stranger, that she decided to offer her kidney, too.
This same pattern of selfless donation continued until six different strangers offered their kidneys to patients at Chicago’s Northwestern Hospital who were in need of transplants. All had been negative matches for loved ones or friends, but were moved through compassion to help another.
On Wednesday, all the people involved in the rare 12-person kidney swap met each other in one room for the first time—and hugs, tears, and laughter filled the air.
Cooper the one who began it all, says she hopes the story will encourage more Americans to become living donors as 100,000 people are currently on the national kidney waiting list in the U.S.
She said she just wanted to be “A Good Samaritan for a day,” and six people will feel a lifetime of gratitude for that.

Mindfulness is the ability to pay attention to your current experience—both the internal and external—without judgment. Practicing mindfulness allows us to make wiser choices and pursue healthier and more beneficial avenues in life. Had I learned them earlier in life, I would have taught my kids the valuable life lessons that I’ve gleaned from over fifteen years of mindfulness study and practice. Here are 10 of those lessons, based on my new book, “Forty Things I Wish I’d Told My Kids”:
1. Don’t Be Ruled by the Tyranny of Events
Most of us allow our happiness to be ruled or dictated by the events that happen to us. When the stock market goes down, we do poorly on a test, or our taxes increase, we feel sad, sometimes for days afterwards – but it does not have to be that way. Our experience of life—and our happiness—results from events and from our response to those events. Our response can dramatically impact our mind state and our happiness regardless of the way life breaks for us.
2. 90% of Your Worries Are Wrong
Most of what we worry about never comes to pass—probably well over 90%. But we let our internal lives—and our happiness—be dictated by the anxiety that is created by imaginary events that will never come to pass (or if they do, they will not be anywhere near as bad for us as we imagine). This is unnecessary if we can be mindful and change our thought patterns.
3. Caring, Planning, and Worrying Are Three Different Things
Our culture believes that to care about someone, or to plan for the future, we have to worry. We have to think obsessively about the someone or something, even if it is beyond the point where thinking is productive.
But in fact, the opposite is true; we should care for our loved ones and should plan for the future, but obsessive thinking –which is well past the point of constructive caring or meaningful planning– saps our energy, wastes are time, and is actually counter-productive to true caring and meaningful planning.
4. Easy Isn’t What It’s Cracked Up to Be
We live in a comfort driven culture, where the goal is to live a life of ease in order to escape from the difficulties of life. In reality, such a life leads to suffering, not happiness, as we can never truly succeed in that kind of misguided plan. Rather, it is more fulfilling to lead a life marked by meaningful, challenging goals and a mindful effort to achieve them. Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone.
5. “You Make Me Mad” Is a Fantasy
We hear this all the time as if someone else is always to blame for our anger. In reality, our anger is our chosen reaction to events. so our reaction need not default to anger when things do not happen to our liking. In fact, anger very rarely is a wise response to undesirable events: it almost always leads to more unfortunate occurrences.
Many of us think of freedom as the ability to do what we want, unrestrained by external limitations – but is this really freedom? More likely, true freedom is liberation from our harmful habits, our unhealthy thought patterns, and our incessant inner critics. Choosing healthy behaviors fueled by a determination and discipline in building them into new habits is the path to true freedom.
7. Speaking Is Like Pouring Concrete
Concrete is easy to pour, but then very difficult to retract and reshape after it is poured. In the same way, our words are easy to shape and control before they are spoken; but after they are released, their impact is often impossible to retract. Mindfulness allows us to choose our words carefully before we create situations that are challenging to repair.
8. Use Your Mistakes to Your Advantage
In the United States, we are very fearful of making mistakes, which prevents us from pursuing new, ambitious aspirations. It is the wrong approach to life. We should view mistakes as inevitable parts of a learning process and embrace them as part of any worthy endeavor.
Our happiness is often measured by whether we succeed in achieving external goals. And while we should put forth our best effort to reach the goals we set for ourselves, we will be happier if we anchor our goals to truly important values—like honesty, integrity, compassion, aspiring to do our best, and inspiring others to do their best. Doing this will allow us to be happy regardless of whether or not we have achieved each and every external goal we set for ourselves.
10. Your Happiness Is in Your Hands
Your mind state is not determined by external events. You cannot run from them—in fact, if you do you will suffer more. But facing reality does not mean your happiness is dictated by the events that happen to you. The mind state that you bring to life’s challenges will determine your happiness far more than the nature of life’s events.
John Allcock is the co-founder and director of mindfulness at Sea Change Preparatory, a trailblazing academy that regularly integrates the practice of mindfulness into its curriculum. Single mother-of-two Monique Hall thought she was just being called to another ordinary pizza delivery – until a local church invited her to come up on their stage.
Pastor Wilfredo De Jesús of New Life Covenant Church in Chicago had spent the month of February encouraging congregants to honor strangers by performing random acts of kindness.
In order to be a leading example of his preachings, the pastor ordered a pizza delivery to the church’s address.
Hall, who works as a delivery driver for Domino’s, arrived at the church doors and became confused as to why she was being asked on stage.
The pastor then placed $100 into her hand as a tip for the delivery. Then, he asked ten more congregants to contribute to the tip as well.
People kept piling cash into Hall’s hand until she was eventually moved to tears. When she left the church, she was not only carrying a basket full of money, but she was also given a Bible and gift bag for the road ahead.
Becoming an ambassador for the moral of the story herself, Hall paid the kindness forward, sharing the tips with her fellow delivery drivers.
“I definitely wasn’t expecting it, but I knew that I had been struggling for a long time being a single parent…especially trying to make ends meet,” Hall told WGN. “So when they did that, I was overwhelmed and I was shocked. I felt so loved by them – all I could do was cry.”
There are few things better in the world than the smell of popcorn, cotton candy, and a glittering show, but one circus in Illinois creates a special level of elation – by adding delightful dogs.
A pair of pit bulls named Junebug and Rosie Ray are the stars of the Midnight Circus; an evening production in Chicago’s parks that features clowns, acrobats, aerialists, and rescue dogs.
The Midnight Circus performance is special not just because it raises money for city parks – it also helps to fight negative stereotypes about pit bulls.
The co-founder Jeff Jenkins met Junebug at an anti-dogfighting training event that he was teaching. Jenkins could tell that she was being mistreated, so he convinced the pup’s owner to let Jenkins adopt her.
Rosie Ray, a pit bull from an animal shelter, “was loud, wild, and showed all the signs of a puppy who had not been socialized, trained… She also had huge sweet eyes and that intangible quality that says ‘I’m your next family member.’”
Since Rosie and Junebug joined the circus, the show follows a pattern in which Junebug plays the rowdy actress who steals Jenkin’s hat and playfully runs around while Jenkins tries to catch her. Then, Rosie Ray breaks out and tears through the obstacle courses like a lightning bolt.
The playful pups are naturals at entertaining and serve as the circus’ finale. 100% of the ticket proceeds go to parks in the Windy City, which has raised almost $1,000,000.
The Midnight Circus has also visited correctional facilities where Rosie Ray and Junebug help to “build bridges” among the residents and encourage honest conversations about how to better take care of rescue dogs.
“Dogs are great healers for finding common ground because they’re unbelievably faithful and they love you unconditionally, which is a great lesson for us,” Jenkins told the Chicago Tribune.
